can we take a moment to appreciate just how fucking creepy all the characters look in this nightmare game? This is like a creepypasta bootleg and soon shit is gonna get hyper realistic
Aw, shit, dude...this was my childhood! No kidding, I played this on a pirated GBA cartridge from Bali that had a couple hundred NES games on it, both normal and pirated games/hacks.
The names are based on the Japanese names for the characters (Nokonoko is the Japanese name for Koopa Troopas, Kinopio is Toad, etc.), though the romanization is a little off for some of them.
Except this was actually a pretty legit port of Street Fighter considering it was on NES, which never had a fighting game and super limited hardware capability. Also, the backgrounds are pretty legit, and all the characters are fully animated and movesets are themed (they don't have Yossy spewing fireballs or anything silly), which is impressive. It also preceded Super Smash Brothers by like 5 years.
I know right? you get super exited to plug in the cartridge when only a garbled mess comes up the screen, you blow on the cartridge, and the same garbled mess comes up, it was common for bootleg Nintendo games to have NOTHING in them, or were corrupted beyond playability
For clarification's sake, Yossy used to be Yoshi's Japanese name. NokoNoko is Koopa Troopa's Japanese name (hence why the shell weapon in Super Mario RPG is the NokNok Shell). Kinopio is Toad's Japanese name.
Jake Miller Because bootleggers don't really look at the source material and they saw Mario *kart* was popular and made a street fighter NES bootleg because they also usually make games at least 1 generation off or on the wrong system.
Did you see that Kart was *bold*? I thought that I implied it was reskinned to look like Mario Kart characters because it was popular but I guess it wasn't overtly obvious.
Yes but that game is family fun, but this is more like why is princess peach wearing a short skirt and forced to fight yossy? Why is he named yossy, was yoshi tired of his slave name. This game has all questions and has no answers.
Whoever made it really didn't know how balancing works (I mean, look at Bowser and Yoshi), but at least it's a game rather than a screen of code-garble.
Wow, they need to play more bootlegs. Or make a new spin-off show that focuses just on bootleg games. The only bootleg I ever played was a Super Mario Brothers rip-off made for the Commodore 64. It was actually pretty good from what I can remember. Only things different from the real SMB were the enemies, the goombas looked different, there were no koopa troopas, and Bowser was replaced with an actual dragon. The other thing different were the power-ups. No fire flowers. Instead you had pineapples or something. I forget. I'd also like to see them play old PC games. I mean old old PC games. I can remember playing one as a kid called Halloween Harry. All I can remember about it is you had a Jetpack, a Flamethrower, and you fought aliens. It was a hoot! Then I can remember another game called Xargon. It had these freaky green things I called Ass Munchers as a kid cause they looked like they were biting their own ass. Then there was another one that played top-down like the original Legend of Zelda. You played as Thor and could throw your hammer like a boomerang. I forget the name of it though.
for a minute there i was concerned we wouldnt get to see the names of all the characters but luckily that leaderboard at the end there gave us the full experience
No, it was Yoshi(NA)/Yoshi's Egg (JP)/Mario and Yoshi(EU) in 1991. Yoshi's Cookie was released in 1992. However the first yoshi game is still SMW (SNES) in 1990 (in JP).
Yoshi, known as Yoshi's Egg (Japanese: ヨッシーのたまご Hepburn: Yosshī no Tamago?) in Japan and Mario & Yoshi in Europe and Australia, is a puzzle video game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. The game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy consoles. Both versions were first released simultaneously in Japan on December 14, 1991, and then released in all other regions the following year. Super Mario World (Japanese: スーパーマリオワールド Hepburn: Sūpā Mario Wārudo?), subtitled Super Mario Bros. 4 (スーパーマリオブラザーズ4 Sūpā Mario Burazāzu fō?) for its original Japanese release,[1] is a 1990 platform video game developed and published by Nintendo as a pack-in launch title for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).
There's also the Sega Master System which was Sega's first console as well as its handheld counterpart the Game Gear. There was also the Sega Nomad which was a handheld Genesis.
When I saw this I legitimately had a moment when I thought: "Man, an actual Mario fighting game would be great, and they could have other Nintendo characters in it and...wait...oh, yeah that is a thing."
I actually remember somehow BEATING this game when I was a kid despite not having literally any idea what I was doing. I had it on a bootleg "300 in 1" gameboy advance cartridge that I played on my Nintendo DS. It was filled with both bootlegs and legit Mario games.
***** it might but i doubt it. not that many people owned it. the NES revived the video game market, and by the time people wanted to buy video games again then genesis came out. but you could always try. no harm in that
The crazy thing is that this game has animated tiles, which means they made this for custom NES carts. Unless they got a deal on some surplus Mario 3 carts that's a weird risk for a bootleg to take!
Yoshi did appear on the NES, it was quite late into the life cycle of the console, and was IIRC the first game programmed by Game Freak years before Pokémon would be a thing.
Kinopio was toad. I know because I owned this game. Along with all kinds of weird as fuck bootlegs, like Sonic 4 where you rescue hundreds of Marios and Pokemon Vietnamese Crystal where getting a potion showed the text "drug bag! fuck"
MLG Kirby It really isn't the internet man. The audio will keep playing, but the video will freeze on one frame. I have to scroll the video back like 20 seconds so that the video re-buffers.

What? No mention of the Master System? That was SEGA's first ever console and it is so hugely overlooked. Also, there was the Game Gear, but that was a handheld. Not a console. Also, I kind of liked this bootleg... but... that music... I don't remember that 'music' being so awful. My ears are bleeding. But that aside, Dan and Arin should totally play more shtty bootleg games! I love bootlegs because of their sheer shittiness and would love to see them play more of them. My favorite episodes of anything on RUclips tend to involve bootlegs. The Disney bootlegs and Pokemon bootlegs episodes from JonTron are two of my favorite episodes for that reason alone.

'pretty legit' and this game are not even close to the same ballpark.
This is actually good for a bootleg.
Especially being NES, I'd bet a lot of real companies would do a lot worse.
I know right? you get super exited to plug in the cartridge when only a garbled mess comes up the screen, you blow on the cartridge, and the same garbled mess comes up, it was common for bootleg Nintendo games to have NOTHING in them, or were corrupted beyond playability
Am I really seeing props for this? That's like saying, "Hey, this ain't too bad for dog shit."
I have always wanted to see Yossy just punch Princess Peach in the face with complete seriousness in his eyes.

For clarification's sake, Yossy used to be Yoshi's Japanese name. NokoNoko is Koopa Troopa's Japanese name (hence why the shell weapon in Super Mario RPG is the NokNok Shell). Kinopio is Toad's Japanese name.

Fun Fact: In Japan, Koopa is referred to as Nokonoko, and Bowser is referred to as Koopa. They just forgot to properly localize its name.
I guess that explains the NokNok Shell from Mario RPG.
And Toad is Kinopio
which is funny knowing that the name for japanese bower is the same as his foot soldiers overseas.
Catusfelony True.
My headcanon retcons it as Koopa for the name of turtle tribe and Bowser Koopa for the king's full name.
Remind me again why kart is in the title?
Jake Miller Because bootleggers don't really look at the source material and they saw Mario *kart* was popular and made a street fighter NES bootleg because they also usually make games at least 1 generation off or on the wrong system.
Matthew Coyle or because they're mario kart characters
WeavileGuy that's what I said. They saw Mario Kart and went "must be a series called kart" and made reskinned nes street fighter.
Matthew Coyle
that is not what you said
Did you see that Kart was *bold*? I thought that I implied it was reskinned to look like Mario Kart characters because it was popular but I guess it wasn't overtly obvious.
Where can I buy the soundtrack for this game??? I love getting throbbing headaches, this is just what I need
I'd recommend the Rocky and Bullwinkle NES game
Nobody I've gotta get the Redbook on this masterpiece. Puts Sunsoft's music to shame.
Try the Crazy Bus Theme for the Sega Genesis.
Its perfect in every way possible.
I'm starting to like the idea of a post apocalyptic mushroom kingdom where everyone is forced to fight to death. For no reason besides just cause.

Remarkable how often those two traits coincide

Screw Super Smash Brothers. This is a true fighting game.
Me: Man... nintendo should make a mario based fighter.
10 seconds later: OH WAIT.
the first game with yoshi in it was yoshi's cookie for the nes
No, it was Yoshi(NA)/Yoshi's Egg (JP)/Mario and Yoshi(EU) in 1991. Yoshi's Cookie was released in 1992. However the first yoshi game is still SMW (SNES) in 1990 (in JP).
The first Yoshi game is Yoshi. It is like a Yoshi version of Tetris. I know cuz I have it.
Topphat Gamer nice
I guarantee you it was Super Mario World

Bootleg character names are some of my favorite things.
I'm gonna need a solid 119 more episodes of this
Always get hyped up listening to the game grumps vs intro!

God, Arin needs a Markiplier refresher. He has no enthusiasm for anything he does anymore.
As a kid that grew up with bootlegs, this was a big part of my childhood
That mega man x with Dan thing that one guy made has ruined me forever. It really sounded like Dan was a soundboard at the start of this episode
hamish rattray that's how infuriatingly dull he is
You really need to play more bootleg games, this was hilarious.
You Should Send this game to +Cinemassacre so that James and Mike can play this Game +GameGrumps
I actually remember somehow BEATING this game when I was a kid despite not having literally any idea what I was doing. I had it on a bootleg "300 in 1" gameboy advance cartridge that I played on my Nintendo DS. It was filled with both bootlegs and legit Mario games.
The music in this game legitimately made my head hurt.
Am I the only one who loved this game? It was one of my favorite out of two hundred games on a bootleg copy of Mario & Luigi: All Star Saga.
The Yoshi NES game came out post-SMW.
Also like how he said that Yoshi wasn't always meant to be in Mario Games, when Miyamoto wanted Yoshi in as early as the very first mario game.
This is first time I've ever seen them play a bootleg
This Bowser is all like: "IM TINY BOWSER!!!!!"
I really want to thank Gamegrumps for using 60fps, its the only way to get the NES experience Right.

I love the irony of the Koopa making a peace sign in the character select.
This seems like Double Dragon, Mario, and Mortal Kombat had a three way
What's weird is the background and the peaceful background music (not the high pitch mix of beeps) of the first stage gives me a tranquil feeling
so how many people guessed Arin would pick Peach?
Oh my god. How did I miss this gem of an upload?
I remember this game, I played it all the time on my gameboy....
CreativeChips I can't stop playing it on Xbox one.it sucks that the graphics are too good for it though,it makes me lag so much.
I'M SO GLAD THEY PLAYED THIS I was like about to start writing an email to them about this when I saw it.
Ever since that naked Rom hack of river city ransom, I'm always a little bit wary about these Rom hacks
and yes, that was actually a thing
Ever play the naked rom for punch out? It'll ruin it forever
I'm so glad you have finally decided to step into Theo world of bootleg games.

Actually Arin Yoshi was supposed to be in Super Mario Bros but the couldnt add him because of hardware limitations
Yoshi did appear on the NES, it was quite late into the life cycle of the console, and was IIRC the first game programmed by Game Freak years before Pokémon would be a thing.

Super Smash Bros looks different than I remember
I can already hear the faint sounds of Woolie preparing this for scrublords.
Oh GOD, imagine Mario in Mortal Kombat.
He needs to have a fatality where he very brutally and grotesquely squishes his opponent by stomping on them.
Or his SSB Final Smash, but melting his opponents
His x-ray move is to stick a plunger to his opponent's mouth and suck out all their guts.
I'm not sure - I still can't get "Racist Mario" out of my head... :(
Lucas Bell theres an old flash game called mario combat where mario beats the mess out of koopas
That's crazy. I was just reading console wars.
Not to be "that" guy, but yes, Yoshi was always a Mario character. The "Yoshi" puzzle game for the NES was released after Super Mario World.
He was first conceived as a member of the Koopa Clan iirc
megaman161 Could be. I think they wanted to include Yoshi in Mario 3 but couldn't. Still, he was always a Mario character for sure.
No, Miyamoto intended for Yoshi to be an ally character right from the start, but they couldn't get him to work in Super Mario Bros (the first, not 3) and then the whole concept just kinda got shelved until the SNES became a thing.
