    Great topic. Got me, because diode mode is my favourite function. I used to do fault finding in gas equipment systems, but some of your knowledge here went above my head. My mind is slower these days, but I know I never had the scale of knowledge you have and teach in a fairly accessible way. Thanks. I’m sorry, and perhaps it’s a language barrier thing, or maybe I’m just too much of a novice. But, I don’t understand what this video is trying to demonstrate. 1-You want us to figure out, what component is hidden behind a 1Kilo Ohm resistor AND beneath a silver bag [?!]. 2- So, with the multimeter on resistance mode, you get a reading of 1kilo Ohm [the circuit is not powered]. 3- At 6:53 you power/inject the circuit with 5volts [1amp]. 4- You then check on diode mode, and you get a reading of +/- 0.5volts and say:”...it is not necessarily a diode, it is probably a junction [diode, LED, etc]”. 5- Finally, the component is revealed - it’s a mosfet. So, I ask: “How does one apply, any of what was said and done, in this video, on an actual circuit board? Also, if you are not blind, when you are placing the probes on a circuit board you will see/know, what component you are testing? So, why did you hide a mosfet beneath a bag? When does that happen, on a circuit board? If you want “... to see what is further down the power rail”, just use your eyes! Seems to me like it would have been more useful, to explain WHERE and WHY one should START by placing the test probes on a circuit board, when you are trying to diagnose an issue with it. What was the point of this whole video? I’ve watched this video three times - To me, this it’s just a mess of random words and facts, with no applicable lesson in sight, that I can see. Please clarify... something.

    In diode mode you inject 1uA current in the circuit and you measure the voltage across the semiconductors, on ohms you have high impedance and you read the resistance. Just that

    • @N0G0MAIL
      @N0G0MAIL 4 года назад +6

      "in diode mode you inject 1uA": 1mA /3V is the correct value, 1uA is too small. There is no multimeter that use 1uA in diode mode. In ohmeter mode you can have a low voltage, it-s not about impedance.

    I want to apologize for my last comment. I did not mean to offend. Pardon my ignorance. I will try again, to ask a better question. So here goes: if you are going to use the diode mode to find a short, somewhere in the power line and you get a reading of +/- 0.5 volts. Ok, that tells you, that you have a junction [you could have used your eyes but,... whatever]. Ok, but that is a good junction, the diode mode isn’t telling you that it’s bad. Then what? You haven’t learned anything more, about the circuit or about what issues it might have. Am I wrong?

    Hi.frankly, it's a bit of a mixed expression.
    I've been trying to figure out how the diode mod works for a few days. The probes there, actually, the logic of measuring the diode in the reverse direction is the ESD diode protect event. In fact, negative voltage is applied to the motherboard through the esd diode in the opposite direction. and it shows the voltage drop of the diode there. but the output values are not standard as in the phones. For example, if a value on the chipset line gives 0.060mv, it will give a different value on another motherboard.

  • @boolfnasa2582

    Thanks Sorin, but what is the conclusion of this diode reading? 0.4V means the junction is good, what if it was 1.4V? what does that mean? and if the junction is bad what would be the reading?
    (I know a beep means short and it would be Zero in Ohm Mode that is easy), but what is the message from the diode mode you spoke about?

    • @DetermineLyngdoh
      @DetermineLyngdoh 4 года назад +9

      The multimeter sends a small amount of voltage through the circuit. 0.4v is the voltage drop (voltage difference between the positive and negative terminals of the multimeter) It means that most of the voltage is just going through the circuit easily with low resistance. 1.4v means 1.4v loss through the circuit because something is taking that current which means a higher resistance.

Then i desoldered it and tested it and the diode was good. I don't want to desolder every diode i have to test. And a question on resistors. What's the difference between smd resistors R100 and 100? very good and instructive ways of troubleshooting black box type circuits.
    i would like to add here that tools needs to be used judiciously as per application. for a DMM in ohms mode the Open circuit voltage on probes is tool less to switch on the pn junction of semicons. Whereas in diode mode it is around 3.3 volts. Most of the modern day devices are working on these logic levels, so connecting to dmm in diode mode means as good as connecting to actual power rails. of course will low current limits .

      He explained it clearly and demonstrate it. The diode mode will be able to tell you that there is something like Diode or PN junction there, and whether the circuit is NOT just resistor(s). If you use Ohm mode you can only detect the resistance, ignoring the possibility that there might be something else in circuit and will trick you into believing that the circuit is safe to be plugged into power because you see resistance is high.
