Flewelling Canoe Restoration, Part 4, Inwale Repairs, Rib Replacements, and minor planking install.
In this part I continue with the Jalbert Flewelling Canoe restoration. It has been a long time coming and I am excited to be engaged once again with this project. The canoe has some serious damage and a slow methodical process is the only way to get the canoe back in decent full strength shape. Over 30+ canoe ribs will require replacing and most likely well over 100 feet of planking will be required when it is all said and done. My goal for this video was to strengthen and repair the stern end of the canoe since it was the most damaged. I will then address additional planking and rib replacements in Part 5 down the road a short ways. Thanks for tuning in, taking and interest and watching ...

      I don’t recall if I did or not. Most likely I did. The gunwales haven’t budged even a slight bit since then so the bond is strong. It would be good practice to scuff the surface for that bond you speak of though. I have since painted the Wabnaki canoe and I like the appearance of color vice natural much better.

    I was having a hard time reading your tape. Could you tell me the thickness of gunwales? Also is there specific types of wood that would be better than others? I’m about to try to restore my old towne royalex. Thanks!

    • @mainetripper
      @mainetripper Месяц назад

      The thickness depends on preference. Keep in mind that the thicker the gunwales the more weight. Typically I will match the existing gunwales with new materials for dimensions. Gunwales can vary so try to match any of the existing gunwales material dimensions. Typically 3/4” x 3/4” or 3/4” x 1” or something similar. Ash lumber is the preferred choice of wood Specie. It is durable, hard and lasts a long time. Spruce can also be used if you don’t have access to white ash. I always try to use ash wood.

    Great video series. Thank you! I am beginning my restoration on a 1950s Old Town canoe and I have never restored a canoe before, so these videos are very informative. But I do have a question. How would you go about fixing a broken seat? One of the sections that holds the caning is completely broken. I could repair the broken wood, but I am not confident on its strength if I try to repair. Would you rebuild the seat and find someone to cane it, or can you purchase new seats?

    • @mainetripper
      @mainetripper Месяц назад

      Thanks for the comment! I prefer to salvage old seats if possible. However at a minimum I would recommend replacing the one broken seat section and then have it recaned. You could easily recane the seat yourself it just takes time. If you have the woodworking equipment to manufacture a new piece of the seat then go for it. Save the old piece to match mark the caning holes. I am assuming the cane is not pressed but woven. Good luck. Try and save as much material as you can and then stain the new piece as close as you can to match the old.

  • @MsRreeves
    @MsRreeves 2 месяца назад

    Why can't you use the same screw holes? when you putting in the gunwales.

    • @mainetripper
      @mainetripper 2 месяца назад

      It is preferable to use new holes since it is difficult to exactly locate the old holes during gunwale installation. In most cases the old holes have typically been enlarged over time and the gunwale positioning will have better alignment over a longer period of time by drilling new holes. That is how Mad River explained it when I first read about it so I stuck with it and it makes sense to me. There is no exactness when trying to utilize the old holes. It does not weaken the hull if that is your concern.

    Important Note about Boiled Linseed Oil!! BLO is linseed oil (flax oil) that has been modified with metallic 'dryers' so the oil will harden faster to form a finish with some film thickness. The more coats, the more thickness. Apply with a disposable brush, wait 10-15 minutes to see what soaks in, then wipe off the excess with a disposable rag (excess oil on the surface gets gummy and sticky). As the film hardens, it is oxidizing - reacting with oxygen in the air - which produces a bit of heat. Spread over the surface of the paddle, the thin film's heat radiates into the room harmlessly. However, if the rag is wadded up and chucked in the trash, the rag's heat is retained/reinforced and the rag can get hot enough to *catch fire* spontaneously!! This will catch the trash can on fire, which catches the shop on fire along with your new paddle. *Bad News*, in other words. To mitigate the fire risk, one can spread the rag out flat so the heat radiates, then dispose of the rag once the oil has cured and hardened. In stead, I usually get a tin can to put the rag in and burn the rag outside starting it with a lighter. To see the spontaneous combustion yourself, just wad the rag in the can outside and wait, checking the heat level occasionally. Experiencing the heat rise ones self is quite surprising the first time! Not all oils are hardening oils with this fire risk. BLO is one of them. If one objects to the metallic dryers, it is possible to heat raw linseed oil into natural BLO (yes this too can burn if it get too hot!). Here's a video I like on this: ruclips.net/video/nazFQdXD4BA/видео.html (There are others - search, watch and compare)

    • @mainetripper
      @mainetripper 2 месяца назад

      Great information and yes I take exceptional cautions with BLO and most solvents when rags have been wetted with them. I typically lay them out flat on my basement floor until dry and then dispose of them. Sometimes I will use them as fire starters for my backyard fireplace. I don’t use BLO a ton but the result with the canoe paddles was very pleasing. Appreciate your detailed comment regarding the dangers associated with bunched up rags wetted with BLO. All that use this product should be made aware and excercise precautions. Hopefully people reading your comment will become more educated if not already aware. Thank you!

But probably not; I’m so hard on my equipment! Nice relaxing video-keep it up! Quick question: you mentioned this is probably your last paddle of the season. Do you have anything else in store for the cold months, or any big plans for next year?

      Thank you! I handbuilt the canoe about 5 years ago and painted the hull a few years ago. It truly is a comfortable canoe and paddles well. I believe you are on the right track with practicing with your drone on dry land. I had flown my drone multiple times however this time I am not exactly sure what happened.

      @@mainetripperI saw a guy flying his drone around a small pond in early spring. He was doing fine when, all of a sudden, it dropped into the water and sank to the bottom. It was only about 20 feet from the shore, and the water was up to his neck. He walked over to where it had dropped, dove underwater, and got really lucky, coming up with it on the first try. He packed up quickly to rush home and try to dry it out and salvage it. I told him to place it in a bag of rice overnight. I don’t know how he made out.

    Great video! Don't feel bad I'm on drone #3 ...lol...one i dropped and broke a leg. Have to be a NASA engineer to fix that...had to climb up a tree overhanging the water on a cliff to get another one...only to fly it into cat tails the next week and lost it in a river...third one is still in the box ...ready to be lost soon enough haha...its part of it...its not just you! Well done sir ! Sorry about your drone. A couple years ago my wife bought me a drone. I appreciated the thought, but I asked if she could please return it. I will get another one eventually……I think. The Nano stove worked well for me. First time using it. I left my fuel at home intentionally to use it and was happy with the nanos performance. Wood fuel burns quick in that stove though. Expected I guess. Glad you liked the vid. We’ll get together this winter for some winter camping! Good stuff!

    those downcast lakes sure look beautiful . Sorry about your drone! from the maps, those lakes look very interesting , lots of inlets, islands and coves. your campsite looks super cool. nice wannigan (sp*?) is pretty great, cool how you use it for a wind screen! I went out oct. 10-12 ( up in Aroostook County)to square lake, down the thorougfare into eagle lake, stayed at a campsite on the public lands there. was pretty quiet on the lakes, very calm and sunny. I did a dawn paddle home back up the thoroughfare that was pretty awesome (I wanted to make it to square lake before any wind picked up, its almost 2mile across that lake!). the last or first part of the thoroughfare at square lake it very bony and shallow, had to line it both ways , but the rest of it to eagle lake is plenty of water. I missed the campsite on the thoroughfare (halfway brook) paddled right past it. I will go back. I live up here now. thx for sharing, sorry you did not get to do your trip with your daughter ! My daughters aren't interested in camping unless it's 'GLAMPING"!Lol😎

    So, 1 year later, did that crack fix hold? I'm concerned since it might not have supported the two sides across the crack that it would just open up again, and I have a few of these in camp that might be worth doing this to on a restoration if I get around to it. Thanks!

      Rock solid. I have only used the canoe on mostly flat water but the canoe has been heavily loaded on those trips. I have all the confidence in the world with G-flex and what it brings to the table. Not sure about running Class IV rapids but it will take a beating and hold up.

    • @jesseellis7298
      @jesseellis7298 3 месяца назад

      @@mainetripper Hey, thanks for following up on this, it's great info. We've got a bunch of Penobscots and have to keep them in unheated conditions and for a while I was thinking that folks using our camp after we did were just wrecking our canoes, but figured out that the cold was doing it (in precisely the same place as on your canoe, too). They have enormous bandaids of Bondo and I think fiberglass on them and while that works I suspect it's causing significant drag (and weight!)! I like your way much better! And we're not running rapids, purely flatwater boundary waters travel, so if you're happy with it on flatwater that's cool.

    • @mainetripper
      @mainetripper 3 месяца назад

      @jesseellis7298 The g-flex applied after slightly widening the joint allows for sanding the hull fair. Sometimes canoes take a wicked beating and we can only do our best to get more years out of them. Check out my other video of the Mad River Voyager and you will see how badly that canoe looked and then the final result. Things can be done…..the canoes will obviously never be new again but we can give them some elbow grease and live to keep em goin’

    Beautiful canoe, excellent craftsmanship, and nice videos! Thanks for sharing. I picked up an old kit-built slat/canvas canoe from an estate sale for $50 last week as an experimental winter project. It's been hanging in a garage for 20 or more years, I haven't found any rotten wood yet, but I know it's going to need some tightening up and canvas replacement. It's not a treasure like the canoe you've just finished, but it might be a fun learning experience and a usable and unique pond paddler.

    • @mainetripper

      Yes it does. “Catching” can occur with the paper on fresh paint and the very small amount of dawn allows for lubrication and keeps the paper marginally cleaner.

    I always enjoy your videos! Just a thought on preserving your body when loading/unloading your canoe. I prefer to slide the canoe back and lower one end to the ground. then I go under the canoe and lift up on the portage yoke and take a few steps backward before balancing the canoe on my shoulders. I was worried hearing you talk about your knees and then watch you unload the canoe like you did. If you take it in a slower and more controlled way that will really help protect your body!
