Simpler Living - Ann Algie
Франция
Добавлен 20 ноя 2011
I moved to France from the UK with my husband Tom in 2012. We wanted to life a simpler life, a life that felt congruent with our beliefs and thoughts about nature and the environment. We had an overall budget of £45,000. We left the UK in our 30 year old camper van, bought specially for the occasion, and with a view to possibly needing to live in it for a year or two. We travelled round France for 3 months before finding our small house and a 1/3 acre of land in Aveyron, south-west France for 33,000 euros. The house had a roof, but not much else. We spent the next 10 months turning it into a home while living in our van, learning to speak French and adjusting to a different culture. We have since bought more land and now have 2 acres in total, about half of this is woodland. We are currently re-building our very dilapidated barn. This channel is an honest account of our life here and encouragement for living happily during these challenging times!

Managing Change
Просмотров 88Месяц назад
Why do we find change so difficult. Here I suggest learning to accept change in our lives and to think of it as neither good or bad - it is a neutral force that may in time lead to worse or better things, but really it is just a tweak in the tapestry of life taking us in a slightly different direction.
Take a Different Perspective
Просмотров 131Месяц назад
Next time you have a bad experience with a neighbour, friend, stranger in a shop or a driver, try viewing the incident from their perspective and see if it helps. It's not always an easy thing to do but it can help us to feel less 'got at'. Usually people are not attacking us personally. They are just having a bad day for some other reason. It isn't always about US. Learning to let things pass ...

Quick Introduction to Meditation
Просмотров 1342 месяца назад
Meditation does not need to be complicated. Here is the most simple explanation I can come up with. Sit with your feet on the ground, close your eyes if you want to, focus on your breathing (or a candle or a tree) and as thoughts come into your head imagine them as passing clouds - there is no need to follow them - just let them go. Start with 5 minutes each day and build it up to 15 or 20. Eve...

I could easily do without a fridge by just eating beans and sardines with spices and canned veggies... mushroom coffee tea and a few cookies and such. I would keep my cooler for beer, lemon juice, cheese, and eggs now and then. I do like to double wrap meats in tinfoil (in sauces) and boil for hours, so I'd have to use my cooler for that as well.
This is great. Small talk is really important. I didn't always think that but you're right. It is the building blocks for more genuine relationships.
Thanks Jay, glad you liked it. Hope you get to talk to someone today. 🌻🥰
@@simplerliving-annalgie Aw thanks. Just AI and you guys.
I love your house! I was fortunate enough to live in Provance near the mouth of the Rohn for a few months about twenty years ago and fell in love with the way of life there.
Thank you.🌻🌻
I’m going to try this tomorrow. Good idea. 👍🏻
Great 👍
Good timing as always ;) 90% of the time my phone is in flight mode. Damn things. Sick of them. My next detox is youtube. Yeah addicted to youtube.
Thanks for commenting Jay. The digital stuff is a challenge for sure. Bizarre that I'm talking about it on RUclips! Have a good day. 🥰
Spot on, I’m amazed I’m not on face book, only use Twitter once a week on my laptop for about 10 mins and loads of times just leave my phone in my coat pocket and when screen times comes on every Monday it’s nearly always like 2 or 3 hours and I’m how is that even possible.
Thanks - it's interesting to hear how others manage their screen time. @@Savoy1984
Bringing the wet cloth to bed has something that has always worked for me! Great advice, thank you!
Aha that was great. I love a good pie!
You could make this so easily Jay - and it's very yummy. Vary it to include whatever you want. 👍🥰
Excellent interview. I've been friends with Steve for over 20 years and it's wonderful to see someone who worked so hard for so long succeed like he has. He is so resilient with keen insight and great integrity. Also he is a lovely man.
What a lovely comment. I've only met him a couple of times but he's had quite an influence and I very much enjoyed listening to him. 🥰
Absolutely love your house, it looks so cozy. Also love the fact that you've been able to use materials that were already available to you, so rustic and beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
Loved this interview. I was fortunate to meet with you and Steve this week and I'm a huge fan of psychological crime. Even though lately I've struggled to concentrate on reading novels I'm very motivated by this interview to read more. I've just started reading Hermit and looking forward to getting to know the characters by reading the whole series.
That's great Janet. I don't think you'll be disappointed. 🥰👍
I try to keep up with the clutter in my house but my husband does his best to hang on to everything he owns. That green jumper is a great color on you. 😊
😂 I didn't mention my husband's 'workshop' on the video - too distressing.🤣 We can only be responsible for our own stuff I guess. I don't think we notice our own cos it feels relevant to what we're doing - I can tolerate my own mess far easier than someone else's. 🥰
Ah this is gonna be good. Might have to start reading after watching this. Inspirational stuff.
Thanks Jay, I think you'd enjoy his type of crime fiction. Hermit would fascinate you I think. 🥰
@@simplerliving-annalgie I'll check it out for sure. Thanks.
Really enjoyed it, the inspiration for hermit was especially fascinating.
Glad you enjoyed it - he's an interesting guy. I was trying to make a 20 minute video, but everything he said seemed relevant so I decided to make it longer. Sometimes it's nice to sit with a cuppa and really listen to someone.🥰
Wonderful interview Ann. I watch and enjoy all your videos. Best thing I did this year was to subscribe to your channel. 😎 👍🏻
Aaahhh thank you - glad you enjoyed it. It's a different challenge to video someone else, but Steve made it very easy. 🥰
Good timing this. I can't stand clutter. Too much of it. I'm going to do something about it and soon.
Thanks for commenting - yes it can be a challenge, but does feel so good when it's done. Good luck. 🥰
No TV here for 10 years too, but I have been thinking of getting one now. I wish tey would scrap the licence fee
Juggling, yes ! !. Taught myself 🎾🥎⚾️. Here’s a tip, practice over your bed. Good wishes on making life better.
Thanks, great tip too. I remember my son learning and all you could hear was thud, thud, as the balls hit the ground.🤣
I gave up watching tv 8 months ago can't be arsed watching it anymore its just a ornament now not going to watch it ever again I don't even miss it
Thanks for commenting Kevin. Hope you're enjoying your extra TV free time. I don't know how I'd find the time to watch now, although I do watch quite a bit of RUclips. 🥰
Sounds like total nonsense to me. Why would you want to grow backwards! SMH
😂 I enjoy it and I care about the planet. Each to their own. 👍🥰
Always happy and smiling, you’re a very positive person and a great example for many 👍 and after watching a few of your videos, I can say a very honest and open person too 😊
You're very kind. Thank you. 🥰
Thanks for the very relaxing video - very thought provoking 😊
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time to comment.🥰
Hi Ann! Great advice. Good idea about putting "one a day" in a jar. It's a lot more manageable than what I've been doing. I'm going to try this!
Fantastic!
I know a woman who saved about €20 a week for a year and bought an electric bike costing €1000. 😊
Great video. I live in America where people feel they have to have a refrigerator. I unplugged mine 8 months ago and haven't regretted it. I waisted more food by having one. My dishwasher doesn't work anymore and I will not replace it. My dryer finally quit working and will not replace that either. My big family microwave also quit working. I replaced it with a much smaller one. These were all 20 yrs old and lasted a long time. But I decided not to have those items replaced. I am living a full and happy life without them.
Fantastic and thanks for sharing. I like to challenge the idea that we HAVE to have these things. It's fine to have them if you choose to do so, and we are all in different situations, but many of us don't need them, we've just been told we do. Have a lovely day.
What a wonderful video. I have struggled with pastry making in the past. I might have to start cooking in the future! Mmm pie.
Seriously Jay, give it a try. It can be fun. Start with jam tarts or something you like. 🥰
Love this video. Range is the problem with all electric vehicles unfortunately. I enjoy my ebike but I can't really go anywhere except for town which is five miles away. Ah Tom at 2:28. Aw. Really enjoyed this and camping too. Lovely.
Thanks Jay, glad you enjoyed it. No problem with range in modern electric cars - ours is quite old.
In such a happy state chatting with us about this. Vegetarian helps.
I agree with 95% of this. I think maths is not your strongest skill. Perhaps the word you were looking for was all change is “neutral” rather than negative. But for a 4 minute (unedited?) off the cuff video, this was pretty good. Keep going. 😊
Love the green jumper and the great message. I agree about the tiny things too. It's good to start small with one thing at a time.
As a vegetarian do you eat beans- can or make from a bag?
Hi, yes I eat beans, usually canned cos I'm quite lazy. 😜🤣
@@simplerliving-annalgie Thanks for making your video!

Sorry to hear about your experience here. I had a similar experience where I was attacked by seagulls. Many years ago I would have felt genuinely terrified but a few days ago when I was riding my bike at night, I had birds swarming and squawking at me, I immediately got the hell out. I thought to myself, they're probably trying to protect their nest. Of course it was dark. So on the one hand they feel threatened and I pulled myself together and thought about it from their point of view. Yeah get away fast as birds can be vicious, and they will attack!
I used to work with someone who ‘crashed’ through life. I learnt to step back, give time and attention to what she was really saying, and usually managed to reframe things so that our working day wan’t just two grumpy people…
Ah…so live very close to town and shop daily…..something that only works when you live within easy distance of a shopping area.
It certainly helps. I shop every 3 days or so. If I didn't have such a love for cheese I could leave it longer as most food keeps a little longer. 🥰
Thank you ❤
You're welcome 😊
Thank you for this very informative and wise video. It is reassuring to know the way our world is going now, I prefer to know than not. I found it after checking your soup video for supper tonight. Yummy and calming. 🙏🏼
Strange the connections we make.😂👍 Thanks for commenting.
I noticed this as well and so I did a little experiment where one week I would walk over 10,000 steps a day and one where I walked fewer than 8,000 a day and the difference in my mental clarity and physical state between both weeks was astonishing. I felt so much more enclosed, anxious and mentally stuffy during the second week. It’s wonderful how something as simple as walking can make so much of a difference:)
Thanks for sharing your experience. I love how simple things can make such a huge difference. Free as well!🥰👍
If I have a very busy day ahead fasting keeps me sharper
I've noticed too that my head feels clearer. Thanks 👍
thank again
thanks again
before i moved to my new apartment i noticed that i actually only use the fridge to store those cans of olives and cappers that get forgotten and forsaken until they are not longer edible. i don't eat meat and here, where my new apartment is, there is a fish shop with fresh fish next door. so when i moved in, i didn't take the fridge with me. five months in now and i don't really miss it. it is true that there is very little waste like this, and also i am getting more and more curious about fermented foods. i have been brewing water kefir and kombucha, and i have just realised, thanks to your video, that yoghurt doesn't need to be refrigerated, so i might even start making my own yoghurt
Thanks for your interesting comments. 🥰👍
I did it like 4x first warm then cold then the last part cold until I found my body accepting it then I stopped. I feel good and feel different like it add more strength to my body and relaxes and more of it, 'll do this everytime I take shower. Thank you❤️
That's brilliant.👍🥰
sweet! love it!
Hey great video! I tried a 24 hour one in the past and yeah it's doable. Water and tea. Dehydration is more dangerous that hunger. It's a great thing to sometimes do to help aid in weight loss.
Thanks for your comment Jay. Glad it worked for you.🥰
@@simplerliving-annalgie Hi Ann just wanted to say whatever you do. Stay hydrated. Today's a scorcher! I'm not good with heat.

I stopped watching the news during the pandemic. On the rare occasions that I now catch it, it just reaffirms my decision.
The news was at its worst during the pandemic. (Daily death totals scrolling across the bottom of the screen etc and endless repeated footage of some poor person on a ventilator!) Crazy stuff and very harmful to mental health. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you so much for this video. I had heard of AI but put it aside, but this has made it approachable. It’s could be very addictive ,so for now I prefer to learn about making pastry and meditating from someone who lives a simple life, as do I. Blessings
Aaahhh how kind. Thanks for commenting. Yes, the whole AI thing is getting very.interesting. Have a lovely day.❤
Semi-retired, and like you, I relished the lack of imposed structure. However, I have now developed my own morning routine and miss it when events interrupt it
We’re vegan so it should be really easy. The one issue for us would be that when I make a meal we can never finish it all. I would just have to learn to cook in smaller quantities
We regularly eat leftovers the next day and have done for years with no problems. Keep it covered and in a cool place - ours is usually in a pan with a lid on top of the (unlit) hob.
I want to take cold showers daily, especially in winter. But every time I tried I got sick. It is almost as if my immune system shuts down, does anybody happen to be in a similar situation?
