...just got a new Spark package without the controller. Would you know if the one included battery is enough to perform these updates? Am relatively new to rc and rely on the help of you and others to get thru the somewhat confusing instructions included with some of these products....Mahalo
FYI: Just received my SPARK and went though the updates last night. If you have the COMBO pack you'll receive two (2) batteries. You'll want to update your SPARK and firmware for EACH BATTERY before you fly and use them. You'll get a warning on the DJI GO software when you install the other battery that an update is needed. Again, do this before you fly!
Definitively earned a subscriber. I’m a new flyer, and just purchased the DJI Tello and Spark as beginner drones. I managed to get them set up and flying without any tutorials, but I wish I’d seen this ahead of time!
I have watched at least 10 spark reviews. This is the only one that tells me eveeything. The others skip over so much. Thank you for such an in depth review.

Although I have heard great things about the spark, when the mavic mini came out, I instantly knew which one to buy. Having the physical connection between the transmitter and the phone is much better than a WiFi signal.
I have both the Spark and the Mini, and I personally much prefer the Spark, more solidly built and I use a cable between the controller and my phone, just like the mini,No wifi connection needed! I put my phone on airplane mode.the spark has the obstacles avoidance and the mini does not. One thing I do like about the mini is the slightly longer run time per battery. My spark has 5 batteries.
well that's the best unboxing to start up vid yet , it was really helpful to see the problems you had setting it up and how you resolved them , that means newbies wont panic when things don't go according to plan , well done mate ;)

Just bought one on the back of your reviews. Excellent channel by the way. I was torn between this and the mavic air but the air is twice the price and is no way twice as good. I'm not fussed about 4k video at the moment so the spark seems ideal for what I want. Just under £400 for the fly more set with a discount. Didn't want to pay anymore than that really.
I dabbled in self build quads using hobbyking kk2.1 & 3DR APM years ago as fly fpv fixed wing occasionally. They have come a long way since then! It's now basically a self flying camera, makes you wonder what they'll do in another 5 years. A flying mobile phone I suspect.
Just got mine from DJI! Yea! I took one week from the day I ordered it to the day it came to the door Really Fast! I bought the fly more combo. Not disappointed! It didn't even need a firmware update! Charge the batteries and fly. Not bad video or pictures!I should do a video but I get to excited and tear the box apart and fly! DJI actually has several "HowTo" videos on how to get thru the Update Procedure. Perhaps had you watched them before you attempted the update "on the fly", it would have gone more smoothly. Looking forward to your flight review. Mahalo!
In a perfect world. They do not cover many necessary tweeks that must be performed to go thru that process...turning on and off cellular data....having to reconnect from one thing to another in this process of getting set up. Many other issues.
Dustin Excellent excellent excellent & very informative video !!! One thing I have seen on other videos about the Spark is that you can plug in to the controller a OTG USB cable & A mini USB to USB cable into the Smartphone to get a hard line attachment so you don't have to rely on the WiFi signal ... Also when doing updates on the unit plug in to the unit so not to loose power drane on battery & maybe just maybe it won't take as long to update with a " wire atached" !! I was absolutely confuse too during the set up process. They should make your video as official one to watch before setting up. I, too, the firmware update stuck at 99%, just press the home button on the ipad and reconnect to homeserver wifi to complete the process.
Great video thanks for taking the time to go fully in-depth. I have just ordered one of these so this was useful to know what to expect as a first-time drone owner. :)
I just ordered a spark yesterday. After watching this update it seems like I may have made a mistake. Seems like a pita! I have many hobby grade drones and an old fc40 DJI Phantom FC-40 that's heavily modded but none of them are a pita like this Spark or any newer DJI drone seems to be! I got it used with the fly more combo + a remote and better case for $180. It only has 3 flights on it! Looks new. We will see how it goes. If nothing else I can sell it for a decent profit. I'll more than likely keep it.
Now that's a lot of hassle just to get it to fly, I guess this one is kind of a mini Magic with a lot of limitations... can't wait to see you fly it around using only "The Force" of palm control, eh eh...
Hey Dustin, nice to see the Spark setup; but my god i hate dji updates... Having dealt with both the P3 advanced and the Mavic, i can honestly say that Dji should work on their software upgrades. The process should be simpler and they should regroup them and do like one a month. At some point, it felt like there was an update every two days on the Mavic... We all want and appreciate new features, as well as bug fixes, but it needs to be streamlined. Looking forward to the flight review, and hoping for a quick comparison between the mavic's footage and the spark's!
I agree Alexis! These products are so advanced but the update process is still not trouble free and sometimes confusing. I'll try to get some comparisons :)

I currently have a phantom 3 standard thinking of upgrading to mavic or spark with fly more which would you recommend? Obviously mavic is better but with price difference Im thinking about the spark. Thanks you're my go to reviewer.
i seen couple people who connected the phone with the controller with a micro usb cable for better connection and longer max distance. and you dont need wifi connection with the craft and phone.
Very detailed set-up video, I followed along as I unboxed my Spark and got it set-up. I had the same confusing software update process as you, it was a little different on a IOS device (iPhone), some steps were easier but it still took forever and the update got stuck. But after over a hour of messing around with it all was good a had successful test flight in the driveway. Another great video, thanks for posting.

I watched a video where someone combined a cable from his Phantom four with white usb/mini usb cable than comes with the Spark and he was able to contact his phone to the TX like this. And the wifi turned off and he connected through usb cable. So you can do it, if can find the video again I will post the link. I'm looking forward to your test flight video.
Fast forward to the last five minutes of this video, he demo's how to connect the Spark to the TX via the USB cables and it cancels wifi and use the hardwire connection instead.
I have had an awful job despite watching your video several times. I have my spark unable to turn off despite going wrong with the setup. I hope I haven't damaged it but the only way to turn the spark off is by disconnecting its battery. I am completely new to DJI so disconnecting the battery is the only way I could switch it off. Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I bought it today. Waiting for shipment, so... is it still difficult to update your firmware? Cause i saw you had problems... cause if i have to go through that... i will die of the confusion!!!😂
Well the drone will have to be damned good to overcome the frustration of that set-up system! Not inspiring me so far. I look forward to the rest of the testing in the hope that it is all worth it
hey Dustin vid is great really helpful. I ended up in a minefield trying to set up my spark but eventually got there. How can you afford all this tech or do you get it free from dji and friends. anyway hope you have a good flight. how many quads do you own or other aircraft. peace
Read the instruction and had no issues. The gimble has 2 axis stabilization as it states in the written info... if you tethered the phone to the controller using a cable you could have left your phones wifi connected to your home wifi, and you would have had a smoother update. Once again if all else fails, read the instructions.
Another words... The option of updating through wifi only is still really just a frustrating option 😅🍻. Glad you figured out the plug in option to the art the headache.
@@DustinDunnill if your phone is set to use Wi-Fi whenever it's available then it's not dji's fault it's your phone settings that are stopping you download over cell network Wi-Fi is available.
Thx for this video, I was having the same trouble, trying to activate my spark.. it won't automatically use my cell phone data... and I have no home Wi-Fi.. uhhhh....
Nice review Dustin. Can't wait to see some flight tests! I took your advice and bought an eachine E010C to practice Fpv. Now I have less confidence.😂 Not sure if it's because I'm used to flying outside, or the small sticks on the controller, but I'm over compensating my throttle horribly.lol Guess it'll be awhile for I take out the swift 2😅😕

Like the video, but unfortunately the steps for activation (or anything else relative to my Spark) do not work. Can't activate, can't link to the RC, can't do anything except watch the rear motors flash green and the front ones glow red!. Followed your steps to the T, but my drone's camera never rotates up, and the Go 4 App never gives me an option to Activate. Now in fairness, I do not have an SD card as yet, no store in my town, but would not think the card for photos/videos is required for Activation and flight without recording. $500+ spent, 6 days ownership, Flight time - 0!
Well, I still have my RedCat Racing 1:10 scale trucks, in running condition, from 6 years ago and the Carbon has me curious how well they migrated over from the ground based vehicles. The Bugs is nice too, my Bugs 3 is such a blast, so I am already pretty hopeful that this version is an upgrade, but for as nice as it (the 3) flies I'm not sure how they can make it better. Thanks again for your videos, quite informative and entertaining.
+Thomas Gehrdes Jr The redcat carbon 210 is a tovsto falcon 210 rebrand and they said it's got some updates also. The falcon was great so I'd expect the carbon to be as good if not better :)
i have spent 2 4 hr days and still cant get mine to fly but pnce, looses Wi-Fi connection right away, expensive paper weight very frustrated with it tried S7 Edge and S3, no luck

Dustin, my Spark gets a "choppy and delayed" connection on the WiFi between the controller and smartphone or tablet. Interested to see if you experience the same problem. I called DJI they told me to look for a clear channel using the app. My results have been mixed.
Soulztooth To get rid of the video delay use a direct connection through the micro USB plug. You may have to get an adapter micro USB to USB female to make the connection but it will be well worth it!
Thanks for the tip, I already thought of this and called DJI. They told me that the micro USB was only for charging. I just bought the adapter on Amazon. I will let you know if it works!
I'm going to the beach soon and I figure it will be windy I'm looking for a video drone with auto hover 30-50$ I'm new to video drones so I don't know too much about them was wondering if you could make a few suggestions
As a novice, planning to buy a Spark, can one bypass the Wi-Fi connection between the phone and the RC using a cable? Seems it would solve the having to switch networks back and forth! Thanks for the video. Really meant for a newbie like me.
Dustin Dunnill well I got mine with the educational discount for 900 and that's only 200 more than the fly more. And no one in their right mind is going to just buy the spark.
Great review as always. I think the spark is overpriced. If you buy the combo, the price difference is only $200 less to the Marvic. The battery life is a big problem with the spark, i can only fly mine for 12mins, so you have to buy at least 2 additional batteries. The price would add up to the cost of owning a Marvic which has longer flight time and better features..
+Ken it's half the price of mavic and the combo is 100 cheaper than mavics combo... perhaps since you don't get a controller in base version, another 100 cheaper would be nice 👍😆

.Can you use fat sharks with the Spark I have the DJI googles and I have a pair of fat sharks. I use the DJI googles with my phantom 4 pro. There big and bulky but have a great picture. Just wondering. Probably not.
Unfortunatey no unless you can use an easycap to 5.8fpv device to broadcast or connect to fatsharks there may be some Google info on some who've done it :)

U can connect the phone to the controller by using an OTG cable. Using an OTG cable increases the distance that u can fly.
I really like your videos. If I could give some feed back, your playlists are backwards .it's like watching a series on Netflix from new to old .

The only reason they Decided to not make the arms Fold… It’s because they were in the making of a Mavic mini which is now out in 2020

Yes, the back and for with the wifi is a headache, best to connect with an OTG cable directly it seems.

hey Dustin vid is great really helpful. I ended up in a minefield trying to set up my spark but eventually got there. How can you afford all this tech or do you get it free from dji and friends. anyway hope you have a good flight. how many quads do you own or other aircraft. peace
Read the instruction and had no issues. The gimble has 2 axis stabilization as it states in the written info... if you tethered the phone to the controller using a cable you could have left your phones wifi connected to your home wifi, and you would have had a smoother update. Once again if all else fails, read the instructions.
Another words... The option of updating through wifi only is still really just a frustrating option 😅🍻. Glad you figured out the plug in option to the art the headache.
@@DustinDunnill if your phone is set to use Wi-Fi whenever it's available then it's not dji's fault it's your phone settings that are stopping you download over cell network Wi-Fi is available.
I seem to remember the update hanging in more places than on wifi reconnect

Yes so you could actually charge 4 batts at a time with the combo and 2 extra batteries purchased :)

Now I have less confidence.😂 Not sure if it's because I'm used to flying outside, or the small sticks on the controller, but I'm over compensating my throttle horribly.lol Guess it'll be awhile for I take out the swift 2😅😕

Like the video, but unfortunately the steps for activation (or anything else relative to my Spark) do not work. Can't activate, can't link to the RC, can't do anything except watch the rear motors flash green and the front ones glow red!. Followed your steps to the T, but my drone's camera never rotates up, and the Go 4 App never gives me an option to Activate. Now in fairness, I do not have an SD card as yet, no store in my town, but would not think the card for photos/videos is required for Activation and flight without recording. $500+ spent, 6 days ownership, Flight time - 0!

Well, I still have my RedCat Racing 1:10 scale trucks, in running condition, from 6 years ago and the Carbon has me curious how well they migrated over from the ground based vehicles. The Bugs is nice too, my Bugs 3 is such a blast, so I am already pretty hopeful that this version is an upgrade, but for as nice as it (the 3) flies I'm not sure how they can make it better.

Dustin, my Spark gets a "choppy and delayed" connection on the WiFi between the controller and smartphone or tablet. Interested to see if you experience the same problem. I called DJI they told me to look for a clear channel using the app. My results have been mixed.
Soulztooth To get rid of the video delay use a direct connection through the micro USB plug. You may have to get an adapter micro USB to USB female to make the connection but it will be well worth it!
Thanks for the tip, I already thought of this and called DJI. They told me that the micro USB was only for charging. I just bought the adapter on Amazon. I will let you know if it works!
Oh, I know it works. you can search RUclips and find other videos of people doing it. This is also how they connect DJI's goggles to the spark.

Yes, as long as you have the latest update for the goggles and the spark done it will work perfectly.

As a novice, planning to buy a Spark, can one bypass the Wi-Fi connection between the phone and the RC using a cable? Seems it would solve the having to switch networks back and forth! Thanks for the video. Really meant for a newbie like me.

Dustin Dunnill well I got mine with the educational discount for 900 and that's only 200 more than the fly more. And no one in their right mind is going to just buy the spark.
Great review as always. I think the spark is overpriced. If you buy the combo, the price difference is only $200 less to the Marvic. The battery life is a big problem with the spark, i can only fly mine for 12mins, so you have to buy at least 2 additional batteries. The price would add up to the cost of owning a Marvic which has longer flight time and better features..
+Ken it's half the price of mavic and the combo is 100 cheaper than mavics combo... perhaps since you don't get a controller in base version, another 100 cheaper would be nice 👍😆

.Can you use fat sharks with the Spark I have the DJI googles and I have a pair of fat sharks. I use the DJI googles with my phantom 4 pro. There big and bulky but have a great picture. Just wondering. Probably not.
Unfortunatey no unless you can use an easycap to 5.8fpv device to broadcast or connect to fatsharks there may be some Google info on some who've done it :)

Not without a mod to broadcast the video from phone to 5.8ghz but it is possible.
