I picked up my 9T (low mileage 2016) a few weeks ago and am loving it. Tested the 9T and Thruxton back to back and I totally agree about the sense of fun and engagement with the BMW. Forgot to mention as a fifty something old man, I went to dealers to test ride a gs1200, just could not do it. I test rode the r1200r (bit more funky)but got back and took one look at 9 at. Such a good looking bike I bought one. No regrets that was 3000 miles ago no regrets.

I do suffer from numb fingers and I get this on other bikes I have. But the two together sorted me out. Tends to be worse 4000rpm. Hope this helps if anyone else has similar issue. I was caught out when I put in £1.89 embarrasing, I'd forgotten I'd filled it up the day before. Love the paint scream, i think a nice Kawasaki racing gream for me.
I've been okay with regard to numbness, generally speaking; I started using a Scottoiler Cramp Buster a while back, though, which is great if I feel some tingles coming on. I can just relax my throttle hand. Try the trick I mentioned using the Trip I indicator. Just reset it each time you fill up, and you know you're going to get over 100 miles before the warning light comes on.

I have a pure, the lack of fuel gauge is annoying. the sixth gear is not tall enough. I would probably get rid of the exhaust valve thing that makes the pop pop noise....other than that I will keep this motorcycle until I'm old, its a blast to ride and the ASC is amazing. I agree about lack of storage is annoying also. Also would help me out if you can give me an idea of what KM you get from full to as close to empty....I'm thinking 280KM is the max it will go on only highway. Going by what it claimes it should get close to 400km to a tank.
I agree with you about the fuel gauge (I'ver got used to using the Trip 1 reading - which I reset on each fill-up - to assess fuel requirements at any given time) but haven't found an issue with the gearing. It's worth noting that removing the flapper gives you slightly more snap, crackle and pop on the overrun, though. Personally I LOVE that. As for range, I'm getting a very consistent 45mpg riding mostly urban but with some open roads thrown in for good measure. I tend to bottle it at 120+ miles, though, and I've not really pushed it to find the maximum as I'd rather not have to call out the RAC!

Next time I ride my little SV650, I'll pretend it's an R9-T. Beautiful bike. Hey, your mirrors changed between the riding footage and the dismounted footage!
Haha - that's funny! And well done on being the ONLY person to spot that. I realised when I edited the video that the footage for the walkaround had some problems. I couldn't get out to reshoot it straight away, and by the time I did... yes, I'd changed the mirrors :)
I have a modified 2017 R9T. And we're all waiting to hear what the bike sounds like of course. Unfortunately for us die hard petrol heads, everyone else seems to be raving about electric bikes and some manufacturers are now producing prototypes. I even saw a Harley electric bike being advertised. Really? A Harley?? Can you imagine the future of biking?? Surely half of why we ride bikes is for the visceral experience - the feel, the sight and the sound. What will happen to biking when they kill the sound of your next bike? I guess some of us will just have to continue being 'old die hard petrol heads'!
I know exactly what you mean, although performance-wise they clearly deliver. I reckon the internal combustion engine has a life expectancy of about 20 years so I guess we'd better make the most of them.
Thanks. Well, the bike is more than capable but I'm not sure that the stock seats (either the 2-piece or the double bench seat) are ideal. Too thin and not enough decent padding for comfort, so for regular 2-up use I'd be looking for aftermarket alternatives.
Excellent video. I sorely wish I lived in such a beautiful place. I have long been a fan of the r9t and the 2021 models look nicer than ever. I recently bought a Ducati Scambler and commute for 40 minutes through central Paris and outskirts and the Ducati seems as good as it can get for the purposes but...I am tempted to switch to the r9t in a year or so just because it is so beautiful, well made and reliable. Have you tried it in dense city traffic? I spend half the time filtering and I'm concerned that the extra weight and width would be a handicap.
Many thanks, Tony. The R9T is a lovely bike, and I can couch for its suitability for urban riding given that I do many of my miles in London and filter constantly. The weight is very low down due to it being a boxer engine, and whilst it looks quite wide the engine is no wider than the handlebars so you soon get used to it without worrying. Yes, it's a relatively heavy bike but you don't really feel the weight and it's very maneuverable.
Nice video and review 👍 👌, I had a test ride on the Urban GS and fell in love with the boxer engine. Your R ninety is a great looking bike! Cheers, Steve
I’m not sure that overheating an air/oil cooled engine that is in no way shrouded from the air is an issue. Water cooling can be problematic because even coolant has a relatively low boiling point and even if the system doesn’t overpressurize the system the coolant will turn to vapor in the hot spots in the engine and then cooling stops. These motors were designed for oil cooling with fins all over the cylinders. It would take a lot to overheat one of these motors.
I'm sure you're right. That said, not providing a temperature gauge on a bike of this price/quality (especially an air/oil cooled bike) is to me nothing short of weird.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog My Buell XB9 Lightning, a bike with an air cooled V-twin whose cylinders are directly in line and whose rear cylinder is surrounded by a large frame, doesn't have a temperature gauge and my Kawasaki Z1000 doesn't have a temperature gauge. I think that my Z1000 does have a light. I had a VFR 800 once that gave a temperature and people worried as the temperature got to 100C because they did not understand what the boiling point of coolant was or the effects of a pressurized cooling system. In that case, too much info was a bad thing.
Did you consider the Triumph Speed Twin? I think the Speed Twin and R9T are very similar in terms of retro/heritage, power, torque, handling, price, etc. I cannot make up my mind between the two. I used to own an R1200 GS, and I have tested the Speed Twin, so I suppose I'd better go and test the R9T to get a better perspective.
Peter Hatfield I didn’t, Peter - not because it isn’t a brilliant bike but more because it’s a kind of bigger/faster version of the Street Triple, and I was perfectly happy with the Triple’s performance. Get yourself an a 9T 👍🏼
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Thanks! BTW, I forgot to mention that I really love the colour of your bike - it really stands out in the nicest possible way. It's a shame that the standard colour for the R9T is black - not a colour I really like. And your mods are just right - I bet it's a keeper for now.
Actually, the tail tidy was one of a few things already on the bike when I bought it, and I can't see a brand on it. However, both Evotech and R&G have something that looks very similar (hope that helps).
Just wondering if you could advise me. I’m 66 and been riding a street twin for 2 years, having not ridden for 40yrs. I have been thinking of buying the rninet but I’m only 5ft 6in with 29in leg. What would your advice be ?
Derek, I'm 5'6" with a 30" inside leg. I can flat foot it easily and because the weight is low down it's probably easier in that respect than the Street Twin was (which is a similar weight, from memory). You'' be fie, but maybe see if you can arrange a test ride to ease your mind? (Oh, I'm 59, by the way, and not heavily built.)
Guy On a Bike thanks for getting back to me so promptly, very much appreciate your response. Will make contact with my local bmw garage in Chester and take it from there.
Yes, I agree with you about the weight - luckily I could paddle it backwards and forwards, which saved having to push it. But it's no lightweight, for sure.
What a great review ! I found myself agreeing with just about everything you said. The speedo dial is a real pain, I have toyed with the idea of placing larger self adhesive numbers at 30,50,70. In relation to the lack of a fuel gauge, it's a bit difficult to swallow on a bike of this price. I got it into my head that you could travel about 50 miles when the light comes on and the display starts to count miles covered on reserve ... 38 miles later I ran out but was fortunately only about 300 metres from a garage ! The 'burnt orange' colour looks great and is reminiscent of one of the colours used on the R90s from the 70's.
Thanks Andy - glad you enjoyed it. There is a way to swap the speedo dial out (I know that some of the guys on the R9T Forum negotiated a group buy for a nice clean replacement) but the lack of both fuel and temperature gauges is a real pain. That said, no bike is perfect and the R9T's character more than makes up for it's deficiencies. Agree about the colour - it's lovely and does have a touch of the 70's about it.
Ah - now, for reasons I won't go into there were two types used on this video; some unbranded lane-splitter things and some Puig that were actually pretty good. However, both pairs always ended up becoming loose and it was getting quite irritating in the end; I now use Oberon Performance and they're the best of the lot by a large margin, and seem rock solid.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Ah thanks for the feedback. I am eyeing the Oberon ones as well, but not sure how they will look on my scrambler. Nice to hear that you are happy. Another option are the Wunderlich ones, but very price in my opinion. Cheers
Lovely paint job, very different from the norm! I have an XSR900 and T120 but now I also would like an R9T!! FFS my wife is gonna kill me! One question (for anyone really)... do you struggle to see the speed reading (dial) at all? Looks very small
haha... thank you, and just say that you've saved the best till last ;) You're right about the speedo readings... not great, to be honest, and just about the only thing about the bike that i don't like.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Thanks for your response. I'm in love with R9Ts and currently looking for one under $9000, which is why I'm looking at pre-owned models from 2015/2016. Thanks again!
Thank you - they're such wonderful bikes, aren't they? The paintwork is BMW's Burnt Orange (with some Burnt Orange Flake along the tank centre line and on the front fender).

@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Yeah it's sad here from BMW India. And the after sales service is a joke. BMW also doesn't respond to customer complaints. Partially due to weak consumer law here.

The Guzzi is a lovely bike, but it has nothing like the power of the R9T. I guess it depends on your riding but on the highways there'd be no comparison.
The Guzzi is a beautiful bike, and it depends on whether you want performance or not. The Guzzi is unfortunately lacking in performance in a huge way. I had a Guzzi Le Mans in the eighties and it was a rocket ship compared to the V7. If performance isn’t a factor, buy the one that appeals to you more when it’s standing still. Take both for a ride and see which you prefer.

Great motorbike, in your opinion about the short trip with the passenger, it is quite comfortable? Thanks
Thanks. Well, the bike is more than capable but I'm not sure that the stock seats (either the 2-piece or the double bench seat) are ideal. Too thin and not enough decent padding for comfort, so for regular 2-up use I'd be looking for aftermarket alternatives.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog thanks 👍
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog many thanks for your swift reply. I fear that my Ducati may not last past spring and an rninet may be sitting in its place 😊
It looks stunning in red! Where did you get that done?
Thanks. That's how it left the factory, it seems.
Nice video and review 👍 👌, I had a test ride on the Urban GS and fell in love with the boxer engine. Your R ninety is a great looking bike! Cheers, Steve
Thanks Steve. I've taken the UGS as a loaner a couple of times, and really enjoyed riding it on both occasions.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog What type of this BMW RnT? it's so rare seeing a red BMW Rnt. Usually it's red and blue.
@@yehezkielareth5496 It"s the classic. The paint job is non-standard but out of the factory.
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Uhm, sorry. Is that mean that you painted the bike by yourself?

Beaut bike,i love the colour 😊

@@peterhatfield5632 That's very kind of you, and yes - definitely a keeper!
Love this bike! Feels so weird to see someone drive on the left side.
Haha... don't try this at home 😀 ( and thanks)!

nice! where did u get the fuel tank color from?
Thanks. It was the factory finish - Burnt Orange/Burnt Orange Flake. There's only a few of them out there, from what I understand.

Hi there! Do you have a link or a name for this tail tidy that you installed?
@@derekturner9514 Good luck - let me know how you get on!
Guy On a Bike will do my friend🏍
500 miles is a nice weekend of riding.
Hah! I guess it would be, in an ideal world (which, in riding terms, mine isn't):)
Good looking and powerful bike. Just too heavy while parking for me.
Yes, I agree with you about the weight - luckily I could paddle it backwards and forwards, which saved having to push it. But it's no lightweight, for sure.
She looks great 👍🏻
Thanks mate :)
Luv it or hate it.. Recently Change exhaust & heard every notes in every throttle.
The bike sounds amazing - even with the stock cans.
A thing of beauty!
Thank you very much, Jan!
That numberplate holder looks not good but that red is nice.
Glad you like the colour, Georg, thanks. I like the number plate holder too :)
My 2015 nine T is being delivered tomorrow ..... yes .....
Welcome to the family!
Thanks mate , weathers pants here but ...I can wait ...NOT !......lol
It’s arrived and it’s awesome
@@delstephens7441 Of course it is!!! Congratulations :)
Did you paint it, or was it factor paint?
It was a factory paint job, using non-standard BMW colours (burnt orange/burnt orange flake).
Hello, what are your end mirrors? Cheers
Cheers
@@georgiosyiannakou5537 They'll look great on the Scrambler and are a whole lot cheaper!

Lovely paint job, very different from the norm! I have an XSR900 and T120 but now I also would like an R9T!! FFS my wife is gonna kill me!
One question (for anyone really)... do you struggle to see the speed reading (dial) at all? Looks very small
haha... thank you, and just say that you've saved the best till last ;)

Thank you - they're such wonderful bikes, aren't they? The paintwork is BMW's Burnt Orange (with some Burnt Orange Flake along the tank centre line and on the front fender).

It's my dream bike but unfortunately in India it costs 28000$ :(
Arnab Roy Wow - that’s nuts!
@@GuyOnaBikeMotovlog Yeah it's sad here from BMW India. And the after sales service is a joke. BMW also doesn't respond to customer complaints. Partially due to weak consumer law here.
LoVe It!!!!
Classic = Most Expensive R9T
Thanks - the Classic is a lovely bike but I can see why people opt for the other models too. Such a great range of bikes, and if I was buying again knowing what I know now I'd probably go for the Pure and then customise the shit out of it.
I really don’t know why BMW stick with the silly hard to read speedo in this day and age, got a feeling it’s cost cutting!
Well, I don't mind analogue clocks on a "heritage" bike but I don't know why they can't be legible (like, say, Triumph's)!
I've been 100% convinced that I was going to buy a Moto Guzzi v7 racer generation 2... 100% sure until I saw this bike and now I'm all confused!!! I found one near where I live with about 2,000 mi on it for about $8,500 😉
The Guzzi is a lovely bike, but it has nothing like the power of the R9T.
