    When filing the natural nails, I’ve heard some conflicting information from RUclipsrs that aren’t professionals. Do you need to file in a single direction or file toward the middle of the nail to prevent fraying? Also, what are the opinions on ceramic and glass files for natural nails?

    • @gretchen585ify
      @gretchen585ify 2 года назад

      One direction

    • @violetviolet888
      @violetviolet888 Год назад

      Aslynn Wetzel: not all glass files are equal. Use etched crystal like Germanikure. They are a game changer. Most are sprayed with sand and extremely poor quality. Germanikure will last you for life if you don't drop them.

    I do agree to use a new file for each service but why are clients so reluctant to pay the right value of a service? I tend to see that people do want gorgeous nails but they're not willing to pay the right price.. and files are not that cheap in the end..

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 лет назад +24

      Throwing away a nail file maybe costs $0.85/service so it shouldn't drastically effect your overall service price. I will be doing some pricing videos soon. :)

    • @shirleybridge7027
      @shirleybridge7027 5 лет назад +1

      Your so right about reluctant clients . But once your clients dont question your pricing I find. Those are the clients that appreciate a good quality set of nails. Those gaggles are always looking for a bargain. Education in this field is not cheap nor is the passion we instill in our work . Stay positive. Our work speaks for our education and quality of service we give.
      ...Remember theres always room for improvement in nails hust as Liz shows us in everyone of her videos. Love her to peace.

      My regular, and favorite manicurust of all time, (I moved to another state and had to stop going to her😔) had each client purchase a kit that was kept at the salon, with our names on the case, and in a locker. I Loved knowing that my nippers, files, etc hadn't been used on other clients, and were safe. She even disinfected them, and returned them to our cases, while we were still in the salon drying our nails. We just paid for replacements as needed. I think that all salons should implement this way of handling tools, if their clientele is that which would support the initial investment. Try that.

      @@shirleybridge7027 Agreed. Getting services done that include sharp objects that can injure you, or other tools that may pass disease, are Definitely not the place to be cheap and/or skimp on safety. THAT I'll pay for!

    I'm gonna leave this here so maybe it'll help with understanding grits
    Think you have the same surface and on one you have to lay 100 rocks one next to the other and then you have to lay 180 rocks one next to the other
    So thinking about it will there be smaller rocks in the first or the second situation? Of course on the second so that means the grit will be finer
    And in the situation with 100 rocks (the 100 grit) it will be coarser/grittier

  • @shineonshy
    @shineonshy 5 лет назад +10

    WOW, I am so grateful to you for sharing this important information! I am a nail technology student and I needed help with learning about the grit number & textures, and which sides should be used on natural or enhanced nails. Also, how to PROPERLY hold the file. You shared far more than what I understood, omg, it is SOOO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH. I even appreciate the advice you gave about including the files into the cost of a service as a result of excellent qualities nails. When I gain customers I want them to feel valued and very well taken care of and healthy. I feel sooo much more confident now to use hand files. I cannot thank you enough, this blew my mind. God bless you. You've gained a new subbie!

  • @laveenaguptalive9062
    @laveenaguptalive9062 4 года назад +1

    1. Grit : texture on filer or buffer
    2. Disinctible :
    3. Emery board
    Files :
    Thinner called emery board. Made of wood. One time use. Used to reach tight areas as they are thin.
    Spongy foarmy material. More flexible. Netween buffer and emery board.
    Moon file: same as spongy one.
    Better to do curve surfaces around cuticle areas.
    Diamond files : same amery board but thicker.
    Buffer :
    Block buffer and etc.
    180 is standard grit number.

    Well, no wonder I've been cutting my side wall when filing my nails! I now know for my next new file. I also wondered why I was getting those notches on my natural nails, so now I know. This was a really helpful video! Files are more complicated than I ever imagined. You didn't cover what a Zebra file is though, and I see that mentioned a lot on nail supply websites.
    Just as a little FYI, the moon shape is widely called the harbour bridge shape in Australia (they have the same shape as Sydeny Harbour Bridge). I buy all my files from Aussie shops so I honestly didn't know it was called the moon shape.

    I discovered your channel through your collaboration with Nail Career Education, and first I would like to thank you so much for all the information you put on your youtube channel. I'm by no means a professionnal and am caring / polishing only my own nails, but I'm very interested on how all this works, how products or nail files affect our nails etc
    On the subject of the video, and with your opinion on throwing away nail files after each service, I would like to ask your opinion on Crystal / Glass nail files, but maybe more for a personnal use (I know Nail Career Education gave her opinion saying she doesn't often use them, except in some very specific scenarios) ? Do you like them or not ? Do you think they are a good recommendation for personnal use or not ?
    Thank you for the time you put into your videos !

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  3 года назад

      The lower the number the more grit. I recommend you don't go lower than 180 (in number) on natural nails. 180-240 is ideal. Anything grittier should be used on product only.

    For doing your own nails, do you have any thoughts on metal or glass nail files? My nails tend to be on the weaker side & I've seen many people who use regular polish talk about how gentle they are but I want to know if they could be harmful? I've noticed that none of them seem to have any changes on whether my nails split or the amount of hangnails I get, but maybe I'm also just filing wrong?

      Evee Owens - in California you have to use a new file for each client, it’s one of the rules/laws I’m sure each state has its own directions. I use the Light Elegance files and they say disinfectable but I don’t. I tried once and it didn’t work properly afterwards. I’ve noticed that files just aren’t made to use over and over any more as well.

      NailFix&Chill when someone is getting a simple manicure and the file is barely used there is no difference in the first or second use. Usually after 2-3 uses depending on how much filing was done you do need a new file. Now for nail enhancements such as acrylics or hard gels yes there is a difference. But i do not hand file the shape i use my e-file i barely use files as is

      there are files with sanitizable bases and replaceable abrasives! Hard to find though. I've seen stainless steel bases/handles. Theres different abrasive levels and thickness, so you can stick on the thinnest one to get close to the sidewalls or a spongey thicker one to not hurt a client. some even sell buffers that stick on. I think they might cut down on waste over the long run

I never have to soak them off because they just pop off after a few days, sometimes less. I have watched so many videos that I think have maybe given bad info, and I love you're explaining why you should and shouldn't do certain things. I have also been using Sally products, and I'm thinking maybe it's not the best option for my nails. Interestingly enough, their prep is blue, also. It says it's just alcohol and blue coloring. Why would they do that? So I'm going to try some of your products you recommended.

      Yes I toss everything after each client. Try and refine your process as even perfectionists can run out of money if their expenses outweigh their revenue. You really should only need one hand file and maybe one buffer per client.

    Great video 💜. When I started practicing enhancements on my self last year I was guilty of unknowingly making notches in some of my nails. It was from a previous video of yours last year that I realized what I was doing! Now I'm practicing on family while going to school. I'm going to start turning the hand and doing the filing routine you went over. My questions are. Can you go over what grits to use on hard gel and acrylic. I like using 100/180 grit moon files on my hard gel. Is this too harsh? And what progression of grit files should you do. If you do a 180 file what grit buffer should you use? And where do you recommend to buy files. I know a lot of ppl say EBay or Amazon. But I question the quality. Thank you once again Your the bomb!

    • @liveandletlive7152
      @liveandletlive7152 6 лет назад +2

      Sarah C maybe I can help with a few stuff dear.For gels she said no less than 150 grit . 100 would be too harsh for gel.
      Actually think about it...if you are using the files only once then even if you find something on EBay that doesn't cost as much as the big brands but looks quite good then it's a good thing.Sometimes big companies just add their logo on the file and that's what you're paying for. I have used big brands and also files and buffers from Aliexpress and to be honest if you look at reviews first or you know how to spot quality you can't go wrong.You can find quality.I paid like 3.50 USD on Alliexpress for a pack of 10 180grit moon files.Give it a try:)

      Hi Sarah 180 is perfect for gel and acrylic and I never buff afterwards because I need a gritty surface for my color or top coat to adhere to. Sounds like you're doing a great job with everything. There are lots of places to buy files. I personally like the Kokoist, Akzentz, and Light Elegance ones but you can also get them from beauty supplies. Ebay and Amazon are good too but they are usually more expensive than if you bought them in bulk from a reputable reseller.

    I was watching this again, and realized I am still curious about zebra files. How are they different from the others?

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 лет назад +7

      Zebra just has a different color and they are supposed to be "longer lasting" but they are the same as white, black, etc. You'll find similar grits and shapes. Zebra abrasive nail files are made with black silicone grit also and then coated with white zinc sterate powder. This substance acts as a lubricant to reduce heat from friction, keeps the filing dust from clogging in the grits and extends the life of the nail file. But in my personal experience the difference is almost unnoticeable.

    I’ve been using a fileboard with disposable file grits, they now even have disposable buffers for the boards. Plus because they are stainless steel they are so easy to disinfect and the boards themselves are very inexpensive and the “files” come in packs of 50-100. They do also come in different shapes moon, pill, boomerang, and rectangle.

    hello! I am a new at home nail hobbiest who is trying to self taeach from your videos and others (like NCE) while I figure out if this is something I can physically do professionally or not (I have physical disabilities).
    But my question is for myself, at home, how many uses should I get out of a nail file before I should toss? I’m just using it on myself only, I make sure to give my daughter her own so we're not sharing by accident

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  10 месяцев назад

      At home you can basically use a nail file as long as it has grit to file with. Once it loses grit (or if it gets dirty and gross) then toss it.

    How do you feel about using an overhand grip? .. I see Greg from young nails preach it .. where do you stand on this technique ?

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 лет назад

      To each their own. Overhand for me and many techs is awkward and you can't rock the file as well. But everyone has a personal preference.

  • @Danellr007
    @Danellr007 6 лет назад +1

    I was hoping you would touch on the type of file that is stainless with the replaceable grit stickers. And also metal diamond files.

    • @TheNailHub
      @TheNailHub  6 лет назад +1

      Not a fan of the replaceable sticker files. They have very sharp edges that are hard to remove and they are awkward due to the plastic or metal core they are made of. They could be used for pedis or natural nail care but for enhancements I do not like them. Same goes for metal. Good for natural nails or pedis, but for filing on gel or acrylic they don't have enough flexibility and the grit is too flat.

    Quick question, I’m a Newbie Mobile Nail Tech and I put my clients files into a labeled ziplock bag only used on them! So why did you say never store used files! I’m just curious? Thanks and I love your videos btw

    • @DendeDog
      @DendeDog 6 лет назад +4

      I believe it's the ziplock bag that's the issue rather than the act of storing them. If you use a ziplock bag, you're trapping airflow and allowing/encouraging any pathogens that may be on the file to grow which can then cause bacteria/fungal infections if those files are used again later. If you're using and storing individual client files, I'd suggest paper envelopes that still allow airflow but keep the files seperate (that's what I do :) )

      Pamela Jacobs - I hope she answers you and I want to give my 2 cents from my experience. I’m in California where they made the rule/law (I think it’s a law covered in the Business and Professions or Health and Safety codes) that says you can only use one file per customer. The salon owner where I am keeps a bag for each client for manicures and pedicures (she stores files, buffers and toe separators) and she told me the law here is ambiguous for it and the board rep that comes and inspects isn’t sure if it’s allowed or not herself but she doesn’t write them up for it. I’m a newbie and I’m afraid enough that I don’t do it.

    • @liveandletlive7152
      @liveandletlive7152 6 лет назад

      Pamela Jacobs she said that the files lose some of their effectiveness after a service so re using may cause you to waste more time filing. Also an over used file will cause you to add more pressure when filing which causes heat and discomfort.
      In my country to my alarm there is no rule whatsoever or people don't Check. I found mostly all the places i went to use unsanitised and unsterilized tools to my alarm...how did I know that?
      Well the files were so dirty,old and were not performing well and when they were done with my nails they dumped the tools in a big box along with all their other tools and called it a wrap.Needless to say I now do my own nails even though I would have prefered being pampered.I figured it's pamper and get a fungus or not at all.
      I have some tips if you care to have them.Maybe just ask your client.If she says re use a couple more times or depending how heavily used it is minus the cost of the tools off her next treatment. If not make sure she's paying for the tools each service.At the end of the day you're happy and your client is too.

    What’s your pricing Liz? Here in Florida I only go to a nail tech that works from home and she usually charges me the same 50$ she does acrylic so I didn’t even know there was such a thing as hard gel. For me gel was just those opi polishes that sally sells. So I wanted to know how much it is or should be for a full gel service with extension and how much you would charge for fill in and design change?

    Brand new nail file for every client.. this is the way supposed to be in every nail salon.. not everyone practice it. Especially when they are busy.. they take their own little basket of nail tools and jump to the next client.. I see this all the time.. Good health practice teaching ..
