      New Horizons has actually been the worst game for that when it comes to decorating your house outside of maybe the first (even then the first seems better.) The game is just missing so many furniture sets from previous games, and lacks the ease of so many of the other games in getting the furniture you want.
      Why can't you re-colour furniture on demand like New Leaf? Why have they cut so many furniture sets? Why are the shops so incredibly small and so many are basically missing? And it takes so long to even get to style your island and house in this game. If you want more shops to be able to style (buy furniture for) your house you have to waste a bunch of bells and time/resources making town projects. And after that you need to work up a bunch of Nook Miles to fly to basically empty islands where the most you can do is get fruit (and again this game has less fruit than the previous... Somehow) and make a Tarantula Island.
      As someone who lives with someone who dropped hundreds of hours into City Folk, New Leaf, and over 500 on Happy Home Designer, this game definitely doesn't do a great job for people who mainly care for designing houses.

      A bit late but the problem with it is that the seasons still change. Its supposed to appeal to both faster paced players and to stylists by having a permanent season or day for as long as you want, like allowing a Halloween themed village being constantly in Halloween. No matter how much you'd want to do it, with the upkeep system, you'd have to limit playing for a holiday town to just the holiday. And I'd rather not play a game once a year if I like it.

    19:57 here’s an idea: instead of cutting fine art, just add a new traveling merchant who only sells legit fine art (no forgeries) but at a higher price than Redd’s shop (which would still sell art at a lower price but with a chance of it being forged). Those who can distinguish which ones are fake by looking at them (which is possible in new leaf, as the forgeries look noticeably different from the real ones) can shop at Redd’s to get a cheaper price, while those who can’t (or simply don’t want to) can pay a little more to guarantee an original. And there could also be another traveler you can sell the forgeries to (maybe they buy them for the canvas and paint over them with their own designs, or maybe they’re Redd’s supplier or even Redd himself but he’s in disguise), so if you wind up with a forgery, it’s not a total loss.

      a year late, but wanted to say that i actually love this concept and think it has some real teeth. the new merchant could have a rivalry with redd, who tries to convince you that the authentic merchant is a scammer. make them another species often depicted as being slippery and cunning, like a snake (a cobra art dealer would be amazing). the forgery buyer could be a forgery-focused art collector, something snooty-looking like a borzoi or afghan hound maybe? or something with a bit of chaotic energy, like a raccoon or tasmanian devil.

    Some constructive criticism:
    *TL;DR: Having everything instantly, is boring. Don't give ultimate control at the beginning of the game, and give us something to look forward too. You also can't rush through life and enjoy everything it has to offer. You need to slow down to be able to enjoy some things.*
    I agree with you on a few points
    •Botany section for the museum, and having special types of plants depending on season, month, time? Yes yeS YES NINTENDO *GET ON THAT*
    •Bring back the town dump and add a possum that collects trash and rewards you? Great idea.
    •Make it easier to time travel? Sure, but don't make it too much in the players face.
    •Give the player more stuff to do as mayor besides publics works projects? Yes please
    Other stuff like the seasonal areas? Yes, but with some tweaking.
    Make the seasonal areas not available year round, but only 1 open depending on the season. If its winter, make the jingle production area open. If its autumn, make the crow farm open, etc. It gives you something to look forward too and still keeps the aspect of how the game passes in real time. Each area would have their own seasonal related activities to do. The activities could range from different things that collectors, recliners, and stylists would like. Activities like catching [so and so bug/fish] thats only available during the season, help garden on the crow farm, build snowmen in the jingle area, help decorate, etc.
    Don't make it too easy to collect stuff whenever you want. If most stuff in the game came instantaneously, theres no fun in that. You'll run out of stuff to do way quicker. If the shops closing to be upgraded annoys you, time travel (granted, that they improve that aspect of the game and make it less tedious and annoying to do so). Or maybe make the wood pecker workers come in if you pay a large sum of money. Just don't let things come too easily.
    I wouldn't give the player the ability to design the layout of your town straight off. I like how they are doing it now, giving you four randomly generated towns to choose from. Ultimate control gets old. The aspect of not knowing what your gonna get adds some excitement to the game, you don't know who will be in your town, what your town's layout will look like. I like how they do it in New Horizons, not letting you change the layout at first and having you build around the town layout as it is, and letting you have more freedom to change some of the layout in the future (adding pathways, waterfalls, cliffs, etc.). You don't instantly have all the power, you have to earn it
    The reason the shops do this in AC is since thats how real life works. AC is designed to 'mimic' real life. Its a home away from home, it takes some elements of what we see in our everyday life, and makes it more peaceful. The reason theres a lot of waiting involved in AC is since thats what real life is like. Waiting. If we could have whatever we wanted instantaneously, life would get kinda boring. Theres nothing to look forward too, we've seen it and done it all already. When something new comes out, there needs to be a buildup of hype for us to get excited, and when we have what we were so excited for, we need to be able to savor it, enjoy it. Rushing through something takes joy out of it.
    Lets say you got pizza. If you scarf the whole pizza down in one bite and swallow immediately, that wouldn't be enjoying the pizza right? You just rushed through eating the pizza, and didn't stop to enjoy the taste of it, or eat it slice by slice, enjoying each slice for its different toppings
    EDIT: in hindsight after playing lots of new horizons, yeahhhhh the ability to terraform your island got weirdly overwhelming? Its hard to put into words but it just started to lean into that feeling of it almost being like you too much control. This is a guess, but I feel like thats why so many people decided they wanted to reset their islands after a few months of the game ‘s release. It just got too old and too fast. I guess there’s something to be said for pacing in how much options for activities a player may be presented with at any given time. The player needs to be presented with enough ideas to be motivated to play the game, but also not too much control to the point where it almost seems unpleasant to have to decide on what massive amount of work you will tackle first. But the activities still need to be shaken up mixed around for different seasons and months every now and then to keep them from going stale. If that makes sense? Also for the love of god release a game at launch thats already worth $60. Nintendo really released an unfinished game and said “we’ll finish it later”.

    • @ravenpaw0233
      @ravenpaw0233 4 года назад +28

      I do like your idea for tweaking the seasonal areas, but let’s say that you haven’t experienced the season? I think that the areas would be unlocked by experiencing the seasons in your town, not just right off the bat. I think that once you unlock say, the crow’s farm, you would be able to visit the farm in the spring and fall, not just fall. When you first visit the farm, you should get gifted a small plot of land for yourself and then be able to take care of your plants until winter arrives. When winter arrives you leave your garden to be taken care of by the crows, who would be finishing up harvesting their crops for the fall. When you come back in the spring, you’ll see that the crows are starting to plant their crops and that your garden is just how it was when you left it. It does kinda take away the entire “its always fall here” idea, but it kinda gives the area a bit more of a real life vibe. You would still be able to catch fall-exclusive bugs, but the crows would do something different depending on which season you’re in.

    While I feel like this has a lot of good ideas, it just doesn’t feel like animal crossing. As a “stylist“ I agree it’s nice to get a lot done in the time I get to sit down and play the game. It’s frustrating to have to manually take a good extra 2 or more minutes time traveling. But, I feel like waiting is part of the game. Life takes time and so does getting things done in Animal Crossing. The game motivates you to keep playing since you know that things will continue tomorrow. You play the game knowing your town is progressing over time. Imagine this: A long day after work. You’re tired, you remember your hybrids may have grown! Your public work project is finished! You open the game and prepare for tomorrow. The next day, another long day. You remember that, “oh yeah” it’s the fishing tourney today!” You’re motivated to play more.

    • @AstridCeleste96

      If you feel like waiting is part of the game, and you time travel, you're fighting for an empty point that clearly doesn't apply to you.
      I feel like it should be all or nothing personally, and either way I'm fine with it. I think I'd rather time traveling not exist, and if each seasonal zone existed, make it not have ALL the season's flowers/bugs/fish/etc. but rather have a good chunk, leaving the exceptionally rare to be discovered during the proper seasons in-town. But, if time traveling is going to exist via exploit of changing date/time, I don't want players who want to play when they can and avoid the punishing feeling of missing a few days have to rely on an exploit and feel "less" for it.

He asked for you to be able to create your character right off the bat, yup that's here too.

Like with Pillbugs, he mentions that while children find poking them to make them curl up fun, he finds it disgusting to see their little legs squirm about, or with Paper Butterflies, he mentions that, while they look nice, they're highly toxic, cocoons and youths included, and that birds have grown to avoid them ("This bird especially").

A frog and a bear are by their very natures going to care about some different things. So any given villager has two "personality" tables to draw from and the intersection makes a cranky wolf distinct from a cranky rhinoceros in the same way he's always been distinct from a normal wolf, but also, he has some new common ground with the normal wolf, and now everyone's whole dynamic is different from one relatively simple change.

    Like a lot of other people have said, I feel like giving the player that much control over the clock undermines precisely what makes Animal Crossing a uniquely enjoyable game. "Fun" isn't always about the player being in control or the player mastering the game world; some games are fun precisely because the world is outside of the player's control. This may sound like a strange comparison, but Animal Crossing resembles roguelikes in this regard. Losing can be fun; its entertaining to go fishing and then pull up a piece of garbage rather than a fish. You can't just optimize the game on day 1; instead cool piece of furniture your find or rare bug you catch is a memorable moment, moments that are spread out across months of playtime. The difference, of course, is that Animal Crossing is low stakes so none of the "losses" Animal Crossing doles out actually harm you in the game.
    You've got to chill out when you play Animal Crossing. It's not a game about winning; it's not a game about expediency. It's a game just about being in the world.

    I feel like you approach this with a lot of bias to the "collector" style of play at the start. Adding in a time skip feature while also having the seasonal islands, is just a way to speed up the game and make things easier to collect everything. That removes a bit of the point for a lot of the audience of animal crossing. I think a lot of people who play AC are somewhere in the middle of that grid. Most people who like to design their town, tend to also be a recliner and like to relax it. Most people who are recliners, want to collect everything or gradually do so etc. Having everything to do at once, is kinda takes away the feeling of not having to do anything, or a lot that is a part of animal crossing. I think the way you design the game, would make for a really good game, but not so much a really good animal crossing game. Though some of the other things you mention like, more personalities, more bugs, more fish and more things to collect would definitely make for a good addition. More of a back story for the main cast would definitely be good too, like the Able sisters story line.

    This is an old video but let’s talk about how Jello’s entire idea was about how we’re not getting rid of the clock, we’re just giving players the option to go faster. There are still wait times and obviously there’s room to make assumptions and discuss the specifics of the waits (hence the extra seasonal areas being non-playable UNTIL the in game season has been unlocked) but this just allows for all play styles! Making the clock manipulation more accessible is good because it allows players to move a little faster if they want, and allows for the reclining “time travel shouldn’t be allowed” people to keep doin their things. It seems like everyone missed that? There are universally agreeable unnecessary wait times that we can drop altogether but giving players the option to move with real time or speed things up is a great idea, how are you gonna tell someone how to play the game? Nintendo didn’t, they saw the direction players were taking the game and rolled with it, with all the new custom designs and terraforming and creative flow, Nintendo doesn’t care how you play so why not make it more available to play faster?

There is still plenty of work in it. Besides he already talked about how the clock manipulation would benefit those types of players as well.

    • @hat-desu
      @hat-desu 2 года назад +14

      I think something often misunderstood is that anti-TT people aren't choosing to go slower because they don't want to go faster, it's that they're purists about the game design philosophy itself. Including TT as an in-game accessible feature will implicitly eliminate the style of slower, daily gameplay that AC builds itself around, and a different argument can be made for whether that itself is inherently flawed or not.
      Jello makes a good point about people who don't have time to play at length daily, and a system that punishes them is bad for sure. However, while making it completely real-time-agnostic means you can play as much as you want, and then not at all, it also means the majority of players will always going to be going as fast as they can. A player that is out of things to do won't take the time to relax and wait for the real time clock to move if there's a button that says "skip to the next part" that the game invites you to press. That's why the design implicitly changes - to choose to wait around would actually be ignoring an aspect of gameplay. Even if it feels like they're "forcing" you to wait now, and more goal-oriented people take issue with that, I think that restrictive part of the design was and still is intentional.
      To a certain extent I do think the devs have the right to tell you how to play their game, and people absolutely have the right to disobey that anyway without it being called a design mistake. A designing angle I would really like to see is one that incentivizes and rewards non-TT gameplay (like giving them more to do in a day, reducing some unnecessary waiting, etc.), as even though it's probably a much tougher thing to accomplish, I think it would make for a much more interesting Animal Crossing than one that just deprecates it. It might as well just be a different game, without it.

      @ToaderTheToad 2 года назад +5

      The thing is... Number one, Time Travel was _never_ supposed to be an intended feature, and probably should never be, some things are left best as their original state, and not trying to bring it in to focus more.
      And second... Well, _this is Animal Crossing, for Pete's sake!_ The original GCN game was advertised as the "The game that's running every minute of every day, whether you're playing, or not." Removing that would basically destroy what little remains of the original intent of the games. It would remove what's cool about the games.
      Just _having_ it there, right in front of your face, _nearly every_ player will go "Hey, cool" and use it, never really getting to experience _what_ the game was intended to play like.
      The original Animal Crossing was intended to be just a relaxing game, not one that you're supposed to blow through and be done with it. I know different people have differing styles of play, but first and foremost, Animal Crossing is just intended to be a relaxing game, building up your town, just chilling with villagers.

      @@hat-desu I think I pretty much agree with everything you said, and as far as giving the reclining traditional players more things to do and having less wait time punishments is honestly the heart of it all, maybe the sleeping time travel dragon is something you can access in a menu and not someone just hanging out in your town so you only know about it if you’ve explored a lot of other options in game or you’ve read it somewhere online, that way you’ll use him if you want, and most likely won’t even find him if you don’t look for it. It could even just be a simpler way like having Tom Nook or Isabella in the menu (although the reason I liked winkle I because his concept is fun and whimsical) Just to make it a bit more palatable.

    But there's something so cozy about the 1:1 timeflow in these games. There's no stress involved, once you've done everything there is to do in a day, you turn the game off & play something else. Animal Crossing doesn't demand your attention, it invites you in to relax or mess around for as long as you want. It makes the game feel more down to Earth. Adding the seasonal areas would be awesome!! But it would seriously take away from the whole point of the game right off the bat. It would be like going into creative mode in Minecraft & giving yourself diamonds. You get to the end faster, but it takes the journey out of the game. You may as well just stay in creative mode if that's how you wanna play.
    And I'm 50/50 on the inventory space & menu management. It would be nice to have more space & save time in menus, but intentionally slowing everything down just fits the slow & easygoing atmosphere. If it's improved then awesome! If not then oh well.
    I couldn't agree more about the NPCs though, everyone's so watered down in the new ones. They're too nice & they're too shallow. I miss the villagers being mean & having to sit through Blathers talking about donations forever. It was fun to learn about them as a kid! lol
    Blathers, Sable, Phyllis, Resetti, K.K, Copper, & Booker all acted like people we've met in real life, so their exaggerated personalities made us chuckle. And they were all that more memorable for it. I can't say the same for most of the new characters. (with minor exceptions) Isabelle is alright, Harvey is fun, & Lief is ok.
    And 100% yes, make collecting the art better.
    The biggest thing I'm sad about in all the games after GameCube is the music. Don't get me wrong, the new music is wonderful & I love it! But the weirdness of the old soundtrack is filled with this feeling of nostalgia, even when you first hear it. The new music is more relaxing & pleasant but feels like all the new characters: safe.

Having a guaranteed way to get art pieces without making sure they're not just recreations would be SO much more convenient. I've never been able to finish the whole museum in any game just because I have terrible luck when it comes to finding art.
    Edit: All y'all saying it's not luck-based in New Leaf are forgetting that you still have to wait for new art to show up in Redd's tent. Duplicate real pieces can even show up after you've found one for the museum. So yes it's always been luck-based. Please stop.

    The other thing that's always bugged me is the lack of options for character interaction. A great example of this is the birthday parties. You show up in their comically tiny house (another thing I'd like to see change), and they have all of one guest besides you and they're just walking around whistling. There's nothing to do except show up, hand them their present, maybe talk to each of them one more time, and leave. It's kind of depressing. You should be able to play party games or something. Same with when you visit someone's house or they visit yours; there should be minigames and stuff. Villager has a ping-pong table? Make it so you can play ping-pong with them. They have one of those game consoles that double as working emulators? Make them the player-two AI, complete with reaction dialog when they win or lose. Even _Pocket Camp_ had those little cutscenes where you cook or make crafts together; maybe flesh that out into real minigames. Just enough to make the world and its characters feel more alive.

I would like to be able to invite them to your house whenever you want, play mini games with them, ask if they wanna go to the museum, go to an island etc I also would like them to have more interactions between them. This is an old comment but let’s talk about how Jello’s entire idea was about how we’re not getting rid of the clock, we’re just giving players the option to go faster.

    While these ideas are fun, I think you're missing some of the appeal to animal crossing in the idea of "freezing" time. Time progression adds to the feel of the gameplay, time travelling isn't _meant_ to be utilised in the game, hence why it's annoying to do so. I think being kept to the limit of time acts as an incentive to keep playing the game as the seasons change. Being able to go to areas for every season takes away that feeling. Just being able to get every seasonal bug and fish at any time means that "completion" would be over way too quickly and I think that would take away from the experience.

    • @dylanmontz9789
      @dylanmontz9789 4 года назад +127

      Agreed! I'm definitely on the completionist corner of the triangle, but much of his nuances is what makes Animal Crossing what it is. If I wanted a game that let me jump around to different days, I'd play Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley. Animal Crossing is unique because of its time based events. It's a game that's not meant to take up a lot of your day, but meant to be played over the course of a week. I average 15-30 minutes playing each day, and then i jump to another game. I'll be buying the game digital this time around because of that. I want this game to hold me out for a year or more, because then i get to continue to experience something new along the road. It's why games have things like DLC, seasonal events, and updates. Player engagement lasts for a longer period of real time and players feel more satisfied overall.
      Much of why i didn't like AC when i first played was because I was too focused on the completionist aspect of it. I wanted nothing more than to fill the museum, but when i learned i had to wait nearly a year just for the chance of completing the museum, i got frustrated. I'd pull out my game cartridge, complete all my dailies, and then i'd try and stretch out any amount of fun i could from the game. It grew frustrating and tiresome, because the only way i was having fun was playing for multiple days at a time. But once i changed my goal and my outlook on AC, i realized how relaxing the game was, the amount of dialogue characters had, and overall how excited i would get to play a little each day.
      Animal Crossing is the Tamagotchi of the video game world. You give it care every single day, but it's not something you'll spend all day on.

    Ok, let's break down those three pillars of Animal Crossing you mentioned, comparing Crossroads to New Horizons.
    Crossroads:
    Collector: Tons of love for this pillar. You could pretty much collect everything in one real week, if not a day. Tons of new stuff to collect and ways to collect it that haven't been seen in Animal Crossing before.
    Stylist: The ability to get plants and furniture more easily from Autumn and Winter land respectively makes decorating more easy then before. Freezing your town in one season could lead to some cool themed towns, too. But that's...kind of it.
    Recliner: Umm...I don't think this pillar even made it into Crossroads. I mean, theoretically you can relax in any Animal Crossing game, and this is no exception, but nothing was really added or talked about that benefits this pillar. I suppose the simplification of many aspects of the game makes the game as a whole more relaxing, but that applies to all three aspects of the game and New Horizons does it, too.
    New Horizons:
    Collector: You collect nearly everything in the game, pretty much. New tools, new buildings and shops, etc., in fact because you only start with a few villagers you technically collect them, too. The whole game is now a collectathon of sorts.
    Stylist: Nintendo shifted this into maximum overdrive for this game. Being able to meticulously design every aspect of your island in true sandbox fashion is a bold move for the series, but it means anyone can get their dream town, without the need to hunt for a good one at the start or lay down patterns everywhere. The ability to put furniture outside also massively increases your options. Plus, have you *seen* the new interior design?
    Recliner: Now that the game is a total sandbox by the end, you can make your dream vacation island! Put down reclining chairs and lanterns and such to make the perfect beach getaway, or make a beautiful lake resort, it's up to you. Since the game essentially starts at zero, it's up to you to figure out just how deserted the island is, so if you're the lonely type you can make a whole residential district, or you can keep it to a quiet little shack or two near the waves.
    Tell me if I missed anything. Assuming I didn't, the imbalance here is...less than exciting.

    I definitely agree that there is a lot of work that could be done to improve the quality of life for these games, but I'm not sure if I agree with the approach of giving the player so much control over time. The whole point of animal crossing is that it's a very laid-back, peaceful game that is about the simple joys of day to day life. The fact that you're supposed to just let time pass naturally instead of getting complete control over every little thing is part of it's charm. I do think that a lot of the things you suggested sound nice though, especially a lot of the mechanical improvements that frankly should have been implemented by now. I also wish that there was more variety in villager personalities and more things that you could do with them. Maybe you could participate in festivals and contests with them or something.

      Yeah the only problem with that is the game already has the ability to bypass this mechanic, it's just annoying as hell to do. Additionally, you can't really make the excuse that they want people to do other tasks, because literally everything takes a million years to do in animal crossing. I played new leaf for the first time with no previous knowledge of animal crossing and the number one problem I had with it was the difficulty wasn't in mechanics or anything, it was just a bunch of loading screens that delayed me from playing the game I payed 60$ for. The game disguises itself as a mobile game that you have to pay full price for. ADDITIONALLY, there is no reason to have time limits on anything in terms of the business side either. With mobile games, they are generally either free or less than 5$, so their income relies on the player coming back and spending money on new content. BUT WITH ANIMAL CROSSING, from what I know, there is no new content, no DLC, literally no reason to keep players playing. You can't even argue it's for marketing because after the game is cleared, its described as a whole experience from the people who played through it, and the way I saw the game when I was done with it was "Wow. I payed 60$ for a 3D version of stardew valley that has the game design of a scratch project and literally nothing fun to do other than change outfits. I should've just played a mobile game because atleast a mobile game is FREE and adds new content consistently rather than waiting for 8 YEARS to add any new content to the franchise." I had this problem with the game WITHOUT the context of the other games having all of the same collectibles as the predecessors. So, if a game really wants me to play it for only a certain amount of time a day, IT should RESTRICT IT, not make it hard to access, and make atleast a different option when you start the game to set the difficulty to "daily" or "timeskip", or something along those lines.

    Based on Did you know gaming's video, Animal Crossing was made to defeat isolation or times away from home. The game is meant to be slow paced where even just a few minutes in the day allows the player to be excited for the next one. It's like filling a hole in your heart if you ever get homesick irl. The problem with your "revisions" is that your game is no longer Animal Crossing, but a Stardew/Story of Seasons sequel. Animal Crossing helps the lonely, it helps the sick, and it helps the mentally sick. While yours is meant for speedrunners/completionists. While you can sort of "complete" Animal Crossing, its more about the slow pace and growing a family inside a game, relaxing before bed as you grow sleepy with the villagers. Or waking up to faces excited to see you again. Unfortunately you were just off the mark by a lot, but I do enjoy your effort. Perhaps you could make your version a real game one day

    I can't help but feel like adding time travel and the convenience of all four seasons at your fingertips would both devalue seasonal play and it's unique features, and also cut Animal Crossing down to a collectathon with a weird amount of villagers and furniture but not very much to do.
    Yes, it can be annoying to have to wait for a specific irl season or time to catch bugs, but that's the restriction that keeps Animal Crossing alive. Mobile games - as horrible as they may be - have captured this perfectly. You literally cannot complete a no-money paid run of a freemium game in a day. Or even a week. Animal Crossing forces you to wait a day or a season so you can't speedrun through all of it's content. It asks you to take it slow and enjoy each day as a unique blessing, rather than allowing you to collect every single bug and fossil in a single day and exhaust all of the content AC has to offer. It's about the journey, not the destination. Your destination with collecting all the bugs for the museum is to have all the bugs. What then? Are you going to go and look at all your bugs? Or are you going to realise that catching bugs is useless aside from getting more cash?
    Animal Crossing isn't a game that should cater to making things easier for you. Animal Crossing is a game that makes problems for you to work through, but doesn't force you to complete them. You're free to leave your town to grow weeds and become a dump, or live in a cardboard box with a candle atop and never pay off your mortgage. The satisfaction comes from the daily progress. The daily routine of collecting new fossils and chatting with your friends. If you start seeing these as daily chores rather than a chillout experience that literally goes at the same pace as your life, you should probably stop playing. I agree with expanding the museum, restructuring the painting acquisition and adding some more character to the characters, but not giving the player powers of time travel, all four seasons, instant building and basically any other godlike powers. If we have all four seasons that we can just walk to, and we don't need to wait for buildings, what's the point of time travel in the first place? The only purpose it could serve is events, and they would feel hollow and worthless because you didn't need to wait for them. They're just there to be activated whenever you want.

    • @keerya4179

      I don't think TT would be great, but the seasons islands and the time dragon just to stop time (only affecting villagers and state of toon and house, not the actual day of year) would be fine.
      But like, it should be features to unlock, so only available to players that really want them.
      Because as much as I love the idea of a game you play a bit every day and take it slow, I also know that if my job tell me "the deadline is soon but we're not anywhere near finished so it's crunch time" well I'll shut up and have no life for a while.
      If a game demand your time but you don't have as much as it ask for, it's not fun. It's frustrating, depressing and sad. Which are not the emotions I want a game to make me feel.

    • @Dracina
      @Dracina 4 года назад +13

      I feel like bringing up the no-money-paid mobile game runs undermines your point. The reason those freemium games are free is to annoy you into paying to speed them up. Here, you are paying 60 dollars. You already paid your fee. You should be able to speed things up if you want.

    • @ajdude9
      @ajdude9 4 года назад +23

      @@Dracina While that is true, the pacing of Animal Crossing is it's replacement for how other games may pace themselves out. Certain games have difficulty spikes, like putting a tough boss battle that'll keep you occupied. Other games have depleting resources, such as Stardew Valley and it's stamina system. Some games might have side-quests or fetch quests to slow down the pacing. Roguelike games like Enter the Gungeon mix RNG and skill as you need to get the right items for a run, and learn how to play well to progress.
      Animal Crossing lacks pretty much all of these, the only thing holding you back is how much time you're willing to spend on collecting the bugs, fish and fossils as well as gathering funds to pay off your mortgages. Thus, it uses this system of a time requirement to it's advantage. You can spend as much time as you want trying to catch all the bugs, but you've got to wait until the next day for things to change and progress. You can't blitz through Animal Crossing's main gameplay as a speedrunner might other games (Disregarding AC speedruns focused on mortgage). Everything takes time, and that's the "difficulty" of it. Give players control over this element of time, and it's like giving players a special weapon that kills a boss in one hit, or a button to just solve the puzzle immediately and move on to the next puzzle.

    let me fix this video in my opinion lol
    - *keep the clock.* the best part of animal crossing is getting gratification when you finally complete something after working towards it. i think they made it so tedious to time travel because it isn't how animal crossing SHOULD be played, but i'm not saying you're an awful person if you time travel. you COULD do it, but it's not the point. instant gratification would ruin the main 1:1 aspect of the game that so many people enjoy. the punishment and guilt trip for neglecting your game tbh should be still like past games. it's intimate, your villagers are living in your town. if they were real people, of course people would be pissed at you for leaving for 4 months and never coming back.
    - *seasonal locations only after you've experienced the season on the main part of your town/island.* each season in animal crossing offers something completely new, and having access to everything at the start would ruin the feel of it being.. well, a life simulator. in real life, you don't experience all seasons at once. once a season passes, you miss it, happy it's gone, etc. you can't just "go back whenever you want."
    - *KEEP paywalls, but add more upgrading tasks.* again, it's a life simulator. you don't get things for free. running a town as a mayor is expensive, you have to pay for essentially everything. I do agree with "quests" for upgrading some stuff, like the example with leif wanting to upgrade in collaboration with another farm, but the farm needs assistance first is a great idea!
    - *keep trash, add underwater furniture, but keep fish as shadows.* no. no. no. the best feeling is catching 5903502 sea bass, then finally getting a coelacanth or a tuna. trash is so unimportant but it replicates real life. there's trash in rivers/oceans. personally, i like how weeds appear, trash should also appear on the surface on the water once you first start or leave for a long period of time. this i believe shows more growth or backpedalling in a town/island. underwater furniture is a good incentive, though.
    - *yes to more museum exhibits, no to removing art and diving.* just because you don't like it, doesn't mean others do. i loved redd's guessing game and diving. but a botany collection and a gyroid collection would give me more incentive to practice flower breeding and not getting rid of gyroids.
    - *no to 100% being able to control your town/island.* self explanatory... randomness in villagers is apart of the game. picking your favorites limits villagers you've never met before you could potentially have a bond with simply because you stuck with villages you already knew.
    the only things i 100% agree with is villager dialogue and lack of intricacy. villagers that request certain things ( i.e lazy villagers --> hammock example ), they should donate a substantial amount of bells compared to other villagers simply because it's something they asked for.

      Also in addition to your point about villagers, firstly in real life sometimes your friends wont always be there therefore you have to make new friends, this is what NH is trying to present. Secondly , in this video he says we should be able to pick villagers but what about players who are new and never had favourite villagers. Finally, there's something so satisfying about seeing my favourite villager in the campsite one day.

    I feel like manually advancing time really changes animal crossing at a fundamental level. I'm fine with the option being there, but it was always an exploit rather than a feature. To let the player control the time like in harvest moon or stardew, animal crossing completely loses the kind of pacing it's going for. It's not really meant to be a "end the day when you accomplish your tasks, move to next day" sort of game. It's always been more of that mobile game style, check in for an hour, tweak some things, and then get excited for what's unlocked tomorrow.
