- With the new Bruce Willis Death Wish remake approaching, we thought it would be fun to go looking for sins in the 1974 original. And it was!
Next Week: Sins of something scary, sins of something fantasy.
Remember, no movie is without sin! Which movie's sins should we expose next?!

All the sins you want, then they get all negated by the final scene where Bronson winks while doing the finger gun.
ma70er I hoped for a sequel back in '74 when I saw that scene, and I got one. No decent sequel (besides Star Wars) until '86's Aliens.
That scene is legendary...
In 1974, NYC had 1,554 murders. That's an average of 4.25 per day! (For comparison, there were 311 in 2019.) That means, there were five times as many homicides in 1974. So, yes, it was VERY easy to stumble across crime in 1974. Ding!
And to think, by 1990 the murder rate would top 2,000.
1970’s through the early 90’s NYC was a well known cesspool with a ton of police corruption…
@@eaanyillswhat caused the downturn?
Cameras @@jamesthornton3539
By the late '70s, there were over 100,000 known members of criminal gangs that the police (outnumbered 10 to 1) were monitoring. They actually used that as a tagline for the movie 'The Warriors' (1979).
God the ending of death wish makes me smile so big
"That's a $20 bishslap". That so funny, I love watching these😁
I love looking at the comments to read the same thing I'm hearing at the same timd
One of my favourite movies of all time. Bronson was the 'man' of 70s.
Part of what the film shows here, which is way ahead of its time, is that NONE of the men want to talk about the brutal SA of Paul’s daughter, and the horrible trauma she has suffered as a result (not to mention she saw her mother murdered). The cop initially talks around it, etc. That specific part of the horrific violence - and the reaction of the men - is very meaningful in this film.
@aleister crowley
Yeah, it was pretty graphic for the time, like when they spray painted her after was gross. But even today, Ripper MF's get far less time than say, drug charges or stealing....
Not true. @@charles1964
The original sin: Would you try mugging Charles Bronson?
precisely...Charles Bronson would be the last person you would try to mug..
"New York was made up of 56% muggers back in the day."
That is an accurate statement.
"Why is porn music playing?"
In the 70s we just called that "music".
Hehehahah... yeaahhhh
The Internet Peasant thanks grandpa
You're welcome. Now get off my lawn.
As is "black people are muggers more than whites". Cinema Sins is really showing their leftist views on this one. "Fox News is born" really? Lame.
@@drunkroku4054 Yeah, because everyone knows Fox is sooooo not racist right?
That wasn't discount jeff goldblum, that was Jeff Goldblum!
Came here to make sure someone said that.
The joke is that since Jeff Goldblum wasn't famous yet in this movie, they got him for cheap, aka a discount, he does the same thing w/ Kevin Bacon in one horror movie, I forget which. Friday the 13th maybe?
Duh, he knew that was Jeff. You must be new?
Rin Kato yea it was Friday the 13th
In the sequel you get to see "discount" Laurence Fishburne
"Hawaii! Airports! DEATH WISH!"
I died.
*OK boys, I've got a few comments here...*
*First of all, I am old. Really old. In fact, I was alive and in New York City at the time this movie was being made, and I wasn't even a kid!* Some of your dings were wrong...*
*In the 1970's, NYC was in the middle of a crime wave that made today's Chicago look like Kindergarten for criminals! Nowhere was this worse than on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (where I lived, and where Death Wish was shot, ... er... Filmed. At the peak of this crime wave, more than 200 people a DAY were being murdered. "Petty" crimes like armed assault ("muggings") were so frequent that the cops didn't bother to write reports on them most of the time. In fact, roughly 1/3rd of the buildings on the West Side has set up 24 hour internal Tenant Patrols - I was a member of the Tenant Patrol in my building. The police "trained" most patrol volunteers: the "training" consisted of about an hour of what you could and could not do if your confronted a criminal. Basically, NYC had the worst possible self-defense laws on the books (and probably still do, since it really IS a Bleeding-Heart "Liberal" haven. Under these grotesque laws, you could not use force - even if they bad guys were armed - unless you first tried to retreat, and in the attempt, found yourself unable to get away because you "ran out of retreating room" (i.e., you were literally cornered). The cops were very clear that if they had to come pick up a dead bad guy, it had better be in a place that supported this moronic law: the body damn well better be in the corner of a stairwell or something similar, or they would prosecute US just as if we were the bad guy! In the five years before our Tenant Patrol started, I was mugged at least two or three times a year, and my apartment was burgled at least once a year - no exaggeration. THIS is the setting for the movie, and once you understand just how bad it really was, the little dings like not removing the graffiti in the halls becomes un-dingable: it was truth!*
*All of the scenes where Kersey shoots bad guys were genuine hot-spots for extreme, senseless, violence. In fact, when the movie hit theaters, people were standing and applauding (not to mention screaming with joy!) at each of Kersey's killings. This even carried over into a huge surge in illegal gun ownership in this super antigun town: ten years later, on December 22, 1984, Bernie Goetz re-enacted a Kersey shooting dream in the subway, and the city was so ecstatic that they couldn't find a Grand Jury to indict him! By 1976, just about **_everyone_** over the age of 12 was carrying **_some_** kind of weapon. I myself was driving a cab (the year I started driving, 11 cabbies were murdered for their money), and carrying an old "1911" .45 cal pistol - and I kept it ON THE DASHBOARD, where everyone could see it, yet no cops ever seemed to notice it - the police were fully participating in the city's illegal armed resistance, and this was the backdrop for Death Wish.*
200 people a day seems like a huge exaggeration.
thank you for giving us the real background from a person that actually lived there back then. It is a common mistake we all do when in youtube, to accept opinions from people that had no clue what they are talking about, which is the case of the uploader - who seems that he was born a decade later than the decade the film is based on. And i ask this question: how a person that has no personal opinion, did not live in the NY in the 70s can have a solid opinion on how the film depicts the real life of NY ? Fail from the uploader side! At least do some research, ask opinions from people that lived back then before dinging your bells ;)
Were
Were you there ?
So how can us folks change the world for the better?
- 1 act of random kindness at a time, I suppose
Act of random kindness at a time - show mercy especially to those who have great difficulty defending themselves such as the frail elderly, mentally and / or, physically challenged and or, small innocent kids
As for the machine pistol : that's supposed to be a military issued firearm nevertheless, you still had the legal right to defend yourself - providing this story was actually true
You totally missed Lawrence - Hilton Jacobs from Welcome Back, Kotter as Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington.
AND Uncle Leo!!
....AND Maria from Sesame Street
.............and Police Chief Hubbard (Stephen Elliott) from Beverly Hills Cop (1984) - @8:08.

Brought to you by "death wish 2018" staring Bruce Willis in theaters this Friday
I'm cringing at the thought
Xenovista not literally
Fingerprints are actually hard to get, especially on something from the grocery story where multiple people would have handled them. Ever seen people going through the whole shelf full of product looking for the one with the latest expiration date?
Even if a usable print were found, it's unlikely they'd have Paul's prints to match against.
"I'm on my way to Emmit's fix it shop...to FIX Emmit"
The finger gun wink scene at the end is legendary....
Wouldn't it be cheaper and equally profitable for production companies to just re-release these movies in theaters than remake them
Too much of the movie would have to be edited out, for problematic themes, that we'd probably only be staring at the studio logo for most of the runtime.
my God is Yahweh it's not just about what is said, so you can't just dub over parts of it. Violence against women would need to be edited out, violence against people of color (which apparently includes speech), and you can't promote gun violence right now, so his revolver has to go, that's before you even consider how all the music is reminiscent of porn music.
Seriously, thats some bullshit. Why would you edit out things that belonged to that time? People who cant deal with that need to grow up and get out of their comfort zone. This isnt fucking disneyland
Or the angry conservative hypocrites
Tenebris Fractum tell that to the people who were happy twenty years ago, when all the guns were edited out of E.T. and Southpark later joked they would do the same to Indiana Jones.
So, yeah when you think about the hundreds of thousands of dollars it cost for a badly done mustache removal, and everything in this movie that would need to be removed or altered, it wouldn't make sense to rerelease it.
" now I'm going down to Emmett's Fix-It shop, to fix Emmett"
"What happened to the prisoner in cell 6?"
"I *shot him."*
"Oh..oh..y-yy-you WHAT?!"
"I *Shot him.* And Now I'm going down to Emmett's Fit-It Shop. To _fix Emmitt"._
Justin Widle...a true classic
Best. Line. Ever.
(Whistles Andy Griffith theme)
As someone who has been to a new york funeral, yes, I have been honked at *literally while at a funeral*
How dare you? Charles Bronson is in it. That means there's nothing wrong with it. Nothing at all.
Agreed.
Agreed Charles Bronson is the man
This
He made some clunkers but with him in they are Classics!
1974 in America was something. Muggers, weird blood, switchblade rebellion and male vigilante police cover-up. Oh, my!
Weird blood???
Isn't the made reason they made the warriors
queendsheena1 what the hell does male have to do with it? Sheesh.
Actually, the violent crime rate in 1974 was significantly higher than it is now, not just in NYC but nationwide, this despite there being a lower population and a lot fewer guns on the street.
Kieran Lepley I'm anti sjw, but you sound like a text book racist bigot. Also 9:10 there was two black guys. Jeff Goldblum isn't 100 percent white either, he is Jewish or came from a Jewish family. Guess you haven't seen the movie or this video. If you're just trolling and don't mean what you say, then I got trolled.
It's not discount Jeff Goldblum, It IS Jeff Goldblum.
Doctor Mid-Nite thats what i thought it must be a joke. With all the studying he must do for these vidz he had to have seen that
That was the joke, hard to believe Goldblum's first role in a movie was a rapist who keeps using the word "cunt"
Doctor Mid-Nite Jeff Goldblum, back when he actually *was* discount.
Any movie with him, Vincent Gardenia and Stuart Margolin needs three sins removed.
Are you alright in the head?
"Im going down to emmets fix-it shop, to 'fix' emmet"
*Andy of Mayberry theme plays*
"Mom lemme have a cookie"... "No dice"..."dis ain't ova'
I used to live pretty close to Bronson, Missouri.
I know you love too make fun of movies, but this one is a masterpiece.
“Hell, I’m gonna remove a sin for it.”
Jeremy has officially broke down.
He has removed a sin at least a few times.
Charles McCoy Yes, but not with the, “Fuck it,” attitude here.
Everything Wrong with Pulp Fiction... WE'VE WAITED LONG ENOUGH!!!
The reason crime seems attracted to Paul is because he's purposefully putting himself in situations where someone may commit a crime against him as bait. Living in a crime ridden place he'd know where and what situations would likely get him targeted. In most of the scenes he's dealing with criminals he's alone in a secluded place where the criminal(s) think they have the advantage.
The sin about turning both lamps off with one switch is a rare Cinemasins sin. I grew up in many houses where the wiring from one switch was connected to multiple lamps, allowing you to turn off desk, side table, and ceiling lamps all with one flip.

Fun Fact: Charles Bronson was once in the Guinness Book of World Records as highest paid actor.
Cadillac Deville also actor with the smallest penis
And Steve Reeves was the highest-paid actor in Europe at _his_ peak - Which is just my way of saying "Guinness"....
Genesis...Gods Own Book of World Records
The Guinness Book of World Records is for beer drinkers, and I'm almost there...
Johnny Depp probably holds that record now I'd imagine
Discount Jeff Goldblum, that is bloody Jeff Goldblum
Scott Leeson Films in I guess you didn't get the joke
Even Jeff Goldblum had a discount phase.
Fair point he did
Scott Leeson Films yet you couldn't figure that out
That means they got him when he was really cheap but I think as this point they still could get him for pennies
Is it wrong that *THIS* CinemaSins makes me want to watch the movie again? And all the sequels... ;)
Watched this for the first time last night. I enjoyed the hell out of it.
*No dice on "Atomic Blonde" for next week, either? This ain't ovah....*
Jim B. Wow somebody else picked up asking. I stopped asking because I didnt seem to get support lol but yes do Atomic Blonde!
Matt Conklin Yeah I was watching it going Ding! Ding! Ding! in my head....
Jonathan Melia there are some moments that are worth a few sins off also
Matt Conklin Charlize Theron warns the curly brunette her life is in danger and what does she do that night? Wanders round her apartment wearing enormous headphones while wearing sexy underwear. Look behind you! Ding!
Matt Conklin Squeaky wheels get the grease! How do you think we finally got a CS for "The Bee Movie?" 😂😂😂

Love that Simpsons episode only because of that part. 😂😂😂
Just saw the remake. Excellent.
Can't wait for the *Everything Wrong With Death Wish 2018* video...
Came here cuz I just watched it on TV lol
Throughout the film series, the closest people in his orbit gets harmed and ends with the main villains dying gruesomely.
If Leonardo Di Caprio can get an Emmy for being mauled by a bear, then Stephen Elliot should get one for saying, "WEIRD."
Jay Blodget Leo won an Oscar not Emmy. The Emmys only recognizes television series, mini-series and television movies.
The ending was a work of art.
When that music started playing at 10:19 I had to hold in my laughter since I was watching this in the middle of the night, I know it was the 70's but I still wasn't expecting it.
Take 1 sin off for the umbrellas at the funeral. I know, trope or something but black is common at funerals and considered appropriate attire, you generally want an umbrella to match you outfit (or you used to), and black umbrellas are really common in general.
So you sinned ole Charles Bronson eh? Despicable.
Cadillac Deville Dis. Aint. Ovah.
Cadillac Deville Our Lord and savior Charles Bronson.
Proud white Male lmao
Cadillac Deville exactly! Charles Bronson is the man!
Remington870 User I know right? My grandmother was a huge. Bronson fan.
Cqn you do "The Warriors" next since your doing a 70s theme and all. LOL but seriously please do a Everything Wrong With "The Warriors".
That was a seriously retarded movie!
Sin Death Wish 9.
"I wish I was dead" *sigh*
you missed a perfect chance for the pun " quarter pounder " 4:47
Can you do *SPEED* next !!!?!! 😕
Surah Online I'm sure he could, but I'm not sure what the effects would be if he mixed it with the cocaine he is on to actually be able to watch all these boring movies.
Doing speed is illegal
That was not the name of the movie. The real name was " The bus that couldn't slow down"
"Speed" should not be touched by this guy. By the way, you should use quotation marks when using titles of books and movies
I wish someone would do a video on Everything Wrong with CinemaSins. It would probably be hours long.
“Calm down dear, it’s only a movie.”
Doubt many people will get the reference.
Death Wish is awesome. Charles Bronson = legend.
Everything Wrong with Justice League! It's out, make it your priority.
honestly I hope they wait for when Aquaman hits theaters to do EWW Justice League, but wouldn't be surprised if they did it sooner
The episode "Everything wrong with Justice League" would be watching the movie.
JOE knows
I haven't seen Thor Ragnarok. But if it is true. That only means that Thor is even worse than horse shit on top of pig shit.
JOE knows
Ok, I see. I am both a Marvel and a DC fan. I love them both equally. Your problem is that even though you recognize what you got is of lesser quality you stand by it. You said it yourself. That is a very mediocre mentality. I don't settle for mediocre. I expect better and I am not afraid to expres my disapproval of things I love done wrong. Marvel is far from perfect, but is much better than DC (speaking strictly about their cinematic universes).
JOE knows
You do realize we are talking about works of fiction, right? As in "They don't exist". If you are this loyal to things that don't really matter, then you are one sorry individual.
4:30 -- that mugger's hat. DING!
Random compliment directed at you.. Really like the vocabulary you use in your videos
Charles Bronson is perfection. How dare you, CinemaSins. How dare you.
Edit: I say this in jest. Everyone can just calm down.

Omg! I fucking loved "The Critic!" Too bad it didn't last long as its sibling creations, "The Simpsons" and "Futurama." Still a great show.
Better to let something like that end before the quality drops.
i totally dig your videos, man
@1:48 "Discount Jeff Goldblum" No. Actual Jeff Goldblum, 1st film role.
You should do a sin video on joshua and the promised land
Or Cargo the really bad Cars knock off
The sins would be at an even higher number than when he did Home Alone 2
No
Did you see Saberspark's video on this film?
You said just what I was thinking.
They skipped the whole scene where they attack his wife and daughter lol
Dawson Kaiser what's sad he never got the men who killed his wife. Movie came out 10 years before I was born. Watched it for the first time in 2007. Was a good movie for it's time

Kent Peterson Worse, he didn't seem to give that much thought!
Dawson Kaiser it’s a nasty rape scene in my opinion :(

I love these videos. The comments are SO funny. Thanks.
I still love that old school shot of the TV showing the news clip 💯😂
I hope that next weeks "something fantasy" is Eragon. Boy, they'll be tons of sins for that especially if he's read the book.

All movies I watched growing up that showed the dark, dirty side of city life made me never want to visit big cities, but especially New York and Chicago. It always seemed like everyone was trapped there, from the money grubbing wealthy to the homeless, neither had the power to leave.
Never been so broke that I couldn't leave town....
No sins in this movie its perfect!
Hilarious - some of your best work!
But in Hollywood, at one time the telephone system DID produce a dial tone when the other party hung up.
It's like Jeremy has never used a landline phone system before.
But the dial tone didn't come on the moment you hung up. THAT'S the sin.
Now that I think about it, the dial tone didn't even come on when someone hung up on you. You got a click, a long silence, and then you got a fast busy. So I guess neither of you ever used a landline before.
The dial tone took something like 30~60 seconds to come on. But Mr Beale is right, you putzes have clearly never used a landline.
Regardless, it is still a cinematic cliche.
In Mongolia and Russia telephone always produce a dial tone when the other party hung up. Right after

Didn't know Bronson was from Lithuania but he really seems european.
Like most actors, he took a stage name. His real surname was Buchinsky (Karolis Dionyzas Bučinskis).
Thanks Jack, we are proud of our heritage, not like western europeans who bend over to this idea of "multiculturalism" that's fucking up their countries.
The phrase "grief milk" really got me
Man, I was hoping you’d do The Godfather today in time for The Oscars!
He should have done a pedophile/sex offender movie in honor of the Oscars.
It's about time The Godfather and Shawshank Redemption were sinned, I'm looking forward to those 2 if he ever does them.
