2021 BMW R nineT Urban GS review - still the best retro bike?

- The 2021 BMW R nineT (or R9T if you're down with da kidz) has quite a few tweaks - it's down 1hp, it's Euro5 compliant, it has new electronics and tweaked rear suspension. Join me on a £12,000 Urban GS model for a country ride, a trip around town, some motorway riding and some blathering about mass centralisation that even I found boring.

Good comprehensive video. I ordered one about 3 weeks ago but the one with the updated suspension and brakes, end of May delivery so excited.

@@timrodierides Tim, thanks. I went for the 719 aluminium with the two billet packs, comfort pack, tubeless spoked wheels and the adaptive headlight. Might do a video on the billet packs to show folks exactly what you get..

@@timrodierides Tim, that’s a nice 719 colour as well. I went for the shadow billet packs. Apparently the cylinder heads are a slightly different design from the 2020 model. Almost seems a shame to put guard covers on the cylinders so might just put on protection bars instead, at least then you can see the cylinder heads..
Thank you for the video and opinion about the r nine T urban GS. I take in good count your opinion because I’m a subscriber of the channel And I share the same general preferences that you have about this marvelous two wheels machines we adore. For instance, I have a SDGT and I know that you, like myself, get enormous pleasure riding that hooligan bike.
But in fact I never have ridden a R nine t BMW and this particular presentation says something to me. And I’ll give it a try.
The RT is an excellent tourer. A proper bike for two people and luggage in order to make long bike traveling tours, for sure. It is very close to the sensation you get when you go traveling on a convertible car, but better with increments of incomparable pleasure. With that big windshield you can ride fast and still ear that big boxer engine in every gear which increases the fun of riding a bike without the negative effect of being loud on the road. That’s a bike with an excellent road presence, on daylight or at night also, so probably an all around bike if you choose not to do any heavy off-road road trails.

I am personally more of a fan with the scrambler, but truth be told all these bikes are beauties to behold

Had my UGS for 2.5 years been excellent, especially over the crap roads we have having come from sports bikes, it is quick enough.
I remember being left for dead by an R9T ridden by a local on some Swiss mountain passes - I was on a Multistrada 1200 as well!

Hi Tim, would you rather this or the original r nine t? I’m looking to change from my mt10 as the wheelie prone nature/novelty has worn off a bit! I want something fast enough but still handles our rubbish roads well. Can’t have a gs as I’m too short. Your opinion would be welcome. Loving the work 👍🏻

I own the RnineT scrambler. Def best bike i've ever owned. Not the fastest, my zx10r could smoke it, but somehow the scrambler is still more fun to ride.

Enjoy your content, BMW talks about these bikes having a dry clutch. Is that something you notice or have to be careful about? Perhaps one wouldn’t slip the clutch as much as you would with other bikes.
I didn’t notice it at all - I didn’t actually know it had a dry clutch, but it feels fine slipping the clutch around town. A world away from the one on my old 1198.

It has the old CamHead engine from the GS of 2009. So even the Recluse auto-clutch for the GS should fit.

Would you really recommend this as a first motorcycle? I'm looking to get my first bike soon. So far I've only ridden my friend's Ducati Scrambler Icon and that went fine. I did find the throttle to be a bit snatchy though which he warned me about. If I were to buy this BMW, it'd be after my safety course in July or a little before. I've been told by other people that this has too much power for a first bike. What do you think?
Hi.. I feel its worth doing time on lesser capacity eg the icon or mt07 type power... as they offer fun but can still get into trouble as they quick enough. However i have a bmw scrambler and yes it could be a bike for newer riders may be 2nd or 3rd bike as every thing about it is smooth and easy to ride, but it has mass and torque, so equally if still gaining skills it may catch a new rider out with how well it carries speed. I love the r nine t range and have multiple bikes to gauge it by.
I told my agusta f3 800 to a new rider who bougjt it as his 2nd bike he is in his late 30s and ive been worried about him since... But he seamed sensible and we all have our own choices to make... Hope this helps. Good fair review by the tester.
Ps to me the bike also feels like a friend who looks out for you: easy, kind, trusted, underestimated, endearing, characterfull, and strangly bland/ vanilla.... At the same time ( so unfair to the bike) But i like vanilla it my favorite ice cream.
The weired thing is that if i dont ride the scrambler for a while i really miss it more than others which I'd rather not mention but they include a mix of super motardish/ sport 1000cc/ other naked model. To give perspective.

The aftermarket exhaust isn't necessary on this bike as the OE one sounds/looks great. More practical as it's lower. I think the bike could do with a rev counter and main stand.
One of my favourite bikes but a bit expensive. I did 91,000 miles on an R1100GS.
Whilst I prefer the look of the Scrambler, I chose the UGS precisely because the single silencer sounds so much better. Never mind paying over £400 extra to downgrade to the twin silencer.

Personally, I would spend £300 or so,on a decat set of downpipes,for cooler running and less weight. Stock silencer could be retained.

I have always liked this bike and have been watching it since the introduction, but without cruise control I will not get serious about it!

@@timrodierides I must have missed this in the option listing. Again, I have been watching this bike since introduced because it checks the boxes for me but one. Not for long trips, but daily and weekend solo riding and also possibly fire roads. Maybe short weekend bike camping? Thanks
@@pointdoc1 yep it’s perfect for those - there’s a Scrambler version which would be better for (light) dirt trails. It’s a great bike - I remember struggling to keep up with one on a Swiss mountain pass while I was on a Multistrada with 50hp more!
@@timrodierides I like that it doesn't have all of the plastic that an "AV" bike has; so I suspect that I could also either put it in the back of my truck and do the long road trip to wherever and either/or camp and ride, or even load in onto a motorcycle hitch rack and transport it this way to a destination.
I had an R80GS Paris Dakar with a 32 litre tank. It would be great if you could get one of those tanks as an optional extra.

@@viejo1698 ah apologies. Yes, they’ve changed it - but it still feels a bit harsh to me at slow speeds. When you’re riding quickly it feels fine - stable and gives you confidence!

I really don’t like the leg ergonomics on it , your torso is upright but the lower half is almost sportbike like with your legs ..was bad enough I had to walk away from my test ride after less than 10 minutes ..the seat also feels quite low , narrow and hard ...looks and sounds great shit eating grin with the engine as well but a definite no from me ..just because of the strange ergonomics of it
Each of the 4 variations of the nineT has a different riding posture - that is completely intentional to assure there is one for every riding style. However it’s impossible to have a model for every riders height and personal preference. Most folks who feels it’s too far forward just change out the handlebars or put them on an extender/riser. Quite an easy mod if that’s your biggest gripe about an otherwise great bike. The Urban GS fit me perfect in stock form so hard to blame your discomfort on the design

@@timrodierides good to hear. I recently sold my R9T and currently picking between the hyper and the monster 1200.
@@Foxhound89 I've only ridden a mate's Monster 1200S (I think it was a 2016 bike) and I really didn't like the handling - it felt like it wanted to flop into corners and you had to hold the bars up mid-corner. I don't think there was anything wrong with it. The Hyper is much more fun (for me at least), and handles superbly

I shopped for a hyper first - but the cost of insurance was several multiples above the cost of insuring a RNineT. That was the end of my dream of owning a hyper.
Odd that here in Oz we pay the same price as the UK for bikes but anal raped for cars.

I did until I rode the Triumph Speed Twin…
I rode the 2022 Speed Twin aswell and loved it.
@timrodierides I loved my Speed Twin,once I upgraded the dreadful suspension and added a Zard 2:1........Until it destroyed its gearbox at 10,000 miles,3 months out of warranty and having had an additional oil and filter change to the recommended schedule. Triumph weren't interested in why it failed,or offering any help towards repair. They obviously felt it acceptable that a 12k motorcycle should fail at that mileage, and at a risk to the riders safety. Never touch another Thai Triumph again,and happy with my second purchase of a R nine T.
@@g.g.6362 wow that’s not good at all. I was riding a 2021 steet Twin before changing to Yamaha and I must say I did have several issue all repaired under warranty though.
@c.g.c2067 Very disappointing and unacceptable attitude from Triumph. I would have thought that they'd be interested in why their product failed,in such a potentially dangerous way.....but there you go.
