Voices for Gaza: Australian Civil Society's Stand Against Gaza Violence - Rawan Arraf at the UN

  • In her address at the 2024 Conference of CSOs working on the Question on Palestine organized by the UN Palestinian Rights Committee (3 April 2024), Rawan Arraf highlighted the robust response from Australian civil society to the severe military assault on Gaza. She noted that the response was "multifaceted and widespread," driven by a strong public demand for a permanent ceasefire. This was evident in the large anti-war protests, described as "the largest anti-war movement in Australia since the war against Iraq." Arraf emphasized the immediate call from over 100 organizations for a ceasefire, which contrasted sharply with the Australian Parliament's silence on Israel's attacks, which were "manifestly in violation of international law."
Arraf also detailed the significant challenges faced by civil society, including "anti-Palestinian racism" and attempts by right-wing groups to derail focus from the violence in Gaza. Despite this, there was strong support for Palestinians arriving from Gaza, with local communities and professional groups organizing various forms of support and advocacy. She criticized the Australian government's delayed and insufficient response to the ICJ's order on Gaza, calling for more decisive actions, including an arms embargo and diplomatic sanctions against Israel.

Rawan, assalaamu aleikum. Thank you for being there and raising awareness of the horrific genocide being committed in Gaza from an Australian concerned perspective. But to me (I’m Irish.. proud to be so, also Australian and proud to be so) there’s a massive “white elephant” that perhaps you overlook. E.g. Israel is a satellite based strategic military ally of the US and they are connected “at the hip” as you well know. What do you think Australia is? From an international perspective It used to be the UK predominantly, but of more recent years the US and the whole Five Eyes collective etc that when they say Jump, our wonderful leaders say…how high? They are all working hand in hand with each other. I mean for Christ’s sake, you have a new Labour Government in the UK that purports to make great changes for the working class, and a new perspective on the international front etc. And then you the photo of the new foreign affairs minister David Lammy with a beautiful smile shaking hands with Netanyahu. All working hand in hand… happy days. Rowan, I pray and I cry for the people of Gaza, but somehow I have faith they will rise.

The BBC article on the death of a disabled man - whose house was raided-whose parents tried to tell the soldiers he had Downe Syndrome - then the IDF put their dog onto him which attacked him and terrified him - and who was then taken and locked alone in a room while the family were forced to leave the house - and a week later came back to find him there dead where he had bled to death - this story needs to be told to the world. This is depravity and evil. It must not be tolerated.

She's lucky to have free speech in Australia. Though she's criticising Australia. Would she free, if she was in a Muslim country, to criticise the regime in place.
If she isn't happy with Australia's government, what is she doing there??.
Why is she not in Gaza helping there. Instead of making hypocritical speech, sitting comfortably in cosy environment, pretending she's concerned.
She's just using n abusing the whole issue to portray herself in the media, getting attention, to better or attract attention to herself.
    HYPOCRITES.

So you you think anyone that does not agree with their governments policies should go to another country... hmmm right🤡 I hope you never disagree with our government, other wise you may have to go elsewhere as well.. unless you are aboriginal ofcourse. Also, maybe she is not Palestinian, thats why shes not going to palestine.. just a guess 🤡Maybe she is a good decent human being and doing her best to expose the eu1l genocide that is being commited to the palestininas by Israhell.

@robdass137, Wow, what incredible & ignorant projection!
Whether she'd have freedom to criticise a Muslim country's regime, ... is irrelevant to the topic.
She's doing exactly what Australia's democractic citizenry do if they disagree with governmental policies! You seem to imply they should leave their country rather than work to address, improve & resolve differences?
As for rhetorically asking why she's not in Gaza helping .... again you're showing your ignorance of Israel's total lockdown of the Strip, preventing entry of any international journalists or independent observers.
Finally, if you actually listened to the content of her speech, rather than simply accusing her of 'using n abusing the issue'( ?), being hypocritical & attention seeking .... you might realize she's drawing attention to the issue rather than herself.

    • @robdass137
      @robdass137 Месяц назад +1

@@ilanafitzgerald9000. As uve rightly pointed out, she's lucky to have the freedom to criticise. As fr getting through to Gaza, aid workers are accessing the region.
How is it irrelevant, sitting comfortably in Australia n criticising the Australian government over Gaza, n not having the same freedom to criticise Muslim regime, if she was in a Muslim country.
Who is she to allow herself to criticise a country where, like it or not, she's an immigrant, enjoying the liberty n freedom as an equal Australia citizen, n yet expecting this country to follow her say, or the Islamic dicta.
Guess she should be grateful to Australia harbouring her n may be her entire family, living a peaceful life there.
Would an immigrant of any other faith, other thn a Muslim, enjoy the same rights n freedom as a Muslim, in an Islamic country.
Even as a native Muslim, in a Muslim country, she won't be allowed to criticise the regime in place. She would be put down. We have many examples of such atrocities. Iran is a prime example.
Furthermore, as a woman, she should be doubly grateful she can voice her feelings, without fear of any retribution from either the Australian government or citizen of Australia.
Her n her organisation should abstain themselves from interfering in the domestic n international policies of the Australian government.
Gaza isn't a direct concern of the Australian government, yet the government is doing whatever is right by the Palestinians people, within international law n to the right measures.
