Actual location of the Knock Detonation Sensor in a 2012 Hyundai Accent SE

- I couldn't find anything online pointing-out this part if my life depended on it. So, I finally found it myself and decided to make a short video for anyone else having this problem. There is another popular video on RUclips with a guy searching for it unsuccessfully. It has quite a bit a views and mostly "thumbs down" clicks since the title misleadingly gives the perception that the video reveals the location. Well, this video quality is sub-par, but at least it accurately shows the location of the Knock Sensor.
What you will need:
(No need to remove the heat shield on top of the engine. I removed this in order to better show you the location of the sensor)
This is the exact same link to the sensor that I ordered on Amazon at a fraction of the price of what you will pay at Autozone or O'Reilley. amzn.to/2QBJ02T or amzn.to/2IoUswp
Tools:
Floor jack & at least one jack-stand (two is preferred), & a creeper (optional): amzn.to/2Wihg9O
10mm socket nut driver to remove the seven nuts holding the plastic shield in place underneath the front of the car: amzn.to/2YXiyDW
12mm socket, or wrench to remove the nut holding the sensor in place. (this is very difficult to get to, as there are many restrictions. I recommend using a Flex-Head Ratcheting Box End Wrench. Link to tool on Amazon: amzn.to/2JRRvq2
Flat tip screwdriver and needle nose pliers in order to remove the wire and electronic connection: amzn.to/2HOtUV4
amzn.to/2Z60GqF
Recommended: Eye protection, and a headlamp: amzn.to/2QB8WMd
amzn.to/2JPR2ol
Don't hesitate to let me know if I can provide more detail or explanation. - Авто/Мото
This is the only video I could find that *actually* shows us where the dam sensor is. Much appreciated.
Hey do you know if the 2012 sonata 2.0t sensor is in the same place?
I don’t. But, it wouldn’t hurt to check. Let me know what you find outside. Thx
My pleasure. It was frustrating not being able to find a single thing online. That’s why I made this once I found it.
Excellent video, thanks. My check engine light went on with the knock sensor code. The dealer said replacing it would be $500-plus (this is Brooklyn, NY, so prices are high) because they'd had to remove the intake manifold. Instead, I found your video, ordered one of the sensors you suggest, and did the repair myself. Certainly no need to remove the manifold. Took about an hour, with much of the time devoted to disconnecting the clips on the old sensor. (Have a small flat-head screwdriver on hand for that, and study the new sensor to see how to the clips work.) I'm not entirely convinced this is going to replace the problem, but I'd glad it's only costing me $20, not $500.
Also, replacing the spark plugs was a great suggestion. That cured a shifting problem I was having.
+Michael McCoy Happy to hear that it saved you a bundle. How’s it holding up? I’ve come to the theory that the thumbs-down clicks are from Hyundai mechanics. LoL.
For those doing the replacement, a standard sized ratchet doesn't fit up in there. Use the smallest ratchet in the set to fit up in there with a 12mm socket. I almost went and bought angled wrenches to do the job. I didn't think the small ratchet would be strong enough because its short and I wouldn't have leverage. I was wrong. These are only tightened to about 12 ft/lbs. So its easy.
This was just what I needed for my 2012 Kia Rio (sister brand). Thank you so much! I didn't have to remove the heat shield or noise shield. It was slow going for me, having to make use of a box wrench. I would recommend a ratchet wrench (a small socket wrench wouldn't fit). Anyway, I was finally able to remove the old Knock Sensor & (even more challenging) get the new one installed. Couldn't have done it (wouldn't have tried) without this clear video showing the location and how to access. In my case, the spurious P0325 code no longer comes in to vex me.
Wish people are like you & post helpful videos like this👌🏽💯
This was really helpful!!
My 2012 Hyundai Accent just threw the knock sensor code so this was helpful. Thanks :)
Same. I cleared it and it hasn't returned, hopefully it stays that way...
Thanks for the video and the part/tool links. Ordered both for my 2012 Kia Rio that was pinging, had a power loss in low gear and throwing P0330 code. Getting to that nut was difficult, even with the right tool, but it all worked out. She's running great again.
+sifual01 Very happy to hear it. It sure does seem that they design these cars so that we will give up and let them do the work, doesn’t it?
If you have more hesitation / engine stall behavior, be sure to read all the comments here. Might need some spark plugs.
Thank you SO much for posting this! I was also having the issue of finding anything actually descriptive, but this goes beyond detailed, and I'm super grateful. Great job, thanks again.
Additionally: I have a 3rd Generation Kia Rio (2012-15), which also has the Hyundai Gamma engine. So, other Kia drivers with the typical knock sensor issue, here is what you're looking for.
I’m happy this helped. Be sure to keep those spark plugs fresh, too. I’m on my third set.
That is also on the menu for this weekend, alongside a valve adjustment lol. 2013 and already 160,000+ miles.
@@bikerreed how often you changing spark plugs?
THANK YOU SO MUCH WHY DID EVERY OTHER VIDEO HAVE TO OVERCOMPLICATE THIS AND STILL NOT EVEN SHOW THE LOCATION OF THE DAMN THING
LOL. Precisely why I decided to make this. I knew I would have the only video showing this.
Again thanks, and to all who own a 2013 kia rio or 2013 hyundai accent they are baring the names the same car everything is exact same duplicate location changed mine glad u video taped it though good job
OMG thanks for this video autozone told me that's what I need to replace hope it's the same for my 2013
Elisa Cardenas be sure to check those spark plugs, too.
Thank You so much! I was STRUGGLING lol
Thank you so much for this thank goodness I didn’t have to remove the intake manifold for a little sensor
That was really helpful thank you
Great video bro!!
Thanks
Good spot. Great post.
Thanks for the video. I have the same problem on my 2013 Accent. I will order the sensor and hopefully will turn off the engine light.
Dude that’s so weird I’m having the same problem too @ 83k miles
@@WHATdaFUNK123 same with me now at 89k miles
Johnathan I never replaced mine , but I’m at 85k now and my check engine light hasn’t been on since I watched this video .
Thank you so much man
Thanks for the video! I hope it's the same on my wife's 2011 Sanota 2.4.
matejcekauto J recommend reading all of the comments here, too. Some additional minor things to check also.
Did it work for your sonata? Or where was it mine went out as well
@@younginjayfelt2031 my wife's Sonata actually ended up needing the engine replaced. The knock sensor issue was a pre warning.
is knock senor in the same spot for a 2013 Hyundai accent
So I replaced mine 2 years ago , recently the code came up again . What causes it to go bad ??
muchas gracias, me evitaste un viaje al mecanico, Puerto Rico.
¡excelente! Cualquier día sin un viaje al mecánico es un buen día.
I changed my knock sensor on my 12 accent and it the code came back on. Ive read that i need to reflash ecu? Can anyone confirm they did this and it fixed it ?
there is a service bulletin for some hyundais with the knock sensor code. the ecm needs to be reflashed in some cases. i replaced my knock sensor on my '13 accent and the code came back a few times. reflashed ecm for $120, never came back on. i shouldve done the research before throwing parts at my car.
Is the same location and process for a 2013 accent GLS?
It helps, thanks 🎈
my check engine light just came on there no pinging nose and I went t auto zone its the knock sensor so do I need replace it
Well, I hope that my video helps. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Does a 2010 Hyundai Accent have the knock sensor in same place. Can't find any info on web for that model
+Linda salazar, I don’t know. I suppose you can check. Sorry.
Thanks for the video my friend. I have a 2012 veloster with the same code. Bought the part now I can do it myself in a matter of minutes from what it looks like. 89k miles. Once you changed the part did this fix the problem? I guess my next move will be to replace the spark plugs as you recommeded along with changing to higher octane fuel. I dont really have a pinging in the motor as of now so im assuming this is part of regular maintenance throughout the life of this "quarky" vehicle
+Travis Finley, it did fix the problem, but it cane right back, to my dismay. However, the spark plug change was like getting a new car. Runs like a champ, now. The only issue I have now is that it burns through oil pretty quickly, as I heard this model does.
I´m sorry to ask but as you have said " it burns through oil pretty quickly"... do you mean it turns oil black really fast or do you mean it uses 1 quart of 5w20 oil every 1000-1200 miles or so?? (This is a 2013 accent)
I´m experiencing the second. And want to know why. Also did a compression test and it has 180,180,185,180 psi. So I don´t know why this oil consumption. Car idles fine, runs fine, no smoke, no CEL on, no anything. Just about 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles or so. My other car (a 2005 honda civic) never has done that !
Someone told me to change the pcv valve which I already removed and blew air through it and it tested OK.
Part is cheap (about $ 4 at rockauto) so I don´t know if I should change it. Any comment is very welcomed. Thanks
Mine (2012 velosterr non turbo) CEL display happened around May 2019 (only restarted -cleared) then came back last week of August 2019 after reaching 90Kmi. Restarting did not clear it but using FIXD reader clearred it still up to this comment date Sept 5, 2019. Other reader would have probably cleared it too. Im still gonna buy a new sensor. How many knock sendsors are there anyway on this car?
Does this need a computer reset? I replaced mine and the engine light still comes on for it. It'll be on and off and then on again.
Same for me! I heard it needs a ecm reflash but I haven't done it yet.
thanks
my 13 accent pings rlly bad under load but has no fault code could this be part of the issue?
Joshua Warwick only if that pinging is accompanied by stalling/loss of power. If you have 100k + mileage, change the spark plugs, too. I just changed mine and my car performs line it's brand new again. I also switched to 93 octane gas, which took care of the pinging.
+Joshua Warwick...It could be, as it is a common issue. However, if you have 100k or more miles, change your spark plugs. A few other issues is that it will begin to consume a lot of oil, so keep a close eye on the level. I have also switched to 93 octane gas, only. That got rid of most of the ping.
Does this apply for 2013 as well
I believe so
Would this be the same for 2014 accent?
NatsuSenpai I don’t know. Good question. Maybe one of the other commenters could answer that. If you find out, please share. Thx
If I replace it, how long until it goes off?
I don’t know yet. My replacement is still going strong. I’m now at 260K miles.
I just did this job and the check engine light is still on, is this normal or how do I get it to shut off?
+wiz420ify You still need to have the check engine light reset. You can get this done for free from most auto parts stores.
However, there still might be something else going on. Best to have it reset, then have the auto parts store give you a free reading.
+wiz420ify It has to be cleared manually. You can have this done at places like Autozone.
I was able to replace the knock sensor in my 2013 Hyundai Accent without having to take off the intake valve. I went under the car and since it's so tight under there, it's best to use a 12mm wrench. I tried to do it with power tools and they could not fit.
The mechanic wanted to charge me $500 to replace the sensor since they were going to going to take off the intake valve.
This works for a 13 Kia Rio
This car is still going strong, BTW. 279K miles.
I have a 2012 Accent GLS. I can barely fit my arm in there to touch the damm thing. Anyone having the same problem?
Yes. It was tough to reach.
Thanks my Veloster has 72,000 my car is old 😂 lol
Does anyone else's freak out for like an hour and then the light goes back off?
and mine a 2013 with 75,000 miles on it
I have a 2013 with 42,000. Junk car!
Mine is 2013 62,000
Shows how to replace knock sensor but not show me actual #3 sensor location
+Scott Runnels Not sure what you’re referring to.
Easier to remove the intake manifold
In your description, you Refused to use common sense and state that this is 4-cyl. ONLY.
Hyundai Accents’ come ONLY with 4 cylinders…common sense. That’s like putting in the description that it also uses 4 tires ONLY. 🤦♂️🤔
