- 1983 Julien Temple short film showcase for ABC's "Lexicon of Love" album, featuring excellent live versions of hit songs. Starring Martin Fry, James Villiers & Lisa Vanderpump. Captured from the PAL LaserVision disc, the quality of which is superb however the VHS to DVD capture device I have is not great, but should be perfectly watchable. Due to copyright, a 2 minute segment after the 2 Martin's tussle where one returns to the stage to finish "Tears are not Enough" had to be removed.

The bass player is absolutely killing it, and there are no decent shots of him. What a crime!
That was the first thing that made me like ABC, Haircut 100, FGTH, Re-Flex, Kajagoogoo, Spandau Ballet, Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music, and Duran Duran. Also their use of my instrument saxophone. 🎷

Agree, it's very odd as he seems to be in on the credits of some of the songwriting.. It's a fella called Mark Lickley, he's brilliant!.. Every time I hear these songs, the bass just climbs over it all.., amazing.. You don't get that feeling with Lexicon of Love II
The bass player was Mark Lickley's replacement part way through recording the album, Brad Lang. they share bass duties on the album but he steals the show!
One thing it’s impossible to argue with . The music. Finest album of the 1980s IMHO
My VHS is signed. Found it by chance in a Virgin Megastore

Thank you! My VHS of this died 20 years ago. Delightful, campy fun, and ABC at their creative apex. I defy anyone to watch this without a wry smile creeping over their face. And, the music, of course, is to die for!

What a phenomenal album and time to be in the business of introducing people to such as this. I had the time of my life and the Lexicon of Love was like Genesis in our Bible. It reeked of style and class. Yet I had never seen Mantrap, What a trip. Thanks for the flashback.

Thank you for this Laserdreams! I hadn't watched "Mantrap" in years and it brought me so much joy to watch it again. The Lexicon of Love was one of my favorite albums in the 80s because I love the lyrics. ABC was and is certainly underrated. Thanks again!

yay. thank you for posting this. the movie is out of print and finding a copy to buy is impossible now. l used to have a copy of this l bought 20 years ago, but my house burned down in 2015...

Thank you! I had the VHS and transferred it to DVD. That has since been stolen with many of my DVDs and 1980's vhs music tapes. Thank God for this.
They did re-release but the box set it was in was out of the price range for a lot of us, especially in this economy. Mr. Fry's seen the future but we can't afford it.

@@csfan65 I don't know if it is NTSC or PAL, pretty sure it's a region zero disc. I keep hoping that whatever the format that it eventually finds its way into a more affordable way to acquire it (much the same with Mr, Fry's autobiography that's coming out this fall, again, just unaffordably priced).

It's nice to see James Villiers doing what he did best - playing the effete villain with an aristocratic air. They should have kept him as Bill Tanner in the Bond films.

@laserdreams Dunno if you are interested, but Mantrap is being issued on remastered Bluray at last. The bad news is that you have to buy it along with limited edition 4 vinyl records , they are re*issuing Lexicon next month (Aug)

@@Laserdreamz yes , please be VERY careful if you buy it. as they are selling **TWO different* Blu rays , the one sold along with the 4x Vinyls DOES contain Mantrap + two other videos. BUT the standalone Bluray DOES NOT have the video - a right con. Thankfully I asked the company in advance of the release and they refunded my pre-order , but I know many fans will get caught by it.. Trading standards need to be alerted here..

Calling a 52-minute movie a "short" is a massive lie :p
Not really, with most movies being 90 minutes or more. While it's not a 10 to 30 minute short, it's only at the longer end of a short film.
