The motivation for this video came from the many times I get asked by my patients this question about Basmati Rice vs Brown Rice, which made me realised that many people do not realise that Basmati Rice can be White Rice, Red Rice, Brown Rice, whilst at the same time, Brown Rice can come from Basmati Rice, Jasmine Rice, other types of rice. If you have found this video, I am delighted that my effort in making this video has not gone to waste, but if I have failed to achieve the goal of clearing this up this confusion or worse, even added to the confusion, then my bad! I shall reflect on how I could have done this video better and improve myself for future videos.
Ever since I posted this video a few months ago, it has received many comments from viewers, some positive and also many negative and even angry comments. I want to thank everyone who made the effort to leave comments, regardless of whether they were positive or negative. I shall take encouragement from the positive encouraging comments but at the same time, even though I may not have or be replying to all comments, I will also not ignore or disregard the negative comments/feedback but to take such negative feedback seriously and learn from them, then use them as motivation for me to try harder to improve and make better videos moving forward. THANK YOU ALL!
Thanks all for dropping by my channel.
    Best Regards
    Doc

@Renee CA Hey Renee, it is a very common misconception! that was why I made this video, hoping to help people, who are trying to make better food choices, understand the different types of rice better. But looking at the many negative and even angry comments below, I might have made some people even more confused by my video! Sigh. I shall learn from this and endeavour to make better and clearer videos in the future. Thanks so much for dropping by my channel and making the effort to drop me a comment, thanks! really much appreciated, best regards, Doc

Interesting and nicely presented, not too long. I think we are now clear you can't make comparisons between different rice cultivars without specifying how the rice has been processed, but we're still not clear what rice to go for if you're T2, as I am. For the record, I tend to buy brown basmati. Is this a wise decision? I also hear parboiled white is a bit better than plain white rice too.

      *Alternative to **_white rice (73)_** Glycemic Index = 100 (glucose/simple sugar)(boiled)*
      Brown rice = 50 to 55
Whole grain basmati rice = 50 to 52
      Steamed brown rice = 50
      Red rice = 55
      Black rice = 42 to 45
      Wild rice = 45
The glycemic index is a value assigned to foods based on how slowly or how quickly those foods cause increases in blood glucose levels. *The lower the NUMBER the better.* Therefore, Basmati rice is much lower in sugar than plain white rice.

How does it compare in this respect with California grown brown basmati rice or with California grown brown rice? If you drink 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before eating the rice, the GI will be "lowered" since the ACV will cause a slower releasing of the starches. Or so I've been told, and it feels like it works! (for me)
And of course, if the meal contains (healthy) fat, the total GI for the meal will be lowered.

Hi doctor, when I cook any types of rice, I will put a lot of water n cooked the rice n discard the starchy water away. Will the GI be lower? I thought the portion a person eat that counts? Please advice. Thanks.

Thank you! This helps clear the confusion. Now we have a starting point to compare GI index. Here in the U.S. so many of us think Basmati is "one thing" unto itself. I am type 2 and I like Basmati very much.. now I can search for the best option. you state clearly that you might compare GI in another video, so ignore the complainers who want it all handed to them on a silver platter. (They probably want you to prepare dinner for them, too)....

Hi Philip, your comment cracked me up :-)
I had taken a break from making videos for my channel, it's been more than 3 months since my last video, mainly because I was discouraged and I was beginning to wonder if all the heart, hard work spent planning and making the videos was making any difference or benefitting anyone. Reading your comment has encouraged me, maybe I should make a 'comeback' :-). Thank you Philip. Blessings, Dr Chan.

@@TheHabitsDoctor I haven't watched any of your other videos, (yet) but this was straight forward, clear and informative. Next time I shop for Basmati I will make different choices. One small step at a time can make important changes in the long run. Thanks again for helping me to understand and make a simple but effective change. It DOES make a difference!. Philip
