Watched this as a refresher, started incubating my first eggs 3 months ago. Hatched out 14 quail, 10 roo’s 4 hens. Just put 20 eggs in the incubator 3 days ago. Oh, I keep 9 roosters in a different cage, only 1 rooster with my 4 hens. Been eating eggs since they were about 7 weeks old. The 9 extra roosters will be headed to the dining table next week. Waiting to see how many fertile before eating all my back up roosters.
You have taught me a great deal about both rabbits and quail. I appreciate the time you spend on your videos. Thank You!

I don't know if it will work for you but somewhere I read that if you increase the incubation temperature by 1 to 2° you end up with almost all females... So far it's worked twice... 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I just ate my first two quails this morning, and this video helped get my confidence up to make the plunge, so to speak. It's kinda hard for me to eat something that I raised, but for one, quails (or qualiens, as I call them) are sadly neither smart, nor charismatic enough to provoke affection (though I do like the look and sound of them). The other thing was that I saw one had red on him during my morning check (actually my lowest effort animal chore with a well-designed cage), and so I grabbed him and the other one I found some red on and ate them for breakfast with some caramelized onions and apples, and toast. It was surprisingly delicious and filling. I had to look a couple times because my senses were telling me I was eating something too soft to be meat, but it was the internal breast meat. Just absolutely cream-tender (brushing 6 weeks of age right now, and in the skillet within 15 minutes of dispatch). Not a dry speck in the bird, and they disassemble fast enough with good kitchen scissors and finger strength that my normal breakfast of Egg-in-a-Frame (a chicken egg, fried in a hole that is cut out of a slice of bread using a small cup or can with salted butter as cooking lubricant) is not increased in effort by more than the upgrade value of "plus a little bird meat".
They were surprisingly tasty all the way through, and I think this is the motivating factor that will have me sell all my non-breeding chicken roosters and just eat quails and grocery store chicken. I care much more about my chickens, and really struggle to butcher them. Quails have no personality, no memory, no survival instincts, and don't remember me after bonding time. They have no idea what wings are for, but constantly squirm forcefully, so they are at constant risk of either death by plummeting or injuring their appendages from flopping around idiotically. It feels like mercy to convert them to food, and as long as you use the scissors and then drop them into a box to catch the red, you can do the whole conversion in the kitchen with very little mess. I went with " Texas A&M from Katie The Quail Lady" (Myshire was terrible, unprofessional, and I never got my egg shipment from them), and they were meaty enough at 6 weeks that it was worth keeping the wing and leg meat.
I'm going to build an outside growout pen like in this video, so I can grow them for meat as well as eggstand eggs.

Mr. Chris, a fantastic video, as always. Been doing this a while now so this was mostly review for me, but couldn't help thinking how incredibly valuable this video would be for the rank beginner or for those who are just considering whether or not to raise quail.
You covered all the bases quickly & concisely.
One thing I alway fail to comment on when I leave a response is how clever your door closures are. Most would install them 180° from the way you do it so the bolt would just fall open when disengaged. But a raccoon, if pawing at the closure, would find the door falling open & feast. The way you installed them makes that impossible.
So very simple a protection for your your covey. Simple, but it is just one more item that demonstrates how well you have thought this through & why, if we watch & listen to you, we will be successful.
You are a prized resource, Sir. And I, as do many others, thank you Chris. We pray God's blessings upon you and your family (incl. Max the wonder dog...)

We just moved our quail to the hutch and they seem to spend all of their time in the open side of the hutch. They even sleep in the open side. It’s summer so nights get down to about 50 degrees. Should I be worried that they are staying in the open air side at night? I guess I’m used to our chickens that all head inside as soon as it gets dark.
