As an American, I always go home for Christmas, not on Christmas! Now, you can use "on Christmas" if in fact you were traveling exactly on December 25th, but most would actually go home on Christmas Eve.

In Indian English, we generally say dates like-
12 July , this might sound weird to non-Indians
We sometimes also say, 12th July and 12th of July

1️⃣ In British English, we sometimes use the modal verb "shall" instead of "will". We also use "shall' to offer our help or to make a suggestion.
✅ I shall be back soon.
✅ Shall I do the washing-up for you?
✅ Shall we go to the cinema tomorrow?
In American English, people don't usually say "shall". Instead, they tend to use "should".
✅ Should I do the dishes for you?
✅ Should we go to the movies tomorrow?
    ➡️ To do the washing-up 🇬🇧 / to do the dishes 🇺🇸
➡️ The cinema 🇬🇧 / The movies or the theater 🇺🇸
2️⃣ Verbs in collocations can differ in British and American English.
    ✅ To have a shower 🇬🇧
    ✅ To take a shower 🇺🇸
"Take" is also correct in British English but less commonly used.
    ✅ To take a decision 🇬🇧
    ✅ To make a decision 🇺🇸
    ✅ To have dinner 🇬🇧
    ✅ To eat dinner 🇺🇸
In some regions of the UK, for instance in some parts of Southern England (Somerset, Dorset), the word "tea" is used instead of "dinner" ("to have tea").
    ✅ To have a holiday 🇬🇧
    ✅ To take a vacation 🇺🇸
    ✅ To have a nap 🇬🇧
    ✅ To take a nap 🇺🇸

Chris, thanks for this great lesson! I love your Br. vs. Am. English videos. Could you please compare the intonation and musicality between the modern RP and American accent in your future videos? By the way, I'm halfway through the first part of your British pronunciation course. It's an excellent course! I'm glad I signed up. It's been so helpful.

British use “agree” as a transitive verb (taking a direct object): “The two sides agreed a compromise.” Americans use it as an intransitive verb, which takes no direct object but requires a preposition instead: “The two sides agreed on a compromise” or “agreed to a compromise.”

Do uh know what's the problem in other countries which don't have English as their national language or mother tongue, they just mix up both the British & American accent and spell it in a different way..

Indian government should also formulate rules for indian English as we are always drifting between American and British English. So there will be clarity on which rules to follow and which to not. But, According to me British English is the standard form of English, American is the derivate.

India, being an erstwhile British colony, is used to British English. The entire constitution of Indian Republic is written and conveyed that way. American English has become more a fashion in a context these days. Yet, all English grammar covered under academics in India conforms to British English. Learning it otherwise, however, should never be an element of discouragement for anyone.

    • @kmcyasaswi2512
      @kmcyasaswi2512 2 года назад

Yes, it's true but nowadays academia is also tilting towards American English. For example spellings and grammar rules too.
