-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
FINALLY, we found a Tom Petty track that we LOVE!!! What’s next for us to hit from him?! 🙌🏻🔥
Breakdown, The Waiting are 2 bangers
How about a slower one from Tom Petty just for a change of pace, one of my favourites is "Southern Accent" a slow but really tasty song, Keep Safe Keep Strong Keep ROCKING🦘🦘🦘🦘
I already posted this below, but for your next Petty song, I recommend "The Waiting".
Breakdown
There are a few but Breakdown is probably the choice
Saying Petty is “cool”, is like saying water is “wet.”
What that man said...!!!!
I'm still have a hard time accepting this, we finally found a Tom Petty song we love? My one daughter watching silence of the lambs with me and my wife her first time seeing that. She was maybe 15. We all know this movie is intense but Tori was mature. One part the girl who is kidnapped who ends up in the house in the well well before she gets kidnapped she's driving and singing Tom's American Girl. My daughter stops the DVD and goes who's singing this,it's great. First time she heard that but she knew , like we all did. More than I can say for these 2 guys. They are pretenders. Sure some they never heard. But. TP. NAH don't believe it. Unless they were Amish
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ARE American rock n’ roll at its finest. Period.

yes
Next Tom Petty: Breakdown, Don't Do Me Like That, American Girl, You Got Lucky, or Room at the Top (VASTLY underrated!)
They've already done American Girl.
@@larrywilliams1372 I'm surprised, given Alex's statement that he wasn't impressed with Petty before this song. I knew they'd listened to some Full Moon Fever era stuff, and could understand his take.
The last time A&A did Tom Petty It Was American Girl. The Rest Of Your Song Suggestions Are Top Notch.
Breakdown!
Good list!
Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty, stop draggin my heart around, great duet! their voices are so good together.
Tom Pettys explanation for "Refugee" is someone who jumps from one relationship to another, never feeling at ease.. Always searching for love and acceptance, even amid abuse and alienation. He has words of wisdom in his songs.
true
"I Won't Back Down" Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers
🔥🔥🔥
Yeah good pick but I think next they should hit breakdown
I Won't Back Down is not a Heartbreakers song, it was on Tom's first solo album, Full Moon Fever.
Speaking of Bob Dylan - Dylan, Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynde had a super group for a while in the late 80s called The Traveling Wilburys. You should check them out sometime.
"Tweeter and the Monkeyman were hard up for cash..."
@@ravenwind1062 Stayed up all night selling cocaine and hash......
That's a Patreon full album candidate right there. My favorite album of the 80's and a perfect listen from start to finish.
Yes absolutely!!!
@@ravenwind1062 Check out the Headstones cover of the song. Very different.
“I Wont Back Down” and “Mary Janes Last Dance” are definite top 5 songs from him.
Don't do me like that, Breakdown, You got lucky
Yes, 3 good choices, strong follow-up.
@@Great-Documentaries Breakdown is my favorite.
Don’t do me like that
You wreck me

MaryJane’s last dance
AMERICAN DREAM PLAN B (2014)
Tom Petty was at his best in the 70s , I hope ANDY AND ALEX dont give it to the 80s , like they have many songs before from the 70s
@@oliviacat7752 One of my favorite videos on MTV!
Gotta do American Girl, Last dance with Mary Jane, You Don’t know how it feels, and Don’t do me like that
Tom Petty - "Don't Do Me Like That" is a must. Easily one of Petty's best from his earlier days.
This album slammed the world. What an entrance. Still my fav. Tom was amazing. R.I.P.
Mike Campbell, lead guitar, has one of the most distinct sounds in rock and roll. Mike plays guitar on Don Henley's "The Boys Of Summer" and you can clearly hear it's Mike playing. Great rabbit hole to head down.
Thankyou for that bit of info. Love Mike Campbells work.
My classmate in high school. Nicest guy you’d ever want to meet. So proud of his success, he deserves it!
@@cindyp1033 That's so cool!
Mike actually wrote the song as well as playing on it because Tom passed on it which he later regretted.
@@tennesseehusky I never knew that. Thankfully Tom passed on it, it would have sucked big time compared to Henley's version.
Finally someone does Refugee. Personal favorite of Petty's. Great lyrics. Glad you guys enjoyed it too.
Ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Don't Do Me Like That" "Here Comes My Girl", "Even The Losers", this album is very well crafted, which is why it stands the test of time.
Damn straight!👍👍
Even the losers is soooooo underrated!
In my opinion, as good as all three of those songs are off of that album I like Louisiana Rain and Century City more than any of those.
@@joegilbert8010 And I relate to it sooooo much!
@@joegilbert8010 for real its such a good song! damn the torpedoes is soo goood
Breakdown is the Yang to Refugee’s Yang. A must hear for musicians.
Breakdown, You Got Lucky, Don't Do Me Like That, same era all bangerz 🔥🔥🔥
I'd go with "Don't Do Me Like That." Super-catchy!
I was a DJ in the last days of vinyl. We wore the groove off this album. Every single song was in album rock radio rotation. This band was so fantastic, especially Benmont Tench on the keys and the one and only Mike Campbell on guitar -- a man who should be on every short list of the greatest guitarists of all time.
One summer this song wore a groove in my brain. 😂👍
And now Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell are working with the equally legendary Chris Stapleton.
@@garymaidman625 Wait, hold on...seriously?? That sounds like a match made in heaven!!
@@carlaharrington5120 it is. Cold is an amazing song, as if Arkansas, but in a different way. Both songs show off the talents of both men.

@@tompetty6791 except that you're dead.
For your next Petty song, I recommend "The Waiting". Another good one is "Even the Losers", but that one is a semi-deep cut, so you could do it on your next deep cut livestream.
"Even the Losers" is one of his best for sure.
Incredible songs, both. They are similarly themed to my mind. Waiting for that roll of the dice that you know is eventually going to come. Even the losers roll a seven every now and then. Waiting for that roll just kills
Two top tier songs The Waiting and Even the Losers. Nice choices. He has so many tunes. Pumped them out like the Beatles for a couple years
I concur!
even the losers is good and yes to the waiting is like his top 5 best songs
I was fortunate enough to see Tom Petty in the 70's, very early in his career. He was the opening act for Rush at the Tower Theater in Philadelphia during the 2112 tour. What a memory.
That was an awesome nite! Go Phils, Go Birds!
When this album came out I was working at a Marie Callender's restaurant. My fellow bakers and cooks would be in the back prepping all the food and baking morning pies before opening, and singing along with this song. Except in our version we sang "You don't have to live like a Recipe." Because that's what we did all day: followed recipes. Stupid... I know. But it amused us.
😆😆😆
When working as a landscaper we would change the words in Good Vibrations to Good Viburnums. Silly, but helped us get through the day.
@@jeffmartin1026 That's what makes songs great. When they help get you through the day!!! Petty does that.
Ah haha .. luv this!!
Sometimes the stupid things are the most fun.
The whole “Damn the Torpedoes “ album was complete fire. I played the crap out of that thing when it came out.
Refugee was his huge breakout. So tight, not a wasted note.
I think don't *do me like that* was his Breakout.
I could be wrong cuz I was a fan of his since *American Girl*
@@michaelt.b264 Don't Do Me Like That is a great song. That's what they should play next
@@Maisie9798 I have no problem with that. I'm partial to the Southern Accents album.
I think A'nA would really enjoy; "you don't know how it feels" from Wildflowers.
Bill shite!!! Break Down was it.
TP n' t' hbs only had 1 billboard hot 100 us top 10 hit: Don't do me like that. Tom Petty solo only had one: Freefallin'. Breakdown didn't even chart on its initial release top 40 at best. Great song. They had lots of billboard Rock chart hits shitload of radio songs and in my mind probably the greatest American band of all time.
Plus my family hails from the Florida 'Villes (Gaines' and Jackson')
flashback to sitting in a candlelit room high on quaaludes, smoking weed, listening to Tom Petty. good old days. also, how am I not dead? 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
Benmont Tench is a legend on keyboards, and this track proves it.
Tench and Campbell are both so unbelievably tasty. Not looking to go big, just perfect.
@@frantz2000 Truth. Dynamics= Everything
@@rollomaughfling380 Benmont Tench is just one of the greatest names in Rock and Roll. It is different.
When Tom Petty first met Benmont Tench, he asked "are you THE Benmont Tench?" Like there could be 2 keyboard players with that name.
@@billwaters7615"you're that boy Genius from the TV." -Tom Petty on meeting Benmont Tench for the first time.
My fav Petty too. Have a vivid memory of walking to school (jr high) when this had just come out, with my best friend, singing this at the top of our lungs (presumably very badly, but enthusiastically).
“Rebel” and “Here Comes My Girl” as well as his duet with Stevie Knicks, “Stop Draggin My Heart Around”!
A&A has done the Duet With Stevie Nicks. However, the rest of your Song Suggestions are really good.
I have that double live Album! I was Born a Rebel! My favorite Petty song!
Here Comes My Girl is so great!!
Refugee is still my favorite Tom Petty song just because I love it musically, but also, it's the first one that really resonated with me. It came out when I was in high school and I had one of those ubiquitous clock radios that you could set the alarm to wake you up with whatever radio station you set it to. So sometimes I would set it to pop music stations that I mostly hated because that actually did a better job at waking me up, but for some reason, I had it set to a favorite rock station, and I came up out of my dreams very groggy and sleepy to this song. And it immediately wormed its way into my consciousness and I have loved it so much ever since. I went out and bought the Damn The Torpedos Album the very next day.
That really takes me back. I think this song wormed it’s way into my brain on a late night drive, but there were so many songs I woke up to that still stick with me. The music of that time was so important and really helped us feel less alone.
"Breakdown" will hook you with the licks.
Have a great day, guys.
And it only has one verse and you don't even notice it.
If you want that scream, the chorus of “free falling”
If you like the "Bob Dylan" sound of Tom you need to check out The Traveling Wilburys. It's Dylan, Petty, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra) and Roy Orbison. You will not be disappointed.
Like I keep telling them...if you like that Bob Dylan sound....listen to Bob Dylan..... F.F.S! I mean seriously, they haven't listened ANY Dylan yet?
"Who knows maybe you were kidnapped, tied up
, taken away and held for ransom." - One of the greatest lines in rock 'n roll. I'd humbly recommend Tom Petty's "The Waiting".
Love love Tom Petty! 🙂 Totally agree, you'll dig Breakdown! Seeing him perform live is amazing. Have a great weekend fellas! 😊🌺✌
Hey Lisa... used to party at this house called "Petty's Pad" in G'ville... i doubt he ever actually lived there.. lol

Breakdown is a must I would also add American Girl, Here Comes My Girl & I Need to Know. If you want something out of the box checkout Don't Come Around Here No More a collaboration with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics
Breakdown was my first Tom Petty Song and I was hooked. You should do it live. He has his "Queen" moment. Excited for your review.🎵🎶🎵 It's alright if you love it, it's alright if you don't.!!🎶🎵🎶
I heard this tune just 2 days ago on KBCO radio out of Boulder... on my way to the pot store. I love it ~ ♥ Life is good.
"Refugee" is my all-time favorite Tom Petty song. RIP, Tom.
You stole my comment, so I'll just say : DITTO!

Amazing song.

next to breakdown TOTALLY AGREE
His breakthrough album. Check out “Even the Losers” and “Don’t Do Me Like That”
My two favourites
Remember, Tom Petty was an artist that was getting radio airplay after three consecutive years of non-stop disco. Rockers were starved for some solid rock n’ roll and Petty delivered. Probably explains some of the devotion his long-time fans have.

Those disco years were rough dude.
Mary Jane's Last Dance. The intro is epic! TP added it to a contractually required greatest hits as a throwaway. It turned out o be one of his biggest hits.
Great song.
Not a big Tom Petty fan, that’s his best to me.
The guitar in that song is fantastic, great riff and perfect tones, think they would like the harmonica too.
It's a MUST
That's by far my favorite of his later songs. Yeah the guitar work is epic.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are as good as ANY band ever and their catalog is deep and diverse. RIP Tom. We miss you.
This won against breakdown, but I hope thye get to it
💯
Sooner rather than later please
@@mikethemotormouth yeah
To keep the momentum up, “Breakdown” should definitely be next. It is also a basically perfect rock song (its only flaw is it’s not long enough).
Absolutely, but for me it's twice as long as it needs to be.... and you know which half we both like.
Great reaction, fellas. The whole "Damn the Torpedoes" album is a true rock classic and worthy of a full album reaction.
full speed ahead
One of the best ALBUMS Of the Late 70s
The reference to Dylan is interesting. They hung out with each other quite a bit.
Definitely hit Breakdown next. I am particularly fond of the live version. But either way....Breakdown next.
I agree. The live version of Breakdown would be great. The interaction with the crowd would be worth it.
Live version blows away the studio track! Anthology collection
i fell in love with tom petty in 1976, although it was a one-sided relationship. still, played "tom petty and the heartbreakers" until i wore the grooves out. "american girl" hit me. and, later on in his career -- much later -- came "i won't back down" and it reminded me of my old love for him.
tip: check out the traveling wilburys, and you will learn just how much tom's voice sounds like bob dylan's. and how they each sound separately, together. plus one or two other musicians of middling fame and accomplishment. starter song: "handle with care."
Check out "Even the Losers", "Here Comes my Girl" or "Listen to Her Heart"... A+ all. Petty's later stuff isn't nearly as good as his earlier material imho
Agree. Great suggestions! I think the secret to loving Tom Petty is to start at the beginning, yes? His debut album is mindblowingly great. The later songs are top notch, but didn't have the same punch, if ya know what I mean. He was a pure artist as a songwriter and in performance. :)
All good choices.
Lettin' you go is another great tune.
I would beg to differ. His early stuff established him and the Heartbreakers, but Wildflowers is my favorite TP album. And there is some great material on the albums Southern Accent, Full Moon Fever and Into the Great Wide Open. Every time I hear a Tom Petty song I want to go listen to more of him. He has such a great catalog.
Three great choices!
Yes, finally! Love me some Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. "Here Comes My Girl", "Breakdown", "American Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That". Oh my goodness, pure bliss!
You could do Petty for weeks, so many great songs. Very soundtrack of your life kind of musician. He put out solid songs you heard on the radio for decades.

Lol, my husband thought I was stroking out with all the head banging I was doing. Love me some Petty! Great reaction!
At the risk that Alex will hate it, “You Got Lucky” is ESSENTIAL among Petty’s early 80s output. I happen to think Petty transitioned his sound extremely well to 80s productions…not unlike ZZ Top’s transition but a bit less commercial. You have to do this one.
It’s not exactly typical 80’s in my opinion. I don’t think he’ll hate it. It and “Big Log” by Robert Plant have a similar feel to me.

In my Top 5 favorite Petty songs! Hit "Even the Losers", off the same album, some time.
My favourite Petty song.
Yeah, I wish they’d gone a little deeper into the catalogue than ‘Refugee.’
This is another “perfect” album, not a track you’d want to skip. His early stuff is so much better.
Next for Tom Petty: Breakdown, Free Fallin, Mary Jane's Last Dance, American Girl, Even the Losers,Loses, Listen to her heart, I need to know.
“I need to Know," definitely!
❤️ Mary Jane's Last Dance but I think they should save that song until A&A have listened to all of TP's discography.
Andy mentioned "Breakdown" from their Debut & Self Entitled Album Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a good choice for the next Reaction Song.
Awesome reaction!! Andy and Alex, I was hoping this TP song would make you a fan. That's Mike Campbell wailing on the guitar. Tom Petty exceeds as a singer/songwriter, musician and frontman, and the whole "Damn The Torpedoes" album is amazing. You still must react to his earlier stuff, like "American Girl"and "Breakdown", the latter being the banger. He'd love you saying he sounded like Bob Dylan. They worked together and were admirers of one another. Cheers!💛
Another few fun Petty's is INTO THE GREAT WIDE OPEN, YOUR SO BAD, kinda funny lyrics. DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE, They had so many good songs guys, he will be one of your favorite bands if you let him lol
Mike Campbell, the guitarist for the Heartbreakers, is currently in the process of selling some of his guitars and amps on Reverb.
I Won't Back Down, Don't Come Around Here No More, You Don't Know How It Feels, Free Fallin', Mary Jane's Last Dance... so many great Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker songs.
"Don't do me like that"
yes!
Tom Petty brings back great memories. I bought my younger brother and I tickets right up front at a Tom Petty concert at The Gorge Amphitheatre. Grandpa loaned us a convertible and we drove top down a couple hours to the concert. Good times, great concert.
Breakdown, Mary Jane's Last Dance --the Video! So great with Kim Bassinger! You have got to check out next for TP
Don Felder from the Eagles (Hotel California) gave Tom Petty guitar lessons in Gainesville when young.
and Van Zant threw beer bottles at em right?
Breakdown Live at the Wiltern next 👌🏻 Petty Magic.
Andy & Alex are so good beyond their years. They brought back my experience with this song when I heard it as it came out - already 5yrs a refugee and kicked around as a son for over 10yrs. One of the 70s last gasp as the 80s dawned.
Got to do “American girl” it was a song from the first album that almost made him a star. Refugee made him a superstar
Read an article a long time ago about a conversation between Tom Petty and Bob Dylan surrounding song writing. Dylan supposedly said to Tom that one thing he always strived for was that every line within the lyrics should be able to stand on its own AS a song title.
I think it was taken to heart by Tom... excellent advice.
Hey guys TP was a great performer.... please put Traveling Wilburys ....End of the line.... in a poll.... thank you in advance
A&A definitely need to check out the Wilburys. End of The Line is great.
End of the Line had such a poignant video, too, because Roy was already gone
Really, every song was good. RIP Roy, George, Tom
Tom Petty is a legend! RIP! The band on this track, TP - guitar, vocals, Mike Campbell - lead guitar, Belmont Tench - keyboards, Ron Blair - bass, Stan Lynch - drums.
Breakdown was a signature piece for Petty. Very strong
Idk why but this song always gives me goosebumps. Such a great jam!
Tom petty is an incredible song writer
Agreed! One of the best!
My favorite Tom Petty song is "Even the Losers", off the same album as this one. The lyrics just hit me really hard back when it came out.
Now you need to check Tom out as part of the super group "The Traveling Wilburys". The group includes, Tom, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan. I'll recommend their songs "Handle With Care" and "End Of The Line".
This was their breakthrough album. Honestly, I liked the first two records a bit more. I loved the raw feel to those early songs, like American Girl, Listen to her heart, I need to know and of course Breakdown. The Heartbreakers are about as good a rock band that ever was. They rocked for 40 years….longer if you include the Mudcrutch days. Tom, Mike and Benmont were like brothers. Tom left us too soon!!
I also love Wildflowers. Rick Ruben is a genius. I love the song, Honey Bee. Such a loose fun jam. You want wailing guitars? That song delivers. But there are too many to mention. I would recommend the live Anthology. Also from Wildflowers is Good to be King. The live version on Anthology is fucking EPIC.
Yes Breakdown or Listen to Her Heart
Would love to hear “Change Of Heart”, “American Girl”, “Free Fallin”, and “Jammin’ Me” all great Tom Petty tunes.
This is a good 'un. If you don't like this one, I won't know what to say. It's simply inconceivable. Edit: This is S tier. I don't normally critique your rating because it seems kind of silly, but the way you guys were digging this song, you gotta give it S tier. 8 bajillion times better than Ram Jam's Black Betty. I'm insulting Tom Petty by even having to say that.
Good Princess Bride reference
Well, Andy initially gave EJ’s "Love Lies Bleeding" a B+, so give it time.
@@Yikes5824 🤣🤣 So perhaps this song will be a grower? I'm mostly kidding about their rating. They loved the song. That's what matters. The whole rating thing is pretty much beside the point for me, but I couldn't resist dropping in that Ram Jam S rating.
@@burmajones803 I think that shows how much they are growing, even since Ram Jam. It happens to most of us. I might have mentioned this to you, or someone else, I like John Mellencamp's music now more than I ever did before, and I'm way older than these guys. When you listen to more and more, and you become familiar with the background of an artist, song, or processes involved in making music happen, you get a better appreciation for it. You start to look for things you've missed, and sometimes you also go back and hear a song you once liked and it doesn't sound the same. Their ears are getting more finely tuned. So, one day I think Tom Petty will be a solid part of their repertoire.
@@susanklasinski1805 Susan's comment wins the Internet for the Day!

My favorite Petty song!!
Since the death of Tom Petty in 2017, Mike Campbell has formed a new band called The Dirty Knobs.
MC & TDK's does an unplugged version of the song, Refugee, which he co-wrote with TP. He slowed it down to more of a ballad. Totally different feel from the original version but very good in it's own right.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have their own niche in the world of music. Something special
I saw Petty on this tour. '79 was a great year in the SF Bay Area for music and concerts. Petty,Pat Travers,Rush,38 Special and all the Day On The Green concerts.
When you listen to a band when they're young, they have something to prove. When you listen to them later, after massive success, they have nothing to prove. So you get different kinds of songs.
And usually very laid back (think, Clapton).

Funny you should say....but during an interview Tom Petty said he patterned his singing style after Bob Dylan. Funny because they both were in the Traveling Wilburys together. Another super super group you should react to. Jeff Lynne (ELO), George Harrison (Beatles), Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, more...
Runnin' Down A Dream was released on the 1989 album Full Moon Fever
I was lucky. This was the first Tom Petty song I ever heard which hooked me for life. Glad you guys connected with this one!
Yeah definitely do "Breakdown" next for Petty. And if you need more after that : "You got lucky" and "Stop Draggin my Heart Around" featuring Stevie Nicks.
I gained completely respect for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers when I saw the tour with Dylan. They opened, did a complete set and then returned as Dylan’s backup band. Flawless!
I saw a cable special where Petty said he expected to just be the opening band, but Dylan insisted they stay on stage and take equal billing. And they played together on each other's songs. And that concert series got extended from just a few shows in Australia to a massive world tour.
Dylan was a class act. And that concert was historical.
That was the only concert I ever went to when I was young. Totally worth it.
Great live band.... saw them with Bon Jovi and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers blasted them off the stage ✌😎
I saw them in Boston in the late 80's...shortly after Tom's house burned down. Tom mentioned to the audience at one point, something like... "I guess ya'll heard my house burned down and the fire took just about everything..." then he holds up his Rickenbacker and says "But it didn't get this!"
"Even The Losers" That song was pure hope-juice for us blue collar kids in the 80s
