  • BMW R nine T 2023 ; BMW made its intentions clear when bringing the R nine T motorcycle, with its iconic boxer engine and its classic roadster looks, to the world of street cred conscious customers.
They sat their bike atop the modern retro segment of the market which is a perfect place to be because who can resist this cool style when paired with modern dynamics and state of the art components.
Yet with an engine having its roots in the mid 20th century can this German thoroughbred deliver emotional pleasure together with all of the necessary 21st Century dynamics and performance?
Well why don't you join me Roger Bailey on a journey of discovery across some of the very best roads the UK has to offer.

I’m 63 and came off a GSA for an R Nine T Scrambler because I wanted to be more flat footed. Technology wise the GSA wins but the 9T is the most fun I’ve had on a bike in a long time.

That’s hilarious- I’m nearly following the same pattern- except my knees ain’t the best - hence my exit from GSA ownership- no off road for me anymore. If finance gets approved, I’ll pick up my ex demo (750km) this week!

I really like the look of the R9T. I’ve never ridden an opposed twin before. I do have a V-twin, an inline 4 and a large displacement single right now though and imagine it being closer to the V-twins low and midrange pull than the screaming top end of the inline 4. I doubt it is anything like the single but I could be totally wrong. I could see a R9T in the garage if I had any room left. I think of all the retro bikes that manufacturers have been releasing lately BMW’s design really hits the mark

One of the biggest reasons I love BMW and Moto Guzzi…the shaft drive. Once I experienced the shaft, I find it difficult to ever go back to anything else. It’s not that I’m against cleaning, adjusting, etc the chain…I just prefer spending my time getting on the bike and riding it. When I want to hit a long distance ride, no problem at all. Also, the lack of fuel gauge is really no issue to me. I grew up riding dirt bikes, you just use the odometer to estimate your range. No big deal. Fantastic video and I love the helmet!

Great film and outstanding review. I have the exact same bike with same wheels. I put on a tail tidy and upgraded the rear suspension, and it is now utter perfection. I’ve had many bikes including modern GSs but this one has gotten under the skin and is definitely a keeper. Brilliant on the back roads obviously and pootling around town, but I also find it’s perfectly happy and planted on a motorway despite the windblast. Lack of fuel gauge is a quirk but count up the miles between refilling and you easily get into a groove and don’t miss it. Cheers

Greetings Roger! Thanks for the excellent video. FWIW, I've owned many BMWs over the years (R80/7, R65/7, R1200C Montauk, K1200LT, R1200RT, R1150R, K1300S, R1200GSA - My local dealer cried when I walked away from motorcycles in 2014 - but I digress...) and the one I think I miss most is the R80/7. It was a European spec unit with low bars and side cases (don't recall the correct names, so I won't try to guess) and it was my 1st Boxer Twin. Used to ride in Japan with a guy who rode an iron-head sportster. We'd stop at restaurants and watch folks do double-takes as they walked past our motorcycles. The R nine T reminds me of those days and those rides. Thanks for the reminder and have a great ride today, wherever you are. Cheers!

That was a real surprise … but perhaps not upon reflection. Something that I soon learnt after joining my local Porsche Owners’ Club was how many members were fellow motorcyclists, many of whom had Ducatis like me, and a good proportion of which were either the more retro newer models or older models themselves. It’s interesting to note the complete contrast between car and motorcycle transmissions: while the vast majority of performance cars now have PDK or similar, if you rode an automatic performance bike you’d be laughed out of the room. Another wonderful video Roger.

I love the look of this bike and I took it for test ride here in Munich and got disappointed by many things about this bike(scrambler), like the foot pegs always hitting your fit when you are standing in the traffic, the dry clutch is very punchy and not smooth and the vibration in a long ride is a bit annoying. For this price you can get triumph speed twin that is wayyyy better bike to ride, more comfortable and easy to ride. What do you think? How was your experience with this bike?

Superb review. You deserve to be noticed. I ride a BMWR1250R (perhaps the big brother of the R nineT). It does have more power, and does handle very well, but I like the simplicity of the R nineT. No LCD display, just ordinary clocks, I do not appreciate keyless ignition, and I wonder if the nineT is lighter in its handling, thus more pleasurable to ride. My BM is a bugger to start in cold weather, I wonder if the same is true of the nineT.

I own a Yamaha XSR900: better performance, less weight, better fuel efficiency and costs 40% less than this BMW. This company does not know to offer value for your bucks. I stumbled upon this review and I’m not sure why I watched it, but it was interesting. I have some observations and comments based on my owning a RnineT for 3 years. This review seemed to focus on the retro qualities of the bike and its build qualities. I can agree it’s a fantastic looking machine that deserves all those accolades, but for me the ownership experience was terribly let down by some basics. Suspension was rock hard and dulled the riding experience immensely, for the price, having to shell out another couple of grand to fix the suspension on an initial expensive purchase was not nice and shouldn’t be. The seat felt like riding on a washboard and was the MOST uncomfortable I’ve ever had. I picked my bike up on an overcast day and it was spitting a little rain, when I stopped an hour later the crap the was flung up my back was not expected. For the price it could and should be better. Looks amazing but let down by basic practicality, so much so I went from riding my triumph regularly to the BMW just sitting in the shed. I sold it 3 years later and haven’t regretted it at all.

I'm not a huge motorcycle fan anymore. But having wanted one when I was 16 and being swayed to wait a year to get my driving licence, I never even got to ride one. Hence, when I was in my very early 20's, I got myself the nearest to a motorbike. An MG Midget 8-))... Only heavy rain or dark, freezing winter nights ever forced me to put the hood up.
That aside, I still love the look of the more retro looking bikes. None of those fairings you get on most modern bikes nowadays.
So you're an ex Hells Angel are you? You've kept this a bit of a secret from us all Mr. B. 8-))...
A great video yet again Mr. B.. I hope Jilly's OK. Send her my regards and fingers crossed for her ;-))...
    Your No1 Stalker 8-))...

Well said Roger. Didn't realise you are a fellow Porsche GT3 owner and bike rider. thumbs up.
Rode 40years on sports bikes then broke my neck a few years ago (fell of a horse, not bike) and couldn't ride anymore. Then discovered a the R1200GS, upright position with the bullet proof boxer engine = BMW brilliant bikes.

I love my 2020 9T Scrambler. Great review. Capturing the essence of riding in general and why this bike multiplies the factors that make riding great.

I got one at the end of March, after coming from a V4 tuono.
Love the analog feel and that you’ve got to ride the bike and not be a passenger.
The only things I don’t like are the lack of pillion/luggage capacity and the rear shock.

I think the direct competitor by Triumph the Speed Twin 1200 is the better choice from my p.o.v.. It comes 9with a little less power and torque, but still more than enough for public roads - at least if you want to keep your license.
And I know taste is a personal thing, it's an opinion and I think the Triumph is much more elegant, much more balanced designed than the BMW with its reliable but ugly engine. Sorry if someone is upset about my perspective. Just wanted to mention it ...
