It's a miracle many of us survive our youth. Inexperience, lack of judgement, inebriation, and pushing the envelope.
I mean some people are just old souls or have a more mature mindset (or are nerds) and don't get themselves into situations like this but there are also a lot of people who have some insane "I can't believe I survived that" stories of idiotic stuff they did in their teens/early 20s.
Credit to the authorities who found that body in 100ft of water.

This is sadly all too common. People are less worried about the person who was injured/who died and the effect of the event on their loved ones and more worried about covering their asses. Similar happened with Nancy Ng, who vanished in Guatemala, the group of people she'd been there with immediately left the country and didn't even tell anyone that something had happened to her. Empathy is sorely lacking in some people.
I worked in Destin, Florida for a couple of years and every spring break some unfortunate drowning involving young adults, boats and alcohol occurred. Water is like playing with fire, it needs to be respected. Please be careful.
I used to live on Pensacola Beach. Mostly Surfers and undertow drownings. We assumed the deaths in Destin were all caused by Bette Midler, thank you for clearing that up.
Some of these people come from backgrounds where they have never been held accountable and when they get out to the real world reality slaps them in the face.

If alcohol was absent from all this, the probability of a fatal accident taking place would certainly be much lower. This was a senseless and avoidable tragedy that killed a person and deeply impacted everyone’s lives. I wish people in this age group could understand that bad decisions done during this period of our lives have the potential to change our future and completely destroy the dreams we once nurtured. I think for many young adults there is a sense of invincibility and overconfidence that may place them in dangerous and potentially fatal situations.

I came to this realization quite a few years ago, when I was driving up a hill at the time high school kids were getting off the school bus. A teenage boy pushed s teenage girl right in front of my car! Was he trying to murder her? No! They both broke out laughing as I came to a screeching halt. There was nothing malicious about the event. The boy had no sense of mortality, and neither did the girl, apparently. Teenagers think they will live forever.

I live in Austin, and used to party on Lake Travis all the time. I have awesome memories of those days. But… it is very dangerous. It’s a hot spot for party boats and drinking. Many young people have lost their lives on that lake due to negligence. I can’t understand why these kids lied about what happened. I do believe it was an accident, and lying about it made it a crime. Sad sad story.

I didn't watch the vid yet, but the first thing that came to my mind would be that they were already drinking illegally and didn't want to get into trouble. Once that bad decision (to cover up the death) was made, it would be very hard to go back from it, even the next day.
It was probably an accident, and lying about it did make it a crime; but they also committed other crimes. Avoiding charges for drinking under age, purchasing alcohol under age and DWI are good reasons to lie.

In high school, I had something called "The 'Woo' Rule." This meant that I would hang-out until I heard the first drunk friend yell "Woooo!!!" and then I was out of there. 😂

Teens + Alcohol + Water are a lethal combination. They should have all been wearing safety vests. They spent only 5 minutes looking for him? You'd think he was worth more of their time than that. What a tragedy! I currently live by the Colorado River and it seems that most of the deadly boating accidents are fueled by alcohol.

@Billy Mumphry Try saying that to the relatives of the beautiful women who lost their lives about a year ago around Pirates Cove. Three women were thrown from a speed boat at night into the Colorado River after it hit another boat. The women were all in their 20s and exceptionally beautiful. They all died. It took over a year to find the body of one of them. This tragedy is only one of many and with your limited perception I hope you are never behind the wheel of a boat.

A child fell over snd the ties of the vest got caught under the propeller. Very sad.

NEVER ride on the bow of a boat. It is a recipe for disaster. Similar situation as these kids, but those involved were around 30. Cruising at night, alcohol involved and a guy on the bow. They hit what they believed was a log and the guy fell off and was hit by the prop. Took several days to find the body.

I went to college at SMU in Dallas (TCU's rival school) and went to ACL & Lake Travis every year for fraternity "away weekends". Speaking from experience, when college kids go down to Austin, all bets are off. We would start drinking on the bus ride down and continue drinking all weekend until the bus ride home. Alcohol + drugs + impulsive young college kids trying to impress each other is a dangerous combo. Add a large body of water to the mix & that danger increases tenfold. We always chartered "party barges" operated by commercial drivers who were very cautious about safety.
I remember two incidents specially: The first time I went, we were getting onto the boat when the owner told us we couldn't have any glass bottles onboard. Of course, all of our liquor bottles were glass so we had to leave those behind and stick to the beer kegs we had. Looking back, this was actually the best time I ever had, since there was limited beer and no hard alcohol so nobody was blackout drunk. We swam, danced, and had a great time. One year we rented 2 party boats, one for freshman & sophs and one for jr and sr. Once we got far enough out into the lake, about 30 minutes since we set off, they announced that we were stopping so we could swim and go to the other boat, but to not get into the water until they gave the signal that the propellers were fully stopped and the boat was anchored. A couple of guys ignored this and jumped over the boat railings as soon as the boat stopped moving. Immediately, the boat operators announced that the day was over and they were taking us back to the dock. We were all really upset and blamed them for "ruining our day". The guys were really nice but firm about it, saying that they had a zero tolerance policy for ignoring their safety commands and they would not continue our trip. We did not get our money back. Looking back now, I am grateful for this, as we had all been drinking heavily before going to the lake and someone could easily have drowned.
For any college kids reading this, I strongly suggest only taking commercially chartered party boats for these kinds of events. They deal with these risky situations all the time, and know the danger signs to look out for. Even then, it is still incredibly risky. Every year, without fail, there was someone who fell and got injured, cut up their feet and legs climbing the rocks, or got alcohol poisoning. Make sure you also have plenty of water available and sunscreen, and know your limits.
I've been thinking lately about the party buses people take. I live in the Los Angeles area, where a lot of people like to go to Las Vegas for the weekend, and a lot of them take party buses for the trip. I would not want to go on one, but presumably it's a lot safer that way. There's talk of building a high speed rail line along that route, and I've been thinking that the trains would need some "party cars" with lots of padding, some toilets, and the ability to be hosed out after each trip.
The advice you offer seems so sensible and basic...as a 44 yr old man who partied hard as a teen and frat boy, I imagine hearing the same message at that age would've induced an eye roll and a stfu from me and my crew of numbskulls. Cause I heard the same type of messages from my parents about drinking related stuff, from teachers, and eventually from court ordered counselors (dui)...by sheer luck I survived that era with only some bumps and bruises, it could've been much different. As a parent now, it's a hard message to convey, I see the same reaction I would've given.

Sadly, drinking alcohol and boating do not mix. When I was a senior in high school, a friend of mine had a younger brother who made a dangerous mistake and jumped off a railroad trestle and broke his neck. He became a wheelchair bound quadriplegic. The next summer another friend had an older brother who died from drowning while water skiing.
The common denominator was alcohol.
Two years later, another school friend died from taking a midnight swim while drunk.
Swimming and drinking don’t mix. Boating and drinking don’t mix.
Most outdoor activities and alcohol don’t mix.
The mixture of alchohol and anyone at any age does not mix well. Adults are not anymore responsible.

The world is such a cruel, dark and damp place. It can be very lonely in the winds of change. One can only wonder why the world is so cruel. I for one, do not believe in the concept of sin for I believe all religion to be man made, but why is nature so cruel? Why can fate be so cruel? These questions are far beyond or human capabilities to understand. Heliopolis is one example. Many women and men probably got together and danced by the fire, held hands, sang and dance, but cruel humans come along and pillage them. For why, or why do they do such things? Why cause pain to another? It never made much sense to me to be honest.
Or how about the bow of the WW2 boat in the air? I never understood that either because Savage was in a waffle house some 30 years ago and this guy there was bragging about how he got married and Randy Savage was sitting there hungry and you know what he said? He said "Buddy. I don't give a fuuuuuck". That's pretty crazy there. And the guy said "Well you better give a fuck" and a brawl escalated to the levels of rig or rag. Can you believe that? Rig or rag levels of sluns.
these kind of scenarios are exactly what fuels me to continue to be sober (2 years this September). you can cannot control the actions of people around you, such as a concert, a bar, or in this case a boat. alcohol may not be "terrible" but 100 percent of actions taken are with the absence of alcohol are much more sensible and more calm. this is why I will never drink again. I dont want to be a apart of the problem, and I dont want to be around someone who could bring problems into my life. Alcohol is the most insidious toxin that is worshiped in society.

I was raised by abusive alcoholics and then married one, it wasn't my first marriage but I've been divorced 22 years and will never have Anything to do with a person that even sometimes drinks anymore. It affected me so bad that I won't, haven't had any kind of relationship other than a causal talk with a male( in public) in all this time. Alcohol doesn't just effect the alcoholic! This is why Prohibition was enacted. I have read that statistically, it was starting to work shortly before it was repealed. These days, everybody seems to be in a rush to legalize marijuana. In my opinion, you can get loaded with booze, and you can smoke nicotine; why are any additional forms of mind squelching and recreational air pollution needed?
@@exrobowidow1617 MJ is a different ‘feel’ of course but it also helps me and so many others so much with pain and sleep and anxiety. (I can’t stand smoking it and that way of taking it doesn’t help my pain anyway since it’s just a ‘head’ high. So I do edibles.) Anywho, I developed a problem with alcohol so it’s just better to not drink at all. (I never had a problem with alcohol until I was trying to control severe nerve pain without much help from doctors. Then I discovered MJ.) I have found that even after long use of MJ, if I’m not hurting and I don’t need it, I don’t have withdrawals. It also doesn’t make me feel like crap after it wears off, like alcohol affects me. I think it’s pretty evident that MJ is much safer than alcohol. Of course people can abuse it but I think it has less chance of being abused. Just my opinion. Sorry for the long comment😜.

I remember my immature self drinking at a college party as a freshman and the police show up because of a noise complaint - I was terrified I was going to be arrested, lose my athletic scholarship and ruin my life (perhaps jail time??) because I was only 18 at the time. I think I hid in a closet and was ready to run out of the back door if I had to.
The overwhelming irrational fear of being caught with alcohol as a minor is real. I think I would have been honest with the police about everything but perhaps would have minimized my involvement with the alcohol in the statement.
Why drink if so in fear? If you felt old enough to drink then you are old enough to take full responsibility for your actions. Any 18 years olds are old enough to take responsibility for their actions. Must be the way how some Americans raise their children.

Repressing youth leads to these kinds of things, it doesn't prevent them. When kids with no real world experience get their first taste of freedom they go way to far, even the Amish know this, and allow for it.

Its strange to me to be considered an adult, but I can't purchase adult beverages? This is what causes reckless drinking behavior and related deaths. If alcohol weren't so "forbidden" there wouldn't be such a hurry to try it and we'd all respect it a little bit more.
@@PiranahKill Right. It's a much bigger problem than how Americans are raising their children. Our drinking culture was developed by the prohibition. There's whole family legacy's built by bootleg distilleries. The underage drinking is almost expected by most Americans, but there is very little education about alcohol safety and it's killing us. "Breath, Nolan, Breath" a doc on RUclips for example. Every politician probably has a youth record and there's more than enough evidence from our Presidential representative (pretend Biden doesn't even exist, there's STILL so much drunk history in that house).
An 18 year old can buy a gun, but can't drink. A 15 year old can be tried as an adult but can't drive. A 21 year old can drink but can't rent a car. Its not about taking responsibility for your age, it's about being afforded the *right* to be responsible.
@@PiranahKill repressing the children is the way how a lot of American families raise their children then. I grew up in Europe and my parents would let me go party at the age of 15. I would drink some beer but never got drunk or threw up from drinking. I understand that not everyone is the same but lying to law enforcement or anyone else is unacceptable. Wonder if parents still teach their children that lying is not okay... I have encountered plenty of American college students lying while I worked on campus.
I appreciate the empathetic analysis here, really appreciated when you said this time is primarily about survival. I think once you’re out of those years it’s easy to forget how little we know what we’re doing but that is how I felt. I’m 22 now and so thankful nobody died as a result of my mistakes as a kid.

@@dqreps do you think every decision each person made in this situation would’ve been the exact same had they not been drinking? Alcohol makes people do stupid things, unfortunately - especially when you’re young and inexperienced and don’t realize how it truly effects you. I can think of a couple things I did after drinking while still in high school where I just am mortified and cringing despite the fact it’s long over and no one died bc I did something or said something stupid while inebriated. I don’t think alcohol itself is to blame but it played a significant part. Hell, alcohol and boats/water activities (?! ha) don’t usually mix well even if you know how alcohol effects you. It was just bad bad bad all around. I wouldn’t have trusted them alone with a boat without the alcohol either.
Dr. Grande, I am interested in your take on Anne Heche, in particular when may one assume brain damage/death occurs? What condition might she have been in when she sat upright on the gurney when the EMT’s were taking her to the ambulance? Thanks for all you do.
Burns initially don't hurt , but when the nerve endings come back the pain is excruciating. Most people are put into a medically induced coma , too help this out. Depending on the thickness of the burns , infection is a major concern. You also do neuro observation , if the pupils are fixed and dilated a sign the brain is not working (other words brain dead )an eeg would be done at . least three times to see if there is any electric movement in the brain , if not technology your brain is dead..The next of kin and the Doctors have too make the decision too take the person off life support.

Anne had airway damage from smoke inhalation as well as thermal injuries to her airway and of course to her skin. She also suffered a sternal fracture which can cause hemorrhaging, pain and difficulty breathing. The reason she sat straight up on the stretcher may have been because she was in pain, having difficulty breathing and/or in a state of shock and delirium. She was already behaving erratically when she rammed a garage door earlier then fled down the street and plowed into another home causing it and her car to catch fire. She tested positive for cocaine as well as fentanyl, but because the testing wasn’t done until hours after she was hospitalized the fentanyl was likely administered for pain in the hospital. Cocaine induced psychosis is a possibility and can cause paranoia and hallucinations. I am an RN and work in ICU and this is what I have gathered from reports on-line combined with my nursing background. I hope this helps. I too would like to see Dr. Grande’s analysis of this subject.

I think in high school there should be an entire class or just a regular period devoted to the discussion of bad situations people put themselves in like this. Kids will probably still do them, but at least maybe they'll have more data points to make good decisions.

@Tanif's Tasty Tips I think part of the problem is how it's being told. You can't just tell a kid something is bad, you have to have a way to make them feel it emotionally.

Too much sympathy for what amounts to be incredibly callous and calculated behaviour. To switch so quickly to self-preservation mode is actually quite disturbing and being a teenager is no excuse. They couldn't give two fucks about their friend. Some may argue that with their whole lives ahead of them, they shouldn't be charged for what amounts to be trivial crimes e.g lying to the police and providing alcohol to minors, but really the charges also are representative of their cold-hearted behaviour. I would imagine if they'd spent more than 30 seconds looking for their friend, most charges would have been dropped. Echoes of Michelle Carter...
I understand they were just drunk kids having fun, but somebody died, they made no real effort to help the guy, they were a danger to any other boaters who may have been on the water, lied, deleted evidence etc... I feel like the charges are pretty light for all of that. Also, this is taking their word that it was an accident. I seriously doubt it was planned, but alcohol can heat situations up.
I really appreciate your final take on this one about how the public is expected never to lie, but the police do it as a routine tactic, and how sometimes people will be punished by their own actions to the point that minor infractions are pointless to prosecute. That is so completely true in my experience.

I am Dr. Grande. Thanks for your comment. Onto item #1. While this is true, my head sometimes experiences anxiety, stress, various emotional moods and even headaches like most humans. Item #2. However, I would agree that I tend to keep a level head as my head stays positioned at an upward circumference at a proper 75 degree angle, allowing me to conduct each analysis with the utmost purity and unbiased commentary.. They are not "KIDS" and if found guilty, should suffer adult consequences for their actions.
They are but, still young. Most of them do not have the skills, wisdom, experiances or honed introspection to avoid reacting with self preservation even fear of older adults anger, condemnation and our laws. There should be consequences, but we older adults should use such occation to teach what we mean by civic morality.
Time is the judge, they may run but ultimately this will catch up with them time and time again all threw their lives. They are sentenced regardless of courts.

Kiely Rodni has been missing for one week and the teens and young adults at the lake party are being encouraged by adults not to talk to law enforcement. These young adults literally chose to create a perfect storm and when things went badly they created a second one to follow.

How about the effects of poor parenting. So much of this was done via an entitlement attitude,
which had to be instilled by the parents. Poor decision after poor decision compounded by lies does not show a good upbringing.
Parents have no legal or cultural authority to tell their children what to do. We also do not like strict parents in the west

Watching your video I just thought back to my teen years and how I took stupid chances because I didn’t understand the consequences of my choices at that point in life .
That being said I’m a little horrified they didn’t stop the boat immediately call 911 immediately and stay in that spot looking for that young man.
Every time I hear about these sad tragedies I think about how lucky I was in my teens and 20s that my bad choices did not cause any deaths.
It seems like the police are charging them mostly because they were mad about being lied to.

Please remember that it is the DA's office (prosecutors) who decide whether or not to pursue criminal charges in court. The police investigate and provide evidence, but adjudication happens in court.
When things go wrong, just suck it up and come clean. Deciding that ahead will save making so many bad decisions to try to cover things up. Rarely does it work, but even if it does it becomes a priority above saving someone’s life a lot of times, and then you later regret trying to save yourself by sacrificing a friend. Just own up, and decide you will beforehand when it can matter.
Just tonight I was thinking about how as a teenager spending summers at a lake in Canada nobody drove cars anywhere we drove boats. In particular we drove every night to someone's party on the lake and every night, in the pitch black, drove our boat home across this massive lake. I had 1 friend that sunk his boat and managed to swim to an island but it was a miracle worse didn't happen. We were young and did not have forethought or fear. We should have. I don't know how I survived those years (this was the late 70s).

Evidence tampering reduces the investigator's (and society's) ability to know what happened, whether there was a murder or an accident, so I think there should be serious penalties whether there ends up being a murder or not. If you don't like those penalties, don't destroy evidence.
I think this is more an attempt to punish them for the death by way of unrelated charges.
Delaney pushed Jack and he died. It’s manslaughter. It doesn’t matter that she didn’t realize it would make him lose his balance - (i) it did make him lose his balance and (ii) her own drunkenness is what caused her to not be able to assess the situation.
Every weekend it happens on the roads. On the roads though usually the finger can be pointed at one victim. Here a boat load were complicit.

It would be interesting to have you cover Lake Lanier in Georgia. There are multiple drownings there every year and always stories and comments about the lake being haunted and claiming lives as retribution for the citizens of Otisville-a town now under the surface of Lake Lanier. The stories of haunted ancestors are ridiculous and the drownings often involve excessive drinking and acting foolish. This year there have been five drownings already and the haunted lake stories resurfaced as they do every year. I would love to hear your take on this. Thanks.

They were properly charged only I would have thrown in a misdemeanor manslaughter for the playful pusher and possibly the boat operator and owner upon careful review of the facts. DUIs for the boat operators and public intoxication all around. (except for the kid who didn't drink but was convinced to say he was at the wheel, he would of course get that false statement charge)
Agreed, he said they shouldn't be charged w/ tampering with evidence because they didn't know it was illegal. That's a poor legal defense and wouldn't hold up in court. Ignorance of the law doesn't absolve you from it.

The tampering with evidence charge is indeed support. It shows consciousness of guilt, whether that guilt was the misdemeanor alcohol charges or covering up what could be a more serious crime. The while group went very quickly into actions to obfuscate the events of that night.
"Learning opportunity" how do they learn UNLESS there is a severe consequence to face. These days literally so many young people have NO value for human life unless it is they own.

The front of a boat is indeed bow. But there is no cruise control on a boat. There could be an auto pilot. But that’s less common on boats in the size you use for wakeboarding.
I watched the first 20 minutes of the movie Alive and I was super stoked to fly in a plane through the Andes. Now I'm sitting in a snow drift chewing on Bob's barbecued leg; ...if only I'd listened to Dr. Grande's sage advice to watch the whole movie before copying it, I'd be sitting in the warmth and comfort of my own home chewing on Bob's barbecued leg with fava beans and nice Chianti.

Great job Dr. Grande. The fact that they decided collectively to lie about this horrific incident that led to this young man's death is disgusting. The irony that the Elle was attending a Christian university speaks volumes. The fact that not one of these jerks decided to tell the truth about the loss of a life is heartbreaking. This is our future folks, basic human decency has left the building. My deepest condolences to his family.
