- Building a shed, sounds like a fun project. But after seeing Jeff go through the details and breaking down the cost we think that you’ll agree that buying a shed is the better option.
Thanks for watching, Jon Хобби
6 years ago, I built a 16x19 shed by myself. I think it cost about $7K. It took me over a month. It was a great experience. I built the trusses on the floor once the walls were up.
Worth doing once maybe! 😝
Looks like a good product that used the better choice materials. Besides the time frame and move in ready are a value to
I’ve built a 2 sheds, mine and my brothers. We both built them together on weekends and didn’t charge each other for labor. Did either of us save money, maybe, maybe not. But we got quality time together and framing is fun once in a while after always working in the shop. To me that was worth it, though I totally understand just buying it too
Sounds like fun!
Your shed looks great. I don't have an opening large enough in my fence to have a pre-built shed put into my back yard. A shed made from pre-built components would be the way to go in that regard, and to have their crew assemble it, or do it myself would add another decision/cost point.
For their small food truck business, my neighbors put together a modest 5 X 8 resin based shed about seven years ago. By all accounts, it's held up quite well. Reasonably priced too.
Thanks! This particular company offers site built sheds too.
Buying was the way to go. I used a company called Sheds Unlimited in Morgantown, Pennsylvania to build the outer shell of my ranch house and a shed. They were both delivered as panels and assembled onsite. Site prep was gravel for the shed and concrete slab for the house. Four men took two days, and I had a finished shed and the exterior of my house was complete with siding, roof, doors, windows…everything. It was amazing to watch them work. I visited their facility before buying and saw that they are buying materials by the railcar load.
You made the right choice, now you can put your efforts into “customizing “ the interior.
Very cool! I just drove by their place a few weeks ago heading out to Lancaster. I also gave them a look online.
Best choice for sure and no mess to do and clean up . Love the ability to load it on site Great service
It was painless.
You made the right decision Jeff and it look amazing
Thanks, Jim!
Shed looks great you made the right choice .I spent 4 days putting together a shed i bought from costco
Thanks, Rob. I remember hearing about that shed 😝
I built mine specifically to save money and to learn, but I was in no rush. Site prepped and built it over the course of a few months. Building rafters is annoying lol had a few helping hands along the way. I did all the framing with a good ole fashioned hammer. lol 10x12 shed. I probably spent 3k total and labor was free. Depending on your situation, for sure I’d just buy it. lol
That’s a great learning experience!
Could I? Yes.
Would I? No.
You made the right choice, plus, it's "so cute, omg!".
My own he-shed.
When you’re running a business, it’s almost always better to buy vs build.
Exactly. I can spend that time in the shop generating income.
People don't realize that time is money. Add your time and your labor from start to finish, and the choice clear. Buy.
But if you were in my position back when I built my own shed, I was tight on money. I only built my own because I didn't have enough money to buy the size I needed. My wife and a couple of our kids helped. So, in some cases, building is the only way.
Great points! 🙌🏼
Depends on if you have more time than money
Very true. I spent the time I would’ve spent building the shed working in the shop.
I agree, you made the right choice. Cut down wait time and aggravation.
Aggravation is a given 😝
I have been thinking of adding a much smaller shed in my limited space. Looking at what is commercially available and what I can afford the quality is pretty awful. In this case it seems that building might be a better option just to get a decent end result
Yes, some of the sheds out there are junk.
The make vs. buy is a personal decision. Getting one from a local company in 6 days? That's worth it, especially with full delivery included.
They were great to deal with.
Good buy for sure. Especially if you consider lost productivity for your company if you knocked it out during the work week.
Exactly!
Agreed, buying a shed is cheaper than building one. BTW, I assume that you had to get approval from the town or city where you reside in order to install the shed on your property?
A shed this size requires a permit, yes.
I don't really have a lot of free time but I don't have a high salary so it's a toss up whether I could build it myself and break even.
Tough call!
Jeff - How did you find the company? They make beautiful garages. Thumbs up from Iowa.
Just from poking around on Google!
I would definitely buy. However, I'm already at my limit for outbuildings on my property so no more sheds for me.
Bill
You can slip another one in there, Bill. No one will know!
For myself or a friend, I would build it, and put that extra money towards Fondation or upgrades, but as a job for someone, probably not.
Good point!
Curious on how far a trip it was from build site to your place as a factor of when far is too far, delivery cost wise. So many variables into this choice but from the outside, I definitely see how your time and expertise was better spent in your craft than in doing it just because you know how.
They’re about 110 miles away in Pennsylvania.
Cheaper to build it yourself. If building is even a consideration, most people already have the tools. It's not that complicated. The problem for most people is time. Finding the time to do it in a timely manner.
I’d say typically you’d be better off working and generating income during the time you’d spend building the shed. You can probably make more doing whatever you do for a living unless you’re a very well-rounded carpenter.
@@TodaysCraftsmen If you make 6k in less than a week, building a shed probably never even crosses your mind. Most sane people would build the shed on their off days. Some people don't consider working every day of their life a good thing. Building something with your hands can be a good way to relieve stress and bring balance to your life so it's not all dollars and cents. Like I said, finding the time to do it is usually the biggest hurdle as life does on with other obligations.
For sure. But also we’re just talking about the $3k in labor. The material cost is fixed.
I've just bought a shed because it was cheaper than building it myself.
Nice! 👍🏼👍🏼
you don't have to paint!
A godsend!
Dude, that’s a steal. For $3000 delivered and not even breaking a sweat. Great deal and by the way, it looks awesome!!!!
He paid 6,300 for his shed not 3,000.
Correct minus the $3200 that he has stated for material . So basically $3000….
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Correct.
Yes, that was sort of the point I was trying to make in the video. The material is a fixed cost at $3200ish so can you build it for $3000 in labor vs spending that time generating $3000 in income.
Buy, sometimes your wallet is your best tool.
Yup! Spent the time in the shop generating income.
Nope. Smart decision
You know me. Smart.
