A35 cylinder heads are a very common problem. Main dealers often repair them under goodwill if the history is good. We’ve sent a few and they’ve been approved by Mercedes for free.
Will is like a consultant surgeon, same principle of putting things together and rebuilding back up, absolutely amazing listening to him. Wicked video Calv, good luck with it
Absolutely glued to this video. Very very informative the way Will explains things even Calvin understands 😂 probably one of the best videos on the channel imo. More please 😃
Calvin getting close to being put on torch holding duty. 'so its just a burnt valve' 'there'll be a reason it's burnt'. Great team work, enthusiasm and knowledge colliding.
I agree with a lot of what he says. However he’s overlooked something here. He commented the restriction in the exhaust port, was inline with the crack in the valve. Valves actually rotate whilst the engine is running. So that’s not the reason the valve cracked. It’s quite possible it cracked if cold water from the flood, entered that hot cylinder, and rapidly cooled that valve down. It’s also possible that cylinder has been running lean, for whatever reason. The first thing I would have done is put a DTI on all 4 pistons, to see if there has been any hydraulic issues, which may have shortened (bent) a rod. I realise he mentioned he was going to do that.
That's what I thought valves rotate also if water entered the cylinder the valves would look cleaner this looks to me like a bad injector or a bad tune.
A lot of A35 owners are very keen to see what could be done going forward .. Facebook and forums are loaded with the the cylinder head issue .. please keep us updated
I have my own theory, regular injector testing, especially if someone’s using standard UK fuel as well as swapping out the filter gauze on the thermostat that was there from build but not in the later revisions post 2022.
Will is a brilliant mechanic to know. What amazes me though is when you talk about a car that is essentially a modern vehicle and made by mercedes it still has common fault issues go wrong which are well known.
Great techy video.....amazed the exhaust valves are 10mm smaller than a Golf R......talk about restrictive.....seeing the diff clutch pack work too was eye opening with the slopes on the plate......wicked job.
Well Done Calvin, iv read so many Facebook, and forum pages about these issues that sort of scared me away from these cars, so I settled on same era cla220d, this video was so informative well done I love all your content its literal gold I especially like the technical vids like this with Will or with your Bodyshop projects 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Forget about having blood Will has engine oil in his system when this man bleeds bet it’s pure gold, good knowledge and good amount experience is needed with the cars and not to mention engineering
It’s an a250 engine pushed to the limits from factory and is the reason why I never tuned mine. The cylinder heads are known to crack even with low mileage and stock power. I don’t know 5% of what Will does but this screams to me it was tuned probably on someone’s driveway with a cheap pops and bangs map… Tuned to 99 Ron and run on cheap low octane fuel. Never buy one of these unless it’s unmodified and in warranty or you are asking for it
I ain’t even mechanically minded but that video was truly fascinating. As someone mentioned earlier I wish VRS were my local garage. Will is a walking talking encyclopaedia of car knowledge.

haha i was just looking at a A35 and a A45 yesterday and was supposed to be going back tomorrow for the A35😀 I reckon ill go with the A45 even though it has slightly higher millage and a year older
He says at 19:37 that he hasn’t seen a car with a burnt valve in ages. I work with engines and I genuinely see about one a week. But it is all the very small engined cars like the Peugeot 1.2 or qashqui 1.2. They run so hot to be so efficient that it happens a lot.
Think the burnt valve issue triggered a class action lawsuit in America. Rather like the E46 subframe issue. Over there BMW have to sort it. Here in the uk you’re on your own.

Interesting this, i had an A35 from the moment they came out and had it stage 1 tuned. In the 3 years of owning it with the tune i never had an issue. So its interesting to hear that there are so many common issues. Top video Calv!
Cracked heads, diffs, turbos with 70k on it. Not good enough out of Mercedes. I used to be a MB salesman and drove this exact model when it was first released. Shame because it was a really fun car to drive. Interestingly, myself and the master tech had a look at the engine specs and it was almost identical to the A250. The only spec difference we could see at a glance was the piston size and maybe turbo can’t quite remember. The valve size would make sense that this is a 250 turned up. Good luck!
Awesome and very informative video 👌👍👏 You're very lucky to have such friend like Will. I could listen to him all day long.
