    I think until the age of 11 or 12 I could only eat quail eggs since I was allergic to chicken eggs. My grandparents used to have a chicken farm so after I was born and we found out I was allergic to chicken eggs they got quails for their little farm and started buying mayonnaise and other products made of quail eggs so I could eat salads and other stuff together with everyone else. I loved those quails and the chickens too. My sisters and I loved taking care of the chicks every spring, we had so much fun. I really miss those times. You're videos remind me so much of my childhood because I also live on the German countryside and my grandparents have their own little vegetable garden in our garden. Seeing your content reminds me of old summers and winters where there would always be homegrown fruit and vegetables and animals all around the house and me, my cousins and siblings would play all day with our grandparents. Maybe that's why I cry almost everytime I watch your videos. They remind me of simpler times and of what I want when I get to live my own life. Thank you :)

    Quails are wild animals, so they need bigger outdoor space to move and dig in the ground. So, keep this in mind for later, to try to enlarge their yard. Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience! I love your house in the country! Greetings from Greece!!

      quail actually prefer smaller spaces like this to feel safe from predators. this is enough room for them.

    • @blackduckhomestead398
      @blackduckhomestead398 Год назад +8

      @@alishae7710 not 100% true, while able to be kept in small spaces they very much prefer larger spaces as long as they feel safe and have plenty of cover, outdoor quail in larger runs are much healthier and happier than caged or confined birds, we noticed a higher hatch rate, faster eating and walking and drinking after hatch and immediate sand bathing and foraging ability in just 2 generations of being outdoors in a large run! Shade and cover is key.

    They are so underrated little birds, I love them. I built a run for them from pvc pipes and when I have time in the summer I use to take them out and pull in this "trolley" through the garden, they absolutely love it :) Waiting for me to go for a "walk" :) We keep them similar like you and only for eggs, they're very cute

    Quails are so fun! I grow up near wild quail areas (?) and lucky enough to encounter warm fresh laid eggs a few times in the past lol. Though they're in two different environments, one is in sandy riverbanks with low bushes and the other in the forest area with lots of undergrowth.

    Be careful if you have wild predators or even roaming dogs in the area -- they could dig under the fence of the free range area. Might want to consider burying wire underneath or putting a solid floor.

    I think Keeping Quails is a great way for anyone to start out keeping any kind of animal. They are small and you can eat their eggs which I think is better for you. I love how you learned about them and care for them, you have such a kind and loving heart and teaching Alexia that animals deserve fair treatment also we are to steward over them. I learn something new about them from your video, that they like sand baths as opposed to dirt baths like chickens wow. Thank you for sharing and can’t wait to see more adventures with your new additions.💕🐦

    I've never really lived to a countryside but I had neighbors who raised a bit of poultry and planted veggies. Your videos always make me feel nostalgic about my childhood and my imaginations during my childhood ^^ I've always played with my dolls and go to my mom's garden pretending to be living a simple life with vegetables around and raising animals, and who knew that imagination I had as a child was put into more shape in a wonderful youtube channel-- and that it is possible these "dreams" can happen in real life! 🌱! I've always said this in my comments but it just feels so fulfilling to know that in some way your videos show how our dreams and our imaginations can come into reality as long as we become braver to get out of the box work hard for it 💖

    Good evening. Her. What can I say? These videos just keep getting better and better - with superb content and superlative production values. But of course that's to be expected from a strong self sufficient offgrid woman such as yourself. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful Thursday. My favorite method of maintaining a sustainable pantry and stockpiling items long term for the whole family and the family dog and the family cat is what I consider to be the most practical, utilizing every technology old and new. . Except for the fruits and vegetables that get canned, I keep perishable items like meat, poultry, fish, fruit, vegetables and dairy products in the refrigerator on a short term basis until I'm ready to use them for a big family meal - and for even longer term sustainable storage, a large separate freezer, which can store a half side of beef with plenty of room left over for homemade ice cream etc. . I'm considering upgrading to a walk-in freezer at some point.in the near future, if my plans to open a bed and breakfast come to fruition. Sometimes, however a nice round of cheese can do well for quite awhile on a pantry shelf at room temperature - and doesn't mind even if it has to stand there alone. Store bought canned goods get shelves.in the large pantry closet - several for canned meat like corned beef hash, spam and sandwich spread and another for canned vegetables Bread, rolls, grains, homemade pasta, cereals and the like are stored in special humidity controlled bins I order from Amazon Prime - which usually get delivered to my doorstep about an hour after I order them. . Stuff from the family garden and orchard, like onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, cauliflower, cucumber, pumpkins, carrots, corn celery,, potatoes and yams, cherries, blueberries and strawberries get canned in Mason Jars and stored in the cool, root cellar of this wonderful rambling former farmhouse (circa 1867) I share with my extended blended family and several rambunctious dogs raised on table scraps from the some of the finest food from a plethora of sources both commercial and home based. . There's even a special separate "summer kitchen" which I converted to store butter and ice cream churns, pots, pans, utensils, extra storage containers, foil, bags, cutlery, and other meal related accoutrement. Out back in the woods, just beyond the big pile of wood I maintain all year, (for use in an antique woodstove I keep on hand, in case the power goes out) there's even an old rusting vintage still where my great grandfather made some of the finest corn whiskey for miles. Next to it is the rusting hulk of the Ford Model A he used to transport that powerful hootch by the light of the moon on soft summer nights to his eager customers in a tri-county area. Further into this verdant forest of mostly sycamore, oak, pine and scrub, runs a cool stream into which I occasionally cast a rod or net to catch some Brook Trout, Bluntnose Shiners, or whatever takes the bait (just earthworms for the most part). And yes, hunting season means wild turkey, deer, and even an occasional wild boar. Next week, I'm planning on filing for a permit to 3-D print a smokehouse in order to be able to create gourmet artisan handcrafted, beef, bacon, turkey, and beef stick jerky, which interested local merchants can private label for other people to share with their families and their family dogs. Unfortunately, I had to break the bad news to my free range hens today that due to expected egg shortages regretfully numbered are their days of laying a couple of eggs and then basically taking the rest of the day off with ranging privileges' within the parameters of a few very nice rural acres - parts of which are rich with fat grubworms. There's even a short dirt road between the main barn and the farmhouse which they're free to cross to get to the other side as often as they'd like. My rooster Ben overheard me and he ain't too happy either, knowing full well that due to oncoming egg shortages, he'll be "workin' overtime to make sure there's plenty of eggs for me and the homestead

    We have Quails too! But always read that they don't understand a ramp. So that is why we keep them in a volière with a night enclosure in the volière om the ground (but they never have to stay there). We have also two budledia's in the volière. I love to keep them. They are so lovely and make nice sounds. I think they are such cozy birds!
