I've never heard of conditioning with saddle soap. I use it to clean very dirty leather with some water and a brush so it gets nicely lathered up. My experience is that it's a great cleaner that dries the leather out a bit, not a conditioner at all. I always have to condition after using saddle soap. It leaves a film because you're supposed to use it with water and wipe it off, just like you wouldn't use soap as a hand lotion.
The title says conditioners AND cleaner, and he has a video about how to clean and condition boots and he says exactly what you said, I think he just wanted to test it and see what happens

Thanks for the love Rose Anvil! Would love to send you our Water Protectant No. 3 formula as it was specifically formulated to protect leather against the elements/moisture/water/snow/etc. The beautiful thing about this protectant is that it is able to provide a high level of water repellency WITHOUT clogging up the pores of the leather. This allows the leather to continue to breathe, which is super important. As you likely know, all of our products are not only made from ALL-NATURAL, but cosmetic grade ingredients. Don't hesitate to reach out should you have questions at any time! Cheers.
Can you use the Chamberlains products in conjunction? Also would love to see a comparison between some of the tops, Bick, Obenaufs, Leather Honey, Saphir, etc
I use mink oil for my walking boots and I often walk in very wet conditions. For the best reults you need to leave them for at least 12 hours after application.
I combine the mink oil with sno seal for my work boots. After cleaning with saddle soap I put a light coat of mink oil on, let it set for 24 hours and then apply a light coat of sno seal by heating up the sno seal until it’s liquid and applying it with a cloth. Let it dry for an hour, buff it and then repeat with a second coat. And that work boot won’t need another application of sno seal for 3 months, and I saddle soap and condition them with mink oil once a year. Other than that, I just brush them daily after wearing them.
Recently went to Argentina and your videos really helped me choose a lot of quality leather goods, since they produce a lot of leather for an affordable price!
The Best? The best I've used is Obenauf's, they have a wax and a oil. They do darken the leather quite a bit, but if you're worried about work boots that aren't meant to be pretty, Obenauf's is fantastic. I've brought weathered and sundried saddlebags back from the dead with that stuff, really impressive.
Love your videos. You are obvioisly a gifted leather worker. However, these are fair criticisms. And it's nice to see a few mistakes sometimes. Reminds us RUclipsrs don't always have a team of writers. But yes sir, there are a few things to note. The saddle soap as many others have pointed out. It's purely a cleaner. It is important to apply with a wet applicator only after rubbing the applicator on the soap cake until it begins to froth. Then either wipe off immediately, or lit it dry then brush off. The discoloration you noted with the saddle soap is a result of it drying out the leather beneath. That's when you would reach for the other items you have in this video. As far as the conditioners you have in your video, they each have their strengths for specific use cases. The mink oil is an excellent choice for restoring older leather pieces. It also contains natural water resistant properties. Not as strong as the Aussie, but certainly better than the other items. I say that, but the leather conditioner has the potential to give the mink oil a run for it's money. Depending on the type. Fiebings leather balm has atom wax mixed in with it. This serves as a wax coating when buffed in. The Aussie is great for purses or handbags that are exposed to the elements due to it's higher water resistance. This is owed to it's petroleum base with need wax additive. All great products depending on what you need to use it on. Just taking the chance to return the favor for all of the knowledge you've shared to everyone that has watched your excellent videos!
Good comparison. When cleaning my saddle and horse gear saddle soap works into the leather best when the applicator is quite damp. The moisture on the applicator allows the saddle soap to lather up which allows best cleaning and penetration.
I use sno-seal on all of my leathers, wallet, leather iPhone case, boots and work gloves. It works great to block out the water and softens the leather well.

The Chamberlain's Leather Milk is the best one. I have been using it for many years. Chamberlain's Leather Milk is very safe to all kinds of leather and colors because it doesn't react with leather to change original leather color. It also has very nice smell and the nice smell remains on the jackets for a long time. The jackers never go bad smell with the Chamberlain's Leather Milk.

It’s more of just a comparison between stuff I have around the shop to show what they do to leather and any properties they have. Not really about how to use saddle soap. Maybe I’ll do a video on how to use saddle soap and a few tricks I’ve learned, for instance it works great as an edge slicking compound for straps.
As am I. I was taught to always make sure I followed up the saddle soap with a conditioner on all surfaces, just more or less depending on what part of the saddle it was. You could always tell on the saddles when someone forgot the conditioner, they would look dry and matted. Maybe it's different for the leather used in shoes.

very good video. all i have at home is the mink oil and i've been using that to condition my leather bags - so far no major issues. i find it to work the best on smooth leather (as it indicated on the oil container) , but i also use them on the pebble leather bags.
U should test out sno seal too. Mink oil and sno seal are great. Mink oil for everyday use and sno seal for water and harsh environment where temperature can be difficult.

So its just like hand lotions for dry skin. The protection is directly proportional to the oiliness and inversely proportional to residuelessness. Your favorite is the least protective.
I think the best would be a combined approach. Condition with one product and protect with a second product. Additionally the Saddle Soap is mostly a cleaner.
I am using a combo of the Fiebings Saddle Soap followed by Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP (leather preservative). Going to use them on some well worn Irish Setter leather moc toe boots that are a little dirty and very dry after couple seasons of hard upland hunting.
Hey just a tip. I noticed you said that some left residue behind. As far as I know the Aussie is supposed to be buffed off. I imagine the others are the same. The saddle soap is supposed to be rinsed off I don’t think it’s supposed to go on without rinsing. I could be wrong but I have a good bit of experience with saddle soap and Aussie. The hazing you see is the wax in the products that should be buffed off. Hope this helps. Thanks! -Mike
Cool thanks for the info. I didn’t put it in the video but I let them all sit for a while and then buffed off any residual conditioner off with a cloth.

You using the Aussie' , need to use a heat gun to thoroughly warm the leather beforehand. Continue to heat while applying. Repeat applications until it doesn't seem to penetrate. Allow to dry over night. Then buff. Can also apply on reverse.

My dad was an Army Drill Sergeant and swore by Saddle Soap with a wet brush lather to clean, followed up with dubbed Mink Oil to condition (preferably getting the boot warm with a hair dryer or something first) ... Of course this was on boots that he wasnt spit shining with wax lol. This is how I was taught to do it and its always worked for me but im open minded and would be open to try other products. Ive heard good things about Obernaufs and Neatsfoot for example just never tried it.

For lighter coloured leathers, I was advised that using a vegetable-based conditioner/proofer will darken the colour a lot less than a product that uses animal-based oils. Supposedly extra virgin coconut has exactly the same properties when applied to leather as mink oil. Do you have experience with using coconut oil or a vegetable-based product (Saphir offers one such product called Everest Dubbin) ?
Thanks for sharing your insight. This comment section is becoming a really good resource. I’ve never used virgin coconut oil but I could see how it would work great.

This was great, trying to restore a collectible jacket that wAs made in 2009 and has not been worn or used since purchase and in need of tlc and your video helped me weed out bad choices i almost made had i not seen your video. I probably would have ruined the jacket, so thank you so much!🤗👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
very good video. all i have at home is the mink oil and i've been using that to condition my leather bags - so far no major issues. i find it to work the best on smooth leather (as it indicated on the oil container) , but i also use them on the pebble leather bags.
Thanks for the info! Mink oil is pretty hard to beat for an all around conditioner
U should test out sno seal too. Mink oil and sno seal are great. Mink oil for everyday use and sno seal for water and harsh environment where temperature can be difficult.
was wondering about conditioners, i like the fact you used the most popular leather types. cheers
im glad it helped!
We just did a GIANT order of harnesses which means we have tons of scraps! So instead of just picking 10 winners, I decided to send everyone who has commented as of (3pm MST on 10/25/19) a set of coasters. So CONGRATS! I just need you to send me your name and mailing address to service@roseanvil.com and we will get some in the mail for you!
To make things easier on my end I will be sending these out on Tuesday in a big batch so please send me your address by Monday (10/28)! So don't miss that deadline if you want some.
*Unfortunately we can only send free coasters to people with a US address.
In Alberta so i’m out.
Shoes gear’s beeswax has worked awesome for me, you do need to use a horse hair brush followed by a heat gun to warm the boot and conditioner before applying.
I really like this video! It’s nice to see the performance of these without having to go out and buy all of them.
Aussie leather conditioner and kiwi mink oil are mainly Vaseline (petrolatum)
Just wanted to let you know that I LOVE your videos!! Your honest opinion is priceless & I truly appreciate your vast knowledge of leathers. Your videos are AWESOME!! Than you so much!!! 🙏😁🤩🤩🤩👍🏻👍🏻🙏🙏🙏
Really good comparison for conditioners, Thanks
Finally , an unbiased review ,
Please don't stop , how about other
Manufacturers and products ,
Especially to restore older , high
Quality shoes like she'll Cordovan
And shark !
Keep up the good work , many Thanks !
Bill
So its just like hand lotions for dry skin. The protection is directly proportional to the oiliness and inversely proportional to residuelessness. Your favorite is the least protective.
Great video, I work restore leather gu n straps and this helped decide the best for my work.
I think the best would be a combined approach. Condition with one product and protect with a second product. Additionally the Saddle Soap is mostly a cleaner.
Good video I'm sure many of us new guys have been wondering about this subject, I know I have.
Glad I could help!
I am using a combo of the Fiebings Saddle Soap followed by Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP (leather preservative). Going to use them on some well worn Irish Setter leather moc toe boots that are a little dirty and very dry after couple seasons of hard upland hunting.
Bickman's Bick 4 ftw. An excellent moisturizer that doesn't affect the color or finish of the leather.
There seems to be a lot of products on the market. Its good to see some put to use and tested.
I wish I could test them all!

You using the Aussie' , need to use a heat gun to thoroughly warm the leather beforehand. Continue to heat while applying. Repeat applications until it doesn't seem to penetrate. Allow to dry over night. Then buff.
Can also apply on reverse.
I like the idea of leather coasters. Great channel too
I'm curious how Redwing's products (like the leather cream or conditioner) stack up to these. Also, at 6:27, he says Chamberlain "did the worst out of all of these," but then he says it's his favorite one at the end. I wasn't sure if I missed something in between.
I thought, and have always used saddle soap with water to create suds, as a cleaner before using a conditioner which in my case has always been Lexol.
have all the coasters been given away? cool coasters -- enjoyed seeing the Nicks boot cut in half and hearing about the boots history......thanks!
Very helpful and informative. We have always used Saddle Soap for our horse tack but I want to look into a couple of your suggestions. Thanks
Good video, your one of my go to sources for leather consumer products, cheers.
Thanks a lot. you helped me to decide what to buy: will go with the Chamberlain leather milk!
Love leather.Such a great material to work with. Thanks for all the know how.
Excellent information, very informative and a great help for conditioning your items made of leather, Thank you.
Great video. I use mink oil for my boots.
👍
Good luck on the channel man glad you're advertising happy I found ya!
thanks for the support Rodney!
I enjoyed this. Closer to winter could you do a video on water/snow proofing?
Definitely try out black rock leather and rich. It did a great job for me at getting out light surface scratches.
I’ve been using smiths leather balm. So far, I love it! Love your videos
Stock and Barrel was just telling me about smiths. I will have to try them out

Good info to share. Liked the comparisons between produts.
Good cleaning products! What do you use to keep and protect these leather products from everyday use?
Prior to investing in better quality shoes, I still have several constructed with "genuine leather" uppers, which I've been told is the lowest quality of leather sold.
How would your test products work on this lower grade leather?
Love this video! I especially liked the water test!
that one surprised me the most

Very informative on leather conditioners. Thanks
Thank you!
My question is not about conditioner but you said the chrome excel is kind of a mix between veg and chrome tanned and I was just curious about how it is to work with and how is it with burnishing ? I just started working with leather and your. Channel has giving me a lot of info.
Thanks for making great informative videos!
Great video man ! Learned a lot . I’m new to leather works ! So this is very informative !!!
Im glad i can help start your new addiction

Thanks this was helpful. I need to condition my backpack soon before it gets dry and wrinkled.
I'd like to see another comparison and would suggest Colourlock Elephant Leather Preserver Wax, which many people seem to rate highly. I think you have to work it into the leather a bit though.
That sounds cool
Thanks for making this, I have wondering how some of those worked!
You’re welcome!

Thank you so much for the video! Like the coasters, looks so beautiful!
That’s fabulous, your channel is really helping me out in my fledgling leather work. Thank you so much.
Youre welcome!
I think this wonderful. I own a lot of leather products and always looking 4 a reputable leather conditioner....thank u....
nice to see mom and pop shops
Great vid man. I was looking for some leather conditioner and its effects on shoes. atleast I know now that most of the conditioners doesn't really have a negative effect like change of color etc. thanks
just make sure to try it on a less obvious spot of your boot first and wait until it fully dries so you can see how it changes the leather.
I'm glad I came across your channel as I have a few leather pieces and would like to keep them in the best possible condition that I can. These pieces are an investment as I don't favor fast, unsustainable fashion. Your video was informative in learning possible conditioners for my leather garments. Thank you for sharing this useful information.
Thanks for the tips! My bf has Frye boots and we were thinking of using his Frye boot wax.
I would try it on a little area first to be sure you like how it changes the leather color
Goin with mink oil, always have. Nice to see the comparison.
Hook up some coasters bud!
Can you do a video where you fully clean and treat some leather boots? I saw you did a video with some Timberlands but I’d love to see some start to finish care videos.
would like to see you also check leather honey as that seems to be one of the most popular conditioners.
Maybe I’ll do another one eventually
