It’s after 3am and I’m on day five of being diagnosed with dry socket. It’s so hard to do anything, to sleep or concentrate when you’re in so much pain. 😣 I did everything by the book but two days after the extraction I started to get pain into my jaw and neck. I went back to the dentist and she cleaned it out and packed it and gave me antibiotics. It felt so much better for a few hours. But I woke up today in so much pain and it’s now radiating into my cheek 😞

Hi I just had the same issue. I had my lower wisdom teeth removed on March 18th and had a dry socket on the left side. I kept going back to the oral surgeon because the pain medications weren’t working. I felt it in my neck, cheek and ear! It took about 15 days for me to get some relief and now I still feel a little pain at the extraction site but definitely not as bad. Make sure you’re rinsing with saltwater after every single meal and try to brush even if it’s painful to avoid infection. Good luck!

50-years ago they told patients to "keep the socket clean" and even handed out flush syringes. Which of course caused dry sockets. Treatment was simply to flush the socket, and pack it with paper stripping soaked in Clove Oil (now called Eugenol). This was done for three days. There was no curettage done. Pain relief was immediate after the first treatment.

It's been 8 days. How I avoided dry socket, this is WHAT I DID:
The injections and extractions didn't hurt, but I felt significant pressure when they pulled them out!!!
The doctor didn't really give me instructions aside from prescribing medication (for pain, swelling and antibiotics)
I kept biting the gauze for 2 hours until I arrived home. Don't speak please!!! just remain silent, FOCUS ON THOSE CLOTS!!!
Went to my bathroom, I took the gauze out very slowly from both sides...
I immediately drank my medication pills but tried to not swallow too hard!!! I was really scared of losing my clots ToT
then cleaned AROUND MY MOUTH with paper towel bc oh boy one side was still bleeding and everything felt a mess inside!!!
DID NOT WASH MY MOUTH WITH WATER OR ANYTHING after that, ONLY PUT NEW, CLEAN, DRY GAUZE TO BITE
(DO NOT INTRODUCE THE GAUZE INSIDE THE HOLES OR ANY DEEP!!! JUST BITE) AND WENT TO SLEEP in a sitting position.
please don't wash, rinse your mouth and don't eat for 1 day!!!! eat beforehand (A LOT, i ate and drank the most I could)
and use mouth wash before the procedure bc your mouth will feel gross the next day!!!
The second day I woke up (I slept for 7 hours maybe), I was not in pain, I took the two gauzes out again and the holes bled a bit.
I drank my medication very slowly with little water.
I did not wash at all but tried to dry my mouth and other teeth and gums with gauze as well except my premolars...
My mouth felt nasty. I was so anxious my clots would fall.
Anyways, the CLOTS were THERE, I was so happy!!! One side was still bleeding a bit though, so I thought I should keep biting a small gauze and don't speak for the rest of the day as well. (Do not bite hard if it's still bleeding a bit, just bite normally with your mouth closed)
The second day I drank soup only and ate mashed potatoes with my tongue basically...
At the end of the 2nd day I drank ensure advance and felt full.
The third day I got up, checked the clots (they were dark red) and just then I felt confident enough to rinse my mouth with salt, IT FELT SO GOOD.
I finally also washed my lower teeth with toothpaste very carefully and my front teeth as well. Do not rinse strongly, just let the water fall from your mouth corner.
End of third day I ate only soups, mashed potatoes, 2-3 ensure advance, nothing solid yet.
The fourth day I finally ate small pieces of chicken (but be careful cuz they get stuck) and since then, I started eating solid food little by little and rinsed with salt after eating my meals.
I did not eat rice until the 7th day, it keeps getting stuck!!!
And that's how I survived premolars extractions!!!

you shouldn't keep the gauze there for 2 hours, by then the blood clot can stick to the gauze and you can pull it out when you remove the gauze, 30mins is recommended, but an hour shouldn't be too risky.

Ive experienced dry socket 1 time… flat out the worst 30 minutes of pain while they were fixing it in my life… iv broke multiple ribs at the same time, torn tendons. Dry socket is on a whole different level… pretty much they purposely ripped out the stitches to make it bleed, then cleaned it out, then jammed a strip of stuff with clove oil and morphine down into the socket… the morphine didn’t come close to touching the pain… we did that process like 4 times in a week, absolutely horrible experience… don’t play games, don’t drink from a straw, smoke, vape, anything that can cause the clot to dislodge… it’s not worth it…

I believe I over treated mine. Had the worse pain a couple days after getting my upper wisdom extracted. Night time is the worst with the pain shifting to my side jaw and mouth then it causes a sore throat. Went back to the dentist she cleaned and added a clove antiseptic to the socket and it’s helping.

I had a tooth pulled almost 2 weeks ago and I’m in excruciating pain!!! Worst pain ever! The dental assistant told me that they knew I was going to have a dry socket because I didn’t bleed after my extraction because of all of the anesthetic used. The dentist refused stronger pain meds because he said they’re not writing prescriptions to get people high. (Like I wanted to ask what he was insinuating 😡) I’m so annoyed and in pain right now. Had a tooth pulled upper left 2md from the back. Largest tooth in the mouth. For 2 weeks i was in pain on tylenol and Motrin around the clock. The pain was so bad i was almost in tears. 14 days later i went to the dentist. No Dry socket but apparently it was packed with food so it wouldn't heal properly. Yes i brush twice a day but its kinda hard to brush a open hole in your mouth. They flushed it out witch hurt like hell, and caused instant bleeding. But 5 hours later and it already feels better. Crazy thing was they stiched the hole after removing the tooth and i still had problems.

Dry socket is NOT an infection as the video title suggest. Rather it is exposed bone due to loss of blood clot. Very painful but very easy to fix. Sometimes you can have a combination of post-extraction dry socket AND infection. But do not assume you have an infection or need antibiotics if you are diagnosed with dry socket.

What do you mean "after being packed?" Smell alone is not an indication of infection. Could be food trapped in socket, natural smells from healing tissues, ect. Smell accompanied with swelling, redness or pus are more firm indications of infection. Clots can turn dark maroon/almost black so not always a bad sign. Best to always check with dentist/surgeon who extracted tooth if any concerns.@@christineb7304

And also i got this bad taste from my saliva, not blood but the taste very weird. Then when i woke up the next day, there’s a bubble thing formed near the clot. And when i contacted the clinic, they said that the healing process not completely done and they told me to went to the dentist again. Then, the doctor said that i got dry socket.. i was very shocked XD the thing that i really scared after removing my tooth was that and didn’t expect i got it, since what i’ve in my mind about dry socket is different. So the doctor try to pop it, and then gave an antiseptic around it. I also didnt feel the pain when the doctor try to remove it. After he finished, i can feel a weird taste from before and it almost enter my throat and gave me zinc tablet and antibiotic 😂 So i dont know why this happen, but maybe because of my immune system weakened and also after tooth extraction, i’ve been bleeding almost 15 hours. 8 injections to numb every where, 4 in the cheek. Then two directly on each side of the gum surrounding the tooth. Took the dentist a good 50 minutes wrestling to try and remove the tooth ,but it only was half out! Due the thick and deep roots, he then had change his gameplan to cutting it into two pieces whilst the tooth was halfway out. I had no pain just a little stress due to the amount of effort he was putting in but it wasn't working! However let me tell you now once the numbing wore off the pain has gotten worse and worse. Pain meds aren't working. It's 3.45am I've been researching flat out on RUclips to try and help with the healing process and pain I'm experiencing. Be careful when you cough or sneeze. Honestly 5 days is a lot - usually past the time frame a dry socket forms. However, if the pain continues to grow, especially reaching your ear, eye, and temples, plus neck, definitely go in to see a doctor. Rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm salt water every day.
Oh, and make sure to stick to soft foods that are easy to swallow without chewing.

I can see everyone’s sharing their stories on pre/post treatment.
2 year ago roughly my second top left molar was screwed (I’d already had the nerve endings taken out) I’m in the U.k. and then went to a private dentist and had a root canal treatment with a crown. About 18 months later the crown fully came out whilst eating a harribo sweet! I couldn’t believe it!!! Anyway I go back to then dentist and they tell me it’s finished . they can cover it up for however long it will last but after that it needs to be taken out fully.
So after a few months of bottling it up and 2 days ago I arrive at the dentist for the removal. Procedure all goes well, took some time to get the thing out and apparently it had all broken up. Face felt like i’d been beaten up really bad as I had a filling done on the other side prior to that. I’m a smoker but I refuse to smoke right now because the hole looks a right mess! 24 years of age and it’s making me question my lifestyle and food choices from now on. The whole thing was bleeding dark red blood for 6 hours afterwards but after 24 hours it’s dried out and seems to be forming blood clot (I hope).
My question is to anyone reading this, my cheekbone has been inflamed for around 3-5 months now prior to this treatment. I rang the dentist back today and enquired about some antibiotics and they said i’m ok i don’t need them. The tragus part of my ear, that’s where it’s felt off now for months on end and i cannot describe it. Could I possibly have had dry socket for months without knowing and having no nerve endings in that tooth? I’m really confused i’ve had a bad taste / smell in my mouth for a few months now. Back to my ear near the tragus part where your cheek bone is has been slightly raised like a big solid lump . Especially compared to my other side which is completely normal. I just pray to god it’s not a dry socket!
I’d also like to add i’ve still a bad taste / smell in my mouth now after the treatment is significantly worse than before the treatment , which i experienced for a few months on and off.
Hope everyone else’s treatments go well & if anyone can possibly help me please !

@@ajinubabu6528 Mine wasnt that bad i dont know if its cos the nerve endings was taken out years before my root canal treatment. But the packet fell out 2 hour after they treated my dry socket. Tasted and stunk like shit lol. Been back on to solid foods over the last 2 week still rinsing with salt water as its healing but yeah never ever getting another root canal i dont think that helped my gum at all. You can see the side of the gum split where my root canal must've been clamped in. Rather just get implants next time

@@wayne0075 Long story short they gave me antibiotics the week after & it helped a lot. Strange thing now is my jaw / left side needs cracking almost everyday. Not a clue why or whats going on but the holes heeling nicely! Just trying to figure out why the jaw cracks in a morning when I open my mouth wide. It has to be done or I can only open my mouth 75%. Dentist acts like its nothing to worry about and completely fine although the crack seems to be getting louder and bigger. We'll see how it all plays out

I deserve to have dry-socket because I was smoking hierba and vaping delta 8 after extraction...and then on 4th day after extraction I coughed hard and it started bleeding (like it was when I left dentist after extraction)
As quickly as I could, i go gause and applied pressure until the bleeding stopped which didn't take too long...now I just need to keep heeding the instructions; but if I get dry socket I deserve it for not fully following instrucions!

@Marie Anny Oh dang...well if it helps, I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was around 12 or 13 and it went very smooth; don't remember any pain and I'm pretty sure they didn't put any stitches.
Also here last month I traumitized my bottom moller using a hybrid bike and some trusty concrete. Miraculously I was not in serious pain afterwards (and lucky for me I didn't hit higher up on my head because that likely could have caused a concussion or worse; which is real bad for people w/ my bleeding condidion)
I spent 3+ weeks like that because I couldn't find anybody that could see me soon enough and 2 or 3 other dentists fell through because they didn't want (or claimed to not have the proper 'tools') to operate on a Hemophiliac.
So somehow I went through all that time w/ half my moller hanging by a thread in my mouth (again miraculously without any serious pain or damage done to anything but my tooth - that I know of up to now at least), finally made it to the appointment date w/ an oral surgeon (not dentist) that was willing to operate on me...and everything has gone smooth since even though I didn't follow instructions as I'm sure you will.
They gave me an IV and put me out (if you're scared of needles ask if they have that ethyl chloride ((cold)) spray b/c I have to stick myself all the time though not w/ needles that big and I literally didn't feel a thing when they stuck the needle in.
Since you have phobia i would think you would not want to be conscious during the procedure so hopefully they'll put you out...then you'll just wake up feeling funny w/ a numb mouth and then you can have some soup and we'll pray that you don't get dry socket!
I hope your procedure goes super smooth and then afterwards you feel better going to the dentist!

My orthodontic adviced me to get 4 teeth out for braces. It's 22nd May 2022 today and I got one premolar extraction on 19th, second on 21st and third in due on 24th. I'm only drinking milk with blended cashews, almonds and seeds and vanilla ice cream. So far it's going and my blood has clotted very nicely. I'm just unable to brush my teeth! Think I have something similar but it's just a hole. Can't see inside or bone or anything just at bottom of my stitching so thinking the stitching came undo. It hurts so much that I cried badly. Been doing warm, salt and water rinse after every meal and been using the mouthwash they gave me 3 times a day as it's instructed on bottle. This side the dry socket was an impacted wisdom tooth with a pocket, could have possibly been infected so understandable the trauma could have caused this. The hole is like next to cheek/behind molar right in area where the extraction site was. Feel like I should go back but unsure as everywhere I look says it will heal on its own.
