I think someone at Shimano Japan baked too many Marijuana cookies and fed them to the engineering team. And to think, at one point I once was part of the Shimano development team. Then one day this little "Over Engineered Monster Front Derailleur" appeared. Thanks to you, I finally learned, in absolute detail how to sleigh that monster, "BUT GOOD"! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, and again, THANK YOU.
Its the first time I have used your videos and Iam so impressed! Easy to follow and great work with the camera shows the details required easily. Thank you 😊
I've used several of your videos, mostly for installing Shimano stuff, and you're always spot on. Park Tool are good on the fundamentals, but you always include the extra little details that help me understand why something might not do what Park say it ought to do. So it's about time I said THANK YOU!
Bought a brand new TCR online and when it arrived front mech was rubbing, brilliant and helpful video that saved me a 2 hour round trip to the nearest workshop, thank you 👍🏼
I have watched a lot of bike insulation videos over the years and this is by far the best one I have ever watched. Very detailed and well explained. Thank you very much!
Thank you for your thorough explanations and guidance. I’ve just fit my new Ultegra without any problems whatsoever, due in part to your excellent videos. 🙌
Hi @@FreeToCycle, sorry to disturb you again. I'm seeing this video, again-and-again :). In your bike like in mine the outer shell from the shift cable from the front derrailleur doesn't go up to the front derrailleur. Why? Any disadvantage?
Thanks ever so much ! So clear and detailed that even I was able to install the derailleur. And that really tells something about the quality ofthe video!
Thanks for this. My new GRX 800 bike started hitting my crank arm and I just turned the stabilizer bolt. Haven't upgraded in 4 years and these new derailleur with 2 extra screws and lines confused the shit out of me before I watched.
Love your instructional videos - Thank You. I was wondering if you fancied a bit of a challenge: How about a video on matching a new headset for a Ridley Frameset. I have a Ridley X Ride (Cantilever) Frameset, luckily I managed to get a complete original headset kit for it but it would be nice to know if these Framesets can be matched with Hope, Cane Creek etc and how to find the right headset. Many Thanks.
Great vid especially the tips about cable end to protect shifter and alignment of the white lines when shifter was intrim not shifted down 👌 Big help from sunny Wales UK
The South Yorkshire accent helps this tricksome front mech tutorial. I’m more 1990s Shimano than Shadow MTB style for road tech. It’s isn’t as easy as this makes it sound
Thanks again for a very informative tutorial. I wonder if a barrel adjuster is even called for anymore? It looks like the derailleur is much more user friendly when it comes to adjustments. The 2mm hex wrench is light years ahead of those Japanese spec screw heads.
Another super well explained installation. I always consult your videos as a first stop on any need. On my Émonda ALR the derailleur is just too far away for the seat-tube (or v.v.) for the protection plate to make any sense there, so I didn´t put it on. Any similar experience on other frames?
Today one side of the quick link in my chain broke and it ripped off the plastic piece that is on the inside of the metal cage that pushes on the chain to change gear. I Didn't know where the part came from until I saw this video, thanks. Hopefully I can just replace that little plastic part.
I have a Giant TCR and when installing the front derailleur the stabilizer bolt doesn't come anywhere close to the frame to push against. Is that going to be an issue?
@@FreeToCycle thanks, thats great when you are changing the frame. Then you need a new derailleur because spare parts are not available. Finally i think its not a clever solution. I stay with the r6800.
Older video but hopefully someone here still checks comments and helps me out a bit. I have this exact front derailleur. My setup has 52-36 chainrings at the front and an 11-28 cassete at the back. My chain seems to rub on this derailleur on both 52-11 AND 36-28 gearing which really baffles me. I can't unscrew the L limit far enough to eliminate the 36-28 rub nor can I adjust the H limit screw far enough for it to eliminate the chainrub in 52-11 gearing. Bike seems to shift just fine through the gears so it doesn't seem like a cable tension issue to me (also bike is new so I doubt that'd be the problem). Position of the front derailleur maybe? Some other screw I've missed that needs thightening or loosening?
The cable tension adjustment bolt, does this mean I don’t need an inline barrel adjuster for the front mech. Fitting rear and front mech so studying closely. Great tutorial 👍
my problem is that when i have the drivetrain in the smallest chain ring (34t), and the rear cassette in the biggest cog (32t), I get chain rub on the inside of the front derailleur (closest to the frame). I let the L limit screw all the way out, so it applies NO pressure on the front derailleur at all, and it still rubs
@@scottkarwowski1144 So the new front hangers have the little bumpers, and it rubs on that. Essentially what I said was "well I guess I am just being a perfectionist and it will never be perfect" and settled for "a little bit of rub when in big cog front-small cog back" with "a little bit of rub when in small cog front-big cog back"
@@PopkosCZ I did the best I could, I made sure the cables wasnt too tight (so the derailleur can relax) and then I just waited for the little plastic bumpers on the derailleur to wear and not its fine. haha
@@skyscraper5910 haha, nice.. I´m running the 11-32 on Sora R3000 and when I´m on the 32t and 34 on the drivetrain than its not silent.. but usualy when I´m at those gears I dont hear any chain rubbing over my hard breathing:D :D
After reading the comments, I must be missing something. I switched from a 50x34 chainring to a 53X39 chainring and now I can't get my R8000 installed properly. The crank keeps hitting the derailleur cage when in the big ring. My bike shop has a 3 week wait, so it looks like I have 2 weeks to figure out what I'm doing wrong. I don't really understand the step where you say to push the tail of the cage inwards .5mm with your thumb.
When I pull the cable the upper arm that is attached to the cable moves freely and doesn't engate the plate arm until the very end of the travel. What gives?
I do everything step by step and for me result i perfect on R8000, except when front is smallest chainring and in rear last 2 smallest sprocket, my chain touch front derailleur is this normal? I read in some forum this problem on Di2 but my is mechanical. Thanks.
I made a guide for this derailleur and not sure why mine never came with a guide as ive heard the 105 has one. A more engineered derailleur over its predecessor but the feel and efficiency of the new model is night and day.
This is one of the best and most complete videos to set this up that I’ve seen. Thank you so much for this, my setup is now perfect.
Seriously, the best one. None of the others helped me. Thanks!

Thank you for the complete guide. Perfectly understandable and helpful.
Life-saver for the non technical. Have just successfully replaced my 6800 with an 8000..Many thanks ...
Finally, my chain is not rubbing on my front derailleur. It was driving me nuts, thank you.
You rock..my bike shop could not do mine so I used your video and mine came out perfect. Thank you
Superb! I've been struggling with my FD for days! This has sorted me now. Cycling is getting far to complicated!
A great explanation on how to adjust 👍🏼

Great video. I worried when I saw it was 17 mins, but it was the perfect pace and detail.
Great video! I wish more people are as good as you are at this job!
Couldn't have managed without this, perfect tutorial, you have a great style, thorough and unhurried. Many thanks for your time.
A true mechanical explanation. Thanks for that and your time
Amazing! I’ve been struggling on my fd. Now its shifting fast and smooth 👌🏼
Simply excellent.. all the very details addressed! Big Fan of these videos! Presse go on!
*please ...this damned autocorrection..
Pleased I watched this. Thought I knew how to fit a front mech but this is a lot more complicated! Well worth a view.
best - (clearest, most complete) I've seen Cheers
definitly the best explanation ,bravo !!!
Best video out there, ez setup and works like a dream 😜

Great video!
Fantastic video. Thank you.
The barrel adjuster bolt seems like it's gonna fall off, what do you put there or do to make sure it won't fall off and lose it during your ride?
I thought that when making adjustments to the Low or Upper settings, the (Left) shift lever needs to be in the (x) Trim position.... No?
I have a Giant TCR and when installing the front derailleur the stabilizer bolt doesn't come anywhere close to the frame to push against. Is that going to be an issue?
love your video, but how the metal sticker will be mounted on the frame. Is it glue?
It’s self adhesive on the back!

You don’t need an inline barrel adjuster for the front or rear derailleurs!
Awesome! I never used them with 6700, but found it was impossible to get enough tension on the 6800 FD cable without one.
Brilliant bro!
why cant shimano explain it like this! Great video thanks!

Put some substance to the oddly worded shop manual from Shimano. Appreciate the video!
Handy, thanks ✅

You will never stop it rubbing in that position as the chain is running at an angle it’s not designed too.

Glenny it's funny some derailleurs have the guide stuck to the cage and some don't it can be totally random.
I see you got rid of the tuque haha.. Are you planning to do a Di2 version Ultegra R8050?
Dick, maybe a Di2 guide in the near future just need to get round to it.
Rather complicated! Combine the complications with the delightful Australian English dialect, the challenge is complete!
