    One of the best comparison between these two basses!
    I prefer the Special 2018 because it's sound more definited and its hi-end is less "aggressive" and exagerated (smoother) than the 1899 one...

    This is an amazing video!!
    My opinion (that no one asked for):
    1989 overall more Trebly, making it probably less versatile than the Special.
    Special sounds darker, but his enhanced EQ makes it an extremely versatile bass.
    Cheers!

    I love both, they have very similar sounds but the vintage one was much more aggressive with the distortion.

    • @roykato86
      @roykato86 3 года назад +3

      The EQ works differently on the Special. You can get the same sound of the vintage just by tweaking the treble (had the same struggle at the beginning, then I've realised they need to be treated as totally different instruments). Cheers!

    Definitely prefer the sound of the Stingray Special. Way more punch and balls. The both, of course, sound like Stingrays, but the old one just sounds thin and wimpy in comparison. Glad I have the Special (two of them). I've owned a half dozen Stingrays (classics, 2-bands, and 3-bands) over the years, and all have sounded good, but the difference here, like I said, makes me glad I have the Specials.

    • @ileutur6863
      @ileutur6863 2 года назад

      @JimmySpadeful its an audio illusion. You think that because the old stingrays have a naturally more scooped tone and that really does make them better for some things, but the newer ones can get the same sound

      I have a special 4h that I love but really thinking about getting a classic as well. How did the Special compare to the classic in your experience? I've heard the special can sound a lot like a classic but I haven't had a chance to compare them back to back.

    Wow, the special entirely kills the ‘89. The ‘89 sounds so brittle and lacking in punch by comparison. Assuming set up is comparable, as that can have a big impact? Surprised at how weak the ‘89 is!

    • @bassimprovjams3772
      @bassimprovjams3772 2 года назад

      Yea I agree maybe because the alnico pu vs the neo idk I’m not a fan of the alnico, either the ceramic or the neodymium for me just more of a stingray tone to me at least for my ears I had two alnico stingrays and got rid of them both lol

    • @LukeEsther
      @LukeEsther 2 года назад

      I think the special just has more bass and gain when set flat, which could make it seem 'punchier'. To me the '89 has more of the iconic Stingray sound and grit - but whether that's a good thing is up to preference.

    • @bobbyzig3879
      @bobbyzig3879 2 года назад

      18v vs 9v running through the preamp is probably adding some juice to the special.

    • @pCeLobster
      @pCeLobster Год назад

      I wouldn't be so sure. A little volume bump at the amp is all it would take to even them out. At that point the Special would most likely just sound like the '89 with the treble turned down, especially in a band.

  • @billbrendley3915
    @billbrendley3915 8 месяцев назад

    The ‘89 sounds much better. The 2018 sounds like it has a wet blanket over the pickups, compared to the ‘89. Love that sparkle finish, though.

    When you played killing in the name of I felt like the special didn't growl the way it should in a piece like that, same with the slap section, it doesn't growl the same way without that top end. The special sounds bigger, sure... but we have amps for that. If I want a versatile bass I'll just use my J or P.
    I'm disappointed that they discontinued the old stingray, now I have to get a pre-owned one. They've nerfed the attribute that set the stingray apart from all other basses, that aggressive growl... too bad. I wish they'll start making the old stingray again.
