    Got quail at an auction, hen laying and I actually love the taste of the eggs. I would say it's slightly more robust in flavor to chicken eggs. Their eggs produce a type of protein thay helps alleviate allergies, feeding eggs to my cat when I have breakfast. Research beneficial bird for meat and eggs and well profit. They are super cute too.

    Thank you again for your content. I had Cutornix years before but not for a while. I just ordered 40 new ones today to add to our 30 meat rabbits and 200 chickens farm. I am trying to figure if I want to put them in the "Ark" (my barn) or build a pen like yours-or just build field tractors. Lumber is SO DANG expensive it is very frustrating. I have 50 new 2x4's delivered a week or so ago. Building your cage/pen will run me 20 2x4's just for the frame before the door and such. The lumber was for my meat birds to be in tractors where I can slice each 2x4 in to a 1x1 and get 2 tractors instead of one. That is for the meat chickens. I think I will do the same for the quail. Anyways love your content, your homestead and the hard work you do for helping educating others in this lifestyle. Your a good man. Have a great weekend.

    Watched this video for a 2nd time, its still more helpful and entertaining than watching hours of other people's quail videos, trust me. I started watching Mark a couple of years ago because I was getting quail eggs. Now I've got back into my gardening, stayed positive over Lockdown, and made my 1st black gold thanks to these videos. xD I was doing the dishes as I was listening. I plan to get quails for meat which I wish I had thought of years ago. Wanted to do that with chickens but my house was rezoned after I moved in so cannot keep roosters which was one of the reasons I chose my place in the first place. If I literally lived across the road I would still be allowed to have my roosters. I am on 1 acre and planned to be more self sufficient when I moved here 6 years ago and that has not happened. Now its time to start putting an effort in and start my veggie garden and fruit trees and have more then just chickens. Thank you for the informative videos. Love being able to go through your older videos and find what I am looking for.

    A new comment to an older video. Remember the old cricket clickers we had as kids? These work well on quail and even chickens to an extent ( though no need to guess chicken sexes ). The male quail we have here will look up, and the females will duck down. The only experience I have is with Bobwhites and Scale (blue) quail. I reckon a crinkled up plastic water bottle might work as well if your having a problem with sexing them.

    Great videos I'm watching from half way around the world in the United States. Just got my first batch of birds 4 weeks ago and these guys are great. I live only 1 hour away from A&M and I think it's great to here people around the world talking about Texas A&M

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 лет назад +1

      How cool is that! You should have no shortage of A&M breeding stock then. They're a great breed of quail and they have a slightly whiter flesh also (less gamey) than common quail - they're my preferred variety by far.

    Love your Videos. Always informative & sound advice. I've just ventured into Backyard Quail raising & looking forward to all the adventures they will bring along lol. I live in Suburban Melbourne by the Beach & have quite the Urban Farm happening. I did my research & quail was the only Bird that suited this environment as they arent considered Poultry which are strictly governed by local Council. They are considered Aviary/pet birds so scoot around the normal regulations. Thanks again for all your advice, keep up the great work. Cheers.

    Thanks for the questions and answers video here. I keep a small number of bantam hens in the garden (in the UK) but a quail appeared in a neighbours garden, with its head skinned and a broken toe. Looks like someone must have let it go inside the house and the poor thing got injured before escaping outside. I like the way you keep your birds. I looked at a number of videos on quails from the USA but they all seem to want to keep them indoors in wire hutches and I don't think that's much of a life for any animal. I can't keep this little quail so hopefully the owner will turn up, however, your video has made me think that quails might be the thing for me when I move to a place with a bit more outdoor space. Thanks once again.

    Hey Mark, I have a question.. or better said a few questions, after watching your videos for a few weeks , I moved from a flat to a house with a rather big garden, atm is end January but I`m already getting some garden beds ready to put in the back yard ,since the house is rented and I don`t want to dig the owner`s garden. And since all your videos are not only about veggies and also about life stock I made up my mind to go for Chickens or Quails . One of my question is what would you suggest for a beginner to start with chickens or quails ? I personally find Quails way more cuter , less noisy and more manageable in a smaller pen/area. I want them mainly for eggs but it could happen that they end up once a month on a bbq . I need to keep in mind that I work close to 12h a day in two shifts, and I`m looking for bird that can do without her owner for a large portion of the day.
    Thanks and keep them videos coming !!

      I know ur not asking me but i would definitely say get quails, I've never had chickens and have been managing to keep two button quails inside my house for over a year, just make sure u have proper feed or the female will really struggle when she has to lay. Also as long as the cage is clean and everything is topped up, they'll be fine for 12hrs, tho they might miss u and do the call thing but that's it, it's not too loud

    Fun fact, the lifespan of your common goldfish is 15-20 years. Most don't make it to that age because they are kept in tanks that are far too small.
    Another fact about common goldfish, they can grow to be about a foot long.

    I'm thinking about getting quail for my backyard Suburban household to provide meat. One of my main concerns is noise. I have tried it chickens before but just having the females was too loud for my neighbors. A quail's Crow at least sounds somewhat like a normal bird call and not like a obvious farm animal.

    There are times when you need to show the birds like you added clips of sexing the quail but I watch one youtube channel where he sits in his recliner discussing the topics on hand and adds photos or clips like you did for this one. Be comfortable and keep making great videos. I raised the A&M type several years ago and could find nothing on sexing them. So we culled the males we caught crowing and in just a few generations had quail that did not crow. To many males is the reason we stopped keeping the quail. Maybe I need to try and find some more.

    wow great video on quail and thank you for answering my wire question. i will be starting the run this week so checked you tube right on time! We eat quail all sizes and one taste as good as other however when selling with all the literature saying Texas A&M weigh 10 ounces when actually some do some do not and I have a few down right tiny. I'm not even sure if culling them I can see a difference, I see more of the same ... all different sizes and the average of 7-8 ounces, so I may stop the practice before long of culling them. I guess its kind of like the egg laying, literature all says laying at 6 week when truth is most lay 7-8 weeks but can lay at 6 weeks. great video and all the questions were good.

    I see that you are picking up eggs off the ground. I like that you have a walk-in Hutch but I might suggest having more sand baths. I find that when I have sand boxes in my wire cages that they tend to lay almost exclusively on the sand. Maybe it's different if you have them free-ranging.

    Pythons and owls and hawks. WAUW! So jealous right now!!! I just love everything about nature! I do so love to watch birds of prey and snakes are beautiful arent they? Amazing ceatures! I live in Belgium and we are currently enjoying the return of the wild wolf in our environment. Well, at least I am enjoying it! Most people are afraid....so sad. Some wolves have dissapeared, some have ended up dead on the road, some were shot. Why are we so unable to share our world with other creatures? They are strong and we are weak. Maybe we dont like to be reminded of the fact that we are not at the top of the food chain when we meet a bear, tiger or wolf!!
    Unarmed humans are easy pickings.....soft, mushy and probably yummie like bacon LOL!!!!

    They make stainless steel welded mesh, and I was thinking of taking it further, and treating it with tar. I would bury it a foot or so, room for birds to dig, maybe introduce an insect habitat, as a food source, of course urine & poop may make it unsuitable. Where I am, rats can dig up to 36 inches, so a foot deep perimeter would soon have rat tunnels popping up in your pen.

    Thankyou so much for all the information, I like to do lots of research before starting something , I appreciate that I live in the same climate as you , just about all the tutorials are in USA , I’m on the Sunshine Coast, I’m trying to get hold of quail in this area and would you please let me know a good incubator to buy , i don’t need a big one , I made my own incubator when I hatched snake eggs( captive breed) and got 7 hatchlings from 7 eggs, so I’m fairly confident . Thankyou again for all your time and a great show, and for the dad jokes lol I feel like I have my brother here 😊

    Hi Mark, thank you for the interesting video. How do quail cope with the cold weather? I'm in Wales UK. I've kept hens for over 35 years, and they cope with extra bedding, etc. But quail look so tiny. Thanks a lot.

    Awesome as always Mark. Fantastic information. I did keep quail when I was younger, you have inspired me to do so again. Maybe they’ll keep the garden in check,as well as my native bees look after the flowers. Tricky Trev

    Can quail eggs survive 3 days in the U.S mail? They were well packaged But it has been cold recently. I put them in digital incubators as soon as I got them.

    Just wondering in regards to your quails, are the chickens and ducks protective of the quails? And, have you noticed any protective behaviours between your poultry?

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  7 лет назад +5

      The chickens and ducks don't pay much attention to the quail at all, but I wouldn't let them share a pen as the hens could hurt the quail if left get too familiar. The ducks and chickens get along well and share feeders but have different drinkers. I've seen no real protective behaviour in our flock except for the odd harmless pushing and shoving at a feed station. Cheers :)

    We are in the process of building a large pen for our chickens, and we were wondering if it would be okay to incorporate our Bobwhite quail in with our chickens and ducks.

      Since the bobs can fly they would probably be fine - yes I would give it a go. Best of luck! :)

    I'm learning a lot about quail and I'm wanting to have a set up in my garage. I hear a very loud Quail is that the male or female? We live in an HOA where we're not allowed to have poultry but they didn't say anything about the garage LOL and I would like to start with two female and one male or three female and one male. Are they relatively quiet or are they as loud as chickens? I don't hear that much noise coming from them in your video except that one loud one in the background lol and I'm assuming it's a male but I could be wrong?? I know you're super busy so no worries about answering my question right away I know you will eventually get to it. I guess my question is if I keep two females and one male or 3 females and one male would that be too much or too loud for a garage setup? Silly question I know but wondering... another thing I noticed you collecting all the eggs and their place in the weirdest areas so I take it Quail are just not a beauty kind of bird that actually will sit on her own eggs or is there a specific season that she will?

    Do you ever feed your quail any grass clippings for the greenery? Growing up, we raised fighting chickens. The brood stock we had in pens, I would cut weeds and grass to feed them a few times a week. Do you do anything like that?

    I have 24 quail eggs in the incubator at the moment. Have you used an Electric Hen instead of lights in the brooder before? EG ecoglow or Titan.
