Today we crack a 1952 Mickey Mantle PSA Slab and resubmit to SGC... what will it grade? How do you resub a graded card? How do you crack a BGS / PSA / SGC Slab or graded card?
It’s much easier/safer to cut a corner off the holder and then use a flat head screwdriver to pry the case apart. Cracking it down the center seems risky
Appreciate it John!
Definitely agree I would never crack in the middle. I go top right then very carefully use a flathead around the slab.
100 % Agree
Yep I tape off both corners with painters tape diagonally as a guide, then use a chop saw to cut the corners and then pry open with a flat head. Never had a single issue doing it this way.
💯
Masterclass on how not to crack slabs boys take notes 😂
Yes, this was soooo painful to watch.🤔😯
Then shipping a 52 topps mantle in a bubble envelope. That is cringe
God bless!!
Holy wow. I would never crack a slab like that
God bless!!
He was dumb
Even with the practice destruction , you did it the same way 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️
5:10 WOW! You made this a much bigger job than it is. Simple to bust 2 top corners to get a small flat head or BUTTER KNIFE in the crack and pry open around the edges.
This is nuts 5:59 NO WAY
Thanks for watching!
Use painters tape on one corner, snip the corner off and then wedge your chisel or screwdriver in there while slowly pulling up and apart the slab. Works everytime for me and I never have to worry about any moving cracks pressing down over the card. SGC peels right off, PSA is a bit tougher and BGS is solid and takes some elbow grease.
Exactly, I made my comment and see nothing but the same as yours. With the high end charge, I would think PSA could offer a description on a 2k service level charge. I get they can't do this on every card, with 1.2 million graded this past month, but a premium walkthrough level should accompany added details. Help out @psacard
The slip of the screwdriver has ruined many cards. There is a better way. I posted it here but it was deleted.
Just curious what the point of using the painters tape is?
@@markn512 keeps the crack from splitting and messing up the card. Same as putting tape in cracked glass . Keeps it from splitting.
This is the correct way to crack a slab. Said no one ever! You literally saw the card bend in the center slightly haha
Thanks for watching!
I don't want to pile on with the, "crack the corners" group, but I do agree with them. I also, was shocked when you put a 20k card into a bubble mailer, instead of in a small box. Not trying to be critical, just was very concerned for your card. I kind of figured the screw down pressed the card but guess it's worth the second opinion. Thanks for the content and keep chasing!
Thanks for watching!
For someone in the cars industry I've never seen someone ruin a card easily. Everyone I know cracks from a corner. Minimal surface area to be damaged. Ty take preemptive measures on screwing up and still doubles down! Lol. Still love the show
If it used to be in a screw down holder, that is likely the reason for psa to give it an authentic altered grade. The pressure on the 4 corners from being in a screw down for a long time can cause this result. Good luck! Any ‘52 Mantle is an awesome card.
Good stuff, thanks Jeremy!
My thoughts exactly. Watch Kurts cards care video on how to check and even correct the situation.
Not
I've cracked a lot of 1/1s and super fractors of Trout for my PC. I cut horizontal at the label going across. Then take a flat head an just pry up a little. Card never moves and sits in place until I grab it. Watching you crack like this gives me stress... lol. Thanks for the videos.
Thanks Justin
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD No problem. You guys rock! Keep it up.
I always cut the top corner and then use a flat tip screwdriver and go gently down the sides and it works flawlessly
Thanks for watching!
Who was the genius (sarcasm) that said to cut down the middle? Supposed to Crack the top sides, then pry open with thin flathead screwdriver.
Thanks for watching!
Cracking the top corners is the proper and safer method for cracking slabs lol what a huge risk you took with cracking down the middle 🫣
Thanks for watching!
You're the first person I've ever seen crack open a slab like that. I think it'd be a lot more safer to crack off one of the top corners, and wedge apart the slab using a flat screwdriver
Thanks for watching!
Suggestion/question - why don’t you use painter’s tape when packaging up the card so that the grader can more easily unwrap the card and not potentially damage it trying to get it out of shipping tape?
Thanks Brian...
Cut both top corners off. Then cut the top horizontally. Then slowly peel open the slab from the top to the bottom. Safest way in my opinion.
Absolutely on a BGS slab…PSA is slightly different.
I’ve cracked many slabs and the way you cracked these slabs has to be the most dangerous method of cracking. Regardless of the grader the safest imo is to snip off the side and pry the slab apart with a flathead. Just too risky having cracks anywhere near the actual card itself.
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD That PSA center cracking is wild. HAHA!
It probably got that "Altered" because it had been in a screw-down case. Those smash the card & make it seem like someone was trying to "smooth out" wrinkles or something.
Yeah you could be right.
It looks like the black border line above Mickey's bat was added in using a black felt tip pen. Pretty easy to spot in the video.
May want to title how not to crack a slab... yikes! I'd never feel comfortable with a crack going straight over the face of my card! Chris Sewall gave a great tutorial on how to properly and seems to be the safest way to crack slabs.
Will consider the title swap ;-)
Never seen anyone crack one open that way. As someone may have said earlier, break both top corners and pry through the top to get the top half loose to pull back the top half. I nearly had a heart attack watching you practice knowing that was going to be the process.😳 Glad it worked out well!
Thanks for watching!
Corner corner corner! Why the heck would you want a crack through the middle of the card. Corner, pry, pry, pry, and then eventually the case pops open if you've done it right. Wow
Thanks for watching!
screw downs, over time press down on cards and is always a risk of coming back altered.
True that.. Thanks Larry
Not the case here. Looks like the black border line above Mickey's bat was added in using a black felt tip pen.
I've never seen it done in the middle..if you do a corner its so easy
the way I've seen it done is cut from the side. then take a flat head and prie it open.
Thanks RJ
You can also use a Dremel cutter but you have to have someone to help you hold it tight for you. You need to have the person helping you slide it off a sturdy surface about 1" and let the person cutting it but you have got to hold it tight because that's the trick.
Crack the corner then use the screwdriver to pry it Open I've did it probably around 100 times with all grading companies cases and never had 1 problem with any of the cards
Thanks for watching!
Very wise to do a few practice runs ahead of the Mantle. Although eye protection is important as well methinks 🤓
Fair point.
LIkely altered due to compression from the screw down. Let it air out, rehydrate a bit and I bet the card would stand back up a bit and maybe grade out PSA. Also looks like a good candidate to go to Gone with the Stain.
Gone with the Stain!
Next time you’re cracking slabs contact me. I want to be there to buy the damaged cards at 40% discount 😂
Haha! I'll give you a ring! ;-)
I like the way you cracked it out. FYI, I’ve always cut my cards out using a small $50-$100 bandsaw. Can get one at harbor freight or Home Depot.
I’ve had 100 percent success over the last 30 years.
...yeah. Never crack the middle. Always crack the corner of the holder.
Thanks for watching!
This was awesome to see. It was more heart-pounding watching it than giving the okay to do it. Saying yes over the phone was easy but, despite knowing the outcome before watching, I was still sweating a little. I've also only ever watched people crack the top and pry previously, so I too was surprised by the method. Seems to work well though. Thanks guys.
Thanks Harlan!
Great video as always. Definitely the first person I've seen crack a slab down the middle.
Appreciate it!
@@CHASINGCARDBOARDyeah I don’t think ops comment was a compliment.
The most stressed I’ve been watching a video. 😂😂😂 great stuff Ty!
TY...I find it much easier and safer to hand saw or dremel the corners, then slowly crack it open using a small flat. Less cracks for sure.
Thanks J
I'm glad you sold it. It looked trimmed to me. Personally, I would have a huge moral hurdle to overcome once I got the Authentic back from PSA. I wouldn't be able to rationalize enough to send the card off to another grader. But I understand getting a second opinion.
It looks like the black border line above Mickey's bat was added in using a black felt tip pen. Pretty easy to spot in the video.
@@gametimegallery7661 🤔...
Thanks for watching!
I was wondering, do companies like PSA intentionally lower their grade hoping the customer resubmits for another grading (possibly with them)? At 2k Grading fee they are charging you almost 15% of the cards value. Thats insane to me. The grading companies are bending over the entire community. As a collector for almost 50 years i can 100% tell you buy the card not the grade.
There is def some shadiness that happens…wouldn’t be surprised by anything these days
they could honestly do whatever they want to do with a card.
P lease
S ubmit
A gain
I enjoy your videos, brother. I've cracked tons of slabs including countless PSA. In my opinion, (and no matter the grading company) it's always better to cut a top corner and use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the case apart. Never had an issue. Glad the card survived 😊👌🏼
Thanks for watching!
Have you ever just sent something to SGC in a PSA slab to ask for a re-grade?
We haven’t…
I've never seen anyone break a PSA slab the way you did. It's corners or bust.
👍🏻
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD Card looked better in SGC holder anyways
What a rush on the Mantle card, thank you for sharing
I have NEVER seen a slab cracked open this way, this is crazy and reckless lmao, I can’t believe he did it this way 😂
Right
I’m loving these noon releases! Such a great surprise when I go on my lunch break 🙌🏼
Awesome!!! I think it works better for schedules!
Awesome video.. My heart would have been thumping cracking a 52 Mantle!! Was there a follow up video on SGC's grade? If not, would love to know the results?
I’ve cracked some 9’s and the porta band to get the corners is super clean! Then standard screw driver to pry.
Wait you shipped a Mickey mantle in a bubble mailer with some cardboard around it? You got some balls man
I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! Cracking Mantles, Pour Overs and Good Vibes. How could it get any better!
LESSSGO!
"I've done countless of these" goes to buy pliers and destroy a bunch of cards. Looks like he's learning on the fly to me
Haha. Do you really think we were going to buy pliers for the first time? Really?
Tile cutter is better option than traditional pliers
Noted!
The right side was altered/ cut.. did u check side view to see rough cut? Thats why it was declared, Altered
Thanks for watching!
Yeah looking at it I was thinking it should get an authentic. Still amazed to see that middle slab cut 😓
Man, I respect you. I like you and will continue to like you. But, I strongly disagree with your crack method. It may work, as you demonstrated, but it allows too much chance for damage. I dont think one should ever do anything at the bottom, only the header and just enough down a side with a short screw driver until the top comes open enough to pull the card safely. Crack a top corner off, then gently insert screw driver aimed away frm the card. I can't imagine regularly wanting the crack to go all over the card. OK, my rant is over 😅
Haha! Appreciate the feedback. ;-) Thanks for still liking us.
I use my table saw and cut the top off. Then I use a screw driver to pry open the sides. I have not lost one yet!!!
Yeah I couldn’t find the courage to do that. 😅
Same!
Haha!!
If that's the method that you're going to use, attempting to split it straight up the middle then I would recommend getting a plexiglass cutter and scoring the face of it first.
Wow, never seen anyone do it that way. Interesting concept, part of me understands, part of me is terrified.
SGC slabs are the easiest slabs to open, there's a slit that runs along the entire edge of the slab that has really weak plastic holding the whole thing together. I've literally used ONLY a dull dinner knife before and perfectly separated the front and back. My preferred method is a box cutter though. Three swipes per side and the slab is in two perfectly separated pieces. Flathead if anything is still stuck.
Thanks for watching!
If a card grades below a 1 does it come back as Authentic Altered? or does PSA and SCG both think this card has been altered? It would nice if they notified you about the alterations.
That's definitely the biggest frustration. Tell us why you think it's altered... we paid $2,000 for crying out loud!!
Great video as always. I've never seen a case cracked like that but it does look easier but more heart wrenching at the same time.
Thanks SCP!
Everytime you squeeze plyers on any case you are taking a chance. Once the torque is applied then you can't always control the crack lines. I suggest a Dremel Tool with the cutting wheel on the lock spots.
@@TedWilliams1959Fleer Yes! This! How are you the _only_ person I've seen recommend this?? Have people never heard of Dremels?
I CLIP THE CORNER AND THEN WITH A FLATHEAD SEPARATE THE LAYERS , NEVER LOST ONE YET KNOCK ON MY TURTLE SHELL!
Reggie Wayne sacrifice reaction was the best part.
:-)
That clickbait title tho 🤣🤣
Ha.
Clamp the slab down between two pieces of wood and use a dremel with a cutting disc and go around all sides. Zero worries
Oof.. you're breaking the slab wrong.. gotta cut the corner. great video as always though!
Thanks for watching!
I haven't ever seen a more dangerous way to Crack a card than this! I did a 3 minute you tube on how to Crack any brand slab with minimal risk very easy! Let me know if you want the link! Love the show!
Thanks for watching!
SGC is easiest by far. Screwdriver in side and twist. Takes 15 seconds.
Thanks for watching!
Just curious, do you let psa know when you cracked it so they can take it off the POP reports?
On larger cards, we do...
That was crazy!! I understand the laughter, wow!
That was an anxiety filled moment when you put the pliers to the Mantle Ty..😮 Sheesh..🤔😝 That was crazy.. Overall well done.. Congrats on not damaging the card..😍😉 Take care..👍💕🔥👊
Haha... Thanks Jackie!
Why are you cracking slabs down the middle? That's crazy! You ALWAYS crack the top two corners, then slowly and carefully use a flat head to pry open each side. Works like a charm.
No wonder there are so many stories of slabbed cards that are later determined to be trimmed. It is beyond me why the Hobby is ok with cracking and resubmitting a card that has been evaluated as altered by a leading grading authority in hopes of getting it past another grading company solely to realize an increase in monetary value. It just proves the adage, Caveat Emptor!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing the outcome right away instead of making us wait
You got it!! We almost did a 2-parter...glad we didn't ;-)
Curious, how did you destroy it? LOL. Nice job.
Did you enjoy the content?
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD oh my yes!!!
That looks like the worst way to do it. Crack top corner then use flat head to pop up. No risk in hurting the paper on the card. 🤷🏼♂️ but Ive never done it. Just option. Hope it goes well.
I had this same problem with altered. It's due to the screw down. They consider it too flat. Leaving it in a humidity controlled environment for a little while will fix that
I’ve used a chisel and hammer many times. Super easy, never any damage to the card. In fact, the way you illustrate looks to be the worst way to do it since when you cut, it twists the plastic.
Great tip!
do you think the paper loss on the back is why it didn't get a number grade?
Nip a corner, flat head screwdriver and never snap a case down the center. You just need a corner opened enough to get in a screwdriver. Way to much risk down the center. Safety 1st kids...wear eye protection 😂
Thanks for watching!
I've cracked tons. I Use a dremel and go 3/4 down on 3 or 4 sides. Then use the metal snips and cant fail!
Thanks for watching!
*NOTE* - We prefer cracking down the middle on PSA slabs... we understand there are other ways of doing it. Appreciate all of the feedback! (It's hilarious seeing all the slab crackers coming out of the woodwork)
You’re insane to ever do that again Ty. I hope it’s obvious to never do that again.
Electric jig saw with semi fine blade and saw across the top then open the case
Just mind boggling to think that’s the safest way to do it.
I'm just as entertained watching you practice. My nerves are shot after this video lol
I have been watching almost every show you guys put out and I love the content, but in this case you are definitely doing it the totally unnecessary riskier way. It's not that all of the slab crackers are coming out of the woodwork to criticize you, it's because we have been cracking slabs and resubbing for well over 10 years. If at any time you feel nervous you're going to damage the card by cracking the slab, you're doing it wrong. With that said, keep up the great content
Ya I would take a very different and calculated approach. Nothing that involves anything “fast” and unpredictable like snapping on edge and having a crack split less than a millimeter from the surface
I wonder if there is a big value difference between a PSA Authentic and a SGC Authentic?
It probably would have been a wash in the end…but the SGC moved fairly quickly at 20k…. Our max offer on the PSA was 18k
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD probably right....I agree it was certainly worth the risk even with the sub par slab cracking skills lol jk
Even though I knew you didn't damage the card in the end I almost still couldn't watch lol. Great job!
Haha! Thanks Andy
My anxiety went through the roof on this one! Great episode!
Haha!!
Hi, have you ever cracked a numbered card graded by psa (9) and try to resubmit to shoot for a psa 10? Is this possible (because it’s numbered)? Thoughts please 🙏🏼
No, that is a hard gamble.
I heard screw downs flatten the card and can lead to an authentic/altered grade . Great episode.
Thanks for watching!
that was entertaining, I'll give you that! I wouldn't have had the guts to try it.
Haha. Thanks for watching
Is a Dremel tool not an option?
Did you ever get it back? Whats the update?
Yes, it came back authentic.
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD nice!
I have found that end cutting pliers are the cats meow for doing this. Cuts very cleanly along the top edge. I have done this many times and i find it the safest way by far.
Thanks for watching!
Table saw, miter saw or band saw with a sharp blade is precise, clean, easy... leaves very little up to chance. No cracks just perfect, predictable cuts. You can cut the top off and then use a screwdriver or cut off all 4 sides off, no cracking whatsoever. I highly recommend... would also make a good video.
Oh yeah? Power tools! Love that. Not sure everyone has a miter saw though.
You DO NOT want a split down the middle, this can bump the corners; not going to change a 1 very much though. I cut the top corners and separate the 2 sides of the slab. I wouldn't crack a Mantle as he's not around to sign it.
I have narrowed the best way crack open any slab. Use a Dremel Tool with the spinning wheel on all lock spots. This method is time tested and proven. The RUclipsrs haven't caught onto this yet but I am the master of cracking.
Out of a "Screw down". That could be the answer to why it is graded altered. Resulting in a thin card, or ripple made less visible.
That is an interesting assessment..🤔
Thanks for watching!
Getting ready to crack my first one. Sent off what I inspected as a 9 or 10 and it came back with a new microscopic line right down the center with PSA giving it a 6. This line was not there on the arrival scan. Big bummer but I will crack it throw it in a one touch and put it in my personal display as you can't see the line with the naked eye.
Thanks for watching!
"How dare you sir, how dare you??!!" - Reggie Wayne
I use tile nippers to crack the corner of a slab and then just slowly pry with a flat screwdriver it works great so far.
Good to know
Shame that corrupt PSA put you through that. Cards formerly in screw-downs are not altered. That is pure BS, and anyone who uses PSA is nuts, unless the love oppressive wait-times, inaccurate grades, ugly slabs and non-existent customer service.
I suggest cracking with the slab in a sleeve. This limits the amount of risk to the card from a shifting case.
Thanks for watching!
Cut the top off with a band saw and pry open . Using side cutters is just crude and risky .
Thanks for watching!
congratulations on the sale. SGC is the proper place for old cards any ways.
Agreed!!
No way PSA is gonna slab a card that big an A without good reason. A $500 card then heck ya you have a chance for a different grade but a card that valuable all their senior graders are looking at it with loupes magnification and under blue light. Could be one of a million things the naked eye cannot see. Still.. made for a great video! Thanks
Thanks for watching!
