Bought my Ibanez in 1973, had two different instructors at a music store and had no good results. It’s been collecting dust for 40+ years and I saw your video last week. Your enthusiasm comes right out of the screen and I really liked your slow, methodical yet confident teaching style. Am practicing like crazy and LOVE IT!! I sound just average but in the back of my mind I know that if I keep enjoying practice...it will become easier. I just shut my eyes and don’t look down at those strings and practice. My fingers are slowly beginning to memorize where to go, it is just simple muscle memory. Thank you for breaking things down to SIMPLE, that was what I needed. Jim in Seattle

    Hi Jim,
Like many of your followers, I also come from a guitar background. My Dad bought a banjo at a police auction (otherwise known as stolen but not claimed), almost 20 years ago, and it hasn't seen a great deal of use (sorry Dad). But I've picked it up and started to play it, and really like your posts. With a guitar background, I'm fine with the slides, hammer-on, etc, but do find myself struggling with the rolls as instead of thumb then fingers, it's thumbs, a couple of fingers, thumb again. But I'm sure I'll get there.
Thanks for your investment in this, your teaching style is fantastic.
One day I may get my guitar, you get your banjo, and we can re-create Deliverance.
    Cheers,
    Clayton.

I've never really played an instrument (other than horrible organ lessons I was forced to take as a child) then I bought a banjo on impulse, because I think they are happy sounding. It has collected dust for three years, other than the first few notes of "duelling banjos" I used to impress my family, not! I'm in week three and I'm kind of getting it, because you go slowly enough for my little pea brain and there is lots of repetition and building up. I love how you lean right into the camera too! Thanks for being a great teacher (P.S. I have been a teacher for 30 years myself, so I really appreciate it!)

Work has been driving me nuts so I needed a break from sitting in front of a computer and that I needed to get a new hobby. In a moment where I'm still convinced I lost my mind I started driving to the music shop, promising myself that if this banjo I had been eyeing was still there I'd pick it up. Sure enough, it was. I saved up and bought it without much of a plan on how to learn to play. I did piano lessons as a kid but could never get the grasp of them. Your lessons have been a godsend. Very easy to follow, makes this whole learning an instrument business less intimidating, and this gives me something to do to unwind while not just sitting around and letting Netflix or whatnot melt my brain. I'm learning something. Thank you for providing these lessons, I'll keep in keeping on with the practicing!!

I was in the mindset of wishing I could play a banjo but sceptical of buying one incase I gave up and wasted it.
Then I found your lesson series and watched them attentively and discovered that Cripple Creek is the same tune as the one I listen to while working 😃

Hi Jim, don't laugh!!!! I went to a friend's yesterday who has been practicing the banjo for four years & immediately he said I was not picking right (not clawing under with my picks but I was hooking the strings side on) & I wasn't holding my hand & shoulder right. Straight away my learning went back to the start of lesson one....I felt like I had learned with one side of the brain and was now having to use the other side! I felt defeated, but he sent me home with a few forward rolls to practice & I have mastered them without having to think about what I am doing (honestly)...so I went onto your roll again and I have to say I am playing & feeling it so much easier now than what I was doing! Anyway the good news is my version of Cripple Creek sounds like yours (maybe just a wee slower as making sure my slide & hammer on sound clear). I am just practicing it now, over and over again & will be soon at your lesson 4 :-)

Mr Pankey, My parents gave me a 5 string banjo when I was in my early teens because I expressed an interest in learning to play one. They didn't have a lot of money so they could not afford lessons so they bought a beginners book. Unfortunately I can learn from books (just doesn't work for me), after messing around with it for a couple of months and getting nowhere (never learned to even play the simplest of rolls) , I put the banjo in my closet and walked away telling myself that I wasn't talented enough to learn this instrument. Since that time and over the following years I have had fleeting thoughts of giving it another try and talked myself out of it every time. I am now 62 year old, that was 48 years ago, a couple of months ago I watched your lesson 1 video and decided to try it again. My wife found me a Recording King Madison RK-R35, I ordered the things I thought I needed to start this journey again. After setting up my new banjo I started with lesson 1. That was on Valentines Day (February 14th) which we now call Banjo Day! I am now on Lesson 3 and am able to play through the complete lesson of Lesson 3. While it is certainly not perfect, I can play through it 3+ time before my brain goes...ugh...LOL. However this is not deterring me, I practice 30 minutes in the morning before I start my day and 30 minutes in the evening before I end my day (everyday...so far). I am already light years ahead of where I was at 14 and I am LOVING this so much. THANK YOU Mr. Pankey, you have helped me to realize that you are never too old and that yes even I can play a 5 String Banjo. I will continue with this lesson series and have no doubts now that I will continue to learn and grow my skills with an instrument that has been a life long (before now an unrealize) passion.

Jim - I am a 46 year old self taught guitar player who started learning at the age of 18. I mainly play acoustic and got intimate gigs along with busking for many years. In 2010 I formed a classic rock band with my mates and learnt the bass as we had no bass player - I am now the bass player and lead vocalist in the band and again, we have gigged all over Ireland raising money for charity. The reason for this lengthy introduction is to let you know that somewhere along the line, other than with the band, I had lost a bit of love for my music somehow and I hadn't picked up my acoustic guitar for over 18 months.
For the last 3 years, on every New Year's Eve I said to my wife that for this coming year, I want to learn to play the banjo (I have always loved the sound). I have consistently failed to do this (I didn't even have one) until this year and last week when I got my first banjo and found your lessons. I have been playing for a little over a week and sticking with your lessons, I have re-gained my love of music and every time I pick it up, I am playing with a smile on my face. I have made very quick progress thanks to your lessons.
What I was not prepared for was the positive psychological effect this has had very quickly in other unrelated areas of my life. I somehow feel lighter, less stressed out and a lot happier in general - it's uncanny and has caught me by surprise! I can't thank you enough and as someone who also does tutorial videos on RUclips trying to help others, I know how nice it is to read comments like this from time to time from around the world so thank you once again my friend - you have no idea!!
Much love and warm best wishes for 2019 to you and your family from Ireland.

As a guitar player, I find I'm having to learn some new habits, and break some old ones, but the process has been extremely fun. I've been playing banjo for years but I'm just enjoying watching your videos. Been playing on an old beat up thing that was in pieces until I fixed it up years ago. You can try to polish a turd but you'll end up with a smell on your hands that don't wash out too good. I'm waiting on a new banjo to be delivered this week and I'm looking forward to following along with your Lesson videos to fix up some problems with the fundamentals in my form. All the best to you. I'm loving these lessons! I'm a complete beginner who got my first banjo three days ago, and I'm learning as fast as my blistered "social finger" will allow. I really appreciate that you start out with a few interesting things that actually sound like real music, rather than just teaching a bunch of sad, boring chords. I've tried to learn to play other instruments before, but I've never felt so confident that if I work hard and practice I might be able to play music for and with friends.

I'm now at lesson 3, will spend a little time on it to cement it in, but can already feel it coming together easier than lesson 1+2 having spent a number of days with them. Being new to banjo having started your lessons on 19th May 2021 I think they are great, and even after having several days off being away on a course my playing on my return hasn't suffered thankfully. Aiming to get 1hr practice per day, usually split into 20min segments. So far so good although still very early days, thanks again Jim 👍

Glad someone is doing this I grew up on Bluegrass being raised by my Grandfather, HeeHaw was a show he never missed; I wish I could have come along a bit earlier in his lifetime though. His family was all about music, they all played multiple instruments; and they all sang on the front porch in the evening. Apparently his kid's didn't have the love of music, and other than myself the music has died; and I'm determined to learn at least one instrument.

Time for lesson 3! I'm so excited!!! EDIT: 30 minutes later I'm already playing the lesson!!! I love the way these lessons build on each other and are going straight to a song. That's so much more motivating that running chords forever! I play other instruments (piano, clarinet, ukulele) and I have always learned fastest and had the most fun when I'm immediately working on a song. You pick up the skills as you go, and they'll translate to other pieces too, but that immediate payout of less than a week's worth of practice getting me able to play the beginning of a song is awesome!! I LOVE these lessons, thank you so much!!!
