    My best analogy for this for people who play fighting games is this: Splatoon 2 is the balance equivalent of Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Little Mac might be the objectively worst character in the game, but that doesn't stop Peanut from styling on people with him. Goo Tuber might be one of the worst weapons in Splatoon 2, but that doesn't stop the Goo Tuber main on the enemy team from sniping me 3 times in a single match because I couldn't fecking find where they were shooting from. Every weapon regardless of kit is able to do _something_ and perform well when played to its strengths.

    Rather than saying “bad weapons”, I’ve been saying “outclassed kits”. Every main weapon is viable, but the sub & special is the make or break for the weapons.
    Being outclassed can be due to a multitude of reasons: lack of synergy in the kit, nerfs, and how the meta is changing. Can you use V Gloogas to win? Yes. Is it harder to win compared to using Deco or Kensa? Probably. Hopefully 3 gives us more kits that have synergy.

    • @LunaDragofelis
      @LunaDragofelis 2 года назад +8

      I really hope there will be more flexibility in what sub and special to use, instead of there being 2-3 fixed kits per main weapon. Maybe even free choice of sub/special.

      vrange vooglas and vunder are severely lacking compared to the other kits the weapons have, grim gloogla deco and kunder (maybe sorunder) all outclass their vannila variants in some way like grim having the burst bomb combo and having missles for a global special or gloogla deco using walls to dodge roll to protect themselves and kunder using torpedo and armor for a good supportive kit

    • @Nihonguy
      @Nihonguy 2 года назад +1

      Honestly ive struggled with "meta defining kits" a lot, the weapons often dont flow with my play style, i use vanilla inkbrush a lot in splatoon 2 and win a very good number of games and people have called me crazy for using whats considered a weak kit, I also use explosher deco despite the nerfs because i know how to use it well even outside of splat zones. So yeah i dont buy into "bad weapons" argument as much as others do myself

    I feel that most people forget about the fact that the undercover regens it’s shield as soon as you get a splat or an assist. It pairs well with inkmines when you can assist or even splat an enemy in your spawn area even if you’re far away, and if you don’t get splashdown cancelled, you can still get a lot of damage from mid-range with splashdown. Since it also charges the fastest, you can also squid-jump and splashdown on objectives fairly regularly. That is why I think it is a heavily underrated weapon

    After reaching X rank I felt like I hit a wall, I couldn't choose a main. Before I was in X rank, my friend (which was in top 2000) recommended my the splash and the nzap and I played them until S+(1-4). But the reason why I quit those weapons wasn't because I was bad at them, in fact I was really good at them, I quit because it gave me no enjoyment. And that was when I started experimenting with mains. In the end of S+4, I started picking up the tetras because the 4 rolls seemed really cool. But as I climbed S+, I grew out of my "slayer mindset" and started playing more and more passive, so I picked up the charger. I started experimenting with the scope and the normal charger but ended up with the scoped one mainly because it seemed a bit more campy and easier to play, but as I started playing more, the friends that were in X rank kept telling me that there was no reason to play the scoped charger (mainly because of the lower fov and less mobility given that it can't hold a charge). So I picked up the gootuber, don't ask why but I just felt like it (my friends still opposed but I didn't care lol). I'm now in X rank (2150 ish) and I'm vibing with the eliter scope and the gootuber.

    Personally I love playing Gootuber but the only thing I always wonder was:
    "why can't it charge while swimming ?"
    I think it would be a great rework (ofc don't put the full speed on the swim) and makes an interesting MPU
    I am not game designer but I see the charging time like:
    no MPU: 40% speed
    3 main MPU: 70% speed
    I think that makes the weapon more different from his competitor the squiffer and keep the gimmicky aspect of the weapon
    with that change I don't see a problem with the short range and goes well with curling
    ps: as always great video! keep it up!

    An analogy I've always found great as to a reason to play the more overlooked weapons is one I've stuck by for this whole game as a Glooga Deco main:
    Sure, you could use the top tiers, have an easier time and dominate all the time. But at the end of the match, when those results display, all someone will see is another person using top tiers with their defined strengths to win. Blaming the weapon for making them so good. There's not a lot of sticking potential to see.
    But when you make yourself known using a mid or low tier weapon, you may have to work hard to overcome and play around your weaknesses and worse matchups, but in the end, when you get good enough and style on an entire X rank lobby, or take on a competitive team and win, they might just remember you a little more for making it work, against all the odds.

    I just rather like to play like a supportive scout with my Undercover Brella. Running around and placing boosted Ink Mines, and using SuperJumping Splashdowns to preserve the time, teammates and turf, while getting in as close to the opponent as possible so that I can bump into them and either use the bump as a boost or as a way to make extra damage, while using the shield like an extra life that I have to be able to take advantage of. So, I kinda create an entire team dynamic where I am basically painting out a path for my team and I have to depend on them to cover the weaknesses like the Unreliable splatting and being extremely weak against basically Buckets, Chargers and Rollers. I just try to preserve the turf of my teammates so that they have somewhere to run while staying alive more often than the opponents, I can't splat them but I can beat them by dragging them about. Which is honestly why I prefer using Vunder on like... well, all of the modes to be honest, I can just set up Ink mines on the opponents super clams and I can drag them all over the place and Pursuit (you know, that Dark type Pokemon move?) them down reliably, I can use the SuperJump Splashdown to preserve Allies time on the Tower and to just crowd control protect Rainmaker, especially if an ally just sharks out in an area with a lot of Enemy Ink and right next to something like a Sting Ray or Tenta Missiles. And finally, Splat Zones is just an outright nightmare for the opponents to deal with if I put 2 Ink Mines on there and I constantly gain Splashdown for my team to just step on the Zone for me to Superjump to them and get it back.

    A similar situation during the "Bad Weapons With Strengths" section around the strong counterplay part, is Ike in Super Smash Bros Brawl, where he has good strengths and pretty even matchups with everyone except Meta Knight. But because Meta Knight is used so often (because of being the undisputable best character in the game), and Ike has such a bad matchup with him, Ike is used much less often in competitive play.

  • @lunamaster123
    @lunamaster123 2 года назад +6

    I think there is a disconnect between the topic and comments. The comments are most likely referring to ranked... in which everything works. Splashdown is a decent special when people can't shoot it down. People can flank harder and make plays easier against players that don't check your maps. Heck, even armor weak weapons don't suffer as much when the armor user isn't coordinating with the team (though RIP against double armor). My point is they are mostly likely arguing from experience and not from the competitive and pro scene.
    Personally, bad is a relative term that get used objectively too often. When people hear bad, they think "unusable," "doesn't work," or "can't win." Nobody said that. When people say something is bad, it is always in relation to the other options at hand.

    For me, the most unusable or uncompetitive weapon is also one of my favorites. It's the splat brellas. The tenta brellas fill their niche well and the undercover brellas are strong enough to enable me to take over a game, but the inherent weaknesses of the splat brellas along with all the many nerfs over the patches make it simply not viable at a high level, at least for me. The shield breaks in a single hit from bombs and chargers now (suction & splat bomb is fine), the damage is very inconsistent and some glancing blows yield as little as 16.2%, you can't do anything while the shield is open but strafe, it's horrible on ink consumption, and there is about 13 or so frames of lag when you drop into the ink before you start to refill the tank (luna blaster also has this nerf). The fire rate also leaves you open to any type of shooter, which is just the way it works. I'm certainly not going to complain about that, just pointing out that it is one of its weaknesses. I hope the splat brella goes back to its original form in Splatoon 3 so it can be somewhat good in X rank solo queue.
    P.S. I think the nerfs came because having a semi-mobile shield in a LAN environment or any environment where there is constant communication between teammates can be pretty strong. They just left it overwhelmingly weak in normal ranked modes.

    I completely understand what you mean about these bad weapons. For me, I use the vanilla inkbrush. I really love the fact it has a splat bomb and my play style is based around having a melee weapon with a sub-weapon that can splat. But splashdown is bad. But I don't use it the normal way. Instead of using it for splatting enemies, I use it for turfing and an ink tank refill once I run out. I also use it as a way to push back close-range weapons as some close-range weapons (like other brushes) have it harder to counter splashdown. I play very aggressively but I know when to retreat and splashdown can be used like this to help you push back enemies away so you can run. But this is very rare and if they have a long enough range weapon like anything that has more range than n-zap/splash then I'm dead if they don't react fast enough. Another way to use splashdown is as a surprise special. A inkbrushes best quality is its speed and using this you can flank enemies and come up from behind. And splashdown can be used to either splat them or at least capture an objective. Finally, splashdown has been seen more recently as a special to counter other specials. This is very rare and lucky but there are a few specials that splashdown has the advantage over. Ultra Stamp can be canceled with a splashdown as the stamp's reaction time isn't good enough to throw the hammer to stop the splashdown that is right in their face. Baller is another one because if you use splashdown right before the baller has the opportunity to activate their explosion you can break the baller and splat them. The hardest special to counter with splashdown but is possible is the booyah bomb. If you see someone charging up a booyah bomb and have a splashdown ready. Use your splashdown right underneath them and that'll break their armor instantly and then you can splat them maybe even before they have the chance to throw their booyah bomb.

    Weapons feeling like they're meant to have matchups is kinda my issue with Splatoon 2's general balance.
    If you're playing a combat-oriented Weapon without purposes outside of combat and get shut down by an enemy's Weapon, well...Have fun losing the game at very little fault of your own.
    Sure, stuff like Aerospray is obviously shut down in combat 80% of the time, but that's fine because you don't run it for combat, you run it for Special Spa- I mean, TURFING capabilities.
    I think that Weapons shouldn't be so hard-countered by other Weapon types. Generalists (Shooters especially) are the kings/queens of shutting down Weapons with ANY weakness, and to me they seem to be a big part of the issue.
    I'm just rambling because I went into Ranked with Explosher and had a decent time bullying the slower Weapons before I got my face kicked in by Dualies and Shooters.

    If Vanilla Range had Splat Bombs instead of Suction Bombs, which a 10% increase in efficiency via subs is huge for a weapon that takes 11% per shot base, it would most likely be a high B to mid A tier weapon and not a C tier Tower Control-only god. Splat Bombs would only be fair in its case to deal with Ink Armor for a quick combo even if it leaves you with anywhere between 32% to 28% ink left, only affording one or two more shots based on Saver Main stacking, and quick turfing potential to build Inkstorm faster, with the only loss being Suction which is very good at denying the Tower, but that's the only upside for it.
    EDIT: Also I've mained VRange since day 1 of Splatoon 2, and despite it being generally a shit weapon I have perfected a build that gives me very decent results even in Rank X, albeit sacrificing a bit of movement and protection for consistency and ink efficiency. I am extremely hyped that 3 has better movement options that helps Blaster as a weapon class approach in many more situations, especially vertical ones if that wall swim jump tech is to be believed.

    Man I’m so sad how done-dirty Forge Pro was. In S1 I majorly respected the weapon after I would get over 16+ kills each match when I used it. And that was back when I didn’t even use sub weapons that often.I didn’t have a lick of damage-up either.
    But with Splatoon 2’s version…. Meh… heartbroken when I found out it suckedddd.

  • @TheLaXandro
    @TheLaXandro 2 года назад +1

    vGloogs are pretty good though. It's the kind of main that doesn't need kits to function and is arguably one of the best things at dealing with the meta specials, and that makes them arguably the best mine setters on par with Inkbrush Nouveau. Most other weapons either have to give up a crucial tool to get the Mine or are backliners, but Gloogas, while having very strong subs on the other two kits, work well enough without them to afford using the Mine.

    I don't see why this is even an issue for some people. Every competitive game has a tier list of some kind, and in every tier list there will be those weapons/characters/sets/whatever that are objectively the worst. That's just how it is. The only way there would be no "bad weapons" in a game like Splatoon2 is if there was only one weapon.

    I love playing Vanilla Undercover because the combination of ink mines, fast splatdowns, the canopy that can tank some hits while you shoot and the right abilities make this weapon great at harrasment tactics. Granted, I don't play at a particularly high level, but still.
    You'd go on ahead of the team, place ink mines at choke points you know enemies will go through, preferably just so that they can't disable or avoid them by inking the floor they are on. So, enemies would get through there and get marked or even killed by the mine which is cool.
    It also works well for hit and run kind of gameplay, so you can place mines, do hit and runs and if an enemy is chasing you, you not only disrupt them (since someone has to chase you down) but also get kills off of that. The shield protects a bit and allows you to back up.
    You can also ambush with splatdown, which is always fun.
    None one in my circle of friends believed me that the undercover is cool, until they just all kind of had to resign when I killed them a bunch with well placed ink mines.
    It's by far not a really strong weapon and I'm sure in the more competitive high levels of play it just gets destroyed, but I'm having a lot of success with it online and against my friends for sure.

If you wanna do damage use a bomb. Mines do such minor damage it’s painful to use. They’re mildly useful on eliter though

I've found the Undercover Brella mentioned in the video a very nice way to hold area's against multiple enemies. This because you can set up the mines in strategic locations and then ambush them with the shielded brella. The fast splashdown is just icing on the cake at this point.

High level play shouldn't have a monopoly on weapon viability. Ultimately - good and bad are relative depending on your goals.

Undercover’s shield is shredded very quickly, it deals low damage, and I’m not sure how I can stall fights when the enemies have a better paint output than me, and bombs too. Gootuber feels like charger a bit, except you either hit your shot, or the enemy sees you in ink and kills you. They’re confusing and hard to use is what I find the issue with. But this is merely my opinion. The kits also affect them.

    actually Melee Fox aint a bad comparison for Splatoon, Sense he just exposes How most metas work when you break it down enough
    Sense he is so powerful the meta is basicly just using jul to beat Up anything else or using His few counters to beat him, so the meta is basicly Fox, Fox's counter and that counters counter
    everything else is outclassed, which means that to use any other character means ether you are not good enough with Fox, or you're so good that you can win even without Fox and/or you are doing something weird and new with the character that other players aren't going to know How to handle due to lack of experience, which is how Mewtwo king Lost to a Yoshi
    it's basicly the same as using under powered weapons, you use them because you're ether not good enough with the meta weapons or you're so good(via skill and team building)that you can win even without those meta weapons

    If you want to know what an actual unusably bad weapon in a shooter looks like, you can look over at Team Fortress 2 I think. That game has some famously terrible weapons that truly have no practical use case. Looking at a traditionally "bad" weapon in splatoon like the Aerospray MG, the weapon still has its niche in heavy turfing and special spam, even if those elements are outclassed. While not great, that's still usable even if its use isn't exactly stellar. The same cannot be said for, say, the Sharpened Volcano Fragment, a melee weapon that serves the purpose of igniting enemies up close... on a class with a flamethrower. I think that's ultimately where the confusion would stem from. When you call a weapon "bad" the mind immediately goes to things like the Sharpened Volcano Fragment which have no practical applications.
