It is now Dec. 15, 2922 and I just discovered your video lesson. I spent 1 1/2 hours learning this version and want to sincerely thank you for sharing this. I believe that my two young grandchildren will enjoy this very much!
Thank you very much. Great teacher I picked that up easy. Look forward to watching more of you. Banjo is by far the best instrument I've ever picked up. Never thought I would say that. So much fun.
Just bought my banjo last Saturday. My goal was to be able to play a Christmas song by Christmas. I just played jingle bells all the way through five days later!! Thank you, Thank you!!
Thanks so much! called my mom to play it and there was a carload of my family i did not know was there and all started singing along... you did a great job!
Thank you for this. A great little lesson. I've have only been playing for a short time, well a matter of months to be truthful and i find your lessons extremely helpful. Once again thank you.
I only have had my banjo for 1 1/2 weeks and can get thru this song, not perfectly "yet", but that's why its called "practice". Think you might "add"-Dashing Thru The Snow, etc?Thank you very much Chris for this video. Sure hope you post more beginner lessons like this one. Great teacher! Thanks again .
ok got it,,,,thx.well practice will make perfect but you did a good job of chunking it.breaking it into pieces and showing they get sewn together.i am a beginner of the rank degree and i heard ned lubarecki on sirius radio, the bluegrass channel showcase this song on sunday in his on air lessons.he said find the melody and fill it in with forward rolls.so i searched on line and found your lesson.it was good and youre good at teaching Keep up the good work,sister....
I have been working on forward/backwards finger rolls. I mostly play 2 finger picking method. I like to Scruggs pick, and your lesson taught me more than I have seen. Nice slow easy for us beginners. Thanks! If you have any 2 finger vids, could you share those too?
I don't have any 2-finger tabs or videos, but I do have other very simple 3-finger tabs. I'll try to post something. Send an email to The Bluegrass Shack in New Athens, IL and I can forward you some tabs and mp3's.
mannn, again, you make it look so easy....I think if I start now, its Feburary, I may have part of this song down by December...grin....I'm gonna try anyway.. Thanks for taking the time to break it all down..... oh and ah... keep smilin, olehippy13 former vietnam medic novice banjo picker lifelong falcon fan
yeah great video for, like you say rank beginners in which i am a certified member. However its Canada, getting cold out,im in a cabin with a fire going and I got an hour to nail this.Thx for posting.Keep on picking and grinning.....
I always use an acoustic banjo. Banjos are prob the loudest of all the acoustic instruments. You need to 1st decide what kind of music you want to play, and then you'll know what kind of banjo to get. There are several different styles of music that work well on a 5-string: clawhammer (Grandpa Jones); bluegrass traditional and melodic (Earl Scruggs, Alan Munde); and jazz, classical and beyond (Bela Fleck). There are many more I didn't mention. 4-string is generally for dixieland and strumming.
Well, you can get an Irish Tenor banjo, which is a 4-string banjo with 17 frets. (Regular tenor has 19 frets.) You can also play Irish music on a 5-string. Since I don't play Irish music on the banjo except for the occasional tune, I don't know that I can answer this question with solid knowledge. Try doing a search on Irish banjo music and see what you come up with.
That was wonderful and ridiculously easy...good work and I love your smiles, makes me feel comfortable as I stumble through this :) Thank you for the post. Got any more??
Hi found this quit easy to learn the way you explained it only been playing a couple of months and was wondering if there is a easy way to play hobos lulaby thanks
Thank you Chris, My family bought me a banjo for my birthday last week, and yours is my first ever full tune. Can't wait for Xmas to play it to the rest of the family. Thank you. (Have you got any more tunes)? You are a good teacher.
Please note this is a very simplified answer, as I don't have the space to go into more detail. Look up the names of the banjo players I mentioned if you aren't familiar with the styles. That will help you hear what the different styles sound like and will help you make your decision. Talk to other banjo players, too. Good luck!
I am going to start working on this tomorrow, since I already know the chords required. I just wish it was written out, because I function better having something written to refer to. ( Mel Bay Banjo book is the only reason i've progressed to "Bile them Cabbage Down")
Do you use an electric banjo or just an acoustic? I'm thinking about buying a banjo, but am unshure about the type (electric/not electric, 5 strings/4 strings)...
A pinch is when you play two or three strings at the same time. In this case, the pinch is playing the 1st and 2nd strings at the same time with your index and middle fingers.

I just got a banjo for Christmas, so I decided that the first tune I learn on it should be a Christmas song. This video really helps! Thank you!

@harryfaquad I have a number of other videos, but I think only one more Christmas video for banjo. It's Silent Night. I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
THANKS CHRIS I GOT IT
Thank you so much!
@ThriftShopperNC If you need a tab version, just get out a piece of tab paper and write it down so you can look at it!
Do you use an electric banjo or just an acoustic?
I'm thinking about buying a banjo, but am unshure about the type (electric/not electric, 5 strings/4 strings)...
👍
verry good
I know it's a little late for this but I'm still gonna learn it
FYI I love your nice smile Chris!
Ok thank you :D
just one more thing: wich one would be more suitable for irish music? 5 or 4? or neither?
4 string Tenor Banjo (11 years late, sorry!)
Please explain what you mean when you say pinch on that c chord. Thanks Tom
