  • Dr. Rebecca Craik, dean of the College of Health Sciences at Arcadia University discusses a study recently published in JAMA (Sept 2019) in which she was co-PI, that looked at the effects of home-based physical therapy on elderly hip fracture patients. The study shows that more rigorous physical therapy than what is usually offered can help return the patient to their "before" lifestyle.

I fell in my driveway and fractured the femoral neck. I had a partial hip replacement. I was 1 month and 2 weeks from turning 80. (chronologically) Biologically younger with a younger activity level, having completed 2 very strenuous backpacking trips on a portion of the Pacific Crest Trail and also repairing, painting and skirting my home that had suffered long neglect. My excellent physical condition contributed to a very rapid progress post surgical for the first 7 weeks when I had excellent hands on therapy, first in a nursing facility and then at home for a month. I live alone. I can tell you I loved having the nurse, Pt and OT visits to brighten my days and also to hold me accountable, to give the emotional encouragement. About 2 1/2 weeks after discharge from home health I became depressed, didn't dress, stayed in my recliner and slept a lot, with little exercise. I snapped out of it and resumed exercises after 3 weeks. All my therapy had been while I had limitations imposed on movements and none for post limitations. I was on my own and looked to RUclips sites with physiotherapists but my Range of Motion and flexion did not improve sufficiently. My Surgeon prescribed more PT and I now go 2x a week and am making better progress. Though I was highly motivated, without guidance I was not doing the best exercises nor doing others most efficiently. I definitely support continued work under the guidance of a physiotherapist for better utilization of rehab exercises, for accountability and motivation and for the extra social contact for those who live alone.
