      In 2017, Corbyns labour were still talking redistributive policies, Tory corruption, and class and relative inequality issues... They went on to show their true priorities over the next three years. Britain rejected those priorities, we aren't a country of identity obsessed socialists. When you spend two years saying you're concerned with working class issues then literally oppose a working class decision for the next three years... You can blame wet flannel starmer all you like, but the rest of the UK know it's just cope, the quicker you realise the real issue is with the behaviour of leftists the quicker the left get back in contention.

    • @StudioBrock1337
      @StudioBrock1337 3 года назад +10

      I'd heard of Starmer doing things. I don't think he took a vow of silence so much as Labour has been focused completely inward from what I can tell since 2019. They do their job in Parliament and outside of that it seems to just be how do we hold the Party together. The only reason that's not been a major issue for Conservatives is their jobs hinge more upon Party unity right now and they're doing quite well electorally.
      Of course none of these things really matter in the end. The public is going to do whatever it's going to do and it often won't make any sense. Not to mention media will heavily favour Conservatives the whole world over so regardless those candidates will always get a coverage boost. And it doesn't help that a Conservative can be accused of just about anything and it won't bother their voters, but anyone from any other Party has to actually live up to a sense of acceptable morality or else they'll get the boot.
      A Conservative could commit vehicular manslaughter and win re-election (they've actually even legalized this in some US States) but if a leftist politician has an unpaid speeding ticket their career is toast. Unless they're a major politician of course. Party leaders get away with a lot no matter what Party they lead for example.

I don’t even remember them saying a proper number on what they would raise Nurses wages by. I am working class and cannot see myself ever voting for tories because of the privatisation but I don’t see any substantial action from labour on anything.
      All this may seem a bit vague because it kind of is. These things just caused me to doubt labour a lot. The one thing that really made me lose sight of what labour is, is when Starmer didn’t call out the health secretary on the corruption case. I believe starmer said something along the lines of this isn’t the time, but jumped on Boris for the texts. Ethics, honesty and integrity mean a lot to me. I can’t accept someone who was the head of CPS not going hard on all corruption.

I was listening to David Lammy and he said its the risk of defamation calling it "corruption" for them. I do think they should've done it anyway because we all know the Tories and the media would've said that if it was reversed. I think after this a full policy list needs to be released out and really hit home. I agree some of the old policies may cut through but the ones saying that the 2019 manifesto was perfect are deluded. The party needs to come more to the centre as he's doing but I think centre left - centre is ideal for electability given we aren't gonna go from the right to left in one go. It went all sorts of wrong and while it was inevitable, you can see that they absolutely did not appeal to the Brexit voters and need to shift that if they want their seats back.

      Leaving aside the consolidated Tory-Brexit Party vote, Between 2019 and 2021 Labour's own vote went down a massive 9%.

      The problem with the by election is Hartlepool is that Labour still controls many similar White working class seats like that, which are trending Conservative. It means they have more room to fall, which seems impossible given how low they already are.

      There's massive overlap, and lots of people in between.
      Most white people in places like London are also working class, and there and middle class people in the North.
      That said, it's very true. Places like Hartlepool have been trending away from Labour for a long time; but the idea that its inevitable is just wrong.
      It's a result of the political choices Labour's leadership are taking.
      Again, Labour gained a huge number of votes in Hartlepool in 2017 at the same time as gaining a huge number of votes in London.

They still retain enough ofa majority to win the elections, but they have lost points even in Labour areas as unflinchingly loyal as the Welsh Valleys.
      Of course, this may be down to some local issues, the widening of the Heads of the Valleys road for example, something that has been required for rejuvanation of the Valleys for decades, was not payed for by either the British or the Welsh Governments, but by the EU... Ironically enough. People in the Valleys are starting to realise that the Tories will not offer to spend in the Valleys because they are so staunchly Labour, and Labour will not spend in the Valleys because they literally have not lost an election there in a hundred years..... I am concerned about Labor, they just seem lost and the sooner they can finally move on from Brexit the better. I voted remain but I accepted the result, country will be fine out of EU and it’s long past time to start making the future better for the course the voters chose which was out of EU. Honestly it’s been 3 elections since I voted labor, but I’m not opposed to them but they need to come up with policies that help not just the poor (they’re not even doing that atm) but also middle class - and the economic policy needs to be much more centrist. They have an opportunity to take support from greens by coming up with a green deal, with no Corp tax for 10 years in deprived areas for new investment from r&d/tech companies which will a) help environment, b) create jobs in areas of country needing investment and c) deal with the reality of Brexit as a fact of life and work it to the countries advantage. Cnn had yet another terrible story on their website today about UK (they seem to have a policy decision made that is anti-uk) but regardless the story mentioned England becoming a 1 party state which in their usual moronic way misses the point, that said labor really needs to drastically change because the country does need an effective opposition and whilst conservatives have been doing a decent job recently they will eventually screw up bad enough they need thrown out and there needs to be a real party waiting in the wings to take over and right now, I wouldn’t trust labor to run the church social (well, if I was supernaturally inclined and cared about churches that is).

    There's a few reasons that weren't brought up:
    - We've had Labour in Hartlepool for about 50 years, and one of the massive reasons was the feeling of "being taken for granted" among former Labour voters that led to them initially going Brexit Party as the viable alternative in 2019, and then committing and going Conservative two years later.
    - Related, we've had very little investment leaving us with huge unemployment and huge crime rates. Obviously you can blame either party for this, and the Tories are in power (historically parties don't favour the oppositions safe seats), but like TLDR said Ben Houchen is incredibly popular for the investments in Teeside. We've nationalised our airport for 40 million, and we'll be designated a Freeport; people are desperate for the same in Hartlepool, and I personally think it's the beginning of the end for Labour's hold not just in the local area, but on the north.
    - On a national level, Labour has an identity crisis; it seems like it can't decide whether to pander to the traditional socialist voters, or the middle ground Blairite voters. The issue is, the working class isn't made up of steelworkers and miners anymore - the votes for the BP in 2019 show that it's disgruntled unemployed working class Brexiteers who are out of work, and want it back. The Tories appear actually able to deliver on that as a united entity, while Labour is still split in that regard. I did hear a number of times as well that Labour appears to be more pandering to the minority issues which has apparently alienated them from the majority, but for Hartlepool this is extremely evident for people who simply are tired of social justice - "at the end of the day, me accepting whatever you've got between your legs isn't gonna put food on the table".

    • @ave789
      @ave789 3 года назад

      @@NAYRUthunder99 That's true! I imagine (it's a quote from a mate to clarify) it's more the feeling of apathy because you can't really go on social media without encountering people talking about social issues, and it's not something that affects the majority of us. Perhaps it's Labour focusing on said vocal minority and those issues, rather than for instance the wider issues that affect us all that have led to people becoming disillusioned with them as representative of everybody.
      Ironically I'd say it's the attempt to include everybody that has pushed people (such as a hard Brexit town like Hartlepool) away.

    42.3% turnout in Hartlepool by-election. When turnout is that low, it's almost impossible to actually guage public opinion. The only practical interpretation you can make is that huge swathes of the electorate are disenchanted with politics right now.
