Cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor in a Subaru 2.5i Legacy or Outback

- In this video I am showing how to locate and clean the mass airflow sensor in a fuel injected car or truck. The car that I am doing the job on is a 2013 Subaru Legacy with a 2.5l four cylinder engine but this same process will work in any car with fuel injection. In this video, we will first locate the sensor and then go through the process of removing the mass airflow sensor and cleaning it. Symptoms of a dirty mass airflow sensor include rough idle, poor or jerky acceleration, and difficulty starting. This is a job that anyone with some mechanical confidence can perform in their driveway.

Good video. I cleaned mine already in the same manner on my 2005 Forester 2.5 SOHC. The part that you sprayed in the video was the IAT ( Intake Air Temperature) sensor. The MAF ( Mass Air Flow) sensor is inside the plastic housing. It's a dual sensor. So I took it back off the sprayed inside. Hope this helps someone. The cost of that sensor for my car is $212
Someone help that doggo, he's clearly being attacked by a flying insect! super funny!
😂😂😂😂👍
Came for the MAF, stayed for the dog
Dog photo bomb!
Tim I literally thought the exact thing you said then came to the comments and saw this haha
There are 2-3 wires hidden away inside the plastic body of the MAFS, these should also be cleaned, that is the actual sensor. The other guy is right, you just cleaned an IAT temperature sensor, as it is really 2 sensors in one.
The Alcohol Headsup Really Helped Me, I Googled It And I Put The Sensor Inside A Ziploc Bag With Alcohol, Shaked It For Like 3 Mins, let it sit inside the bag for like 5 mins, let it dry for like an hour, i also wiped the thing gently and it responds way better now and idle its somewhat better
Excellent video. I watched intently and just couldn’t seem to get to my idle problem. I recently had the alternator replaced and they apparently knocked off a vacuum hose near the alternator. I finally saw the problem and BOOM! That was it. Simple fix.
Thanks a ton. My 2013 has rough idled for years and recently started surging on acceleration. The first drive after cleaning the MAF felt good. Will continue this as routine maintenance
Very informative. Thank you. Just had this issue and took it to the shop. Unfortunately, this is how I learn about vehicles. When things go wrong.
Great editing, I've got to try this on my truck.
Your dog is hilarious! Thanks for the demo!
Haha she has a lot of personality. Thank you!
This was very helpful, thank you. I know I cleaned mine a few years ago but it seems it may be time to do it again
You doing very good job 👍👍👍👍👍
Hi, thank you for your efforts very appreciated. Everyone should be carefull doing this. And one more word, you forget to spray inside the maf, it uses same technology as my corolla.
I used a razor scraper on mine to remove that black gunk on the end. The wire broke off so I soldered it back on. The car runs better than ever! My milage has been better than it ever has! I lost the screws and used hot glue to hold it on with but it popped off so I used Orange RTV on it. I got it all over the end of it when I dropped it in the dirt. It didnt seem to hurt anything. I also superglued the connector on because I broke the tab so the connector holder off. I got too much superglue on it and now the tube wont come off for the air filter. Its ok because I never change my air filter.
Lol that is ridiculous, but whatever works... Probably wouldn't recommend it unless your car was a serious beater and you are just trying to keep it going for a little longer
@@CoolStuffGuysLike THAT was a joke. I take really good care of my vehicles. I would never fix anything using hot glue or do a bad job at a repair. I guess I was just feeling silly that day.
Made me laugh 😂 awesome man 👍
@@scottfirman you didn't use chewing gum? my go-to..
My stage 2+ flex fuel tuned wrx was on the dyno Fri...Just had the chance to go WOT today, and noticed an intermittent hesitation at 5500+ rpms...Almost like a mild misfire but no CEL...After banging my head, and thinking it may be a boost creep fuel cut (would be bad!) I decided to check the maf and map sensor...MAP was FILTHY DIRTY from oil vapors, most likely from before i installed my AOS, TGV/EGR deletes...Gently cleaned her with maf cleaner and a tiny FINE paint brush...Runs like a champ now...I hope it was just a fluke, and that it doesnt come back tomorrow..lol
That dog is awesome
My 2003 subaru legacy has 240,000 miles. I don't think that sensor has ever been cleaned! I think I clean it today
Good vid. Thanks
Well thank you sir. I am currently burning too much gas, and now I am off to the AutoZone to try and solve this issue. Salud.
Dude, you're the wine guy haha. I've had conversations with you about 4 years ago.
Luv'n the playful doggo! :)
Hi! Good video.
Can you do a video showing how to clean the Throttle? Thanks!!!
Doing this to my 2014 in the morning.
I’m at the dealer now & I have my boots on. I have to run out of here! Quick!
Dog at 0:35 made me lol.
Thanks bro
My Liberty/legacy GT with 97,000kms was feeling a bit rough at idle. Did an upper engine clean and MAF clean, on the visible and internal bit of the sensor. I must say when waiting at lights my car does feel "still" now with no rough vibrations.
Awesome! Glad the MAF clean smoothed it up.
Cool Stuff Guys Like though now my temperature is stuck on 19 degrees 😳😳😳
After about an hour's drive/day passing the temp sensor is good now
Good video... Better Dog ☺
Thanks! I’m trying everything I can with this Outback I have. It hesitates and there’s no “smooth-ness” to accelerating after slowing down. Im hoping this MAF cleaning will help!
Hmm. If it has a cvt transmission it could be a downshifting issue which may be a transmission controller valve body issue. They program these transmissions for fuel efficiency so hard that it takes out all the spunk. It's like starting in second gear I find often with the newer subarus.
@@CoolStuffGuysLike - I’ve found that if I pump the gas very slightly 5-15 times I can get it to speed up quicker (to a point). But when doing that, it sometimes doesn’t change gears. The fuel system (or sth) doesn’t respond - or sth else goes on or doesn’t and even with the little pumps the RPMs just go higher and higher. Yes the car is still accelerating somewhat like normal except the RPMs are wicked high. Of course I back off all of the way at that point until it normalizes. By that point the need to speed up quickly is over and the operation of pressing on the gas pedal just returns to normal. The RPMs go down to normal and that bout with slothliness is over. Until the next intersection.
Here for the doggo!!
Of coarse I subbed
I cleaned mine on my 2011 and it still runs Funky. Then I cleaned it again and it still runs funky. The TB looks clean as a whistle. Only 65K miles and 9 years old. What's next: PCV? Exhaust Valve Lash? Plugs? Cam or Crank Position sensors? All vacuum lines appear good and in place. I guess I need a pro level scanner. - Sandy
He cleans the wrong sensor in the video.. what you need is up the hole way toward the top of the assembly. You'll need a flashlight to see them and use the maf cleaner and something you can reach un with a soft brush.. be careful not to push or snap them. Good luck.
UT, how the fudge you reset the eyesight and ecu....?
Cool
Lol at the dog chasing a bug
I only subscribed to see more of the dog 🐶 😆
I clean with petrol n degreaser..Is that help ?
But that is not MAF sensor you are spraying, that's temperature sensor. The MAF is inside square plastic tubing.
That's the Maf hot wire not the signal wire that relays air density information back to the lack to tell the injectors to spray more fuel to mix with that current air fuel ratio.
I have a 05 legacy GT turbocharged check light is on and it's saying mass air flow sensor circuit low how to rectify the issue
Can we use crab cleaner ?
Cheapest source seems to be eBay, where you can get a 4.5 oz. can of MAF Sensor Cleaner along with a 5 oz. can of throttle body cleaner for under $13 shipped. Amazon wants that just for one or the other!
your intake pipe, stock or upgrade? and if so an upgrade, where did you acquire it?
It is the standard intake pipe that came with the car.
My guy.. that's not the MAF sensor you show you're spraying.. it's a heat sensor that's coincidentally housed nearby it and will affect nothing airflow-wise. The MAF sensor is two ~1cm tiny wires hidden up the hole in the tube; use a flashlight to see em. You need to spray up the tube and let it dry thoroughly. Best of luck.
I have a forester 03' is having some losing power problems, and sone ppl told me it was the mass air flow sensor, but mine doesn't have it. It have an air intake so doesn't have that sensor.
Hmmm. Are there any wires going into the intake tube? It really should have a mass airflow sensor or else the fuel injection won't know how much fuel to deliver under different circumstances.
Your MAF sensor on that year is next to the coil on the right if your facing the motor (drivers side). Took me a while to find it too. I was looking all over the air intake forever lol
just have to look for group of wires connected b4 throtle body to find the sensor/sensors
Should be on the throttle body
I have a 2003 Subaru legacy 2.5l and the EGR is throwing codes.
You think mines dirty bc I put a knew I take on mine and after when I put the sensor in and plug it in the car won’t start Still cranks and if it’s running it will shut off if I plug it in
good boy whoes a good boy?
The dog!! Lmao!!!
Hi! Can you do a Video on that crazy DOG?..
hahaha!
Rubbing alcohol should be fine, I used to be an Apple repair tech and we submerged logic boards in tubs of rubbing alcohol overnight to clean them.
MAF sensor should be fine. [Edit:] for the record, I used MAF cleaner a few days ago for my sensor and not alcohol. I also used the MAF spray on my PCV valve and it worked pretty damn good
My 06 legacy will shake when speed to 38km/h, someone say it may be MAS problem, hope this video can help, thanks a lot
It could be a tire balance or driveline issue. If it surges or bogs during acceleration it could be the MAS. You might have a broken belt in a tire. That seems pretty slow to start getting a shake.
Got it,thanks
Yah my 2003 subaru legacy has been jerking upon acceleration somtimes happen even while im driving maybe this will help
Hi David, I am having similar issues with my 02 forester (My acceleration hesitates and surges and iddles rough) Did that fix your surging issue?
@@gregholder5283 no, I actually had a cylinder blown out
@@davidpickle8423 Thanks for the reply!
I would like to see more dog plz&thx
That's not the right sensor. There's 2 sensors. It's the other one. That's just air temp sensor
On the 08-14 legacy and outback that is the mass airflow sensor (Denso Part Number: 22680AA38A). I believe it also measures air temp but the part is listed as "Mass Airflow Sensor". The only other sensor along the intake is the MAP sensor but that is on the other end of the throttle body.
Sorry I should have said that's the right part. But it has two sensors. The easily visible sensor on the outside measures air temp but the sensor that help with MPG is actually deep inside that part. You can clean the same way also see: ruclips.net/video/t-REglL2twg/видео.htmlm48s (for general idea of location on a *similar* sensor) The air temp sensor isn't really affected by a lil dirt but the other sensor is extremely sensitive and thus why its hidden.
What you are cleaning here ( ruclips.net/video/-1AxwtXcY7I/видео.htmlm39s) is the AIR TEMP sensor.
Yes there are 2 sensors on the maf, the one you sprayed is just 1 sensor, you should spray the other one inside
thx for the vid. $150? Try rockauto.
I got one from Rock Auto - defective. I have had that problem before. Maybe just unlucky. On the bright side, their rotors were perfect!
The 🐩 😂😂
Wait did he say MASSair FLOW SENSOR OR mass AER FLOW SENSOR... 45 sec vid turned into motivation to buy a thesaurus...
Never trust a mechanic who doesn't know how to open the hood on the first try
that's not the MAF sensor
Dog vs bee
Lol she goes nuts over bees.
4-10 extra HP...woohoo...lol
Don't listen to this guy, he cleaned the wrong part of the sensor. The right part to clean is inside the hollow stem. He cleaned the intake air temperature sensor.
your dog is very distracting and making me laugh.
where is the IAT sensor?
This guy sounds like Basically Homeless
