Homemade firearms have always been legal and a part of American 2A History all the way back to the founding of the nation. Ghost gun is just a term to scare people. It's also always been legal to build your own gun for personal use, you just can't sell it. It's not something any can just do. When you buy the parts they come milled but you still have to do all the riveting, lathing, head spacing, etc. You need an advanced knowledge of gun smithing to put it together and takes a professional weeks to months to assemble it. You need access to a machine shop to make one. It's not as easy as media makes it out to be.
It has been perfectly legal for citizens to manufacture their own firearms since the inception of the Nation. The fact that most guns used in crime are mostly illegally obtained or stolen. 80% guns do not "skirt laws" because they are legal. Also, when statistics count a stolen gun with a filed off serial number as a "ghost gun" to give the impression that these guns are popular with criminals more than any other stolen or illegally obtained gun and give them an excuse to ban them. The fact that most guns used in crimes can only be traced to the ORIGINAL PURCHASER should be proof enough that registration is largely useless in solving crime.

@Andy Lovett please use the C.A.R.S. Checklist research method to verify the accuracy & validity of the information you have now and what you gather in the future - especially regarding the U.S. Constitution, and the 2nd Amendment in particular. That Checklist is great because it is so vital & applicable to understanding how we disseminate information in our current U.S. society that it was actually required for the research methodology courses I took. Not only is it a simple & relatively rapid way to make sure your information is factual, but also it was specifically developed for use with information that is found online. Secondly, to 60 Minutes - beginning at time stamp 8:36 what is your reasoning behind how you define, classify, and separate "terrorism" and "white supremacy"?? They are one and the same - even according to the official statements of the FBI itself. Please consider the fact that doing this does, and further will, reinforce division in our country. You are reinforcing division in this piece by promoting the erroneous stigmas of those who would choose to demonize any particular attack as more egregious than the other and/or any particular perpetrator to be feared more than the other based on these current societal stigmas. That is objectively NOT journalism. That is repeating political talking points as valid, distinct, and factual information - which, by definition, isn't journalism. Your actions in this regard undermine the trustworthiness of this program and your "news" network as a whole. All of the latest polls in the last several years are showing that the level of trust the American populace has in our news media has been continuing to decrease and is now at historic lows. This has been happening continuously for at least the last 20 years. Please be part of the solution to that problem, or division will most certainly rise to levels that are guaranteed to topple democracy and our country in itself. The media's disingenuous coverage of these very important topics is absolutely shameful and is a global embarrassment. Do better.
You were missing out. "Ghost gun" is a term that conflates stolen guns with serial numbers scratched off, and homemade guns that do not require a serial number together. The advantage to a home made gun is the fact you don't ask government permission, or add yourself to a government list to own it. This means things like the hurricane katrina gun confiscation won't happen to you. You can't be targeted by arbitrary government fees for gun ownership like a certain mayor in california wanted to impose. You don't have to ask the government for permission to pass down your guns to your next of kin. The objective of the government is to be the sole middleman between the people, and firearms. The government does not want ANYONE to have a gun they don't know about in order to impose registries, fees, and confiscation by force. To accomplish that, they conflate home made guns with stolen guns to make it look like a public safety threat to make their attack on home gun building seem sincere, when in truth, it's just a method to make sure they have that much more control over the people. Companies like polymer 80, and 80% arms have been making home gun building more accessible, and have been selling kits to do so since ~2016 with the ATF's blessing. It's only NOW it has become a talking point, and a political target as politicians notice people are ignoring their gun rights infringement attempts buy building their own.
The sheriff is full of malarkey regarding that no one but criminals want these kits. Plenty of people I know who have never committed a crime have made their own with these kits.

I can legally carry my home made firearm without a serial number vs if i had a gun with a obliterated serial they would instantly lock me up for it because its against the law A legitimately built firearm without a serial is completely legal depending on your state laws
Here is what a serial number does: -Helps police return your gun to you should it ever be stolen. -Allows for a registry to be created. That's it. That's all a serial number does. It doesn't make it harder for a gun to be used in crime, it doesn't make it "traceable" in the way that these people think. Traceable here just means you can keep track of who's owned the firearm *IF* that information is even being recorded in the first place. Criminals scratch out serial numbers because their guns are stolen, not because it makes it harder for the police to find out that they have them. It's literally just a series of numbers on the gun. It's not a tracking device. Even if a criminal had a firearm with an intact serial number that could be easily traced to them (somehow), how on earth would that thwart a shooting or robbery? The only crime serial numbers help prevent is the stealing of firearms, and even then criminals will just scratch out the serial numbers anyways making it impossible for the gun to be returned to its rightful owner. But we all know that the gun control groups aren't advocating against homemade firearms because they're worried that they'll be harder to return to their owners if they're stolen. They advocate against these guns because it stops their plan of forming a total registry of all LEGALLY owned firearms right in their tracks. They're only concerned about control over law abiding citizens. It actually benefits them greatly if criminals are running around with guns that have no serial numbers because those crime statistics help them win votes from uninformed, delusional, safety obsessed voters that have never put an ounce of thought into anything in their entire life.
That's the way blame the tool used not the person using the tool. A fire arm ,any fire arm is an "inanimate object" it takes a person to operate it just like a car or a hammer or a knife.
Criminals are not going to go through all the trouble to build a gun. It's far more easy, cheaper and quicker to steal one from a vehicle or home. That's a fact.
No they actually will and I say that as a huge 2A advocate. If you just type in "p80" to youtube you'll see a whole bunch of similar looking people encouraging felons to go the 80% route

Anyone who has built their own AR rifle knows if you buy a complete, 100% lower it goes through the purchase process as a serialized complete gun even though it is a stripped lower ( no, safety, stock, fire control group). 80% lowers (not milled) MUST be serialized upon completion. Do we see the pattern here? Ghost Gun is a made up media term to scare the public, just like Assault Rifle and High Capacity Magazine
Most criminals don't bother with the work involved in milling the lower and shelling out 3 to 4 figures for all the parts to put it together. They just steal them, or buy them off the street illegally, from other criminals or unknowing vendors.

This whole "ghost gun" B S has really taken off in the last couple of years. All a gun is is a pipe.. The term "ghost gun" was defined back in the 1980s when they where trying to ban guns that could pass metal detectors and x-ray machines. The plastic and ceramic guns would pass by the x ray machine a produce a "ghostly" image on the screen, hence the name "ghost gun." It has always been legal to make your own guns at home. Even if the government doesn't want you to have a gun no one will know you have one until either someone rats on you or you do your evil deed. All a gun is is a pipe. You can go down to the hardware store and buy some plumbing pipe and have yourself a muzzleloader. Phillip Luty proved this back in 1996 with his homemade submachine gun, which he wrote a book about. The point he made was lost on almost anyone, all they did was increase his sentence and make an example out of him. They never thought that gun laws don't work on criminals. Maybe instead of focusing so much on the tools criminals use to commit their evil deeds maybe reforming our schools and raising our children right would fix the issues we are having with crime and mental illness we are seeing today. A long time ago this wasn't even an issue people would take their kids to school and they would have a gun rack in the back of their trucks. A father would give his 10 year old son a .22 rifle for his birthday and teach him to shoot and nobody thought otherwise. Most people never thought about gun control as something we really needed to worry about as opposed to just criminals. Now everybody is trying to lock down on guns like the criminal doesn't exist anymore. It doesn't help that they are just letting these people out on no bail laws.

While I support the DIY approach I wouldn't use a fully self built firearm either in competition or especially not as a self-defense piece - the lawyers would go nuts.

I've only ever been hearing 3D Guns called "Ghost Guns" whenever they politics enters the conversation.

A legitimately built firearm without a serial is completely legal depending on your state laws
@Blake Childers so, if you can come up with a cogent argument that guns without serial numbers are different from each other, have at it.
Here is what a serial number does:
-Helps police return your gun to you should it ever be stolen.
It's funny because these ghosts frames have letters of approval from the ATF just like the bump stocks and braces
Make 80% lowers illegal and criminals will just resort to 3D printers. The technology is getting inexpensive.
That's the way blame the tool used not the person using the tool. A fire arm ,any fire arm is an "inanimate object" it takes a person to operate it just like a car or a hammer or a knife.
perfectly legal "objective & well researched" story full of lies. Is the pen or video in this case mightier than the sword or firearm?

No they actually will and I say that as a huge 2A advocate. If you just type in "p80" to youtube you'll see a whole bunch of similar looking people encouraging felons to go the 80% route

Here in the Philippines, in some areas in Cebu gunsmith are illegally manufacturing guns right in their backyards and it not even a secret to their community its widely known who are the people doing this kind of works, and it is happening in such a long time because this trade has been pass on from generation to generation, there was also a time when the government gave licenses to some illegal manufacturer to prevent or control rampant counterfeiting of firearms.
Anyone who has built their own AR rifle knows if you buy a complete, 100% lower it goes through the purchase process as a serialized complete gun even though it is a stripped lower ( no, safety, stock, fire control group). 80% lowers (not milled) MUST be serialized upon completion. Criminals again knowingly violate gun laws by not serializing the weapon once completed, just like school shooter knowingly violate “Gun Free Zone” ordinances when they shoot up a school.
Your 80 percent lower does not require serialization upon completion. You can create your own unserialized firearm as long as it is for personal use and never transfers ownership...
Bad guys have guns and good guys have guns too. Let the story tell itself
im 20 seconds in and I can already tell this is going to be hilariously biased by 60 minutes
Nice commercial for ghost gun thanks
This whole "ghost gun" B S has really taken off in the last couple of years. All a gun is is a pipe.. The term "ghost gun" was defined back in the 1980s when they where trying to ban guns that could pass metal detectors and x-ray machines. The plastic and ceramic guns would pass by the x ray machine a produce a "ghostly" image on the screen, hence the name "ghost gun."
It has always been legal to make your own guns at home.
Tupperware was popular in the late 70's through the mid 80's The Glock was developed in the late 70's and introduced to the market in the early 80's - coincidence? I think NOT! When this "story" was published Gaston Glock was 90 years old - some plastics melt at 90 degrees C - coincidence? I think NOT - Gaston isn't a ghost yet (he's 93 as of July) so therefore Glocks cannot be "ghost guns"
All joking aside you're spot on - use "scary" words like "ghost guns", "assault weapon", "Saturday Night Special" (not to be confused with Saturday Night Live) and the public's lack of knowledge about the topic or the mass-confusion coming out of the federal agencies like the ATF and the majority of people just give up on trying to discern the truth...
Local law enforcement won't disclose their stolen weapon numbers. a BCM department issied rifle was recovered years ago during a traffic stop. LE issued firearms are stolen ("misplaced") all the time
I have a lot of ghosts where I live, I could really use one of those ghost guns.
Feds wanna put a serial number on your plastic so they can tax it, not to keep em out the wrong hands 🤦🏽♂️
💯
lmao free men dont ask, if you are free don’t fear goverment
A serial number is not going to stop any criminal.
Well with all the unlawful laws they are making concerning guns that are unconstitutional, I bet ya many law abiding citizens also own ghost guns
You CAN'T buy the completed Personally Made Firearm (PFM) from anyone who manufactures firearms. You can only buy the uncompleted and separate parts to construct a firearm. The uncompleted Lower (or Frame) must be purchased and necessary processes performed to complete the firearm. If desired the firearm does include a metal plate on which a serial number can be engraved. Gangs and criminals do NOT take the time to buy and assemble their firearms.
No infringement at all on #2 freedom for all.
Imagine thinking that making it harder for law abiding people to get a gun will reduce crime.
Also that sheriff has a remarkable memory when he knew how every firearm on that table was confiscated by just looking at them.🤔
so 60 minutes claims the ATF considered them to be plastic and not firearms
So why didn't he mention polymer 80 getting raided and seized for selling kits?
I’m an enthusiast but I’ve only been exposed to one ghost gun. It was extremely unreliable and was a total waste of time and money. I have no problem if they go away but I don’t think they are problem that is being represented in this piece.
It's just another attack on gun rights, period.
They must be assembled by a competent person and often requires little tweaks to work reliably. Think rebuilding a car or an engine.
I’m so happy of the comment section. Twisted news
What's the differance,,, stolen gun or ghost gun????? The "good guy with a gun" more than likely has a "legal" firearm ... The "bad guy with a gun" is not going to have a "legal" firearm anyway...
Exactly! It's annoying when they equate 3D Guns unserilized* to these crooks and have them being tied into base unregistered weapons. Put tighter laws on these scumbags, not the people that love the niche that Is printed guns in the gun community. They're doing more harm than good.
@@yeejay6396 the thing is is that more laws won't solve anything.
@@PrecisionDan Really doesn't. Convolution doesn't solve preexisting issues.
@@yeejay6396
Yeah the liberal media tool has gotten really annoying, to say the least.
@@GS-zc4sk I grew up around firearms. And I have soft spot for knives and the like because I fk d them to be useful tools for alot of things. But I really fear that up until I make my very first gun purchase, that laws will be so restricted, that I'll only be able to purchase, fire and keep at the gun shop on visitation only. Dystopic to the point where even a CCW is out of the picture for us civies. May God help us all.
I ain't afraid of no ghosts.
I heard you can lubricate the bolt on a ghost gun with leftist tears.
This is why banning all guns would be ineffective.
Wow, the ATF has all the cool stuff !
Probably all stolen from law abiding citizens that were caught up in ATF's constant redefinitions, rules and goal shifting.
