I hate it when non-vegans are like oh its vegan of course it doesn't taste good. In my experience, vegan food is the best food I've ever had. You cant expect a crappy sub from Subway to compare to something well cooked and seasoned!

Great film! I was most impressed by Max's ability to stay strong when being ragged on by his closest friends. Going vegan usually is accompanied by changes in personal relationships with friends and family (more so when you are vegan because of ethics and not just eating a plantbased diet). Great job, fantastic watch, everyone wants a follow up! Veganism is the future

    • @chrisinreallife2022

Yes this! And it's not just with a vegan diet. It's with any healthy diet or food change! If you are faced with your biggest temptations, many people have no idea the internal monologues and mental gymnastics you sometimes have to do to keep strong. Dieting/weight loss and getting healthy is not just diet and exercise, it's also a practice in mental and emotional strength!

A review of the “Big Max” documentary
I am glad it was made, but my observation is that it has little direction, and that you are left with making your own conclusion with not that much vegan education thrown in.
There are a lot of people like Max, and having such a person can inspire other people just like him to ask themselves questions about what they are eating. This is throwing light on the dysfunctions, and people with these dysfunctions making them harder for society to avoid, and go into denial about. It is good to see that, but also it would be great to throw light on why these dynamics happen, and why people end up overweight in the first place, what the food industries do to get you hooked so that the viewers get a better sense of reality.
This is such a frightening window into the shame of our society. You have this individual in this documentary who is completely separated from themselves, their addictions, and self-abandonment is completely supported by their environment. This completely showcases the gaslighting, cognitive dissonance, and apathy of our society. He is a walking trauma bag, and everyone enjoys being around him because they are just like him internally, their emotional world is just as damaged. None of these people are aware of this, and this level of dysfunction is normal for them. The way others treat him is also completely internalised, the part of him that feels lonely is so buried away that he cannot even point out any negative emotions that he is feeling. Every human feels negative emotions, it is a complete disconnection from feeling to be unable to point them out within oneself. Those people around him are also struggling with feeling their negative emotions, that’s why they are all friends, that’s why it all “works out” so well for all of them.
Max needed deep healing, and psychological help to change food habits. They completely did not approach it from ethics, and the support, connection they got from this documentary, which is totally the main reason why someone would go vegan in these circumstances, most likely will be gone after it. The reason why someone goes overweight is because of deep psychological trauma, and issues. Fixing surface level symptoms like the diet doesn’t help, once the supportive environment is gone there is no reason to not revert to old habits. While I love all sorts of vegan activism, and methods this is too much off-hands for the viewer when most people viewing this won’t be vegan. It can be easy to brush off the impact, and the message of this documentary for non-vegans.
It is concerning to end this documentary with camera shots of meat, and how much this person enjoyed it. It is disturbing how the smoking addiction is completely unaddressed. It seems that in order to stop the meat addiction they overfocused on other addictions instead. Letting people do what they want can be greatly healing, but I don’t think Max knew what eating animals truly entails, and this is a vegan documentary. At least some commentary on the nuances of this complex topic would have been nice, people don’t really know what to do with the darker aspects of themselves that get displayed in the media, and covering them is important to make people understand as much as possible.
In conclusion I love that this documentary brings light to the problems, but I don’t see the right steps to solve them or steps that could greatly impact as many people as it possibly could. I want people like Max happy, thriving, and not in basements. I hope we start waking up to our shadows, and loving the parts of ourselves that we do not want to see. I get that this documentary was made with the best resources and intentions in mind.

In his defense (I'm about 13 minutes in watching him try to choke down that oatmeal) the guy giving him advice on his meals isn't making it very exciting for him. He could have easily made a delicious breakfast scramble with potatoes, peppers, onions and tempeh bacon and juseggs and baked beans and sauteed spinach and mushrooms instead.... and it would have been packed with nutrients and protein and super healthy, and he would have loved it! I mean, he's expressed numerous times that he likes to cook so, get him in the kitchen! Get him exploring some new recipes! Get him going with a vegan cook book! This was not planned out well. If he's used to eating bacon and eggs and toast every morning OF COURSE he's not gonna like a bowl of oatmeal. I don't even want that bowl of oatmeal, it's boring and gross! Doesn't even have fresh fruit on it or hemp seeds or coconut milk or maple syrup (I'm assuming). Like, come on. If we want people to take eating healthy and plant-based seriously we have to make it TASTE good.

The switch to a vegan way of eating 'cold-turkey' isn't in general the way most who stayed vegan began, at least that's not what the majority of vegan RUclipsrs have stated. I haven't watched any other 'one-month' vegan or overnight or similar type vids to form consensus re successfully maintaining after. I feel personally going the gradual transition route may work best for me however I am curious to see more vids like this one. Would any have recommendations?

I’m not denying meat can be in a sense appetizing but I think about the animal and I’m sickened by it. Being vegan has come very natural to me and it’s easy to keep it that way but it sucks that the restaurants don’t provide much vegan options or there isn’t much vegan places which would be great if there were lots of vegan places or only vegan places lol

I hear you brother! On the plus side you eat fresh, not all ingredients In restaurants are fresh, they may say its vegan and have no idea in terms of oil use etc, I miss eating out but cooking fresh food at home gives me comfort and I feel good too.
Also saves you a lot of money.

That Subway Veggie Delight is a lot more satisfying if you add guacamole!
At Chipotle, you get the guac free when you order the veggie burrito or bowl!

Man, I love this guy.. I’ve been vegetarian for 3 years and I’m now doing veganuary and I stumbled across this documentary and it’s so well done. You really get the essence of Max, and the transformation he goes through from where he doesn’t care if he’s healthy or not .. to then make the decision to make a change because his body needs it. I genuinely enjoyed every minute.
Would love to see how Max is doing now, hopefully he’s continued to a path to health

This was a great documentary, unlike others I have watched but absolutely hilarious. Max is witty and handsome would love to see how he is getting on now, did he continue with his vegan ways or did he fall back to old habits, Victoria, Scotland

What a cool lovely guy! He is so self destructive he has a lot of issues that he has not faced. I really hope he is still alive because he is the size of a house and he smokes. He did not go fully vegan their is beaver butt in ciggies pall! He is clearly eating his feelings. We really need a follow up I really hope Max is happy and doing well! I want to be his friend haha! I hope he is still alive because the way he is going he is digging his own grave. I wish the best for him and we really need a follow up. What the weight is doing to his body alone is scary. Best vegan documentary I have seen so far nice one!

Amazing film! I don't know how it took me this long to watch it. I'd like to tell viewers that this is absolutely a much more difficult way to start eating plant-based than is necessary. At the beginning, forget about health. Don't limit the salt and sugar and sauces. Replace your butter and milk with vegan butter and plant milk. And for gods' sake, eat more than stir-fry. Focus on bulking up your meals with legumes and grains. Make sure you get enough calories. Learn how to cook great tofu. Work on reducing sodium, refined sugar, etc. once you build the initial habits. You'll thank me later.
Excellent alternative brands to make the transition easier: Beyond (burgers/ground), Field Roast (sausages/hot dogs), Morningstar Farms (chicken stuff/ground beef), Gardein (chicken stuff/ground beef), Mooch (melty cheese), Follow Your Heart (melty cheese), Violife (melty cheese), Field Roast Chao (non-melty cheese), Tofutti (cream cheese), Earth Balance (butter), Country Crock Plant Butter (butter).
