    Went to the vet with my dog. Checked in, he was weighed, went to the exam room to wait for the vet. A minute later the vet tech came back and said they needed to weigh him again. When she came back I asked if there was a problem. She said "no, he just lost 5 pounds and we wanted to make sure." I told her "Well, Doctor X said he needed to lose 5 pounds, so we put him on a diet." She replied "Yeah, we're just not used to people listening to us."

      Talked to a canine nutritionist I know and switched his food, cut back a little on the amount he was eating, and upped his more exercise.

      Or the inevitable call at 4:45 on Friday, for the animal that just HAS to get in right now because it's been itchy for three months.

    I had a 20 pound tuxedo cat who was a cuddly, lovable bundle of fur...until it came to any medical procedure. Then he went nuts! He leapt, he clawed, he pooped, and he meowed loudly and piteously. At the vet's it meant the kitty straight jacket. (Who knew there was such a thing?) When I had to give oral medications, I had to make do with a very large and sturdy towel, but I still have the scars to prove that I DID follow doctor's orders. My favorite was when I took him to the mobile vaccination unit at the park. The vet tech emerged from the van visibly unamused and put his carrier down on the parking lot with a less than gentle clunk and called out, "Who brought the tiger???" I sheepishly slunk over to claim him. RIP, Spooky boy.

    #1 is SPOT ON (hah) perfect!
    I had owners demand a refund for the antibiotics prescribed for their dog's pneumonia since they didn't work. When the tech counted them we found the owners had given NONE of the tablets since their breeder recommended homeopathic therapy (and of course, the dog was even more febrile at that point).

    Arriving just as the vet is about to close is horrible if you were marathoning a show, no doubt about that, but if your pet just happened to get sick around that time then it's not really the owner's fault. Either way, when such things happened I take my pets to a 24 hour veterinary hospital to avoid bothering vets or even worse, arriving when the vet is already closed.

    • @Someguy-my3he
      @Someguy-my3he 5 лет назад +1

      And there's no reason not to call first. If they're closing, they can refer you to an after-hours clinic and save you the time.

    Number 3- Answer the phone every time- unless your vet clinic is calling you when you’re expecting results to be relayed. If you miss a call, make sure to not listen to the voicemail- the vets and support staff just make those messages so that they can hear themselves talk; there’s no relevant information in them! Just call back and say “I just missed a call from someone” with no further context- a mystery is always fun!

      Megan Tholin I know this is a while ago but when your pet breaks their leg and you find out the vet that was on the website you found for vets that treats rabbits ACTUALLY doesn't treat them but they were closed anyways.. and you end up driving half an hour away just so my mom could pay over $700 on the checkup, X-Ray, cast, Stasis meds, CPR (wasn't needed), and pain meds

      Well from an owner's viewpoint, it's also frustrating for us for the pet to appear fine until after the Animal Hospital closes and then have to take the animal to the Emergency Veterinary Hospital, starting at $160 to walk in the door. To my dear pets, please show signs of and illness on Monday through Thursday!! (ok, so they don't use the internet and can't read, so I will talk to my pet psychic about this), lol. I appreciate the vets I have worked with. Thank you vets and vet techs.

      @@jmo5186 honestly I get it, prices from an emergency vet clinic are through the roof and are so stressful for me cause I would not be able to pay it immediately. However, as someone who works at an animal hospital and sees pets come into an animal hospital with an eye that's falling out of their socket or a cat that's barely breathing and is seconds from going to heaven we are NOT NEARLY as equipped to handle such situations as an evc. If your vet is closer than an emergency clinic and you see your pet barely hanging on then I would agree that it's ok to bring them there so they can try to stabilize them before sending you to an evc. Get your pets checked regularly and do some basic checkups yourself! Animals are good at hiding pain but things like petting all over their body to check for lumps, monitoring weight, and even just checking their respiratory rate are all quick and easy things to get a good picture of their health! My coworker has a cat who has respiratory issues and she felt her cat a few days ago to check her respiration and brought her to the clinic because it was over 50 a minute! If she left it alone and didn't check on her cat then she probably would've had to go to an evc in a few weeks/months cause her cat would have collapsed.

      @@strawberrymalk1732 thank you, good points. I check my cats and have attended classes for feline and (some canine) care and minor treatments one can do at home. I have a library of references, my favorite, the outdated Anitra Frazier "The Natural Cat" most of it very good advice, some questionable. I do recognize odd behavior in my own cats, but still, their timing is atrocious and my vet has seen and knows much more than I do.

    People usually work nine to five. God forbid your dog gets sick during the day. When you get home no vets are open so you have to pay double for your office call if you're a working person.
    My dog gets sick on a wed or a sat. your going to an expensive ER because vets like to work four days a week.

      If they offered afterhours service and were on call then yes, that is not cool that they didn't want to come in. But if they do not offer that service then you can not blame them for that. Vets are people too and need to sleep and eat and have some time away from work so that they can do the best job that they can when they are at work. I don't know about you, but have you ever been on call. It's highly stressful, you can't go out you can't sit down to eat, you can't get proper sleep. If they don't offer afterhours and they refer you to an emergency clinic then that is ok. Emergency clinics are there for that. But just imagine having to work a 12-14 hour day often with no lunch break and then get called in the middle of the night by someone when you are not on call. The same goes for human doctors.
      Plus do not paint all vets with the same brush.

    • @Deadmanwoods
      @Deadmanwoods 10 лет назад +7

      Yes, do not blame vets for your poor planning. Waiting until your pet is in dire straights to seek medical help is shame on you. It is annoying that people wait until their pet is nearly dead then book a 5:45pm appointment when the clinic closes at 6pm and the pet has been sick for over a week which equates in the vet having to stay late and paying staff overtime. Like human hospitals, vet clinics have costs such as payroll, utilities, insurance, continuing education, equipment, rent, supplies (vets spend the same amount of money purchasing supplies yet do not charge the same as human hospitals.... for example, a liter of IV fluids costs less than $4.00 and a vet clinic may charge $10 to $15 for the same bag of fluids a human hospital will charge you at least $200 for). Practicing as a vet is physically hard work and mentally stressful as vets have to be every type of specialty and are expected to know everything about every species. Again, this is very unlike human doctors who have the luxury of focusing on one organ or body part and not to mention human doctors are much better financially compensated despite the fact that education costs are the same regardless if you go to medical or veterinary school. Vets leave school with the same amount of student loan debt as medical students.

      Poor planning? Really? You weren't there. I diagnosed her as eggbound when I returned home after a day of moving my in-laws.
      This has nothing to do with planning. Nothing. The ignorance abounds.
      I didn't care what it would cost. I'd sell my airplane to pay for her to live.
      yet I get ignorance from someone who was not there.
      If it's about the money, DON'T become a vet. Flip burgers.
      This enforces my distrust of vets even more.
