  • I made Mongo the Red Demon for 2017 Blizz Con. I was so happy how he turned out, but I wasn't happy with his weapon. My plan is to make a big War Axe for him to match his armor. PlaidFX asked me if I would like to try out their new product. So I thought what a great time to test out some new paint on my new foam weapon. PlaidFX is not regular acrylic paint, it's super flexible, durable and no cracking. They have great selection of colors and there metallics are amazing.
    Thank you Plaid for your paints for Cosplay.

    I try to avoid watching stuff like this because it physically forces me to go and resume my own projects. Always such a massive push to continue the craft lol. Amazing work as always Ted!

    That was seriously awesome and such a perfect weapon for Mongo! Being so new to all of this I am always out of my comfort zone so it's good to see one of the established masters of the craft in the same position. Thank you, Ted! You rock!

      Rapid fill is water base filler you brush on, and when it drys you can sand it super smooth. Great for Foam blades to look shinny and sharp.

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  4 года назад +2

      Great question. I use glue everything on all the time. Down side is if you want to travel with it there's no way it will fit in a loot locker. So from now on I make everything travel friendly.

    I love your builds! What would you use in place of the Band Saw for cutting EVA foam? That's not something that your average Joe would have lying around, and it's hard to cut using an Exacto knife or box cutter.

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  4 года назад +1

      I would use the box cutter, granted it would take a bit longer but thats what I use to do before I had a bandsaw.

    Ted, what’s the advantage of using the rapid fill versus heat sealing or mod podge/flexbond?

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  3 года назад

      It's whatever works for you. I love Rapid fill because once it drys you can sand it.

    But Acrylic spray varnish will not flex like the plaid FX paint! :( Do they not make ANY protective topcoat for their paints?

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  2 года назад +1

      My favorite clear topcoat is Rustolem 2X clear. It’s durable and it flexible.

    When I'm repainting Nerf blasters, I use enamels (specifically, Testors' brand model paints), so I'd like to know how acrylics compare when painting both hard surfaces and closed-cell foam, since I've had mixed results with enamels on foam. Anyone care to share their opinions on the matter? Thanks!

    • @hoxton_hummingbird
      @hoxton_hummingbird 4 года назад +1

      I use a lot of acrylics for airbrushing foam. Not that much enamel, only for metal that gets cracked paint on top. I really like it, stays bendable.
      Really depends on your basecoat to be even over the porous foam. I had some pores stay open sometimes
      I have had some bad effects when i sketched onto my foam to figure out where to dremel. High density foam, pen for the details, basecoat with Plastidip, airbrushed acrylics on top.
      Some time after that the pen started to seep through. It seems to go away after some time though.

    • @EvilTedSmith
      @EvilTedSmith  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I agree, acrylic is better for foam. When it dries it's still a bit flexible.
