    Nice video dude. I've been interested in the randomization stuff for a while and it's great to see something on the topic. It's very interesting how just using a small set of tools, depending on how the order is set up you get so many permutations.

    Another great video Ned. I’m all about randomization.
    One suggestion: when recording random midi, set the bpm to 999 and it will record faster. You can then play it back at your desired bpm and pause/replay bits you might like.

    I live in the NW regions of the US (Seattle), and we get the same way during bad summers. Once the red hits 85-89 F, watch out, road rage and grumpiness becomes the absolute norm. I'm afraid to talk to anyone when it's that hot. I guess it wouldn't be so bad, but MANY public places do not have air conditioner systems. You see fireplaces everywhere, but go to a bar, without A/C on a hot summer night? Nope, I'll patiently wait until the first rain of fall cools everyone down.
    it's too bad, 'cause i don't recall ever having summers that resemble the hot summers of the past 10 years or so.

    figured out a bug upon downloading and opening ned's set - either in expression control or in arpeggiator ... the mapped values to arp don't modulate them without first removing the mapped value and re-mapping. yet they are "greyed out" on arp and unable to be moved manually until remapped. this only occurs on arp. also, the value names under "mapping" on exp cont don't carry over. they just say, "map."
    edit - a quick way to combat this and kill it w/ 2 birds, is to "x" out the mapped function, then ctrl+z it back. the name will appear in the map as well.

    Brilliant as ever, thanks Ned. Conducting and recording this in this heat is an achievement (why is it 30 degrees in fucking Scotland, we’re not built for this aaaargh). p.s. arpeggiator to ‘free’ but using the re trigger set to a beat to taste gives an ace mixture of free-running silliness, but free-running silliness that kicks off on a given beat division.

    • @timnordberg7204
      @timnordberg7204 2 года назад +1

      another bonkers free-mode Arpeggiator tip is placing an Expression Control *after* a free-running Arpeggiator, setting MIDI in to Random, and controlling the free-running Arpeggiator's speed. Now, every free-timed note played at random speed will seed a new random value for the Arpeggiator's next note. Ground Control to Sun Ra, do you copy, Sun Ra?

    This is great, could you do something around generative chords please?

  • @N0B0DY_SP3C14L
    @N0B0DY_SP3C14L 2 года назад

    This wasn't bad, but to get things a bit more useful, I'd increase not lengths, add better intervals to the chords, and put a zbRandomPass plugin behind the chord to make it more sparse. I'd lose the arpeggiator, set the zb to taste, use 16ths with varying chances in the clip, and play with the scale tool a bit. Grab every 4 bars and some thing cool will appear sooner or later. Depending on the scale, you can get some really funky stabs and accent melodies. Great for cooking up starting points or whatever. And don't be afraid to touch up something that is almost cool.

  • @evolvet3k
    @evolvet3k 2 года назад +1

    i'm thinking that, when using the random function within the expression control module, the "Amt" column being set at 50% by default, means that the probability of any item to choose from in what is basically an array will be completely random, given that the min is 0 and max is 100 - ie for arp type, each item listed is just as likely as all others to be chosen at random. adjusting this percentage will adjust the likelihood of randomization along a line of probability that is set by the min and max. as well, the shape (logarithmic or linear) of the line? what does rise and fall accomplish?

  • @evolvet3k
    @evolvet3k 2 года назад +3

    thanks ned. always thought live was capable of something like this from a generative standpoint given its various components. just needs a nudge. i mean, max is truly capable of even deeper degrees of this. but who can be bothered with programming max?

      Just route the midi track with Simpler on it to another midi track.

    • @jesse154
      @jesse154 2 года назад

      @@NedRush unfortunately it only sends midi for the notes you draw in, not from the simpler device itself. For example if you set it to play 'thru' so it plays all slices from that note, then routing the midi only gives you that first note that is written in, and there doesn't seem to be midi data for the slices.
      Was just a leftfield idea I thought would be cool. Maybe its not possible though.
