    One of the saddest song I’ve ever heard, and one of the most beautiful.. although it’s quite dark, it could easily be a world-wide hit but unfortunately most people never heard about Epica and don’t know this gem.

      @@MrSh0110 The "weird" thing about it is, I know the lyrics are wrought with sadness and loss, and learning to live with it. But somehow I feel an uplifting - or should I say, purifying? - effect every time it rings out. It often brings up tears, but somehow does not leave me heavy, rather at peace. And in awe of Simone, naturally. :)

      Big G I think you described it perfectly. Sad & purifying indeed, not sad & depressing.
      Anyhow, the emotional depth of the lyrics, music and Simone’s singing is what makes this song so moving.

      @Big G and @MrSh0110 : Isn't that a great thread. Big G took the words from my mouth, actually. Learning to live with a loved one being in another world. Sad, purifying, liberating. This is what this song is all about. Thanks for being there, on this journey. Such a blessing.

    .. Mark Jansen says. “My favourite song was and still is ‘Kingdom of Heaven’. It has all the elements Epica stood for at the time, but even more so because it is dedicated to my grandmother who passed away while we were recording this album (Design Your Universe, 2009). It will always have a special meaning to me.” And not only to him. “Mark’s grandmother was a very important figure for the whole band”, Simone Simons says. “Her house was our rehearsal space from the beginning of Epica. She always greeted us with a smile and made sure we had everything we needed.” Simons dedicated “Tides of Time” to her, making it a very emotional album for Epica.

    Death is part of life, but I am still very angry, defeated and emotional in many different ways, because last november I lost my son. He was only 22 years old and in college. Its unfair to survive your own child. Only since April this year I was able to listen to music again. The music the lyrics and the sound of Simones voice makes me cry when i listen to this beautiful song. The lyrics make me cry , they also bring me comfort, knowing that I am not alone in this difficult process I am dealing with and that I am not the only person in the world who is having a hard time, even though it often feels that way. Thanks Guylain for playing this beautiful song, because i had never heard it before.

    This was the song that made fall in love with the band. I had the album "Consign to oblivion" in drawer for 2 years and even though i liked Simone vocals i stopped listening when the growling started. But then ran in this song and it was one of most beautiful and most accurate songs about grieve i have ever heard. I read that Simone wrote this song after her grandmother had passed away who was big support to her. Since i loved the lyrics so much i started paying more attention to them, including the growling. I soon figured out that when the growling is applied it always has function. I have yet have to run in to mindless simple love song of them. The musical arrange are done by Mark Jansen who goofs around a lot on stage and i had hard time believing him to able to do this. Then i ran in to a interview for Dutch visiting him at home. The moment he started to explain on how he build up the arrange layer by layer it all clicked. Actually all their albums are superb.
    If you do not mind adding one more song to the list then try "Once upon a nightmare" The song itself is based upon an old horrific Nordic fairy-tale transformed to a Poem by Wolfgang von Goethe (basically the German Shakespeare) called The Erlking (Der Erlkönig) . The musical buildup is like the soundtrack of a movie with of sense foreboding of the tragedy about to happen. The story is about a father racing through the night to get help for his sick son. That, in his fever-state, is having visions of goblin king trying to seduce him to enter the land of the dead. No growling in this song and Simone just sounds divine. The tragic conclusion makes this a piece of art. If you are not having goosebumps by the end of the song i would consult a doctor. :) Beneath you will find the original version and literal English translation of the poem mentioned. But here the link. ruclips.net/video/CPgZmfD5E8Q/видео.html
    Erlkönig (Goethe 1749 - 1832 )
    Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
    Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
    Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
    Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.
    "Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?" -
    "Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
    Den Erlenkönig mit Kron' und Schweif?" -
    "Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif."
    "Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
    Gar schöne Spiele spiel' ich mit dir;
    Manch' bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
    Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand." -
    "Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
    Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?" -
    "Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
    In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind." -
    "Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
    Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
    Meine Töchter führen den nächtlichen Reihn,
    Und wiegen und tanzen und singen dich ein." -
    "Mein Vater, mein Vater, und siehst du nicht dort
    Erlkönigs Töchter am düstern Ort?" -
    "Mein Sohn, mein Sohn, ich seh' es genau:
    Es scheinen die alten Weiden so grau. -"
    "Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
    Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch' ich Gewalt." -
    "Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt faßt er mich an!
    Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan!" -
    Dem Vater grauset's; er reitet geschwind,
    Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
    Erreicht den Hof mit Mühe und Not;
    In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
    LITERAL TRANSLATION
    Who rides, so late, through night and wind?
    It is the father with his child.
    He has the boy well in his arm
    He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.
    "My son, why do you hide your face in fear?"
    "Father, do you not see the Elf-king?
    The Elf-king with crown and cape?"
    "My son, it's a streak of fog."
    "You dear child, come, go with me!
    (Very) beautiful games I play with you;
    Many colorful flowers are on the beach,
    My mother has many a golden robe."
    "My father, my father, and do you not hear
    What the Elf-king quietly promises me?"
    "Be calm, stay calm, my child;
    Through dry leaves the wind is sighing."
    "Do you, fine boy, want to go with me?
    My daughters shall wait on you finely;
    My daughters lead the nightly dance,
    And rock and dance and sing to bring you in."
    "My father, my father, and don't you see there
    The Elf-king's daughters in the gloomy place?"
    "My son, my son, I see it clearly:
    There shimmer the old willows so grey."
    "I love you, your beautiful form entices me;
    And if you're not willing, then I will use force."
    "My father, my father, he's touching me now!
    The Elf-king has done me harm!"
    It horrifies the father; he swiftly rides on,
    He holds the moaning child in his arms,
    Reaches the farm with great difficulty;
    In his arms, the child was dead..

Coen Janssen the keyboardist is credited for the instrumental part of this song, and Simone for the lyrics. It's beautiful and for me an anthem of life. I love that it's not just a song about losing a loved one but also about accepting that pain and wanting to move on, wanting to be guided through it, she's aware that things happen for a reason and hopes to live with that for the rest of her life. Autumn and winter will always be there, the important thing to remember is that spring will come again someday.
