  • *Disclosure, the GLC 43 AMG featured in this video is a 2020 model year but there have been no updates for the 2022 model year since 2020.
    The BMW X3 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC primarily dominate the compact luxury SUV market. It’s a cutthroat segment in which auto manufacturers need to stay ahead of the curve to be relevant. So for the 2022 model year, the BMW X3 received a few mid-cycle updates (LCI, Life Cycle Impulse as BMW calls it) to keep it top of mind for consumers. The Mercedes-Benz GLC on the other hand hasn't seen any major changes since 2020. So is it still good enough to take on the updated X3?
    The engine in the 2022 BMW X3 M40i was actually updated last year. It is a 3.0L inline-6 that can produce 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque (284 kW & 500 Nm). It produces enough grunt to get the 1,992 ks (4,392 lbs) body to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The 3.0L bi-turbo V6 under the hood of this Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG 4Matic packs a pretty good punch. It produces 385 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Despite the SUV tipping the scales at just over 1,900 kg, it can officially accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Although, some other auto publications have seen the 0-100 km/h sprint finished in under 4.5 seconds. So this is a brisk compact SUV.
    The 2022 BMW X3 M40i starts at $68,000 CAD ($57,800 USD). This particular demo vehicle has a price of $82,040 CAD ($64,995 USD) but it is not fully loaded. There are still a few stand-alone features that can be optioned. By comparison, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG 4Matic has a starting price that is just $100 off the price of the BMW X3 M40i at $67,900 CAD ($59,900 USD). This demo GLC 43 AMG was optioned to the tune of $82,990 CAD ($73,475 USD). Still not fully loaded.

    My wife and I just finished test driving the 2022 GLC 300, 2022 GLC 43 AMG, and the 2023 BMW X3 back to back in the same afternoon. Our thoughts are similar to this video... we found the Mercedes interior to be far nicer than the BMW, and much more comfortable. The GLC 43 AMG was the right blend of power, comfort, and fun factor *for us*. In addition, right now our local Mercedes dealers have quite a few 2022 GLC 43 AMG's available and are willing to deal on price, whereas BMW is now focused only on 2023 models and is not willing to deal on price. We ended up purchasing a GLC 43 AMG that was almost fully optioned, added the Mercedes winter tire package (rims and rubber) and a few other items, all in including Canadian tax was the same price as a similar BMW X3m40i without tax, tires, or anything else. In other words, the Mercedes was close to $10k less. No brainer for us.

    I have a 2020 M40i and a 22 GLC43 w/ the AMG performance exhaust. I've also had a 21 SQ5 and a 2017 Macan S. All great cars except for the SQ5, unless you don't like driving. If you want a driver's car with all the utility the X3 M40i wins.

    • @MGReviewsBlog

      Thanks for the insight! How was the Macan S compared to the X3?

    • @anw9485
      @anw9485 2 года назад +9

      @@MGReviewsBlog The Macan S was definitely a great car. I had 2 years between the Macan S and the M40i so I never had a direct/immediate comparison between the two. The 2017 Macan S only had 335HP if I'm not mistaken so was underpowered at the time. I know that Porsche ended up trickling down their engines to the lower trims in recent years. We ended up trading in the Macan S for a 718 Cayman. But from what I can remember, the Macan S drove great and sounded great. It had much less cargo space though because of the fastback design and like all Porsches the "cockpit" is pretty cramped. I also had a 2018 X1 at the time and even that was roomier than the Macan. For the M40i, SQ5 and GLC43, I owned all 3 cars at the same time so have a pretty good day-to-day comparison of them. If I could only pick one, it would be the M40i. Plenty of power, handles great, sounds great, lots of tech and plenty of storage. It's the best all-rounder in my opinion. The only improvement that the M40i or BMW in general could work on is their digital gauge cluster. There's just way more customization with MB and Audi's.

    • @andreipretorius92
      @andreipretorius92 Год назад +2

      @@anw9485 great feedback. We test drove all of those and even the genesis. The Porsche was nice but felt very cramped and loaded with buttons, wasn’t what we were looking for. The Mercedes’ was nice but too pricey and 1st and 2nd gear shifts weren’t the smoothest. The Audi, as you said, was very underwhelming. The bmw just had the balance of performance and luxury while having a reasonable price tag. The bmw ride is slightly harsh but not back breaking. The power is unbeatable, this thing moves and looks good doing it. Very happy with the bmw

    • @anw9485
      @anw9485 Год назад +3

      @@andreipretorius92 Hit the nail on the head there! I've had 2 modern Porsches, all their cabins are very cockpit-like and cramped. I like to refer to the Porsche interior's button layout as "the graphing calculator" because it reminded me of the TI-83 graphing calculators I had in high school, where I didn't understand what half the buttons did! Yes, the GLC43 is very nice and yes pricey, I ordered mine and waited 8-months and actually did without the HUD to keep the cost down. I do miss the HUD though as my M40i does have it. And you're right, the MB 10-spd tends to be a little clunky at low speed. It's hard to get a smooth start off from a complete-stop if you're just trying to drive normal. So again, if I were to only have 1 of these vehicles the M40i wins. It just does everything and does it damn well. It is a bit stiffer but that's a sign of a "driver's car" and having the types of cars that I've had, it doesn't bother me. And that growl/grunt sound the M40i makes on up-shifts when you go full throttle from a full-stop in Sport+ is just so good! I know you know what I'm talking about. lol. The GLC43 makes a nice crackle in that situation and the SQ5 seemed to give you just a tiny bit of noise as a consolation prize for your efforts. All these brands have a different "ethos" when it come to car making and it really shows in how their vehicles drive and perform.

    I got the ‘21 GLC 43 ~5 months ago and let me tell you, it is an ansolute beast of a vehicle. It looks so muscular in person, and you have so much power and torque at your feet. It feels like a luxurious space ship at night in the interior, and the optional performance exhaust makes the car sound like a lion whenever you want to turn it on.
    My only complaint is once in a blue moon the transmission gets kinda twitchy in 1st or 2nd gear and hold revs as if you need to accelerate, but after a few days you’ll get used to it and learn how to manage it. Definitely one of the best vehicles I’ve driven.

    Choosing which model comes down to personal tastes and preferences.
    The BMW is sportier and faster, while the MB is slightly more luxurious and I liked their controls better.
    Price wise the BMW is the much better value.

      I currently have a 20 X3 M40i, 22 GLC 43 and previously had a 21 SQ5 and 17 Macan S. The SQ5 is a very nice car. Beautiful seats and comfortable. But it lacks a lot of storage space and is the tamest of all 4 vehicles. if you like driving, you won't like the SQ5. It doesn't sound as good as the other 3 cars and has the least horsepower(except for the 17 Macan S). For example, The SQ5 has the same exact ZF transmission as the M40i but it's way watered down. It always wants to shift early, even in Dynamic/sport mode. The M40i on the other hand, while in Sport+ will hold the shift all the way to near redline. BMW tunes the transmission to be aggressive even though it's the same transmission in the SQ5. The M40i wants to play. The SQ5 wants to go back to sleep. The Audi has fake exhaust tips too, unless you option the sport exhaust. The transmission thing and fake exhaust kinda shows you that Audi doesn't really have driving in mind and that's ok. Just depends what YOU are looking for.

      @@jabelee2030 Honestly, all 4 of those cars will do that. But in my opinion, the X3 M40i is definitely the best all-arounder. It's got plenty of power on tap. The only car with more torque and just 3 more HP than the BMW is the MB but the BMW still manages a faster 0-60 on paper. Has more passenger space and storage utility than the other 3 cars. Sounds great, drives great and has the best MPG of all 4. It's also the cheapest when similarly spec'd. Also, the fact that only BMW includes the first 3 years of service is a game changer. I believe Audi offered the first service for free. Another thing that bugged me about the SQ5 is that it doesn't give you live tire pressure and temperature readings like the other 3. I believe you need to step up to a RS model to get live tire pressure/temp display.

      I personally like vehicles that offer a blend of comfort and performance which is why I chose the Merc. Is it a compromise? Sure. But that's just my taste. Like I said in the video, the BMW is a better to drive performance SUV of the two.

      I had new 2022 GLA 45 AMG after 100 miles ...lemon. Then I bought new 2022 GLC 43 AMG, many problems, traded in after 13000 miles with rattle coming from the engine when cold, steering problem etc. Then I decided to give one more try and bought a new 2023 GLA45 AMG...700 miles later... Mercedes Buyback/lemon. Drove the new GLC 2024 AMG 43... I liked it, but I am scared with that Mercedes reliability. Then I drove 2024 BMW X3M40i.....bought it right away. Silky smooth and comfortable ride. Also better suited for tall drivers and passengers, by a huge margin.

    The x3 does not have the same engine. There are significant differences between the b58 and s58

    • @MGReviewsBlog
      @MGReviewsBlog  11 месяцев назад

      It has the same engine in the sense that they're both a 3.0L inline-6. I know the B58 is a single turbo while the S58 is twin-turbo. I know the B58 has a smaller bore and longer stroke than the S58. But most people of this car couldn't give 2 cents about details like that. I generalized it.

    U.S. standard system is more logical. Its how many miles per gallon not how many gallons per 30 miles or whatever. It makes more sense to say how far a vehicle can go based on a standard fuel amount instead of how much fuel based on a standard distance. Because distance is easier to conceive than an odd number of litres.

So then the MSRP would be even higher. It's what Governments do to protect their labour force and get more jobs created by the companies within their countries so that the politicians looks better when it comes time to vote. BMW styling is just bad these days. Too many arbitrary shapes inside and out for no reason. Very Japanese-ish. Unfortunately, the '24 GLC 43 has (will have) a turbo four. It also lacks buttons and knobs, a stupid direction the automakers continue to pursue.
