Revisiting this because I've been thinking recently, about a Father's contribution to our Homes. They do the heavy lifting & the manly tasks. Missing our Dad & thankful for the men in our Lives. 🙏for your Dad...
I have my grandmother's copy of Anne of Green Gables from 1915. She was raised on a farm in Prince Edward Island, a relatively short drive from here. She taught in a one-room school in the 1920's. She and her elder sister were both working at the time and had four younger siblings. One day their father decided he wanted to buy his first car. Since he couldn't afford it himself, he told the girls that each of them would pay half. They were not pleased as one would imagine, but they obeyed. One day, when her father wasn't home, my grandmother decided she would learn to drive that car. Her sister said something to the effect of, "But Catherine! What if Papa catches you?!" and when he did he had no defense. Not many women could drive at the time, and because she could, she went on to work for the Red Cross, traveling all around the Maritime provinces, and that is how she met my grandfather. It's a Romans 8:28 type of story that I absolutely love.
I’m 40 years old this year…and to this day, I still love Anne of Green Gables! I read it again last Spring and I plan to read it again soon. The literature is so beautifully written, and Anne is one of my all-time favorite characters. 🥰
I love classic literature. So many little bits of gold! Growing up, my home was not a safe place for me. That’s why I value my home today. I love that it’s an oasis from the crazy world we love in. Filled with the things my husband and I love. I treat myself often with fresh flowers and beautiful art. Thanks for another great video, Jennifer💕
I'm a great grandmother. My middle name is Anne with an "e." I have a stack of Anne's books on the table in front of the window. Thank you for the new look into these books!
I loved this! Anne is a friend to me. When I was a teen, and later as a new bride, I would listen to "Anne of Green Gables", "Anne of Avonlea", and "Anne of the Island" on audio tape while I did chores. I got to the point where I had entire sections memorized, lol. Anne was my companion during those early idyllic years. Thanks for a great video, can't wait to hear the secrets from the other books!
“She made the table such a thing of beauty” how I loved this! I wonder why it is that these details are considered a waste of time, or frivolous when they bring such a joy to our senses 💕 thank you Jennifer for this beautiful series, it is truly a treat and brings beauty into my life.
I've always thought a part of Marilla taking the housekeeping so far is because she didn't have anyone but Matthew - and she was working through her emotions of that as she accepted Anne into her heart. I love the books.
Jennifer, I have 2 master's degrees in children's literature, and I congratulate you on finding a new topic of discussion in children's lit, one that I never heard addressed in graduate classes, with regard to the Anne series, or actually, any such literature. One thing I would add to your analysis is a salient reason for such adherence to homemaking. Those were days of sustainability living. Clothing and household articles were made to last, sometimes for generations. Things took time to make and to save for. They were not easily replaceable. They had value from a physical and sentimental value. (Such as the pearls Anne received from Matthew Cuthbert).
As a single woman who lives solo, I find these videos about comfort and homemaking so helpful, as I am the only one who can bring comfort not only to me but my friends as well.
I love the book and the show with Megan Follows & Colleen Dewhurst. My mom and I would watch that movie together when she was alive. It brings back so many wonderful memories. 🥺🥰 I have always wanted to live on Prince Edward Island.
Yes I also love the movies with Megan Follows! I have watched it so many times!😊 Wonderful memories for me as well. PEI is beautiful! I have visited the green gables house. Are you Canadian Cathy?
@@maryscountrykitchen9677 no I’m not Canadian, I Live in the US. But I have cousins that lives in Canada. I would love to go back to Canada for a visit and see my family but, the way the world is today I’m a little hesitant about it. 😬 Maybe someday in the future if things gets better I might take a trip there. 🙂
This is my favorite homemaking series! Also, the way your hair sits in this video gives a glimpse of what you’d look like with a long bob- it would be cute on you if you ever wanted to shake things up!
Yes, testing things before serving them is key!! A few weeks ago I had the new pastor’s wife and her kids over for a play date and coffee. I accidentally made her a latte using slightly soured milk!! And here I was feeling a bit miffed that she didn’t finish the whole cup 😂…. I learned at my next coffee break why that was.
Thank you for the nostalgic dip back into Anne of Green Gables. Many of the books written at this time exalt homemaking, in sad contrast to current attitudes. I may have to reread this series!
Oh Jennifer. Lovely in every way. Thank you!! As a grandmother this is particularly important to me. I want my grandchildren to have loving and joyful memories of time at our home. I tried to create the same feelings when my family was young. You have articulated it so nicely. Yes. Please more videos like this. Thank you.
So good to see someone do a video on this! As a homeschooler, I love classic literature as well, but AOGG is my absolute favorite and I actually live in Prince Edward Island. I have often thought about Lucy's examples of good housekeeping in her works. Yes, Anne was overly imaginative and flighty as a girl but she still grew up to be a wonderfully kind mother, and good homemaker.
I just adore this series! The Homemaking wisdom in these books has been slowly lost over time. It’s been a blessing to watch these videos and learn trade secrets of old. ❤️🥰
Hi Jennifer, These thoughts are excellent! Taste before serving: as a young bride, I sent scallop potatoes with ham to my sister-in-law after having her seventh baby; apparently the onions were so strong they could not taste the potatoes or ham! 😂 Oops! Laughter is a good medicine. Julie 🌷
In one of the later books, I think it's Mrs Lynde who looks in Anne's garbage. 😂 She brags that Anne has no waste- she uses every last bit of her food.
I grew up in Prince Edward Island. As a child I loved to visit the Anne of Green Gables historic home. It was an annual summer tradition that I looked forward to each year, and, I believe it led to my love for historic fiction. If you ever travel to Atlantic Canada, it would be a wonderful day trip for you and your family.
Jennifer, your Homemaking Secrets series is my absolute favourite! I love the Anne books, and still have the treasured paperback set that my parents gave me over 30 years ago on my bookshelf today.💝
I’ve always loved Anne of Avonlea A Golden Picnic picnic foods that Anne, Diana, Prissy and Jane made together. It always seemed so elegant and whimsical to me when I was younger. 🥰
I was talking to my niece about finishing school yesterday. "I had no idea there were still Finishing Schools!" Sadly, no. 😂 But I got to thinking while watching your video, this is like Finishing School. Isn't it? It's nice!
Thank you for another lovely video, Jennifer! This is why I love old fiction books. They are treasure chests of homemaking tips and inspire me that I don't need to neglect my home just because I live in 2022. I have also started blogging about homemaking tips I learn from books I read.
I loved the "secret" -Look on the bright side- "there's more scope for the imagination". I live in a very rural area with a dog, cat and rancher husband going in and out of the house. Dust from the wood stove and air. The furniture is covered with blankets to keep them clean. I sit in my chair in the morning and imagine what it would be like with nicer furniture and a pretty rug. Going to town is a 40 minute drive but we sight -see all the way and appreciate the beauty God has given us. I read the book when I was about 13. I think I need to read it again. I'm looking forward to the next video.
Never read it, but my Granddaughter (13) and I loved Anne with an E on Netflix and were so disappointed that there's not going to be a Season 4, that I now purchased the book to read the rest of the story. I'm hoping my Granddaughters will read it also.
I love the Ann of Green Gables books! This was a great video about homemaking lessons learned. It makes me think of planning a trip to Prince Edward Island. I have always dreamed of going there and see the place the books were inspired.
I told my son the story of the linament cake the other day. My story's conclusion was "go ahead and lick your fingers when you get cake batter on them," after all, as Julia Child says, "you're the only one in the kitchen!" As fans of _Anne of Green Gables_ may recall, Anne had a cold and couldn't smell the linamemnt, but she'd have tasted it! I love this series. I remember every book you've featured so far, and it's been great!
Love this, Jen. Another book to read again. I love “work done first” and play. When I was a stay at home mother, I would plan my day every day with the goal to be done with cleaning by noon, so I could spend time with my children with late afternoons used for sewing and baking toward the end of the daytime before dinner time. Tasting before the food is served, is great advice. As a young mother many years ago, a good friend of my husband’s came to visit us. I made a nice dinner with an apple cake for dessert. I completely forgot to add sugar to the cake! What a surprise and embarrassing moment when the taking the first bite. A whole new meaning to a meal never forgotten. Thank you for this series. Great content. I have 5 granddaughters and this has given me the idea to buy them each their own Ann of Green Gables book for Christmas next year.
I agree with all of your commentary. Looking on the bright side and not coveting or causing coveting is so important. I just love your channel. Thankyou for sharing your heart with us.
Marilla is my idol. I loved all these series you went through, even a reference to Poirot in one video. Thank you for the fun videos, memories of childhood books with adult lessons in them.
I remember that when I first read Anne of Green Gables, what struck me concerning homemaking was learning to cook things without a recipe, or rather, having the recipes memorized for all the things you might cook often.
Aww this is amazing. Its my favourite series ever. I purchased the full collection in the 80's have watched it many times. Was devastated when Jonathan Crombie passed away 😢 💔
I was so excited when I saw this video in my notifications! Anne of Green Gables is my absolute favorite book of all time. Thank you for this wonderful video.
Wonderful thought that we all strive to be notable homemakers. I transcribed the word notable to noble at first glance, and I then thought, yes, we should strive to be both....
I read anne of green gables when I was a teenager.. I love it so much I named my daughter anne shirley.. I wish I could visit prince edward,. Always been my dream ever since I read anne of green gables,..
I love the Anne series ❤️ An interesting addition to the Anne books is a novel called Marilla of Green Gables by Sarah McCoy. This was written more recently and is another authors take on a young Marilla and what life events may have shaped her character. It’s a light but touching read!
Good afternoon Jennifer. I’m in the U.K. and have finally finished reading ‘Anne of Green Gables’. It’s not that it took me long to read, but I borrowed it via my library who had to send for it from another library branch. Furthermore, it wasn’t easy as it was very much in demand; and others were waiting for it after me….I wonder if all the others are following your good self? I found it a fascinating book; even though I have seen the TV series with my eldest daughter when she was 11 years old…she will soon be 49. Bless her. I also very much appreciate you picking out the ‘home tips’ that are still relevant to this day. In fact, I mentioned your findings to the librarian and her response was…”Now that’s a lady who actually reads a book”. Very well done to you from the U.K. As I wait for the follow on books to arrive, I am now reading ‘Postcards from the Past’ by Marcia Willett. A story about a ‘Brother and Sister’ who are living a quiet life in Cornwall, when they start receiving postcards from someone in their past….thus the mystery starts… Why after all these years!? Thank you Jennifer, you have certainly re triggered my interest in reading and by visiting my library, I am also making new friends.
Hi Jennifer. Watching this as I have taken a few knocks these past weeks. I did not grow up with any exposure to childrens books as english was a second language ..I now read things as an adult and am writing stories too. Iv always been a home body and my goal is to have my own home with a good husband and children..to beable to write and enjoy a peaceful life. I lit up at reading Home is a consciousness..just made me tear up because I didn't expect to find that here ..what I call the 'mind' I feel less alone at this moment. Thank you for uplifting my spirits and connecting me to this beautiful idea. Li A
I share your dilemma with wanting to do work before play, yet the work never seems to end! Sometimes I just have to make a conscious choice to take a full day, or even a weekend, to relax. I'd love to see future videos on the strategies you've found helpful to balance working and resting.
Yay, I have been hoping you would do a video on this one! You should read the whole series - when Anne grows up and runs her own home, she is such a better homemaker than Marilla or Mrs. Lynde. She learns their habits of industry and neatness but also has a flourishing and beautiful home.
I had a 4th of July luncheon one time and had made some lemonade from a mix. I noticed the couple I served it to just had a few sips of their glass. (I had iced tea.) The next day, my son came over and poured himself some lemonade. He promptly spit it out and said, "MOM, you forgot to put sugar in it!" I was mortified, but also amused that they never said a word!
Enjoyed this - and it made me even more eager to read Anne of Green Gables to my daughters! :) Your last point struck me particularly, because we recently moved and I've noticed that I have a "consciousness" of the area around our home, which affects how I feel inside our home. Sometimes I feel as if I should be able to shut out my perception of the neighborhood/town around me and focus only on the atmosphere inside our home, but your reading about Anne's consciousness of what was outside her home and how it affected the overall way she felt about "home" made me realize that my current feelings are completely valid. ;)
I love the Anne books! Thank you for sharing your insights with us, Jennifer! I was laughing as you read the different parts. I will take to heart these homemaking lessons.
Labeling things properly is so important. I make it a point not to put non-food items into food containers. It’s just safer. My husband drank kerosene when he was a very young child because it was in a Mason jar. Needless to say, he was quite ill. I just love this series on Homemaking.
Have you seen the remake of Anne of Green Gables called “Anne with an E”. I loved the young actress who played Anne. Murilla’s kitchen was gorgeous in the movie.
I love Anne! There is so much to learn from this series. I enjoy gleaning ideas from other peoples homes. I dont covet what they have, but its the energy, the vibe that I seek to replicate.
Excellent points! I agree with your #10. When we head home after vacation or a day trip, we look forward to the comfort of our home. I am looking forward to your next video in which you gather homemaking secrets. Thanks for sharing.
I like how you added about covetousness and being contented. It is a very difficult thing to remember and we need to be reminded often. You should think about doing a video on flowers in your home. Especially orchids, you have beautiful orchids. I have one, but cannot get it to look so splendid. Lol Think about giving us some tips. 😉
Hi Jennifer, This series is so fun. I love hearing about all the homemaking secrets from classic literature. Anne of Green Gables are a wonderful series of books. Thanks so much for posting this video. I hope you have a wonderful week! xo, Karen
Hi Jennifer 💕 indeed I enjoyed this video a lot, so much that I started watching Anne of Green Gable. I started around 1:00 pm and stopped at 10:00. Tomorrow I will continue to watch this magnificent series. Thank you for sharing 🥰💕
Jennifer, how do you manage to extract the most interesting facts from the classics! I just loved the homemaking truths you emphasized! Thank you for sharing.
I just loved this! I re-read Anne of Green Gables last year and I was reminded of how humorous it was! And as you said, it does have numerous lovely descriptions of the house or Anne’s room or the flora and fauna of the countryside. Such a great book. I love how you relate it to home making today.
I enjoyed your video so much. It reminded me of my eldest daughter who adored the TV series we watched together. Yet, I had never read the book. So the other day, I went to the library and borrowed the book. Your reviews on children’s books are superb, and encourages me certainly to re-read or even first time read; books that I had never heard of or had the chance to read as a young girl. Thank you so very much.
I told a Dutch friend how much I admire Dutch homemaking, I’m part Dutch myself (my grandfather was from the North Polder region). She said they get carried away, though, for example, they wash every window daily. I’m lucky if I get the exteriors of mine washed annually (I’m not allowed to use ladder, and don’t think I could if I would).
I loved today's video, it made me nostalgic of the beautiful homes of my childhood, in Panama and Costa Rica. Not only my parents', but also those of aunts and friends.
One of my Favorite childhood reads! This was so nostalgic hearing excerpts from the story. I'm going to have to ponder that last tip, that the home is a consciousness - very true, I never thought about it that way. Thanks for a great video!
Wow that last one truly is a gem! Thank you for sharing! I love Anne’s imagination and poetic thought process! I am so excited to see the rest of these videos! I especially love Anne at windy poplars!🥰
So excited to see you go through the rest of the books! I thrifted a stunning Anne of green gables series that is decorative and I can’t wait to read through them. I read Anne of green gables as a girl but never read the rest.
This is too weird! I’ve been having the worst time finding newer novels that are clean and excellent at the same time. I got so frustrated that this morning I downloaded Anne of GG on my Kindle, which I read while homeschooling my oldest daughter, and Loved it!. I thought I’d quickly read the first chapter and 7 chapters later my husband came looking for me. I downloaded the entire series! We’ll see if I make it to the end. Can’t wait to watch this video!!!! I was highlighting cool stuff Anne says and the great advice Marilla gives. We are on the same wavelength (or should I say, “We are on the same page!”)Lol
Can’t wait to be reminded of Susan Bakers housekeeping tips sometime in this series. I think my favorite one is from “Rilla of ingleside” to “always have something special in the pantry”. When Jem comes home, he didn’t tell anyone that he was coming so she didn’t have a proper meal made and had only leftovers to serve, but she had a treat tucked away in the cupboard which she pulled out to serve as a celebration of his safe homecoming.
That reminds me of when my brother came to visit last year. He flew in late and no good restaurants were open and I really was too tired to cook, but I happened to have several interesting kinds of cheese in the fridge, and my brother made a feast of cheese and crackers.
'listened to this with my daughter,Jennifer. She's 12.We love it.We love Anne and Gilbert :-) :-) and Marilla of course :-) ..and Matthew is such a wonderful soul.
This is soooo funny, because when I watched the Netflix show Anne with an E I thought to myself "Jennifer will certainly make a video on Anne of green gables someday" because of the homemaking of Marilla and the way she educated Anne, it looked very much like something you would discuss 😊
Dear Jennifer, I've been following your videos for a year now and they keep giving me so much inspiration and positive energy for my own homemaking. I've been eagerly waiting for you to make one on Anne of Green Gables as it is an all time favourite of mine. Thank you so much for brightening up my day and I look forward to more! x
I absolutely love your book series! It's amazing what tips you find and I have found a new appreciation for books that have been my absolute favorites for years. It's so lovely to be able to look at these books from a new perspective. My favorite homemaking secret was the same as yours, Home is a consciousness. It's always been one of my favorite parts of the book!

I know... He was Gilbert Blythe incarnate.
@@TheDailyConnoisseur he was so handsome and too young very sad 😔 ❤️
That last point was so important. I'm so excited to create this for my family
I was so excited when I saw this video in my notifications! Anne of Green Gables is my absolute favorite book of all time. Thank you for this wonderful video.
One of my favorite childhood story ❤
The Canadian miniseries with Megan Follows was also outstanding!
I have been listening to the audiobooks of these since spring started. I love the books.
I love this series - thank you for your extraordinary ability to extrapolate on the deeper meaning of things that, at first glance, seem simple.
I love when you make these videos. I love classic children's literature.
I have always love Anne of Green Gables and my oldest is FINALLY old enough to appreciate it now too! 😊
Thank you for your insights!
Everytime this book puts me into different universe.
Jennifer, how do you manage to extract the most interesting facts from the classics! I just loved the homemaking truths you emphasized! Thank you for sharing.
Don't get your friends drunk was my take home message as a young girl!
Love this...getting ready to re-read Anne of Green Gables as I will be visiting Green Gables in October !
Thank you so very much.
love this!!! i am constantly reminding my daughter to hang up her clothes immediately..... its a struggle...
I was eager for the next "Homemaking Secrets from..." video. Now I´m excited to read the book I never got to finish. Lovely video, Jennifer 💓
My goodness how much I loved Anne of Green Gables.Beautiful ...
I just love Anne of Green Gables! Thanks for sharing!
One of my Favorite childhood reads! This was so nostalgic hearing excerpts from the story. I'm going to have to ponder that last tip, that the home is a consciousness - very true, I never thought about it that way. Thanks for a great video!
Love this trip down memory lane.
Literally my favorite series!! Love the video and I haven’t even read it yet!!
As we moved often, home was the people and memories made, not just a building.
So funny, Teri! We are on the same page! Haha
I love watching your videos, they just have this relaxing vibe :) thank you so much✨
Can’t wait to be reminded of Susan Bakers housekeeping tips sometime in this series.
I found the Netflix version of it was very far off from the original. Or is it just me?
I love when you do these, I also get tips from classic books!
Dear Jennifer, I've been following your videos for a year now and they keep giving me so much inspiration and positive energy for my own homemaking. I've been eagerly waiting for you to make one on Anne of Green Gables as it is an all time favourite of mine. Thank you so much for brightening up my day and I look forward to more! x
Thank you for this video. What a blessing! I read all of the Anne books last year, and they are a delight!
Wonderful fun reminders. I liked that Home is a consciousness
Love your videos Jennifer! So calming and educational, guiding us to live lovely lives 💜💕🏡
Oh my goodness absolutely loved this video. My mom read to us every night Anne of Green Gables. Brought back so many childhood memories. Thanks.
A true Canadian gem! Thank you!
I have also been read the "Anne" series. Such a fun set.
My all time favorite book series. I have cherished memories of my late mother connected with Anne. I love the book's inspiration.
I will powder the last tip for the rest of the week, for sure. Great advice. Thank you for the insightful video.
This was so delightful Jennifer! Thank you. I agree, “Home truly is a Conciousness”.
