I adore my quail! I haven't had to buy chicken eggs because of my very giving ladies. A sand box, in my opinion, is a necessity for happiness. I actually sift my sand a few times before replacing it. The solids, feathers, etc. go in the trash and clean sand gets reused. Sprinklin' of DE and boom, the sand box is open for business. :)

When I had them mine were in a pen and they always turned some of that space into a dust bath that they all frequented lol. They love it so much. Also bare min 28% protein food. Anything less they got really grumpy even in a decent male to female ratio. Quail are a pretty cool bird. Weird too lol. They are so tiny and cute but when they get mean to each other I would say they are meaner to each other in those moments than chickens when they get into snits. They are so small but so hyper and work off that food so quick so they need that high protein. They love love love meal worms and bugs. When mine would find a slug or something I thought no way they can eat that huge thing and they did. First they would parade it around like a prize

Quail are my favorite animals on the farm. The sounds, the sweetness, the yummy, healthy eggs… they will let me love on them and jump right into my hands. Adore my chickens but they aren’t as friendly as quail.

Patara, thank you so much for this wonderful trip down memory lane. When I was a little girl growing up in rural AL, we would see and hear quail a lot! Now, sadly, the wild ones have all but disappeared. I remember so clearly how Dad would answer their calls! How I loved to hear him whistle! Every so often you would see the baby quail and their mama scurry off the side of the road into hiding, too. So stinkin' cute!!! Those are some of the sweetest, dearest memories!❤ Thank you again for this lovely video and taking me back to a special time in my life.

we put ours inside a rectangle plastic box with a lid and put the hole up towards the top where they could get in but they would not throw the sand out

I add Apple Cider Vinegar to my water containers (plastic) to also aide in keeping them healthy from parasites. I add DE to my sand as well.

Those are the sweetest quail! I've been thinking about keeping quail, but my yard has the occasional snake and roaming cats so free range isn't entirely possible, yet I didn't think caging them would be humane. You've come up with the perfect compromise! Your quail look happy and relaxed.

Hey, thanks for the reminder! I needed to change out my quails' sand out today. I have the same quail as you do. Been farming quail for 3 years now. They have the tastiest eggs of all eggs! My Dad use to boil the eggs & he'd turn his back & they were gone lickety split (eaten all by me, lol).

I use the calcium supplement as a dust bath for them. I think it's just crushed up oyster shells, it's cheap and they take a little nibble if they need it, it's cheap and they love it just the same as sand.

Lol. I've got a sand bath in for my quail but the sand is damp. I guess rather than play sand i should have went to the creek and got some sand. But even damp they scratch like crazy. I put elderberries and dry mealworms in the sand for them to eat or play with at will. They love it. And both are very very good for them. I'm looking for a good supplier for alfalfa seeds so i can sprout some for them. Growing up in California the quail loved the alfalfa fields so I'm guessing they like the seeds and sprouts
