What can Australia teach us about mass shootings?

- In 1996, just 12 days after 35 people were killed in a mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, the government of Australia enacted strict gun control legislation, including a ban on the sale and import of all automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and a gun buyback program. Since then, there have been only one mass shooting in Australia, and gun homicides decreased nearly 60 percent. Correspondent Seth Doane talks with Australian politicians, and with a victim and gunowner, about the sweeping changes. (A previous version of this story was broadcast on March 13, 2016.)

Yes Taylor, I so agree!
There is free counseling in most communities. People with violent tendencies go to great lengths to keep it a secret and protect that part of themselves from prying eyes.
Better idea. Pass Medicare for All, which 70% of Americans desperately want and will save the country between $1-$3 trillion dollars over a 10 year period, saving 3.5% the first year. According to 22 separate research studies. Plus we’re one of the only countries in the world without some type of universal coverage.
FREE? oh you mean those of us who don't have a mental problem should be paid for those who do... what a brilliant Idea - said no one. here's an Idea - how about I pay for my own families BS & you pay for yours - dang dudette equality is not about equal results in life - equality is about the equal chance for self-improvement, it's not about I'm going to pay for your college because you cannot afford it - where is the "equality" in that BS? how about those who cannot afford a vehicle along with all the insurance, etc that comes along with the responsibility of owning one? are you going to buy one for them? after all isn't that your Idea of "equality"? Parents are who should NOTICE the signs of "Misbehaviour " 1st & if/when they fail their own children you want everyone else to step up & pay the cost so what happens when/if that BS fails? who repays that cost? the child/adult has to be the 1 person who wants to change & mental Illness is not easily cured & besides "mental institutions" are a thing of the past - gun reform? don't like 1 don't buy 1 but good luck when you need to call someone who has 1 & they're minutes away -

There's one gigantic difference between Australia and the U.S. though: the ocean. Australia is surrounded by water, the U.S. is not. From Mexico on down through Central and South America, illegal weapons are rampant, and so you can ban literally all sales of guns in the U.S. but the cartels will still get them over the boarder and into the hands of criminals here. Australia doesn't have that problem.
Boats exist silly. Further, most of those illegal weapons come from the USA
No such thing as common sense bro😑
Actually, our lax gun laws are what contributes to illegal weapons reaching criminals. For instance, cartels are able to traffic guns back to Mexico because of it.

And yet another shooting still happened in Australia. Gun control does not help prevent mass shootings it just makes killing a little bit more difficult. Going off of this videos numbers you have a 1 in 800,000 chance of dieing in a mass shooting in Australia, and a 1 in 700,000 chance of dieing in a mass shooting in America. (I used the population counts for both countries divided by the number of mass shootings in each as per the video (110 for America and 3 for Australia) and used an average of 5 deaths per shooting in America and 10 in Australia) gun control is not made to help protect you, it is made to help protect the power of those who made the gun control.
COMPARE THE NUMBERS! Ban guns from US
The problem is that disarming a nation doesn't solve the crime problem. If democrats really want to make a push for banning guns, then they should first get the guns out of the hands of criminals. And I have a question: if you ban gun, does that mean the government doesn't have guns either? Or do they get to keep enjoying their protection through the use of guns? Because i'd like to have security as well, but when you can't even keep guns out of criminals hands, how can you even dare ask me to give up my form of protection?
Get rid of crime, gets the guns out of criminals hands. And then, and only the, will I have a discussion about not needing protection. I live in Ca and have a license to carry a concealed firearm. On April 15, 2022 I walked out of a restaurant with my child when a man approached us and took out a 6 inch knife. I took out a 9mm pistol that I carry and said a few things to this man that I cant repeat on this post. The man ran away. That was the third time in 20 years that I used my pistol while in public to defend my life or that of a loved one.
I would like to see law makers pass laws that make it easy for people to get a license to carry concealed firearms so they can defend themselves like I did. I would also like them to pass laws authorizing teachers to be trained and armed, so they have the ability to defend the children the next time that a demented person goes on to a school and try to hurt them.
Hi, what would you have done if that person had a firearm instead of a knife? When I was young gun violence was common, and an exchange of gunfire was the first thing that happened when a gun was pulled. It usually led to an innocent bystander being shot, sometimes it was a child and sometimes it was someone I knew. Is that what you want? What would you be saying if that was your child?
@@jonathanjohnson8376 If that person had a firearm and got the drop on me, my pistol would have stayed in its holster and I would have complied with his demands. Not one possession that I own is worth more than the life of my child or my own life.
As far as the teacher shooting a student, I have no knowledge of that. It is illegal for a teacher to have a firearm at a school in Ca. The idea that I proposed would be a voluntary program. A teacher that wished to participate would have to pass a firearm course and show proficiency with the firearm by qualifying with his firearm several times a year. My child is an 8th grader at a small private elementary and jr high with less than 300 students. There are 5 male teachers at the school under 45 years of age that served in our military and are already well trained in firearms. I would feel much better if these teachers had access to firearms at the school in case some demented fool ever went on the campus and tried to hurt the children.
@@doobiedoo7623 That makes no sense to me because you are saying you want to keep your gun except when you come up against another gunman… The very fact that you want to keep your gun makes it more likely that you will come up against a gunman due to oversupply of guns on the legal and therefore illegal market. Exactly bro, long live our 2nd amendment right 🇺🇸🗽
Supreme Court said govt doesn’t have to protect you. I think it’s pretty clear we’re our own first responders.
this is to much of a compromise, why not just have a heavier application process /social media/back ground check and mandatory safety classes /educational courses to stop possible future mass shooters.
Because people who commit crimes don't bother to comply with those other laws either.
We shouldn't look to Australia for proper gun reform ideas. We should be looking towards Switzerland. Just like the US, there are more guns than the Swiss. They love guns more than we do. They don't have gun shooting problems. If we look toward their idea, I think it will please both gun reformers and gun lovers a like.
Apparently, they were looking to Australia, only because they had suffered through a mass shooting, that was almost similar to what America has faced over the course of last week and years past.
Oh please!
The United States has issues that Switzerland will never have. Remember law enforcement showed up but didn't enter the school. This happened twice now. The school shooting in Broward County Florida . Law enforcement waited outside the school. These are issues not being discussed. Instead they push gun banning. Since police don't do their job 🙄 I think more gun ownership is needed.
@@jeremyd8778 of course, more guns is the answer. **Sarcasm**
The Swiss do not have a gang problem. That is where the vast majority of gun violence comes from. Sweden has much fewer guns, but the have shootings and bombings. The lone gunman accounts for a fraction of a percent of all shootings.
Outlaw personal ownership of all automatic weapons
That Law has been on the Books since 1930's you need a Class 3 License to own a Full Automicic
Already done. It's almost impossible for the average person to own an automatic firearm. You have to have special permits issued by the government to own, or posses one.
you shouldn't comment on gun laws if you have no understanding of the current ones. automatic weapons are highly regulated and cost 20-30 thousand dollars if you can wait the 2 years and pass all of the extended background checks. IF you get a permit, the government even has the right to enter your home and inspect them at will.
It’s already been outlawed get educated.
Poor Australians hurts to see all those different guns taken from good people & destroyed to rubble 💔🇺🇲
Apparently they like it better that way.

Do they tell you if a gun is used to defend yourself, its you who will go to jail. You can not buy/use a gun for the purpose of self protection.
people defend themselves 2.5 million times a year if criminals don’t have guns they’ll just pick up something else
Then so can U!!!
A lot of gun owners in America respect and understand the weight of owning a gun. They also don't have problems going through a process to own them IE learn how to use it. Just the media spews it as if 50% of the Americans don't want tighter regulations which isn't true.
You can thank the nra for that. They want no regulation whatsoever. The nra might as well be speaking for all gun owners considering the political power they have.
They confiscated all the guns in Australia. And it did very little to prevent gun crimes. But you won't hear that on the news. They can only push the American people so far. The Constitution is absolutely absolutel.. It's there to protect we the people from a tyrannical government. Such as the one that we have now.
Look, I’m a gun owner at 19. I own 3 firearms, and I don’t support tighter regulations. If someone wanted someone dead, they’ll do it. You don’t have to be a scientists to do your own research and figure out that Detroit has one of the highest murders by firearms. Keep in mind that Detroit has one of the strictest gun laws in the states. Most firearms used in crimes are either stolen or bought off the streets. Please do your research.
I don't, so speak for your self.
Yeah, the media spews out myths about gunshow loop holes and no background checks as if they are facts. People who don't know about guns are trying to make laws about guns
The challenge with statics today is that a statistic by itself, is not the whole story. Have suicides gone down? Have homicides gone down? It seems like Australia is in the news for so many things today that are not so positive.

What is the population of Australia? I would dare say no where near the size of the USA. Different situation when you are talking about 12 times the size of a country. Yes, we need to make better progress but if we can't "lock a door" and have appropriate security measures and personnel in place, shore up the things that we already have in place that need to be more efficient and more effective. However, criminals will always "break the law" and have weapons. I feel so sorry for the families and their loss.
There are countries like India and china that are thrice the population of USA. Still not even one mass shootings.

Looking forward to a story on the 140,000 who die in America due to alcoholism. This is more than seven times the 19,000 who die by gun homicide. The NTSB in 2009 recommended lowing the Blood alcohol level to .05 to reduce traffic fatalities by ten percent. So far only Utah has implemented this recommendation.
It would also be nice to see a story on how State Statutes prohibit discounts on insurance premiums for those who do not drink alcohol. Only Utah allows this and only for automobile insurance. Sober car insurance policy holders in Utah get 20 percent discounts.
