I don't understand the hate.. this person here did a great job putting this video to help fellow cyclist. It's the knowledge plus the time and effort into making the video. But the majority of us love it so keep up the good work !!
I just suggested this video to my father after trying other videos on the installation of this front derailleur, and he replied: "I just watched it and thought it was absolutely fabulous. You're right he is so clear and explains things perfectly. I couldn't wish for a more perfect video. I'll watch it a lot of times before doing the installation." Danny I know you get some criticism for not having shortcut videos, but some of us absolutely prefer the thoroughness and of not leaving anything out. We appreciate the exact way you do your videos, good work.
Hi, This is an excellent guide for new bike builders or even for mechanics. I have been building road bikes ever since 1976, and all of the manufactures are upgrading and improving their components every two or three years. Your step by step approach has been very helpful in regards to the setup of the last and newest mechanical shifting system. I will recommend your channel to my fellow biker friends. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge with the world.
Thanks for the video!!! it shows clearly how to make it PROPERLY! I bought Trek Madone 2019 last year. nothing of this was done as you show it. I have a hole in my frame because of the bicycle MECHANIC in Rutland Cycling in Milton Keynes. He, obviously didn't use the little plate you showed us! The same think about the brakes... they were not adjusted and i needed to find it out myself. I hope there are more people like you in the cycling shops, who will do their job with pleasure! Thanks again!
Very clear, answers all my questions. Just finished installing my Shimano 105 R7000 front derailleur. Much more complicated compared to earliest versions of Shimano groups' front derailleurs, and it was easy due to this excellent video. Thanks.
you probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account? I was dumb lost my account password. I love any tips you can offer me!
@James Jamari I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and I'm in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you. This is the first video that explains _clearly_ the install & setup of this new generation of FDs. I have been struggling with a GRX 810 FD on a new build. Shimano's tech docs are about as clear as mud.
Definitvely the best tutorial video for installation and adjustment of this kind of FD. Not only because of the explanations on the FD itself, but also for the explanations on trim positions when pushing the shifters. For mtb users, there is no difference between shifting and triming so a tutorial without these clarifications is confusing for new road bike riders. So, well done!
Great one! saved me some pain when building new bike. I was wondering why is the derailleur completely ignoring my ST up-shifts (but down-shift was there). Appear it wasn't the derailleur itself, but somebody who sold me the ST-s R8000 messed with the shifting cable or just put it through, without noticing which gear is the lever on. Got them pretty much brand new, but without the original paper box (plastic bags and manuals only). Result - completely screwed operation when playing with the FD. Thanks again... saved me some head ache...
Wow, this is super helpful!!! Thank you so much, and yes, this is different, I have the FD-R8000 PDF manual from Shimano tech, this fills in a lot of the gaps, that cable routing after the clamp under the cap and through the chanel for one, that's completely new to me!
Excellent and so clearly demonstrated! I think this is identical for GRX-FD RX810 front derailleur. So confusing if you expect this to be like all previous "normal" front derailleurs!! You could broaden your viewing if you include more derailleurs.
That's a great video! I wish I had watched it BEFORE I installed my front derailleur! Close ups are excellent! Thank you for taking the time to document and explain in such a concise way ; )
Best tutorial I have found on this. Great detail. Only thing I would add is be sure to take the slack out of the cable with the shifter in lowest gear. Then fix the cable to the pinch bolt and proceed with one shift up and then down to trim position.
Is that slack removed with the shifter in lowest position, related to what chainring? What is lowest? In other words, the cable in the shifter should it be either: all the way out or all the way inside itself?
@@robertp7209 so sorry, it has been months since I did the work and I have actually forgotten what the hell my procedure exactly was. Follow his instructions and also cross check the work with the Shimano manual online and you will get it right. Cable would be all the way out. Your cage would be over the small chainring in low gear front.
@@csleclerc57 - I appreciate the response. I have the Shimano pdf of the Dealer Manual, but not so clear. First time with the new style derailleur much different than prior.
@@robertp7209 I know exactly where your coming from. I just dug in and finally understood. The manual is pretty brief. I found the most important part of setting it up is accurate position of the cage and initial cable tension.
Just got a new bike with Grx 800 and my front derailleur started hitting my crank. I didn't install it so this video helped in the fine tuning as I had no idea what all the new screws and lines meant. I could of let the shop deal with it but then I wouldn't learn and more money in my pocket.
Perfect! Fast, easy, and thorough. I missed the stabilizer screw on the 105 i just replaced with an Ultegra r8000 so this was enlightening and now I have a spare!
Great video using it to setup my new GRX mech today. FYI for the clamp on adapter part number SM-AD91-MS 31.8/28.6 it has a small built in welded nub, where the stabilizing screw presses against when its turned outwards, so no need for the small piece of metal, and in fact the small piece of metal wouldn't physically fit due to this little built in nub :)
Excellent video. I don’t often mess with front derailleurs anymore but was having issues with a GRX I put on. Set up has changed a lot since I had touched one. I was making a mistake on the limit adjustments and I wasn’t setting them in the trim position in the big ring. Works perfect now.
I Have watched your video time and time again . It is absolutely great how you take your time to explain the full setup of the R8000 front derailleur. I uses your video as a reference point to start and finish any bike i am working on. Thank you for a excellent workshop reference. Gerald - Wales UK
This is a fabulous video - all the steps explained, all the difficult bits pointed out, it's not rushed and it's very clear. Well done! A very professional and useful piece of work :-)
Excellent video, thanks! The one thing that confused me was what position the shifter should be in when the cable is attached/tightened. Eventually I figured out it should be in the position to make the cable the longest, for the small chain ring.
Hey man, this is a great vid, thanks for taking the time to do it. What I would like to see your version of is setting up the gears for an ENTRY LEVEL mountain bike, you know, something with 3 chainrings and 7,8 or 9 cogs in the back. I've seen a bunch of other ones but I like the way you explain things. Thanks!
I'm not sure if you do video requests, but I've been searching for a Manitou Markhor service guide and have been unable to find a single one. I would be so happy if you produced one. Cheers from Bulgaria!
Man, you are right on with this tutorial. Thank you so much! I might add that in my own experience, I thought I had my derailleur straight, but I had to tweak it very slightly with the tension screw to get the best performance. I'm sure it was a lack of experience issue on my part. Now it is smooth as butter thanks to you!
Especially helpfull are the close ups of the small bits and pieces such as the stabilizing screw and where the chain should rub (or rather not rub). Great that you take the effort to find a good viewing angle which sometimes cannot even be achieved by eye... ;-) so that we know what we are doing and should aim for. Thanks!
Thanks for this exceptional tutorial video. I am building my first bike, a 2020 RLT9 RDO. I have not gotten to the front derailleur yet, but now I am prepared. Seems quite simple.
This is a great tutorial. I can stop scratching my head! Only thing I would say you need to correct, is you should clamp your work stand at the seat stem. I read that if you clamp a carbon frame, you risk crushing your frame because it is not designed to withstand such forces. Once again, great tutorial, keep up the good work
Thank you for a very helpful video. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Took the bike out for a ride today after a new installation and everything worked perfectly. Had a good laugh at your torch moment 😁
Excellent instructional video, it really helps to clarify the instructions in the Shimano dealer manual. One question...before clamping down the cable, what position should the shifter be in? Should all the slack be taken out and moved to position (V) as shown on page 18 of the manual?
Thanks for posting this, you really helped me out. Our bike shops have limited hours and a back log. With this video I was able to dial my setup and save some money!
Thanks for this video, it helped me adjust my shimano GRX groupset. I was very familiar with the old system for front derailleurs. Unfortunately I no longer had the stickers on my bike. But a coin was enough to adjust the height of the chainring and I understood the purpose of the trim position. 😊
Other Guys like park tools do iT differntly To adjust the limitscrews They put front small ring / back largest ring ( Lowes gear) and front largest ring / highest gear (smallst ring) You make the chain cross to adjust, they Dont....... what is best? Love your video’s
Thanks for this. I made the mistake of following the QR code to the users manual. Apart from telling me the name of the parts, a bunch of cover-their-asses safety notices, it contains NO USEFUL INFORMATION ON HOW TO INSTALL/SETUP/TUNE. This video however told me all I needed. Thanks again!
excellent documenting and explaining the operation and fitting of the Ultegra FD R8000. Personally I find the trimming on Shimano mechanical shifters a bit of a hack, forward slash bodge. My future will be Di2
Thanks, I’ve always wondered what this little piece is meant for. But I apparently don’t need it, as in my case the bolt hits the holder, not the frame - on both of my bikes, Cervelo S3 (Ultegra 8000) and Cervelo Aspero (GRX 810). Seems to depend on the frame manufacturer how big this hanger belonging to the frame is. Strange enough anyway.
Thank you so much! My Canyon arrived with a really bad adjusted Front Derailleur (the cage brushed the crank arm, wtf?!) and with your video I fixed it! It is my first bike with a braze on type, so I had no idea how to adjust it. I guess that's the price you pay for a bike from the Internet.
Could you adjust it really properly? My Endurace arrived today - I acknowledged the same and tried to fix it. On the lowest gear, with the L screw completely out, the chain still scratches on the inner side of the derailieur. I think its something about the measurements of the frame itself.
@@ekie7361 My derailleur was not parallel to the chainring. So I had to loosen the mounting bolt and turn the derailleur inward which solved all of my problems. But keep in mind that you can trim the front derailleur. So even when you shifted to the small chainring, there is another "half click" left which brings the cage even more inward.
Should there be any forwards/backward play in the front cage? I can wiggle mine back and forth wjth my fingers after shop set it up. Not sure how to tighten it or if it's supposed to be loose like that
Just a tip. I was focussing on these instructions and overlooked that the inside skid plate was missing on the derailleur mechanism. It is only a small push in piece of plastic. I couldn't get the chain to shift to the larger ring. Replaced the skid plate and voila. Its worth checking that yours is there and in good conditions
Great video. Unfortunately, my frame design leaves the stiffening screw to open air. It is not able to make contact with anything. Your video was helpful in correcting other mechanics mistakes. Thanks
@@rogerhampton2844 after I've seen this video I did a homemade plate which I glued it with a 3M double tape taken from my gopro support. After this operation my front derailleur is more stiff. I made this this without removing the FD. Juste find a small metal plate and give it a round shape using two pliers (if your bolt touch the round part of your frame ) . Good luck
Very good tutorial overall but I think you're mistaken, the "stabilizing screw" I belive are used to adjust the pitch or angle of the front DR so it's parallel to the chain line. Same as if you loosen a clamp on Dr and rotade it on the seat tube a little.
Excellent video, even if the subtitles in French lack precision. Shimano managed a great feat with their new derailleurs before ... the old ones worked perfectly, I do not really see the interest of making a new method of adjustment (which in the process is much more complicated to achieve than the old method. ..). Worse, these new derailleurs are not compatible on my CBT Italia frame, the support screw is found in the gap between the frame and the tire, it does not support anything ... So I had to replace the derailleur . The rival sram I had replaced was even nicer than the old 105 5800 ... I will watch it several times because some points are still too vague.
Excellent. Any thoughts on why I only get slight movement from top to TOP-TRIM positions? I think I only get about a mm of movement whereas yours is much more?
does the Ultegra 8000 front mech ever stay true? Mine gets fixed and within a couple of weeks it's rubbing again. Repeat ad nauseam it seems :-( (I think I'm understanding the benefit of Di2 without having it)
Great video, no instructions for my Ultegera very useful clip I did not no about the piece of metal tab just found it on my floor must have dropped it when unpacking.
@2:49 you guide us on position of the derailleur arm...a bit later you say for a Braze on you need to arm about 1mm inwards of the largest chainring rather than level. or parallel. What position should that be for a Braze on FD using a Clamp adapter? I purchased at 105 R7000 camp-on FD, but was sent a Braze on. Rather than the hassle of return/exchanging, I bought the Shimano Clamp Adapter....thanks
I personally would have sent it back. The clamp on is a little bit more weight but also a stiffer mount, so it does not need this additional new screw that pushes on the frame.
this was a perfect tutorial thx. i have still when shifting to the big cog. it feels too hard to shift. any ideas to solve that problem? is this anyhow a common issue?
Ultegra FD-8000 braze on...carbon frame with mounting plate. No matter how I adjust the derailleur, inner and outer screws and the screw that contacts the mounting plate on the frame, the chain guide seems angled so that the rear is more outward then the front, meaning I can get the guide parallel with the chainring. Is there is no way to pivot the derailleur on/in the mounting plate so that I can adjust the chain guide to get parallel. I'm stumped
The slot in the bracket the derailleur bolts to is wide enough to allow you to move not just up and down, but in and out. In and out is what you need. Is the slot wider than the bolt?

Great video. Unfortunately, my frame design leaves the stiffening screw to open air. It is not able to make contact with anything. Your video was helpful in correcting other mechanics mistakes. Thanks
mine too : the screw is in the air: I have a Giant Advance Defy 1 2o21
And mine Trek Domane SL6
Thank you!!! Saved my install. Keep up the content! Helped me on my GRX FD.
Great video! It was pretty easy to install my new front derailleur by following your video. Thanks
Thank you so much, was able to perfect my front derailleur adjustment thanks to you. Great video and we'll explained!!
Excellent. Any thoughts on why I only get slight movement from top to TOP-TRIM positions? I think I only get about a mm of movement whereas yours is much more?
does the Ultegra 8000 front mech ever stay true? Mine gets fixed and within a couple of weeks it's rubbing again. Repeat ad nauseam it seems :-( (I think I'm understanding the benefit of Di2 without having it)
Thank you. Very clear, very clear, even for non-English speakers.
Great video, no instructions for my Ultegera very useful clip I did not no about the piece of metal tab just found it on my floor must have dropped it when unpacking.
thanks brother for the tips, ultegra R8000 is well explained
But whats wrong if my left bolt does not move frame to the inner side ?
You Didn't tell whats is the best start position for all regulatings bolta.
