Very rarely you come across a RUclipsr that the first thing that comes to your mind is w0w this guy actually looks like a nice guy in real life!
I felt that when he said "when you first start leatherwork your gonna suck anyways"
As someone who has been watching those "top tools for beginners" but is also not super in the green budget wise, I want to thank you for this video! My "studio" is also by bedroom right now lol
Its bn 3 yrs, how did yur leather working go? Im in the same boat now.
I appreciate someone who very clearly knows what they’re doing, telling you that you can do something with cheap equipment.
I've scoured hundreds of videos on beginner leather work tools this is by far the best one.
Cheap, effective and will get you started right away. Like and subscribe this guy! I will definitely be returning to learn more about leather working. 👍
Awesome, just started leather working in the past couple of months and this is exactly the kind of video on tools I've been looking for. Thank you!
awesome! Im glad i could help!
Probably the best video I’ve found like this.
Thanks for thinking of us poors people !
Check your local dollar store type place for cheap cutting boards and mats. You can try a TJ Max or Tuesday Morning too if you have one of those nearby.
I originally found your channel from your Red Wing boot reviews. Recently, I've been watching all of your beginner leather crafting videos, and they have been great at inspiring me to get into leather working as a hobby. I want to make a sheath for an axe I received, and you've shown me how easy, and inexpensive it can be to get into leather working. Thanks!
I truly love how you talk abt liking/subscribing in your vids it’s so refreshing. It’s like tipping your barista, but everytime someone fake enthusiasm interrupts themselves to say “SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON!” (Who is smashing we all have touch screens??) It kindof makes my head want to explode 😅
RUclips Corp housekeeping. Thanks for keeping it real.
Thank you for still making these kinds of videos too~
I love Harbor Freight but never spotted those -Thanks for the fast efficient video- you got lots across in little time.
Thanks Man, you stole my statement when you said, '..i was super poor when i was beginning...' I am beginning and located in Africa so i truly am working my head and finances up, to obtain some of these tools. I am truly on my teething stages but am determined....Another of your statement which caught my attention though i have perfectly understood it, is; '..cause you are gonna suck anyway...' lol....
Ha ha I’m glad you can relate!
the best way to stay bad at something is to buy fancy tools from the get go.

I just found this guy and he seems so wholesome, and just wants to help people get into the trade. Thanks man
Thanks so much! I'm just getting interested in leather making from all the videos, so I'm glad to see budget-friendly supplies that I can try my hand at!
Again, like your saddle stitch video, This is fantastic! Awesome beginner video and it gives me confidence to give this a go one day!
Dude! I just bought all this on my own before watching this video. I got a lot of flack from FB leather groups online being snobs about my cheap beginner tools. I’m a beginner though! I don’t need expensive tools yet. Good to see that I’m on track for a beginner. I was feeling like an idiot. Nope, they’re just being snotty!
Artist use the tools they use. More than half the time an artist has a tool that they have no idea where they got it and it's like a godsend!
Nicely done, thanks for the video. Just starting with some leather work and looking forward to it.
Awesome video man! Thank you!!
Great beginner friendly video, thank you!
Great vid for those starting out. Thank you for spreading the knowledge.
You’re welcome!
Your videos got me into leatherwork :) I also just went to my local hardware & ebay ti get cheaper tools to start. Think heaps of people will find this helpful & make starting less intimidating
This was very helpful, thanks!
I highly recommend contact cement for multi layered projects, like a wallet or a knife sheath for example. I tried using a lot of tools, wasting a lot of money on it, just to get all the holes to line up through the layers.
The easiest solution was to cement the layers together, then punch the holes through all the layers at once.
Edit: this is only necessary if you don't have/use templates, and you plan to saddle stitch without a stitching pony.
I use a Lepage water based contact cement and it works great. You can also use thin double sided sticky tape for when you just want two layers to hold together long enough to do the stitching.
Thanks...been looking for advice on beginner tools.
Ah, good ol' Hazard Fart. Got you covered from leather working to auto mechanics, and it's even mostly safe.
You're golden! Thank you. ❤️🙏🏻
This was a really good video now I am having so much fun
Thanks for this helpful video, since I’m contemplating basic tools to purchase for my new hobby
Loving the channel, I’m learning so much but this is fabulous
Thanks!
Honestly, i made most of my tools by myself. Punches, dies, awls, leathervise, hammer etc.
As a wood and metalworker i habe a lot of fun with that. And the result ist at last 100 Times better than amazon.
Thats a cheap start on a hobby just incase you don't like it. Good explanation of the tools.
Hey man good video! I went to hobby lobby trying to think of what I needed to get started and ended up putting everything back because I didnt know if I really needed this or that...plus harbor freight is a cheaper alternative to hobby lobby! Really useful video thanks man!
Thank you so much this was very helpful
As someone who's looking into getting into leather working, this excellent info as I don't want to drop a ton of money to start...
Glad it helped!
Brilliant, nice tips. Thanks :-)
Very informative and down to earth video. subscribed :) Thanks!
Thank you!
Hobby Lobby is also a good place to get beginner tools and even leather!
This was super useful for me
So helpful!
awesome video! i am probably the odd person who likes the leather working vids even mor than the 'shoe cut in half' stuff. i'm going to try to buy some of this today!
Thanks for the tips
Ha! Love the shout out to Snow! Go Badgers!
Good list, thanks
Everybody should have a leather hole punch for belts or watch bands etc. Basic homeowner tool!
Thanks for the video👍👍👍
Thanks dude I appreciate it
I appreciate this so much ☺️thank you...I got me a Arbor press from Harbor Freight
I use my arbor press every single day! they are so handy!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video.
Thank you
Thanks for your help Ross Anvil from Australia
Amazing.
Great video
Man, I love the ol' Hazard Fraught!
Thanks bro!
I used to use that same Sheffield blue box cutter utility knife you have, used it for the longest time, still have it too in my a drawer with my pocket knives and such .
thank you
Just bought a few tools to make some kilties for some boots I have - they're not common in the UK, but i need something to adjust the fit of the boot.
Thanks for videos bro
thanks man
Just got a rose anvil wallet after for a rose anvil video and I loved it
I am glad you did! Thanks.
I think that a sewing awl could be used for decorative stitches. But for vital stitches I think you should stick to saddle or cross stitch. They are far more durable.
thanks
Thank you for the tutorial. I was wondering which stitch punch would make for a common length stitch: 3, 4, 5 mm? When I clicked the link to Amazon, I needed to make a choice. Thanks again for taking the time to make the video.
thanks your shop
This need appreciation
A square or two helps alot as well
Local Harbor Freight? lol. Right, Google says there are 3 here in Maine (never seen one, myself). Not making that drive anytime soon, it's not a small state with straight roads.
edit: And as we like to say, "You can't get there from here".
"Or steal your mom's" haha I love it
I still don’t know if she knows actually ha ha
im gonna go try to find this stuff here in europe as i dont like Chef Pesos.. ill add the budget later. thanks for this list!!
0:58 you first wallet is a great and beautiful
lovely video, thank you! would love to see someone in the leather-craft field purchase one or 2 of those amazon "beginner sets" and review the quality of the tools. as a wood worker I know a lot of the chisels they sell in sets like that are shit, but i don't know anything about the quality of theleathtr tools like edge bevelers, stitch groovers, and the like.
You're in Utah. Im North of Ogden. Just started in leather work and lovin it. Harbor freight would be a great place to start. Wish i would have thought that before i blew a bunch of money at Tandy. Maybe i coild stop by some time and get some tips?
Get a small cheap orange deadblow hammer from harbor freight and it works wonders to prevent double stamping on your tooling dyes
helpful!! for the algo
thank you very much really you are a gentleman and nice college, please keep touch but I liked footwear for women
My workshop is also in my bedroom and my work bench is an old school desk I found at a thrift store. I got a lot of my tools at Harbor Freight. I have the rotary hole punch and scratch awl, but since I work at an upholstery supply store I was able to replace them both with C.S. Osborne tools at a very good price. I also have the steel ruler and I want the hole punches and the hammer. I the speedy sticker didn’t last me long, the needle broke. For cutting I use a Harbor Freight utility knife for larger cuts and the .50 cent knives for smaller cuts and for skiving. I even got a diver/compass for scratching stitching lines, but I didn’t think of using it to mark holes. I’d also like to add to your list getting a framing square.
Ya a square is a good idea. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that
Rose Anvil drywall square is 47 inches long. Would come in handy once I’m confident enough to buy a whole hide.
@@RoseAnvil When you start using more straight edges and squares, I recommend picking up a roll of grip tape. Use it on the back of the metal straight edges to keep them from slipping across the hide as you're cutting
Shout out to Snow College! It's not everyday you hear that name dropped on youtube.
cheap digital calipers. use all the time for measuring spacing for rivet holes n scratching. dont know how id do good leatherwork without it. n rivet setting punch
can you do a video on what you may need for leather boots and how much you should condition them?
I have video that talks about breaking in and conditioning boots. I believe there is some stuff in there that talks about how often you should condition. If you end up still wanting a video on that then let me know.
ruclips.net/video/KCmLx51XKVw/видео.html
If you need the Sewing Awl, get a brand name unit. I use a speedy stitch and it rocks. Bought the HF and it is junk. The thread is too flimsy and the needles break too easy. Hobby Lobby carries another brand that looks decent. The needles all seem to be sized different.
That’s a good info thanks
Do you have any advice on creating patterns? It’s a little confusing regarding seam allowances etc.
You got any recommendations for bag repair and restoration repair tool kit?
I made my first leather pouch today and sucked at it with an Amazon tool leather kit that also sucks! lol.
Oh no.....new hobby approaching...
Try to get a ruler with a cork backing. A standard ruler slides around too much and screws up your "straight" lines !
Weighted dead blow hammer, they are also plastic. Also cheap at Harbor freight.
Ya those are awesome. They also have some brass hammers that would be nice
shoutout to that cutting board for not being reduced to a pile of mush yet
What about needles? Or is it nedles or needels or nedels.....
I didn't catch anything considering a burnishing tool (i'm just listening though, so I may have missed it). I recall you use an oak dowel, does anything else work good too? I assume it being a harder wood is required. These beginner tutorials are great by the way!
8.58
Doesn't really have to be harder wood. You just use them to apply friction, not pressure. They even make some of them out of plastic
@@lizzienicks4993 Thanks, definitely missed it
@@jameshollingshead1845 Thanks for the response, much appreciated!
I’m just tryna make a leather knife sheath and a phone sheath I’m not trying to get fully into it
The tread with the quick stitch sewing awl is terrible. It doesn't hold a knot and the stitching will unravel. The awls okay just use different thread.
There are a couple $80-90 sets on Amazon I’m debating. They are supposed to have everything. Would you recommend I get the tools individually?
I am a complete beginner. Except 4th grade field trip experience, lol. All I know is, a regular sewing needles doesn’t work for leather.
no. buy what he recommended plus an edge beveler and some leather needlles. I would also add emory cloth. you might also need a creaser if you work in that style. Add tools as you need them.
You may or may not need leather carving tools, stamps etc. it's more important to find the right knife for yourself and figure out what types of work you enjoy.
@@rosestewart1606 I actually got the “deluxe” set on Amazon. It has everything I’d ever want plus more. It’s a good entry point I’d say, I’m learning what I like and what I don’t. Also, I’m learning finished (cheap scrap) leather doesn’t take tooling. It’s a learning process. I’m a dabbler, so beginner quality tools will suffice. Like paints, if I ever need the better stuff, I’ll know exactly what I get then.
first time watching a vid of yours so i have to ask. whats the deal with the dupont logo in the background?
I found it dumpster diving ha ha
@@RoseAnvil wow thats rare. weird to see in a leatherworking shop though haha
Ya i have a bunch of random stuff hanging on the walls. We have a 20 foot american flag, a wall cover in motorcycle gas tanks and other strange things ive horded over the years
Where would I buy the actual leather?
I bought mine from Springfield tannery. There’s a lot of videos out there regarding the different cuts of leather you can buy. For reference I bought a double shoulder.
Ok
Like cutting butter.
Why do you have the big DuPont sign behind you
Hey Rose Anvil, if you want to save ye ol hammar soak that bad boy in antifreeze.
Wait what!? How does that work
@@RoseAnvil AvE made a video on the trick. The wood soaks it up and unlike water it doesn't evaporate so easily.
