@@TheTurkaderr Lol! I need to get back into them-- it's been like 15 years since I read David Sedaris. And since I watched Strangers with Candy. I'm in a show hole anyway!
So...realize I'm a bit late to the party here, but as one of the neighborhood kids Drew asked about -- lived four houses down from the Sedaris family on North Hills Drive in Raleigh and Amy and I were in jr high and all through high school together -- I can offer some perspective. The family was the most unusual/eccentric on the street, as was the house itself (a cool Modernist, set down from the street in a sort of wooded ravine; most of the neighboring houses like ours were more traditional). I was in the Sedaris house periodically, and Amy visited our house. I met David but he was five years older and seemed kind of sullen and to himself. My younger brother was Paul Sedaris' age, and they played together on at least one sports team. Overall impressions were that they were avant-garde, even then. They seemed artistic and doing their own thing. But no indication that they would ever become famous. They were just the quirky neighbor family. My recollection is the kids were mostly given free reign, more so than typical for that area in the 1970s. There was a sense of kinetic energy with six active kids/teenagers in the house. I'm not sure when their mother died, but don't recall ever seeing her. They certainly had interesting art on the walls, including a number of brooding pictures by well-known NC artist Robert Broderson, which were recently sold at auction here. Broderson's art was somewhat disturbing (look him up). Must admit that as an art collector now own one myself. Had to have made a subliminal impression on me 40+ years ago... The Sedaris family sold the house recently; their father lived to be in his late 90s. I think they owned the house since it was built, ca. 1965. I reconnected with Amy about three years ago, and we had a long talk about our lives and our youth. I asked her whether any of Strangers With Candy was based on our Sanderson High School experiences. She said not really. My most vivid memory with Amy is of she and I building the senior class homecoming float in my backyard. Let's just say it involved a giant bucket of KFC, constructed of chicken wire and 1000 boxes of different colored Kleenex, from the top of which protruded two large movable chicken legs, feet and all...😄
I’m just reading it now a year later after seeing him speak this week in NC. I love the journal aspect, I can pick it up if I have 30 minutes or 3 minutes to read since there’s no fluid story to follow.
Don't forget the gift she gave to their dad! Amy and David's dad was obsessive about the girls keeping their weight in check (I'm putting it lightly) and was known for being very blunt if he got the impression they were too heavy. So one day, Amy uses her Strangers with Candy money to get the bottom half of a custom-made fatty suit (they come in two parts and she didn't have enough money for both parts), which she actually would wear around town with pants over it! Needless to say, their dad nearly had a heart attack when he saw her, and she'd do things to really get him going, like when she would open the fridge and bend over to look for something, and pull out a giant family-sized jar of mayonnaise and put a spoon in it! She kept it up for a few days too!
I have met David twice at two different book readings and he is just as delightful as everyone imagines him to be..the first time I met him he was making everyone give him an animal to draw in their books they were giving him to autograph and he would draw the animal then he would take a red pen and add blood to their mouths or bodies...I think we talked for fifteen minutes the second meeting about me being in the movie business and he was telling me about a movie he saw about a one eyed viking and valhalla, you just never know what is going to happen with this man...he must be exhausted after every book even but they go on for hours because he just doesn't want to cheat someone out of getting the experience of meeting him and living their dream. He is just too precious and a gift from God. And don't get me started on Amy, who I someday hope to meet and work with onscreen.
When I met him the staff from the book reading venue kept trying to get him to hurry up. He would give them the side eye and draw even slower 😅 he also gives gifts to teenagers, usually little things like hotel soaps.
I've been to 4 of his readings, although I only twice had the patience to stand in the book signing line to meet him. I saw him last week at a small book store in southern Chicago. He became fascinated by the way my fingers bend. I never thought much of it and neither has anybody else. My fingers just sorta bend back a little more than most people. Nothing inconvenient, or crippling. The middle finger is especially pronounced. He signed in my book "I'm hypnotized by your curly fingers." Then he asked me to show my fingers to the other people in line and the employees standing around. I'm going to see him again in November 2022 when he comes back to the Midwest. I might hit all 3 of his shows in the area -- Kalamazoo, MI; Crystal Lake, IL; and Minneapolis, MN.
I rendered him silent haha - I turned up with a cold and a letter I'd written for him. I covered my face because I didn't want him to catch anything and he just didn't know what to say to me
Just saw him on Colbert….he’s had his teeth straightened and he smiles so much more. I have laughed out loud on the bus, plane and at work from reading or listening to his essays.
I love, love, love David. I have read all of his books last one was Happy Go Lucky, my favorite is Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk, read it at least six times or more. I love laughing it makes me feel refreshed and more Alive and David never disappoints me.

Favorite author n favorite cast member from Elf (AND she is way accomplished in her own right). Met D.S. at book reading/signing in Louisville, KY (of all places?) n I asked him about Amy n if they started in NYC at the same time. I also indoctrinated my teenage daughter to the delights of this fantastically American author. Strangers with Candy is the best comedy show ever. And I LOVE David's books. His story about being the elf had me in tears.
Holiday on Ice is a must read for me every Christmas season!
That’s good, but nothing can beat “Dinah, the Christmas Whore”

Interesting. Especially the art. Quirky and dark.
You need to blog!!!
How lucky! I would've loved to have lived in the same neighborhood as the Sedaris kids
I’ve read everything David Sedaris has written. Can’t wait to get this new one. I have always loved Amy. Their chemistry is so adorable.
I met David in 2017 when he was on tour hawking Theft and Finding. He was really nice.
Their sister lived in our neighborhood. Very sad story

One gift Amy gave David was when he was getting off a train yelling "I hope you beat that rape charge today" in front of a lot of strangers.
🤣🤣🤣
It was worse than that, something like child rape or pederasty. Amy goes for the jugular.
Don't forget the gift she gave to their dad!
Amy and David's dad was obsessive about the girls keeping their weight in check (I'm putting it lightly) and was known for being very blunt if he got the impression they were too heavy. "Naked" is one of the most hilarious books I've ever read. David Sedaris has a marvelous way with words.
Me talk pretty one day
David Sedaris, the children's eye doctor. That's so obscure I bust out laughing! Ah, David is one of a kind. And his sister is awesome too.
I loved Amy on strangers with candy and on the tv series monk 🥰😘💜💜
And The Closer
Jerri for president
The definition of the word “delightful” is a picture of these three! 💚💚💚

I've red most of David's books. I love Amy on TV and seeing them together was really fun.
Wow. Never would have anticipated these two would be on Drew.

Have to agree. Wish she'd just shut up or better yet, leave the set and let the 2 of them just talk for an hour..
Yep,... they have both been separately on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and just killed it! It's too bad they were never on together!
Me too, i usually love Drew but i just didnt care for her interveiw of David and Amy at all.
So agreed. Ugh.
100%. Drew shouldn't be hosting a show like this period. I like her, but she is terrible for this job. It's excruciating to watch
This is what RUclips is meant for...finding things I missed first time around and am VERY glad I found at a later date...better late than never. ❤☮🌎
Can we have this interview again but with Terry Gross on NPR?
Quite a coup getting them both on the same interview 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️

I love David & Amy! btw: My mom included cartons of cigarettes in our Easter baskets, too!

Well, he is the better sibling by far.

David and Amy !!! funniest siblings ever . Thanks Drew Totatally Oddaly . So fun to pretend to be a Doctor .
They technically appeared together on Bojack Horseman, with David playing the mother of Amy's Princess Caroline.
Technically not “appeared”.

Drew seems "touched".. or is it an act? What adult acts like this? Is this because she was enabled as a child actor of Hollywood? Truly bizarre
Yes! Lol her intro then a flash at this yellow masked audience made me feel like I wasn’t sure what I was watching as in “is this a joke?”
