i just watched this for the 50th time and i still find myself cheering out loud like an idiot when Andy Irons pulled that backdoor 10 out from under Kelly Slaters 8.73....EPIC
This battles took the sport to a whole new level. All the new kidz making millions of dollars....kinda ode it to Andy and Kelly. RIP Andy Irons you Legend.
I had Andy's winning wave from that contest in photo sequence as my desktop background until my other computer crashed. It was great to see it every morning and watch that burrrrrrrrrn ;-)
I was there that final day. I neva realized until watching this video that, the points given by the judges are mad low. Corey got spooked on how gnar Andy was haha. Bless Up Andy, Legends neva die.
@@jiplinnartz5820 JJF is the best in the world and a wave riding savant. But AI was literally bipolar, at times his approach was so explosive and unpredictable it's unrivaled to me. that's the subjective beauty of surfing, to each their own.

Irons was an incredible talent and personality. I think what he was doing even then on relatively basic equipment is still contemporary. And he was absolutely fearless to boot. Just lastly, please, make good choices when they might be difficult ones to make in the heat of the moment. RIP.

Energy was ecstatic you could feel it circulating in the air throughout the crowd and surfers. Surfings golden era wish I could get back into it but it’s became so much more than just surfing and wanting to win.
Who knows... perhaps by the time his career was over he could have had 5,6,7 world titles. Apart from say Tom Curren, A.I. would be the only guy since M.R. to have the drive and ability to win more than 3 titles. Surfers now win 2 or 3. Four is supremely difficult. John Florence has the long-term focus. Be interesting seeing where it goes from here...
