    It never fails to impress me, this song. The lyrics are mostly simple and direct, but “tell me why you would lay there, and revel in your abandon” is Dylan or Joni Mitchell writing. And then in the second iteration he squishes more words into it: “who knows maybe you taken and tied up and held for ransom.” He only got better from here. RIP

    actually, that sweet guitar is lead guitarist mike campbell, tom played rhythm.
    this was from tom and the heartbreakers breakthrough '79 smash hit 3rd album DAMN THE TORPEDOES.
    when they were trying to write and record this, tom was being sued by MCA records. the label was trying to gain possession of the master tapes of the sessions and tom had to literally HIDE them, move them around, anything to keep them away. that's the lyrical inspiration for "refugee" - he'd been kicked around by big corporate labels, lawyers, and terrible contracts. THIS was tom's response.
    you can feel the defiance throughout this whole album.
    other songs from DAMN that are a must - listen:
    "don't do me like that"
    "here comes my girl"
    "you tell me"
    "louisiana rain"
    DAMN THE TORPEDOES is a masterpiece, their finest album. i miss you every day, tom ❤

They had a lot of great hits such as "Breakdown", "American Girl", "The Waiting", "Learning To Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Don't Do Me Like That", "You Got Lucky", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know", "Listen To Her Heart" etc. In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits. No; Damn the Torpedoes involved a LOT of re-recording, mixing, overdubbing along with having to hide the tapes every night because he was in a lawsuit with his record company. Some of his later albums were done that way, but not this one.

    • @oboogie2
      @oboogie2 Год назад

      @@keithosmond5730 I didn't say they didn't do any overdubs, I said they didn't record it as just track by track overdubs (like often done today). They did play together as a band when recording the basic tracks, and then would overdub parts later. That's why it took them 80 or so takes of "Refugee" before Mike Campbell finally walked out for a few days.

So it turned out it was a new song added to a Greatest Hits CD. So I got the CD and all I wanted to listen to was 'Refugee'. People would want me to put on 'Last Dance' and I'd be like no no listen to this(Refugee) it's a better song. People just looked at me like I was crazy. Well I still think it's a better song, so screw it. 🙂

    Asia! You did catch the melody and you never lost it. I could listen to and watch you sing along with that all day long. Just wonderful. I'm pretty convinced there is no sexier woman walking the planet, other than perhaps Jessica Lange when she was young 😀 And, BJ, dude you totally crack me up. You're so into it and always right on top of it but you're also really funny and I love it. You guys rock as usual and this is one of my favorite songs by him because it is literally the first one I ever heard by him.
    It was in high school, and back at that time in the late seventies you would have these alarm clock radios right and they were the latest technology, laugh. You could set it to either do a beeping alarm rather than the old school wind up the clock and it does a ringing Bell mechanically and all that? But now you could do that or you could like set it to your radio station of choice and then when the alarm went off it would be that radio station and you could further set the volume so you could even like blast it and put it on the other side of the room if you had a hard time waking up so you'd have to crawl over there halfway asleep to hit the snooze button. Or, you could just have it kind of ease into your Consciousness and wake up gently and I tried all of those of course. And I had done that with the local rock station and it wasn't really loud, it was medium. And I woke up to the beginning of this song and somehow coming out of sleep, everything about it just grabbed me. As a musician, who doesn't like a minor obviously. And just everything about it the call and answer which kind of goes back to blues or gospel Style and just the affect in his voice which by the way was heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, and just everything about it and the words I just immediately fell in love with it and I ran out and bought that album the next day. He's got so many great songs over the years but this is still my favorite. I'm so happy that you guys reacted to it.
