That was just lovely to watch :) I had the pleasure of spending several hours riding one when I had my previous bike in for a service at the BMW dealer. I loved everything about it, from its gorgeous looks to the way it rocked side-to-side when I revved it at a standstill. I hope yours brings you thousands more happy miles!
Thanks for the vid. It’s nice to hear an opinion of someone that actually owns the bike. I just pulled the trigger on a ‘22 model and take delivery in a few weeks. I’m beyond excited:) thanks again
I’d never heard of this bike until I visited my local bike showroom. There she stood with a gloss grey primer tank & tan seat. Flat Twin gorgeousness. My jaw dropped & I was mumbling all sorts to myself. My next bike for sure.
Very nice review of the bike from an owner's perspective, no rattling on with specs, dimensions, weights, etc. That info is on BMW's website and I'd rather hear an owner's long term experience and seat of the pants "feelz", as the young people say. It's obvious this bike brings you a lot of joy and isn't that what motorcycles do best?
Nice drive through the country side. A drive to put a smile on my face, on the perfect bike to so effortlessly display the pleasure of riding a motorcycle. Thanks for the review. I've owned a number of BMW over 50 years of riding. Currently on a Triumph ST, kinda starting the search for a switch up. The R Nine T is definitely on the short list.
Hey young fella, enjoyed your insight to the r9t. As always Scotland.....top roads, top place and top people. Will continue to search out your vlogs in future, thank you!
Absolutely ferkin brilliant vlog Neil, so enjoyable to watch and listen too. the roads around Elgin are superb if a long, long way away from me here in the channel Islands. Stay safe :)
A most delightful time shared with you this morning.Lovely country side , much like central New York believe it or not.Great review indeed.Cheers mate :>)
Hi Neil, great review! I currently ride a Triumph Street Triple R and I’m thinking of changing to a 2016 R nine T, I love the look of the bike and they sound excellent. I’ve ridden many twins mainly parallel or V twins & I do love the mid range grunt you get from a twin plus the engine braking is so much stronger. I found the review very helpful although the singing type noises were a little off putting 😂. Thanks again for a a great review!
I love my R9T so much, there is really nothing to complain about its just an all around great machine. Looks amazing , sounds amazing , rides amazing. BMW nailed it with the Nine T, kind of like they always do. One of the best bikes I have ever owned for sure.
I too have taken about 10 years off the bike and looking to get back on in 2022. I've been looking at bikes for over a year now. I keep going back and forth to what I should get.... Then, when I was walking down the street in Brooklyn NY..... I heard an engine I hadn't heard in a while. It was someone on an R Nine T! In New York City, contrary to popular belief, you see lots of modded Dual-Sports. Especially in Manhattan. It sort of makes sense. Cheaper. Easier to navigate through traffic. Then when you leave Manhattan and get into Brooklyn, you see many more Triumphs and custom, older bikes. But the R Nine T I've only seen maybe 5 times in 5 years. Since space is at a premium, most people leave their bikes outside. And you don't want to leave something like that out in NYC elements (and I'm not talking about the weather specifically). So if you have an R Nine T, you have to have money to secure it and be very serious about bikes. I wanted the K1200R but they didn't sell well they stopped production. But I saw the R Nine T the first year and almost pulled the trigger. They've just gotten better and better with the different model options. I'm thinking of the "Pure" model with the 719 options including spoked wheels. I just don't need all the extras of the regular model. I'm glad you are still enjoying your bike and have had zero problems with it. That's good to hear. Let's see what happens in 2022 for me! Keep up the good work!
I have a 2007 BMW R1200R (17K miles) and I feel as you do. I also love my bike. The seat was changed from the cruel factory one to a Corbin. This was a great video, Thanks.
Hi there, I’m also in north east of Scotland with similar great roads on my doorstep (near Brechin). Currently own a Speedtriple 1050RS and am currently wanting to change and the R nine T range is at the top of my wish list, thanks for review mate
Neil - great vid and it resonated with what I've experienced over the last 2 days of ownership. I really like your style and the way you come across as a presenter. I think YT may be holding you back because of a bit of swearing. I'd like to hear and see more of you reviewing yours and other bikes on that great road because I think it would really be great for people after an honest review. Thank you for your time to upload. Dave.
Thank you sir, for making a review and sharing your personal opinion as a owner after months of riding the r9t. I am looking forward to own one. Very likely.
What a treat, your review and the ride. Loved the mention of "Long way around/down " which inspired me as well , but I see myself as a weekend warrior on roads like this in coastal California. Never considered a scrambler before, but I may have found my bike finally. Cheers.
Thank you! My bike isn’t the scrambler, it’s just the regular r nine t. The scramblers are gorgeous too though. Whatever you pick, should you pick one, I hope you’ll love it as much as I do.
Thank you very much. The bike is really lovely and I do feel fortunate to live where I do. Less fortunate when riding to work in the pissing rain and cold, though. 😁
Nice review and beautiful riding, thanks! The R nineT is what I would call my dream bike. That air/oil cooled boxer engine is full of character. First need to sell my MT09. Hopefully next year :).
The MT09 seems a really nice bike too and I was looking at them a few years ago. I’m still totally in love with this bike though after 3 years and nearly 13000 miles.
@@MrNeilfatmonkey You're absolutely right. The MT09 is indeed a nice bike. The only problem with it is that, it always wants you to go faster :D. More often than not, I just wanna go out and ride for the sake of pleasure. Despite the smoothness of the triple engine, it's essentially a sports bike. Since I can only have one bike, the I want something that's great for cruising and gunning it in the twisties. And the retro touch of the R nineT rounds it all up. For me, the most beautiful bike in the market really. I see you're a guitarist. I'm a musician, too - but not professionally. I Play a couple of instruments, guitars being one of them - although not I'm best at :D. Last times I was on stage was behind the drums and later the bassman.
@@r.heinrich3364 there must be something about music and bikes. I know a few biker musicians. 😄 The R Nine T certainly has the looks and the shaft drive and engine give it character. The exhaust note through the standard Akrapovic on my roadster is sublime and I’ve not even taken out the baffles. It really is a great bike for cruising with little bursts of speed.
Good, intelligent review. And lovely roads. I had one as a loan bike when my GS was being serviced, and really enjoyed the engine characteristics; it felt and sounded more 'authentic' than the GS. I can't see my wife wanting to perch on the back on her annual ride though.
Great review, Neil. I live in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia where all our roads are like "A or B" UK type class road. The RNineT is the perfect bike for eating up the miles on back roads for lunch or coffee runs, typically 200 km round trips.
Sometimes hard to start after short runs on very hot days and your feet tend to get hot in the airflow if you don't wear proper boots. Minor problems, 99% of the time mine runs like clockwork.@@MrNeilfatmonkey
Barney Manningtree great to hear. I’ve been asked that question myself but Scotland is cold most of the time so I couldn’t answer. 😀 I’m glad it doesn’t give you any great problems.
I traded my 2017 R1200RT for a 2020 R9T scrambler two weeks ago as I lost my touring buddy to the big c and haven’t toured since. I couldn’t be happier and agree with all your comments, and I find it perfect riding around our beautiful Adelaide hills and surrounds. The attention it draws for it’s looks and sound is something I’m not used to with the RT. The dynamic performance definitely matches the looks. This one is a keeper, cheers👍🇦🇺
Peter Y I’m so sorry to hear about your friend. That’s a bit shit. I’m really glad you’re enjoying your scrambler. I’d love to have a go on one to see how different it is to mine.
Really good vid, and what a great place to ride. The bike is an absolute stunner, it’s a model I’ve only recently become aware of really and, looks wise, I think they’re just about perfection. I need to get a test ride on one, just hoping at 6’2” it’s not a bit small. 🤞
There’s a Facebook group called BMW R NINE T UK & IRELAND which is definitely worth a follow. There’ll be loads of taller riders who you can ask how they get on with it. 😀
Hi Niel, I have had my R9T for only two months and I feel exactly what you feel with yours, I live in Colombia (not Columbia) and here the roads are full of curves and you go from 5oo meters above sea level to 3000 in a couple of hours, that makes me enjoy my motorcycle as much as you do, Greetings from Colombia!
Jorge les I’ve never been to Colombia but hope to one day. It sound like you have some wonderful roads there. I’m glad you love your bike and have great fun on it.
Looking at the Triumph speed twin or this R9T and I must say the bike your on has caught my attention and I would like to say thank you for an honest review, I’ve looked at loads of videos in the last few days on both bikes And find your review the best I’ve seen yet there’s lots of people going on test rides from dealers which is good approach but as I know you can’t own them all 😕they give it back after a week or two and can’t really give an honest opinion of what it’s like to live with and until I can test ride them both I’m not making any choice, the Trident looks good up front but I think the back end let’s it down a little. The Speed twin was going to be the next go to and then I seen the R9T for the first time and fell in love with the design and after a little Personalisation I feel I can really make it mine, it looks fantastic and I can’t wait to go ride one, i’m currently recovering from a hernia operation and will be off work for the next five weeks but can’t wait to get to the shops when they open 😎 I’m on the large side also 6,1 & 108 kg and thought that the Trident would be a little small for me so listening to say that you find your bike comfortable and you’re a big chat then it’s probably what I go for, thank you again for the review more videos of the bike please 👍 I also have a 2015 Triumph Tiger kitted out with side boxes heated seats and grips me and my partner like to go out on the bikes so it would be nice to have one just for me 😊
Thanks for your kind words. I’ve heard people say this isn’t the best bike for tall people. I’m 5’11” and find this very comfortable but maybe your extra height might just make it uncomfortable for you. Definitely worth a test ride to see. I’ve got a silver speed hump on mine now and it looks great. I hope you get better soon and have a speedy recovery from your operation.
Handy channel I might be moving not to far from you, just south of Nairn. You're teaching me the roads already, and the r nine t is on my list of possible future bikes, belter lol
I've got a much older model - 03 R1150R Rockster - but I would say almost everything about it you said. I'd also add that the maintenance is easy & that it's very reliable. I don't have ABS & I wouldn't hate that but it wasn't very reliable in my bike's gen anyway. I'd also be interested in rev-matching as my local roads have lots more moving through the gears which is slightly more limited on the R's lower reving engine than say a 4 banger from anyone else. That said it sounds & feels so great I don't resent having to shift a bit more often :) Stay safe!
@@MrNeilfatmonkey just been looking online which one (model) is it especially the version of the tank is that like a optional extra? What additional options are work looking for
Stanley Lawson I think they only made those ones with the weld down the tank in limited numbers for a short period of time. I’ve just got the standard R Nine T, not the Pure, Scrambler or Urban GS. I’d totally recommend a tail tidy, some engine guards or covers and some bar end mirrors. I’ve got these ones here: Tail tidy: piercitycustom.com/products/evotech-performance-bmw-r9t-tail-tidy?_pos=1&_sid=029d04399&_ss=r Mirrors: piercitycustom.com/products/oberon-performance-bmw-r9t-adjustable-bar-end-mirror-round?_pos=2&_sid=3f81c8324&_ss=r Engine covers: www.sportouring.co.uk/shop/accessories/fender-extenders-and-huggers/machineart/machine-art-x-heads-for-dohc-models-pair-r1200gsadvrrt-r-nine-t/
@@MrNeilfatmonkey Looking online seems only a couple in the sports version with the weave weld around would prefer the one like yours so I have the option to take a passenger Speaking with a couple of dealers to see what they can find I also saw a fab one in pure Blue which is another colour I love and it looked fantastic so maybe as a special order I could get? What beautiful place you live in a place I shall certainly visit Many thanks f
@@MrNeilfatmonkey Agree. It has put the R9T on my short list as a replacement of, or perhaps new addition to (trade-in almost makes it worth hanging on to it) my '17 s1000r. BTW, love where you live (my Wife is Scottish, and and half of my Scots heritage derives from Golspie). Next trip for my wife to travel back home will have some solo moto trips, while she catches up with cousins etc.
enjoyed that review vid and your A95 recommendation. thank you. what do you think it would be like to tour in europe - with luggage but without a pillion?
I never toured on mine, but I did ride across to the Hebrides with throw overs. I personally don’t think you’ll have any problems. You don’t have to have a touring bike to tour.
I too had an Explorer, loved that bike, but like you didn't find it that comfortable on long ride. Now considering and researching R9T, Ducati 1100 scrambler or 1200 speed twin Triumph, hope to test ride all three this summer
All really great bikes, from what I’ve read/watched. I mainly went for the R Nine T because of the shaft drive (I hate chains!) I’d be interested to hear what you think of them when you get your test rides.
Nice watch, be it a you filmed it a while ago! Those roads look great for bikers! I’m considering parting company with a sportsbike for one of these. Time to slow it down a bit! I’ve had a soft spot for R9 T’s since they were launched. I did have a demo on one a few years ago. I’m not sure if it’s me or shaft drive bikes but do you always rev match blipping the throttle when changing down? Quite a few times I felt it would step out and not necessarily hard on the gas either. It put me off but I need to get back on one and give it another go.
@@GJS-live I don’t. Unfortunately I have some knee issues which made the seating and peg position unbearable for me. I had to replace it with a feet forward cruiser style bike so I didn’t have to give up riding entirely, but I really miss that bike. Good luck with your search.
What a pleasant review 👍🏻 I ride a 1100 XX Blackbird and I know I would miss the phenomenal power - but bikes like this (or the Triumph Thruxton RS) appeal to me on another level in regards to looks and convenience, and I would love to get one!
I've got the GS Urban. Love the flexibility of the motor. Great in town, out in the country, or on a highway. Handling inspires confidence. Sounds great with the stock pipe. Needs a screen and engine bars from stock would be good since they're an essential purchase. Thanks for the video.
B M I’ve got X Heads on the engine so there is protection there. I absolutely love the look of naked bikes and I don’t ride super fast so the screen for me isn’t a necessity. I’m glad you enjoyed the video and I hope your bike continues to give you so much joy.
Great bike takes me back used to travel daily from Inverness to work at Elgin weekly newspaper in1978 on a Honda cg125 had a gs now looking again g york
Thrillho726 not all of them, that’s why I like this one so much. Riding down the street my house is on is like getting rogered up the arse by a bull. Not that I’d know what that’s like... 😀
Great video Neil cheers! I'm familiar with these roads, based in Aberdeen. Just got a Moot Guzzi V7 this week. They say it's a poor man's R nine T, but after shelling out for a GS in November, I am indeed a poor man, but the V7 (2015) was a bargain, looks mint, and has shaft drive too! Too old for chain maintenance as a daily rider in the weather we get in NE Scotland. Cheers.
I love the V7! A great looking bike. Shaft drive was definitely one of my main considerations when getting the R Nine T but the V7 was a close contender. I hope the weather gets nice for some long rides soon.
Hey Neil Thanks for the video. It was very interesting. Watching it I realised I got the same tail tidy and mirrors as you! I also bought my R9T Scrambler from Manchester! And I'm 118 kgs, which is quite a bit on the heavy side. I think the similarities end there. In addition I fitted the Evotech sliders all round too plus the SW Motech Engine Sump guard and Unit Garage oil cooler guard. Main reason for the sum guard is really so that I can use a bike lift without damaging any of the undercarriage and the pipes. I bought the bike in between lockdowns and being a fair weather rider, I've only done 40 miles on the bike since last October. So, I wanted to ask you a question I haven't done much mileage and Since you've done almost 5000 miles when you did the video, I wanted to ask, do you genuinely believe you don't need to upgrade or adjust the suspension considering our weight?
I’ve done about 7000 miles on the bike now and I have to admit that I’ve been looking at rear shocks recently. I’ve read so many people saying that it makes a massive improvement that I am considering replacing it. However, I honestly haven’t noticed that the rear shock is bad at all; I still find the bike very comfortable to ride on Scottish roads and still find the setup to be perfectly adequate for my weight (I’m more like 130 kilos after all these lockdowns). Yes, I do notice it’s harsh over potholes, but I kind of assume every bike would be. I’ve only ridden about 10 bikes in my life, I’m not a bike tester or someone who has access to a lot of bikes so my frame of reference is narrow, however I still genuinely feel the stock setup is more than capable of doing the job. I think your front suspension setup is different to mine on your Scrambler so your experience may be different. I hope you enjoy riding yours as much as I do mine.
Do you still own the NineT. I ride a Yamaha super tenere and an interceptor. Want to get this as a replacement for the interceptor. I was surprised to hear you say that this is really comfortable. I'm 6,'1 and 108 kgs. The only thing that's casting a doubt in my mind is comfort on day long rides. Is this good for that application as stock or would you recommend putting some more comfortable seats and a handlebar riser to start with ? Any more tips? I just love the fit and finish if the bike and the character of that boxer just won me over in my 30 min of test ride. Might go for the option 719 with the aluminum tank 😊😊
I do still own it and I do find it very comfortable, but I’m 5’11” so a little shorter. Your knees may feel it a bit more than mine and you might need higher bars, but it works well for me. I’ve just passed 14000 miles on mine and still love it. I have to admit my arse gets sore after a couple of hours on the standard seat so I got a Wunderlich active comfort seat which works well, but I genuinely think sitting down for hours at a time on any bike will get uncomfortable, short of maybe a Goldwing. 😀
Cheers! Thanks for the video. I bought a Scrambler, new. I’m doing the breaking period, it has About a week and 300 miles on the odometer. I can sense a smell of hot oil, maybe burned oil. Is this normal because the engine and everything is new? The engine temperature is fine and the engine oil level is at the mark, and the bike handles brilliant and sounds even better, but that smell, more frequently noted on low speed and low gears is kinda strange. Did you get that or is just me? Thank you ✌️✌️
I bought mine second hand with about 500 miles on the clock and didn’t notice this myself. Perhaps it is normal. There are quite a few user groups on Facebook; it’d be worth asking there. 👍🏻
Nice review! I'm have also the pleasure of owning the same R9T, with the black tank and some other additional bits. I completely agree, it's a great motorcycle, it's fast, it's agile and it looks and sounds (I've got a aftermarket Acropovic) absolutely great! Would recommend that bike to anyone! Greetings from New Zealand!
Tomasz Józefowski you have good taste, Sir! My wife and I got married in New Zealand and we spent 3 weeks driving a camper around. I promise I wasn’t one of the annoying ones. I pulled over any time there was a car behind me, and secretly it gave me an excuse to stop and have another bar of Whittaker’s.
Tomasz Józefowski that’s because your government got it right and acted swiftly. Not like the shit show we have in the UK. Stay safe and enjoy those roads! Are you South or North island?
@@MrNeilfatmonkey it was hard at the beginning but it's better now and hopefully we will recover fast. I'm located in Wellington so South of North Island :)
@@TomJozNZ we didn't get the chance to sample Wellington, aside from the ferry port, because we were on a bit of a schedule to get down to Queenstown for the wedding, but when we come back we shall definitely stay over. How's the weather on North Island for biking in the winter?
Lovely review Neil. I have a 2017 model with an aluminium tank and love it to bit's. It's my daily commuter up to London so it get's used in all weathers and always looks dirty but hey ho what can you do. Stay safe 👍👍
You too! Glad you love yours as much as I do. I’ve just had to put mine through its first MoT test and no probs. I’ve just put on some Unit Garage panniers too and they look great. That said, mine’s currently not getting used due to snow, cold temperatures and the dark.
I like these more when they are dirty. Its like seeing a dirty jeep or a dirty scrambler. Makes my heart skip a beat knowing its been on some adventure.
Himanth Prathap I haven’t really noticed. The screen on my Triumph was a slightly higher one than normal but it doesn’t seem to have made a massive difference to me going to a naked bike again.
Agreed. I want to know how a bike is long term. I could care less about test rides bc im never buying a new bike and want to know what living with it is like.
Good review. Helped a lot. I am also torn between a GS (850) and this. I really like the looks of this retro but my only concern is occasional long trips. Would you do a 400-500 miles a day trip in this or would you still recommend a tourer/adv like GS?
It depends on so many things I think it’d be impossible for me to say. I’ve never ridden a GS so can’t make a direct comparison, but so many people love those bikes for touring that it’s probably a good indicator that they’re perfect for long distance stuff. That said, I wouldn’t hesitate to do those distances on my R nine T and if they’re only occasional long trips even better. I know this probably isn’t much help but I can’t really offer anything more.
Hi Neil, great video, and lovely bike! Do you think an R Nine T would be ok as a first bike? I've been driving for 25 years, but new to biking. Passed my direct access a few months ago and was considering a Street Twin, but would love one of these.
Hi Gav. Absolutely! Depending on your proportions it’s a great first bike. Power delivery is pretty linear and it’s quite forgiving, but if you’re smaller it might be a bit heavy.
Hello Neil, nice review, my question is specifically with suspension, I have a back that gives me trouble from time to time and I currently ride two Harleys, roadglide and street bob and I have upgraded suspension and seats on both, road glide is now good but street bob still hurst back on longer rougher roads, I also have a honda rally 300 which is great and never bugs my back even off road. Back to question how soft or hard is suspension, unfortunately I would sacrifice control in corners for a softer plush ride where the small bumps say 2" or so are taken out of the mix. Any feed back much appreciated as I am about to pull the trigger on one.
That’s a really tough one to answer as I’ve never had back issues. I certainly didn’t find the suspension to be harsh, but a lot of people complain about it. As I said in the video, my frame of reference is limited as I’ve only had about 3 other bikes over the years and I’d hate to give you bad advice. All I can say is that it never gave me a bad back but there were certain roads that could be quite jarring. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Great vid, thanks. I just picked up a 2019 pure. Also not a fan of the giant back end for the plate and lights but love everything else. Which tail tidy did you go with? I have seen a really cool LED bar that eliminates the plate mount but also read it can cause issues with the electrical... Cheers from the west coast of Canada!
Jeff Baldry I love the look of the LED bar, but in the UK they are illegal to use as the indicators/turn signals, so to remain legal I’d have to have the regular indicators still fitted, which to me seemed pointless. If it’s legal in Canada I’d go with one of those. I’ve also heard that some of them might cause warning lights to come on, but there are videos from Fancy Bike Thing in the UK showing theirs doesn’t cause issues. I went with an Evotech tail tidy available here: piercitycustom.com/products/evotech-performance-bmw-r9t-tail-tidy In fact, there’s a picture of my bike with it fitted on that page. I’m not affiliated with them in any way.
Nell I've had my r9t since January 2016 a d have 48000 kilometers on it as I work at sea for 8 months of the year I try to get some touring in at the end of the fishing season and ride through north Queensland and newsouthwales and Victoria in the 4 to 6 weeks that I take off usually covering 10000 k plus my bike now has a windscreen and pennies bags I'm still in love with it by the way I'm 67 young
Test rode r nine t sport a couple of days ago at Alton BMW . My God what a beautiful bike ,handling was sublime ,great breaks front and back , lovely light clutch . The only fault for me was the Akropovic ,didn’t think it sounded particularly great . Other than than can’t fault it . 😀🇬🇧🏍❤️
Was it the single Akro with the carbon tip or the double stainless steel one? Mine has the double and I love the sound! It’s all subjective of course. I presume you tested the brand new version?
@@jakeyb6453 maybe try the one with the double barrelled single sided Akro if they still do them. It was actually the standard exhaust. I think it sounds gorgeous and I haven’t taken the baffles out of mine.
I don’t remember it being too bad. I used to get it serviced every year regardless, but I’d say it was new tyres every couple of years depending on your riding style and road surface, and an oil and filter change each year. I personally never had to top up with oil between services.
Thanks so much for the video. I’m swapping out my 9T Scramber (literally just run in) with a Sport so this video was extremely timely! Btw I’m from Elgin and thought the place looked familiar and got a surprise I saw Masonsieu Road! Must go up there sometime as it’s top bike country!
Neil Gregson thanks man, just waiting for the reg plates but hope to have it next week. I was going to ask what tail tidy you have and is it compatible with a seat hump? Mines got the single seat
Ewan Sinclair` the tail tidy is an Evotech and will work with a BMW hump, I can’t comment on after market ones. I got mine from here: piercitycustom.com/products/evotech-performance-bmw-r9t-tail-tidy In fact there’s a picture of it on my bike on that page. I’m not affiliated with them but have found their customer service to be amazing. Only thing with the tail tidy is you may have to do a bit of filing to your indicators to get them to fit. One of mine didn’t fit too well and I ended up cracking the base. It still fits and works, but is a little less secure now with the crack in it.
Hi Neil , seriously thinking of buying 2016/2017 models. My questions are with today’s fuel prices what average mpg are you getting and is not having a fuel gauge a problem. Thanks
Hi Ryan. I mostly do rural commuting, so my average speed according to the bike is probably only around 40mph, with some small town 20-30mph riding followed by long stretches of 60mph. I get around 48-50mpg but I’m a very heavy guy. I personally don’t have a problem with no fuel gauge, I just reset the trip computer after refilling and know the fuel light comes on at around 150 miles and I’ll get 180 miles from a tank.
Thanks Neil,.. my bug bear is the gear shift that is lose and fools me into thinking I am in neutral, have you had that? Hi Neil, whatts your experience about tires for the bike. I've got nearly the same bike as you got and my Metzelers z8's are worn out now after 7000 miles
Hi John. Yes I do and yes I do. There’s always something new to tempt me, but I still love riding this bike. 14000 miles on it now through all weather.
Brilliant video and cracked me up! I live down in Hampshire in the middle of the New Forest and want a bike to ride around locally, take on weekend trips, and strap a duffel to and go explore Europe for a couple of weeks with friends - what do you reckon to picking up one of these for all that? I have a test ride next week admittedly...
Josh Smith I think with a bit of careful planning of what gear to take it’d easily manage a tour round europe. When I toured on my Explorer I chucked way too much stuff in the panniers and ended up not using half of it, even though I’m a seasoned camper. Let me know how you get on with the test ride, I reckon you’ll love it.
Neil Gregson ah yeah! I was guilty of that doing a cycle tour around Scandinavia for 6 weeks in 2014. Definitely learned that lesson. I’ve also got a test ride of the Ducati scrambler 1200 and Honda CB650R coming up, I’m hoping the final decision won’t be too difficult...
Hi. Great testimonial :-) Sounds like pure joy! I am considering the R Nine T Pure... I also owned an Explorer that I got rid off for the exact reason as you did. My question is whether this bike would fit me though. I am 1.92m and weigh 95 kilos. Have heard stories that it isn’t great for taller riders. Any thoughts on this? Looking forward reading your reply.
Gidon Krot I’m only 180cm so I couldn’t really say if that extra height might make it too cramped. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful. I think the only way you’d know for sure is to take one out.
Yes Sure hello right back! Yep, the Scrambler has a bigger front wheel with different spokes on both, different forks and suspension and different brakes I think. It’s a very popular choice, though, and I’m sure you’ll love it.
I have owned 20 motorcycles so far. 3 have been BMW's. I bought an R100 new in 1988 I think it was. I used to scrape the valve covers on the road ramps :)
@@NetMillionaire I personally preferred this one, however scrambler is cheaper and has a cool look too. If you like the scrambler I’m sure it’ll still be a great bike.
Great review, thanks. Beautiful bike. Without liquid cooling, however, doesn’t that big engine get hot in stop and go traffic, particularly in summer ?
Maybe not quite the same but I have an R1100R and I live in Arizona. A couple of weeks ago I went on a long ride up into the mountains. But by the time I came back down to the desert it got warm and heat was pouring off the cylinders directly onto my mesh riding pants. It wasn’t too bad but I never noticed any heat before when riding in cooler temps. I would think if riding in a climate like the UK it would not be an issue. The cost of parts, now that’s an issue to give you pause!
I tried the quadlock charger but it didn’t survive Scottish rainfall. I’m sure it is possible but if I need to charge I just use a battery bank in my tank bag.
Thanks for your review! :-) Did you tire of the aluminum look after some time? That’s also my top preference, so I’m wondering how it’s been for you now that it’s been 2 years.
Excellent video, enjoyed the prattling on. I sorely wish I lived in such a beautiful place. I have long been a fan of the r9t and the 2021 models look nicer than ever. I recently bought a Ducati Scambler and commute for 40 minutes through central Paris and outskirts and the Ducati seems as good as it can get for the purposes but...I am tempted to switch to the r9t in a year or so just because it is so beautiful, well made and reliable. Have you tried it in dense city traffic? I spend half the time filtering and I'm concerned that the extra weight and width would be a handicap.
It’s nice to know someone appreciates the prattling! 😀 When the Ducati Scrambler came out I was convinced I was going to get one; they’re so stylish and absolutely gorgeous! However I felt a little too big for it with my ample proportions and the R Nine T is just a little bit beefier. I have not tried it in city traffic, just because of where I live, however it really does feel like quite a light and agile bike so I don’t think it would present too many problems. I do filter through town traffic when it’s at a standstill because of traffic lights and such and it feels plenty agile enough. I’m not sure if maybe it’s a fair bit wider than the scrambler though... Also, the grass is always greener and I actually love the Ducati Scrambler. I’d probably be tempted to keep it if it’s doing the intended job really well. 🙂
@@MrNeilfatmonkey Thanks for the sage advice. The grass is indeed always greener, not that I see a lot of it in Paris. The Scrambler is a gorgeous bike and does put a huge smile on my face every time I ride it. And as a slight person (5"8 and 62kg) it probably is a perfect fit. But knowing me, I'll keep fantasising about the R9t until I test ride a 2021 model in spring. Take care and ride safe
@@tonydare7614 I am certainly not immune to that nagging feeling when you really want something, but in my experience it doesn’t really change anything that much getting the newest thing, or a “better” thing. 😁 Have a great day and stay safe in Paris!
Love this review thanks, with swearing thats grows too, ha ha. I'm in love with this bike, but 15 years away from an xjr400 now. and 5'2" tall midget woman, so don't know what to do as this is a mega heavy bike and a bit tall for me. Bastard short legs the brain of my life!!!. I WANT ONE!!.
S Dalloway there’s nothing wrong with being short! I had a girlfriend once that was 4’11” but she always said “and a half!”. This is a fairly low bike with a low centre of gravity, so you never know; you might just make it work. Perhaps wear platforms? 😀 What other options do you have in the current bike lineup? Are there any bikes that would fit your inside leg?
great video, enjoyed it a lot! Me and my son are getting (each) a nineT pure next spring. could you add the links to the accessories you referenced in your video (mirror, tail) in the description or in your answer?

Good review, Iv got a 2014 and love it other than the non adjustable suspension which is not good and im 85kg but its worth fixing as the bike is awesome.
Brought mine after watching your vlog and it's the best bike I've ever owned! Thank you Neil 👍👍👍
Hi Neil, Nice to see an owner's review from someone who has spent their own money, and lived with the bike for a while...
What a great review, I’m looking to buy one, and this owner’s perspective is what I’m looking for. Great stuff Neil, thank you
Did you get one? Lots for sale but they really hold their value. Hoping to get a good one for £6K.
That was just lovely to watch :) I had the pleasure of spending several hours riding one when I had my previous bike in for a service at the BMW dealer. I loved everything about it, from its gorgeous looks to the way it rocked side-to-side when I revved it at a standstill.
I hope yours brings you thousands more happy miles!
ubergreg thank you. I have no intention of changing it for anything else. I absolutely love it.
Great review. I know it was a couple of years ago, but still very enjoyable and relevant today. Thanks.
Thanks for the vid. It’s nice to hear an opinion of someone that actually owns the bike. I just pulled the trigger on a ‘22 model and take delivery in a few weeks. I’m beyond excited:) thanks again

Gerry Arnoes great to hear!
I’d never heard of this bike until I visited my local bike showroom. There she stood with a gloss grey primer tank & tan seat. Flat Twin gorgeousness. My jaw dropped & I was mumbling all sorts to myself. My next bike for sure.
sefton1972 that’s great news! Judging from your username we were born in the same year so it must be a sign that you’ll love it. 😁
Neil Gregson a vintage year for sure.
I want one !!
Jeff Sappington thank you very much. I do still enjoy the bike very much.
Excellent honest review I’ve had mine six months and you review is spot on.
David Eccles thank you. Enjoy yours!
Have a 2016 r nine t and love it,every time I ride it it makes me smile, enough said.
Allen Cody I don’t think you’d regret it, but whatever you choose I’m sure you’ll love. Thanks for your comment.
Hey young fella, enjoyed your insight to the r9t.
As always Scotland.....top roads, top place and top people.
Will continue to search out your vlogs in future, thank you!
Stephen Critchley thank you. Hopefully with the weather improving, and lockdown easing soon, I should be able to go a little further afield.
Absolutely ferkin brilliant vlog Neil, so enjoyable to watch and listen too. the roads around Elgin are superb if a long, long way away from me here in the channel Islands. Stay safe :)
Thank you so much. The Channel Islands must have some nice roads too, surely? I’d imagine much nicer weather also. 😀
A most delightful time shared with you this morning.Lovely country side , much like central New York believe it or not.Great review indeed.Cheers mate :>)
Thank you so much. I’ve been up in the north east of the States on a few occasions and completely agree on the similar countryside.
Thanks. Seriously considering one....this is a great help
I love my R9T so much, there is really nothing to complain about its just an all around great machine. Looks amazing , sounds amazing , rides amazing. BMW nailed it with the Nine T, kind of like they always do. One of the best bikes I have ever owned for sure.
ARCHIE VISION agreed! I’m glad you’re still in love with yours.
Good luck in your search. I’m sure whatever you choose will be great, especially after 10 years away.
@@MrNeilfatmonkey Thanks! Can't wait!

Thank you sir, for making a review and sharing your personal opinion as a owner after months of riding the r9t. I am looking forward to own one. Very likely.
liew samuel you’re very welcome. I hope you enjoy it if you do buy one.
I really do like these bikes, and this was some very good quality content, subbed!
Really good and practical review Greg. Well done
Great review, really enjoyed it.
What a beautiful part of the country you live in, hope to explore it some time.
Cracking bike too.
The R Nine T certainly has the looks and the shaft drive and engine give it character. The exhaust note through the standard Akrapovic on my roadster is sublime and I’ve not even taken out the baffles.
It really is a great bike for cruising with little bursts of speed.
Lovely ride, actually a great owner's review, nice one!
Thank you, Tim.
Barney Manningtree thank you! Sounds pretty ideal for where you live too! Does the engine play ok in the heat?

Great video. Really practical approach to describing and reviewing the bike.
Thank you. I hope you enjoyed it.
The Speed twin was going to be the next go to and then I seen the R9T for the first time and fell in love with the design and after a little Personalisation I feel I can really make it mine, it looks fantastic and I can’t wait to go ride one, i’m currently recovering from a hernia operation and will be off work for the next five weeks but can’t wait to get to the shops when they open 😎 I’m on the large side also 6,1 & 108 kg and thought that the Trident would be a little small for me so listening to say that you find your bike comfortable and you’re a big chat then it’s probably what I go for, thank you again for the review more videos of the bike please 👍
I also have a 2015 Triumph Tiger kitted out with side boxes heated seats and grips me and my partner like to go out on the bikes so it would be nice to have one just for me 😊
Thanks for your kind words.
You're teaching me the roads already, and the r nine t is on my list of possible future bikes, belter lol
moody I lived in Nairn for many years. The back road out to Grantown-on-Spey is a beauty!
I lived this video and your points and your humour. Like you I don't need rider aids... just keep it old school pure.

what do you think it would be like to tour in europe - with luggage but without a pillion?

What a pleasant review 👍🏻 I ride a 1100 XX Blackbird and I know I would miss the phenomenal power - but bikes like this (or the Triumph Thruxton RS) appeal to me on another level in regards to looks and convenience, and I would love to get one!

George Sweaton I do the opposite and work in Inverness so commute from Elgin. The GS is a lovely bike too.
great vid. Man your UK roads are smooth
Hey Neil
Thanks for the video.
So, I wanted to ask you a question
I haven't done much mileage and Since you've done almost 5000 miles when you did the video, I wanted to ask, do you genuinely believe you don't need to upgrade or adjust the suspension considering our weight?
@@MrNeilfatmonkey thanks a lot for your inputs. 🙏

@@MrNeilfatmonkey thank you 👌🏻
Great vid : nice roads and nice bike are in harmony !
SCSL67 thank you.
@@MrNeilfatmonkey Thanks Neil! New Zealand is a beautiful country and in deed the chocolate is awesome!! Not many tourists around these days...:)
@@posapie mine’s pretty dirty right now! I’ve been out on it a few times and there’s so much salt on the road up here that it’s filthy! 😀
Great review man. Moving from an adventure bike to the retro style, do you miss having a wind shield? Does the wind buffeting get too much?
Himanth Prathap I haven’t really noticed. The screen on my Triumph was a slightly higher one than normal but it doesn’t seem to have made a massive difference to me going to a naked bike again.
Best Bike Ever R NineT Euro 3 ! 🔥
I went with an Evotech tail tidy available here:
piercitycustom.com/products/evotech-performance-bmw-r9t-tail-tidy
In fact, there’s a picture of my bike with it fitted on that page. I’m not affiliated with them in any way.
I installed a Daedalus tail tidy (company out of San Francisco) on my 2019 and absolutely love it.
Fantastic review
Thank you.
Ian Butcher wow! That’s amazing. Keep on riding it hard! I’m so glad to hear you still love yours; I can’t see me falling out of love with mine.
Single with carbon tip .
@@jakeyb6453 maybe try the one with the double barrelled single sided Akro if they still do them. It was actually the standard exhaust. I think it sounds gorgeous and I haven’t taken the baffles out of mine.
Brilliant review and I live and ride around Elgin and surrounding areas.
Anybody have any insight as to annual running or servicing costs for an R9T?
I don’t remember it being too bad. I used to get it serviced every year regardless, but I’d say it was new tyres every couple of years depending on your riding style and road surface, and an oil and filter change each year. I personally never had to top up with oil between services.
Thanks so much for the video. I’m swapping out my 9T Scramber (literally just run in) with a Sport so this video was extremely timely! Btw I’m from Elgin and thought the place looked familiar and got a surprise I saw Masonsieu Road! Must go up there sometime as it’s top bike country!
Ewan Sinclair` you did indeed see Masondieu road. There really are some great roads around here. Enjoy your new bike.
I got mine from here:
piercitycustom.com/products/evotech-performance-bmw-r9t-tail-tidy
In fact there’s a picture of it on my bike on that page.
Neil Gregson cheers Neil, I’ll have a lookee!
Otherwise I modded out my ali-seem weld RnineT Sport with a budget-blowing:
Ohlins rear
Akra Ti cat-free and flapper delete headers
sargent seat
rubber knee pads
719 bar-end mirrors
RSD headlight surround
Gilles Tooling rear-sets
Brembo RCS m/c 19 brake and 16 clutch with O-ring DOT replacement
Brembo M4 calipers
Brembo super sport rotors
Kineo spoked wheels (6" & 200 rear)
Hi Neil, whatts your experience about tires for the bike.
I've got nearly the same bike as you got and my Metzelers z8's are worn out now after 7000 miles
Similar, I think. I run Michelin road 5s and I’ve got about 7-8k miles.
Hi Neil, It is now September, 2022. Do you still own the R nine T and if so, do you still love it?
Neil Gregson picked one up last week! Loving it so far!
The countryside is so beautiful. My quest: Driving at 60 or 70 mph, do you get to enjoy the view?
Absolutely I do! However I do live here so get to see it all the time. 🥰
Hello from western Canada - I am considering the 2020 scrambler version. But yours is very similar.
Great video this or the scramble? ❤
@@NetMillionaire I personally preferred this one, however scrambler is cheaper and has a cool look too. If you like the scrambler I’m sure it’ll still be a great bike.
Great review, thanks. Beautiful bike. Without liquid cooling, however, doesn’t that big engine get hot in stop and go traffic, particularly in summer ?
no very cool riding bike minimal engine heat my bike of choice during summer months
I live in a very rural area so I don’t ever experience stop and go traffic. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
Hi Neil,
Great video, great bike. Do you know what kind of mpg you get from your R Nine T?
I typically get 48-50mpg but mostly at around 60-70mph. All my riding is rural, really.
Something specific I'm wondering; I see you have your phone mounted, but is it also possible to charge the phone while mounted on the bike?
I tried the quadlock charger but it didn’t survive Scottish rainfall. I’m sure it is possible but if I need to charge I just use a battery bank in my tank bag.
Thanks for your review! :-) Did you tire of the aluminum look after some time? That’s also my top preference, so I’m wondering how it’s been for you now that it’s been 2 years.
I’ve actually had it for almost 4 years now and I still love the colour scheme. I mostly have a silver hump on it now.
Lovely Road, greetings from Bavaria
Alexander Schmidt greetings to you too. You have some lovely roads there.
Lovely sweet handling bike how’s the comfort after an hour? Ps what road was that you where riding on cheers👍👍
Mike Lee on the standard seat it’s fine for an hour or more, even for a fatty.
The road was mostly the A95 from Craigellachie to Keith
Have a great day and stay safe in Paris!
Such a nice road!
It really is!
Great review love the bike always have :-) Stay safe and Thank you Neil
Thank you so much. You too!
Great insight! How tall are you?
I’m 180cm so pretty average.
What other options do you have in the current bike lineup? Are there any bikes that would fit your inside leg?
They have a low seat height option. 30" I believe.....
great video, enjoyed it a lot! Me and my son are getting (each) a nineT pure next spring. could you add the links to the accessories you referenced in your video (mirror, tail) in the description or in your answer?
