What can Australia teach us about mass shootings?

  • In 1996, just 12 days after 35 people were killed in a mass shooting in Port Arthur, Tasmania, the government of Australia enacted strict gun control legislation, including a ban on the sale and import of all automatic and semi-automatic rifles and shotguns, and a gun buyback program. Since then, there have been only one mass shooting in Australia, and gun homicides decreased nearly 60 percent. Correspondent Seth Doane talks with Australian politicians, and with a victim and gunowner, about the sweeping changes. (A previous version of this story was broadcast on March 13, 2016.)

Better idea. Pass Medicare for All, which 70% of Americans desperately want and will save the country between $1-$3 trillion dollars over a 10 year period, saving 3.5% the first year. FREE? oh you mean those of us who don't have a mental problem should be paid for those who do... what a brilliant Idea - said no one. here's an Idea - how about I pay for my own families BS & you pay for yours - dang dudette equality is not about equal results in life - equality is about the equal chance for self-improvement, it's not about I'm going to pay for your college because you cannot afford it - where is the "equality" in that BS? how about those who cannot afford a vehicle along with all the insurance, etc that comes along with the responsibility of owning one? are you going to buy one for them? after all isn't that your Idea of "equality"? Parents are who should NOTICE the signs of "Misbehaviour " 1st & if/when they fail their own children you want everyone else to step up & pay the cost so what happens when/if that BS fails? who repays that cost? the child/adult has to be the 1 person who wants to change & mental Illness is not easily cured & besides "mental institutions" are a thing of the past - gun reform? don't like 1 don't buy 1 but good luck when you need to call someone who has 1 & they're minutes away -

There's one gigantic difference between Australia and the U.S. though: the ocean. Australia is surrounded by water, the U.S. is not. From Mexico on down through Central and South America, illegal weapons are rampant, and so you can ban literally all sales of guns in the U.S. but the cartels will still get them over the boarder and into the hands of criminals here. Australia doesn't have that problem.

And yet another shooting still happened in Australia. Gun control does not help prevent mass shootings it just makes killing a little bit more difficult. Going off of this videos numbers you have a 1 in 800,000 chance of dieing in a mass shooting in Australia, and a 1 in 700,000 chance of dieing in a mass shooting in America. (I used the population counts for both countries divided by the number of mass shootings in each as per the video (110 for America and 3 for Australia) and used an average of 5 deaths per shooting in America and 10 in Australia) gun control is not made to help protect you, it is made to help protect the power of those who made the gun control.

The problem is that disarming a nation doesn't solve the crime problem. If democrats really want to make a push for banning guns, then they should first get the guns out of the hands of criminals. And I have a question: if you ban gun, does that mean the government doesn't have guns either? Or do they get to keep enjoying their protection through the use of guns? Because i'd like to have security as well, but when you can't even keep guns out of criminals hands, how can you even dare ask me to give up my form of protection?
Get rid of crime, gets the guns out of criminals hands. And then, and only the, will I have a discussion about not needing protection. But if you can't 100% guarantee my safety, then no, I will not give up my gun. I don't trust the police, or government to care enough about me to protect me in my time of need.

I live in Ca and have a license to carry a concealed firearm. On April 15, 2022 I walked out of a restaurant with my child when a man approached us and took out a 6 inch knife. I took out a 9mm pistol that I carry and said a few things to this man that I cant repeat on this post. The man ran away. That was the third time in 20 years that I used my pistol while in public to defend my life or that of a loved one.
I would like to see law makers pass laws that make it easy for people to get a license to carry concealed firearms so they can defend themselves like I did. I would also like them to pass laws authorizing teachers to be trained and armed, so they have the ability to defend the children the next time that a demented person goes on to a school and try to hurt them.

Hi, what would you have done if that person had a firearm instead of a knife? When I was young gun violence was common, and an exchange of gunfire was the first thing that happened when a gun was pulled. It usually led to an innocent bystander being shot, sometimes it was a child and sometimes it was someone I knew. Is that what you want? Also, If you live in California, don't you remember a few years ago that a teacher accidentally shot a student at a High School with his legal firearm? What would you be saying if that was your child?

As far as the teacher shooting a student, I have no knowledge of that. It is illegal for a teacher to have a firearm at a school in Ca. The idea that I proposed would be a voluntary program. A teacher that wished to participate would have to pass a firearm course and show proficiency with the firearm by qualifying with his firearm several times a year. My child is an 8th grader at a small private elementary and jr high with less than 300 students. There are 5 male teachers at the school under 45 years of age that served in our military and are already well trained in firearms. I would feel much better if these teachers had access to firearms at the school in case some demented fool ever went on the campus and tried to hurt the children.
